Chapter One: Death in the Underground

"It looks like your Absol has contracted the PokeRUS, that's all."

"The what?" Nathan asked, pale brow wrinkled with confusion, hands on hips, deep green eyes continually darting from the PokeBall to Nurse Joy.

"The PokeRUS. It's a beneficial virus," explained the pink-haired nurse, "that, for a couple of days, increases the battle abilities of the infected Pokemon. It's contagious, so you might see the other Pokemon in your party get it too. There's nothing to worry about - it'll help you when you battle in the Gym tomorrow.
"Although, I don't know what to make of those red paws...I've never seen the PokeRUS do that before - but mind you, it's very rare, and I've never seen an infected Absol before, so it might just be the effect it has on that species of Pokemon. But if anything strange happens, come back and let me know." Joy smiled sympathetically, returning Nathan his PokeBall. The young trainer nodded and thanked her, before walking out of the Pokemon Centre and into Vermilion City.

The air was quite cold that night, and as Nathan told Absol, which he let out to walk with him, it was only going to get worse there, as Vermilion was by the sea. He decided to spend the night in Celadon City, where there was a warm hotel. "Come on, Absol," he murmured, "let's take the Underground Passage."

The young trainer smiled broadly as he began walking, the two Indigo League badges pinned to his shirt shining softly under the moonlight. He was a short boy, not much taller than his Pokemon, with a white baseball cap on his head and thick hiking boots. His clothes clashed horribly with each other, and were patched up all over the place. Nathan came from a poor family, and had had to make some sacrifices in terms of what he could afford for himself in order to afford a PokeNav for his journey. As such, he continuously checked his red device, as if to make sure he was using it enough to be worth the concession.

Nathan led the way just out of the North entrance, holding onto his baseball cap with his spare hand as the wind began to pick up, his Pokemon trailing silently behind him. Absol seemed a little ruffled by the resultant decrease in temperature, even though that particular species was supposed to be fairly hardy in the cold, but Nathan was too busy navigating by his PokeNav to notice. They said nothing else until they descended the stairs into the passage to Celadon, when the silence was broken by Nathan.

"Looks like you're going to totally wipe out Lt. Surge tomorrow, huh, Absol," he said, not looking behind him at his partner, whose near-violent shivering calmed down as they entered the passage.

That turned out to be quite the mistake.

As it followed him, red-tinged feet padding quietly along the subway floor, the Absol never took its eyes off the position on Nathan's back where his left shoulderblade ended. For half an hour it waited, vigilant in its observing of his movements, silent in its approach. Finally, as they neared the light at the end of the tunnel, Nathan stopped still for a moment, hand stroking his bare chin, and chatting amiably to his Pokemon about his strategy for tomorrow's Gym battle.

When its trainer stopped moving, Absol at once pounced, springing with remarkably little noise, and in one swift movement, slashed under Nathan's shoulderblade with the serrated blade on its head.

The only noise Nathan made was that of his body hitting the tunnel floor.

Chapter Two: A Meeting

It was nine-thirty in the morning, but the early light was still only just beginning to break over Saffron City, the tall brick buildings dimly glowing golden as the clouds above obscured the brunt of the sunshine. No Spearow crowed this morning, and nobody roamed the streets on their way to work. The city was like a child on a Monday morning moaning to his mother for five more minutes in bed.

There were, however, two people entering from the east path that led to Lavender Town. One, a short, auburn-haired man wearing an immaculate white lab coat and carrying a clipboard under his arm, was chatting amiably to his companion, a young woman in a beige tanktop and tracksuit pants, who, by the look on her face, was not quite as excited by the topic of conversation as the man who was doing the talking.

"And so Professor Elm just smiled and told them that it had already been covered," babbled Dr. Felix Redwood, as they passed the first few houses, his face lit up like a search light. "And later I was talking to him and I said -"

"Would you SHUT UP?" his black-haired companion shouted, her face contorted with frustration and her fists clenched, "ever since we left Celadon City, you've just been going on and on and ON about Professor Elm! God, he's just a Professor! What are you, in love with him or something?" Felix stammered for a second before she amended her sentence. "Actually, wait, don't answer that."

"Well, I...uh...I-I'm sorry, Miss Nyman, I just -"

"I HAVE A FIRST NAME!"

"Um, yes. Kayleigh, um, well, I'm sorry. It's just that - that Professor Elm sent me here to pick up his special Porygon equipment."

"I know he did, Doctor -" she glared daggers at him while she spoke that word - "you've told me thirteen times now!"

"Yes." A pause. "Ahem."

They continued in silence further on for two or three minutes until they stood outside it. 'It' being the Silph Co. building, the gargantuan monster of a tower that stood higher than any other Saffron skyscraper, right in the centre of the city. Its millions of window panes gleamed in the brightening sunlight. You could probably see the reflection of Cerulean City on the highest point of its smooth silver walls if you could see that high up. Home to over four thousand employees on weekdays, it made for impressive viewing.

Closer to the ground, Felix and Kayleigh could see a police officer peering through the glass front door of the tower as they approached. His face was obscured by the shadow of his cap, but it was obvious that he was not a happy man. If he kept his hands slowly turning into a fist on the glass like he was he'd likely end up scratching the thing.

Kayleigh casually strolled up to him, still scowling, and tapped the officer on the back. "Excuse me, but we have to go in. Could you move out of the way?" She was met by an unexpectedly blank face. While the officer's body language was clearly angry at something, there seemed to be no emotion whatsoever on his visage. Perhaps he wanted to look calm as an officer, the girl didn't know, but it was vaguely disturbing.

"What do you think I'm trying to do?" The officer said quietly, left hand rattling the door handle. Nothing even budged. "It's locked."

"Uh-uh-I'm Felix Redwood!" piped up Felix from behind Kayleigh, having to stretch to be seen as his companion was a very tall girl, nearly six and a half foot. She ignored him.

“Well, they’re supposed to be open. I need to get in there, now!”

Meanwhile, a young man was approaching from the west entrance of the city. His brown hair was neat and tidy, cut short, but not too short, and he wore a pair of grey trousers, a blue cotton sweatshirt over a similarly-coloured T-shirt, and a nervous expression on his face. He could hear raised voices from the door of the Silph Co. building as he moved closer to it, and then three people, two men and a girl, arguing about something or other. Taking a deep breath as if to ready himself, the man crept closer so that he could hear what they were saying.

“That’s Officer Ivan Parlovic to you, ma’am, now please move out of the way. I’ll contact them by the intercom here.” This was the police officer, remarkably calm despite the loud complaints from his female companion.

“Didn’t you say you tried that already?”

The two probably would have kept this up if Felix hadn’t at that moment looked away and noticed the newcomer nearing their position. In an instant, he was sporting a cheery smile again and enthusiastically waved to him. “Hello there! Are you a resident? I haven’t seen many people up and about this morning!”

Shuffling uncomfortably, switching his weight from one foot to the other, the young man edged a little closer. “Um…no, I’m not from…around here. I-I won a competition…for a tour of the building?”

Dr. Redwood’s grin grew even broader when he heard this. “Oh, excellent! I don’t suppose you know how to get in then? Thing is, it’s locked and they should be open by now? Miss Nyman –“

“KAYLEIGH!”

“Well, yes, Kayleigh and the officer here can’t quite seem to decide on the best way to proceed. You don’t know anything, do you?” The telltale signs of stress were beginning to creep into Felix’s face, although it was still quite obvious that he was pleased to meet the newcomer.

The man tried to muster a rough smile, but failed somewhat, only achieving a slight twitch in his lip. “No…I’ve never been here before.”

“Ah, well,” Felix said, grimacing, “then we’re all in the same mess, it seems. Oh, yes, how silly of me to forget an introduction. You’ve, um, met Kayleigh Nyman here, and this is Officer Ivan…Parlovic, was it?” he turned to the uniformed man for confirmation, but received no response. “Parlovic it is, then. And I’m Doctor Felix Redwood. I’m one of Professor Elm’s aides, did you know that? You know who Professor Elm is, of course.”

“Uh, yeah. I’m…Simon Larson.”

“Larson? Professor Elm has a colleague called Larson, I think…”

As Felix began to babble about the Professor, Ivan took another look through the glass door. “You know, what I find odd is that there aren’t even any lights on in there,” he retracted from the door and put his hands on his hips, “now that is unusual. You’d expect even if they weren’t open that they’d have some lights on. You know, to see.”

Kayleigh was fuming. “That’s it! If they won’t open up, I’ll do it for them. I’m late!”

“What are you suggesting, Miss Nyman?” Felix’s voice.

For once, she did not protest. “This.” And with that, Kayleigh took a wild kung-fu kick at the glass, face full of concentrated anger, and smashed it in completely. An ear-splitting crash resounded in the lobby ahead of them and burst out of the door, followed by the quiet tinkling of pieces of glass scattering on the floor. At once there was a flurry of voices, everyone save Simon complaining about something – Felix about the noise, Ivan about the course of action, and Kayleigh at their standing still. Her athletic body to the fore, the girl pushed them all through the door frame and into the darkened lobby.

Their voices were all silenced, however, when, suddenly, with an eerie, fading screech, the door frame was gone, and in its place appeared a solid stone wall.

Very interesting. Although one thing leaves me confused--I know the implication is that the virus was basically the reason for Absol to kill Nathan, but *why*? Did it get into Absol's brain? Was it because it *was* an Absol? Did Absol already dislike him?

That would explain it then. =P I was busy pasting the second chapter from another forum, so don't expect another update for a week or so.

I must say, that is an excellent opening chapter. It took me by surprise. I'll be looking for your updates.
