Do you know what Nintendo could do with this game- take away the calls and add new ones. Just listen to this.
I'm sure that Nintendo could remake the calls for this game. They sound like you're playing a nes game. I know the the D/P/pl calls are a bit better but I think it could go further.
There calls could be like the ones in the anime. They could say there names. Do you wish for this to happen or do you like the retro calls. Comment ;)

The calls are meant to be different from the anime, I read it in an interview.. they should be updated though.

The games aren't the same as the anime. The older cries could use some touching up though. It's weird that after all these years, the older pokemon's sprites have been updated, but their cries still sound like 8-bit screeches.

Saying names would be a horrible idea - partly because they'd have to be re-recorded several times for different languages...and partly because it's just lame as hell.

I do agree that they could use some updating, but just in their quality - the basic sound of the calls should stay the same.

Eh, maybe. I personally don't like the newer calls. All the Gen IV creatures have several seconds of weird, complex sounds. Actually, now that I think of it, Gen III had some OK cries, a nice balance of quality and complexity. Probably one of the few things I do like about Gen III.

I actually kind of like that they haven't changed, though.

I used to be able to close my eyes before an encounter and tell you which pokemon I was battling. With some of them, I can still do that.

Having them say their names is not a bad idea or anything, but it make things about 1000 times more difficult than they need to be.

I don't want to hear my Totodile saying "FOFO FOFO FOFOPHILE". In a duck voice.

Some of the Pokémon do sound kind of like they're saying their name.. well, their Japanese names, anyway. Like Chatot sounds like it's going 'perappu~'. I might just be crazy though.

I don't really see a need to change the cries... it'd break the familiarity of some Pokémon, like hearing that wretched CHEEPCHIRCHIRHICHIRCHEEEEEEEE when a Starly breaks your Pokémon chain, or that 'hoohoo~' when you enter a patch of grass at night in Johto.

I think Chatot actually is supposed to saying its Japanese name, but since it's based on a parrot and it's noted for mimicry, it's the one Pokémon for which that makes sense.

I can do that with a lot of them too. :) Many calls have become iconic, which is why I think they need to be updated, but not fundamentally changed. I think it would be pretty easy for them to preserve the basic sound of everything from the little chirp of Pidgey to the funky indescribable sound of Starmie while still upgrading the sound quality to the best the DS can offer.

I agree with this, as much fun as it would to hear them say their names, some of them are already horrible, so if they do they'd have to get professional people who can imitate animal sounds better than the anime is doing.

But an update wouldn't be too bad, it is awkward to compare the original cries to the newer ones sense the newer ones or so more realistic what with the Chimchar line sounding something like actual monkeys..

Yes, that's exactly what I meant by touching up the old cries. Make them sound fundamentally the same and thus recognizable as those pokemon's cries, just update the quality. The situation we have now is equivalent to having Bulbasaur's Red and Blue sprite in Platinum.

I chose Chatot as an example because I couldn't think of anything else. XD; Clefairy comes to mind now though, since it sounds like it's going 'pippi'.

Yeah, some of the GenI ones are... out there. Paras, Staryu and Mew anyone?

I'm one of those who can probably attribute every Pokemon to its cry, and I like that sense of familiarity I have with the cries. However, I definitely think the ones from Gen 1 to Gen 2 at least should have a revamp - although they should keep the same cry pattern (e.g. HootHoot goes "hoo-hooooo").

Despite this, i'm sure you can hear in the latest Pokemon Sunday episode with the clip of the starter selection that Chikorita and Totodile still have their same old cries. No revamp in these games then... oh well lol.

Gen 1 and 2 Pokemon could definitely use an update. Some of their cries make my ears bleed x_x I like what Stadium did with the cries. GF could do something similar.

I don't listen to the cries. Overtime I jsut find the noise from the game annoying. I usually play all games with the sound off. Makes it more fun since I can add my own noises and whatnot.

DO~DO DO!

Ugh... Zubat's call's gonna haunt me until the day I die. They need to update the calls to the level of modern Pokémon. And make them less annoying.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I missed the actual "animal sounds" they made in the old Stadium games.

Hm. One thing I might consent to, is species who share a cry would get their own. I doubt anything will change, though.

In the Stadium series most of the Pokémon had the same cries that they have in the handheld games, just with better sound, and some are given the taste of actual animals (Snorlax is the one I remember best), but still repecting the "melody" pattern of the original cry. I wish they used these cries for the handheld main games, but I know they won't. At least the old cries are better than having to hear the anime cries.
Back in 1999 (it was brought to Mexico one year later, premiered here in June 1999 I remember it well) when I first saw the anime, I was waiting to hear the Pokémon roaring and growling with their in-game cries (of course with a better sound quality, ala Staium, again). Then it came Pikachu. "Come on, yell your electric squeak!" I thought. But instead, he said "Pika-chu". My mom and sis said "Oh, how beautiful, it sounds like a baby!". My self, I fell sick... I get used to the anime calls, but they will never be as good (and in som way, realistic) a sthe in-game cries.

I hope they do update their calls, but no saying names. I get enough of that crap from the anime.

Also, WAY TOO MANY Pokemon have similar cries in gen I and II
