Red, Leaf, Gold, May, Kris, Brendan, Lucas, Dawn, are these the official names given by Nintendo for these characters or are people basing themselves on the best suggested names available in the games and in the Anime?

That depends. If you mean in the manga, the names are dubbed and adapted, sometimes even new names are for them are added by the fandom. Like Amber > "Sean"/"Scott."

All the names you listed are official for the American dub of Nintendo/PUSA.

(I'm pretty sure. Correct me if I'm wrong, users)

I'm actually referring to the Trainers in the games.

If I remember correctly, the names came from either hidden in-game data or the default name automatically given to the rival (May, Brendan, Dawn, and Lucas).

But not the others? Red and Leaf came from hidden internal data that said Pokémon Trainer Red and Pokémon Trainer Leaf. I haven't found out about Gold or Kris yet, though.

Going to need a reliable source for those.

I don't see why they wouldn't be official. The only name that's not is Soul, and that's because no one's got any idea what her name's going to be (or whether or not she's Kris, but that's neither here nor there).

As said above, Brendan, May, Lucas and Dawn get said names in their respective games when you don't play as them.

Red and Blue are confirmed due to their appearances in Gold/Silver/Crystal, where the names they're given is as such.

Silver is the default name given to your GSC Rival when you don't input anything for his name. In consequence, Gold is given to the male protagonist, being his opposite. Kris is the first default name for the girl in Pokémon Crystal. In other words, the first name on the list.

We really don't need Word of God from GameFreak. The games establish these names on their own.

Also, the Prima official guide for Crystal says the girl's name is Kris. I know, because I still have mine!

The others are pretty much default names. Im not sure why the FRLG girl is Leaf instead of Green, but I'll go with it.

Because the name "Green" had already been established as the canon name of the Kanto rival in the Japanese Generation II games. The more relevant question is why she wasn't named "Blue", and the answer for that is that it would have given the impression she had been previously introduced in Blue version, which she had not (despite the Special manga's adaptation of the game).

Oh right, I forgot about Kanto in G/S but that being said, these games are about to be replace.

With the remake of the games from Generation 1, do these names still count? If Blue was the name of the rival for the NA version back in the days, did that name changed to Green because we received LeafGreen instead of OceanBlue when the games were re-invented?

Pretty sure that we'll still see the name Red in HS/SS once we hit Kanto, but what about the rival? Hell for that matter, why should it be Red in both games? What about Leaf or whatever she's called, doesn't she deserve to be the top ranked in Kanto?

Finally, are we fooling ourselves with this? I mean the names chosen here are probably just the English names, the (real) Japanese names might be different.

HGSS we won't know until next year, but I personally think Blue will be Green in the remakes, since we finally got the proper Green version.

And the rest of them, yeah, as they've said. Official as we can get.

Actually, we should know in 60 days.
