Isn't anyone angered about this besides me?

I honestly don't see why people should be upset that such a terrible place gets vandalized.

So? not like anyone can do anything with it.

But it's history, even though the Holocaust was one of the world's most devastating tragedies, the place should not be vandalized.

That site is now a memorial, and they were vandalizing a memoral to all the people that died there.

They can steal its physical aspects all they want, that spot of land is marked forever.

I don't think anyone needs the sign to know what happened there or to care more about it.

It's easier to relate to an idea, even feel an idea, if a physical item is attributed to the concept. Ergo, the land meaning something. The Sign is part of that so doing something to the Sign is doing something to the Land which is doing something to the Memory/Meaning (in a perception sense).

Besides qualms about vandalizing such a site, the sign is no big loss. Unless, of course, the sign said:
"This is Auschwitz. People died here. FEEL BAD."
Otherwise the memorial is still intact (for the most part) and still does its job.
I can definitely see how people object to the principle.

It's one hell of a thing to hang up on your bedroom wall though :p

My bet is that it'll be on eBay by Christmas. Gift ideas anyone?

You'd think that they'd have security cameras on it. Wonder who did it, or if they'll be dumb enough to try selling it online or something.

Yes, but it's the physical aspects that identify the place. It's how we know that that particular place is of significance.

That sign is more meaningful than some of you realize, I think.

It's something like the evil equivalent of the inscription of The New Colossus on the base of the Statue of Liberty. It isn't just words.

...It's Auschwitz, guys. The original sign. I take a Holocaust class. To vandalize that place is... so disrespectful. That's horrible.

Indeed, the sign is much more than just words. The sign is a symbol of what happened at not only Auschwitz, but all the death camps. The slogan "Arbeit Macht Frei" (Work Sets You Free) may have been used at many different camps, but the way it was presented in that twisted and curved sign is a chilling sight to behold. It is a symbol for the millions of people who entered the camp under that sign, encouraged by its slogan of hope, only to never leave again.

This sign needs to be found. The fact that someone has stolen it is sickening. They have proven their ignorance towards history and if they are caught, they need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent.

Not just that, but it seems profesionals stole it, and it is rumored it was done because holucaust deniers wanted to "erase" it. And they not only killed jewish people, but also disabled, homosexual people, Soviet POWs, and everyone they hated.

As far as I'm concerned, this roughly amount to vandalizing six million gravestones. It's monstrously disrepsectful.

(I know they didn't all die in Auchswitz, but it's the principle of the thing)

This.
You could nuke' the area around it, but nothings going to stop people remembering what happened there.
