Fun Trivia: Pokemon Contest Judges

The panel of judges is usually composed of Mr. Contesta, Mr. Sukizo and your local Nurse Joy. However, additional judges are brought in for the Grand Festival and special contests such as the Wallace Cup. Dawn's mother also served as a judge because Nurse Joy wasn't available for one contest.

For the Hoenn Grand Festival three Nurse Joys were brought in to help evaluate the coordinators pokemon. It is also done again for the Kanto and Sinnoh Grand Festival.

Vivian was invited as an special guest judge for the Kanto Grand Festival.

Wallace served as a judge in the Wallace Cup.

Fantina was an extra judge at the Sinnoh Grand Festival.

Johanna as a substitute judge in the Neighborly Town pokemon contest.

Fun Trivia: Ash ribbon case

Ash participated in an official contest for the first time in Jubilife City. The receptionist hands him and Dawn a couple of ribbon cases and ball capsules. The blue case ribbon to the left belongs to Ash. We never see the case again though, since Ash doesn't make a career as a coordinator and never wins any contest. Still interesting that he technically has one.

Janet, Drew, Robert and Jessie are some of the few coordinators to achieve a perfect score in a contest performance.

Fun Trivia: The first ever coordinators

Janet and Chaz are the first coordinators introduced in the anime. They both make it to the final round and battle each other. Ultimately Janet won the contest with her Beautifly.

Fun trivia: Jessie's worst performance!

Jessie got a zero in her first performance as a coordinator. It was a long way to the Sinnoh Grand Festival.

Damn, I miss Musashi and Habunake And contests in general! I don’t think I’ve ever gotten over their ending, even though it’s been >15 years now. Your posts are bringing back wonderful (and some terrible lol) memories.

Coordinator number 3 is to the right of Dawn. Just like the previous ones, she managed to survive the appeal round.

The girl with the pigtails is definitely seen in various moments throughout the Grand Festival, but I didn't include her bc I didn't see her in previous contest episodes, although it's possible that I missed her. Each time that I go back to rewatch I have to edit my posts lol.

Then the other girl with the purple hair in Jubilife (to the left of Ash) does look pretty similar to the one girl in the TR shop & Grand Festival Roster as well. I think I might edit my post, add her and give you the credit, good catch.

I miss contests too. It was a great way to give Ash's friends something to aspire too. Contests always came up with new rivals, interesting COD and cool attack combinations. Not to mention all of Jessie's crazy performances haha. It's a pity that they didn't think of bringing them back when ORAS came out. Since the anime is so driven by whatever current pokemon game is out, it's very unlikely that they will just bring them back in the present.

Fun Trivia: First Victories

May's first contest victory was against Coordinator Grace in Fallarbor Town, someone who May & co. befriended previous to participating in the contest. She was experienced enough to defeat Drew with her Medicham.

May won her first contest using Beautifly.

Next up, we have Dawn. Her first contest victory was against her childhood friend Kenny. He was using Prinplup to face off against her.

Dawn won using her Piplup for the battle round and Pachirisu in the appeals round.

Finally, we reach Jesselina. She won her first official contest in Solaceon Town. Her victory was against Kenny. Once again, he was using Prinplup in the battle round.

Jesselina used her Dustox to win (appeal and battle round).

Fun Trivia: Top Coordinators

Top Coordinators are trainers who won the Grand Festival. The first one to win the Grand Festival onscreen was coordinator Robert in the Hoenn Region. His known pokemon are Milotic and Claydol, which gave him the victory. He was the first coordinator to defeat Drew onscreen at the Slateport Contest. He also gave some tips to Ash's Snorunt on how to focus his ice beam attack. He had a small role in the anime and much is not known about him.

Dr. Abby was the first top coordinator to be introduced in the anime, but by the time May & co. meet her, she is already retired and working as a pokemon doctor. She learned there are different ways to interact with pokemon and decided to move on from contests. Her Skitty evolved into Delcatty and helped May's Skitty learn Blizzard attack.

In a scene in her house, her trophies and ribbons are visible in the background.

Yuma is a top coordinator and Breeder who decided to pursue a career training beginner coordinators. She considered taking Brock under her wing, but after seeing his impressive performance at the pokemon contest she decided to pass and teach another student instead.

Juan is the 8th gym leader Ash faces when traveling in the Hoenn Region, but he is also a top coordinator and has a dedicated fanbase. He owns a variety of water pokemon such as Sealeo, Luvdisc, Seaking, Milotic, Whiscash, Seadra, Gorebyss, Azurill, Corsola, Goldeen, Wailmer, Barboach, Chinchou etc. He does not use all of them in gym battles and some are shown on his water shows.

Soledad became the winner of the Kanto Grand Festival. She defeated May in the Top 4 and proceeded to defeat an unknown coordinator in the following round. Her pokemon team consists of Butterfree, Slowbro, Lapras and Pidgeot. She met May before the Grand Festival began and revealed she defeated Drew on his first ever pokemon contest.

Wallace is well known for being the gym leader of Sootopolis City and becoming Champion Master of the Hoenn region. However, eventually he also became top coordinator and began hosting his own competition "The Wallace Cup" in which he participates as an extra judge. His main pokemon is Milotic.

Johanna is well known for being Dawn's mother, but back in the day she was a fierce pokemon coordinator and eventually won the Grand Festival. Her only known pokemon are Glameow and Umbreon. She also teaches contest classes and served as a contest judge one time that Nurse Joy was unable to make it.

Fantina is well known for being absent from her gym, but she also is a top coordinator and served a special guest judge at the Sinnoh Grand Festival. She specializes in ghost type pokemon and some of her pokemon are Gengar, Drifblim and Mismagius.

During Dawn's adventures in Sinnoh it is confirmed that Marina has become a top coordinator. There's a video of her performing in the pokemon contest site. She used Feraligart and Jigglypuff for her demonstration.

Zoey became top coordinator in the Sinnoh Grand Festival after narrowly defeating Dawn in the final round. She is also the only top coordinator to have a full team of six pokemon. Her team consists of Glameow, Gallade, Mismagius, Leafeon, Gastrodon and Lumineon. She is also one of few top coordinators to be a major recurring character in the anime, as she served as both a friend and rival to Dawn.
