It seems you people are way too focused on Pokemon, types, evolutions, and locations at the moment. The rival is very important in Pokemon games in my opinion.

So what do you think will this game have a female or a male rival? What might their name be? Will they be nice or mean? Discuss.

Also would you like to have a traveling buddy with you? I think that would be a nice feature/addition to the games and its definitely something we have yet to see in the games.
Discuss as well.

If you want a poll on a certain thing just tell me and I'll add one.

They should let you choose between 2 rivals (boy & girl) the same way they let you choose the character/gender you play as.

As for personality, bring back the jerks, no more of this nice guy nonsense.

I do like the concept of traveling companion, though how they would handle teams and level ups and moves makes me doubt it. As for the rival... I think it should like what they did with Silver. Some trainer you encounter at some point who sparks a fierce rivalry with you. Maybe not as dark as Silver is, but something like that.

The concept of the traveling companion is kind of mixed for me. It's a neat concept, but I have doubts to how well it would actually work.
In DPP, we already sort of have it, but it's only for brief moments and that's it. To be honest, I don't really see it being something throughout an entire game.

While I don't really want another jerk rival, I would really like to see one with a bit of a rough personality. Not a total antagonist like Silver, but one who'll help you from time to time.
Blue in FRLG was close to this. While he was still a jerk, he seemed a bit nicer in FRLG than in RBGY.

You mean optional, right?

Because there's no way in hell I want a buddy tagging along, turning every single one of my battles into double battles.

Also, the concept of the 'rival' needs to be revitalized. Maybe not so much a rival as a mentor that trains you along the way. Your fights turn into sessions in which you unlock certain abilities or moves and then are entitled to teach them to your Pokemon if you desire.

I would like the Rival to stay a jerk.
It just add's that one more element kind of thing.

This can also be said for a nice rival, but the story around a nice rival would be kind of sketchy, wouldn't you think?

Thanks.

Competition is more fun when there is antagonism, all good rivalry's are like that.

They wouldnt need to get rid of the rival to have that, they could just add a mentor character and still keep a rival.

Here's the twist: Your Mentor IS your rival. You still fight him like usual, but he's aiming to stop you from reaching the top.

The concept of a rival is really stale to me at this point, along with many other decisions. Which is why I frivolously think of ways they could change it up. A rival for the sake of having a rival has been played out.

rivalry is something everyone has in real life. It's gonna be in the games as one of the few realistic things there.

Itd be a pretty lame mentor if you kick his ass every time you meet, just saying, itd feel dumb having a guy show up who is suppose to be more experienced or whatever and tries to teach you only for you to pwn him time and time again.

And as for a rival being stale, its been only used as many times as EVERYTHING else in this game franchise has, im not buying that stale stuff, must have rival.

Rivalry suggests competition, yes? And the competition has always been 'who gets to be Pokemon Champion first'. So maybe if they add more competition instead of just 'Collect the Badges' and 'Beat these Dudes' then we'd get a better Me versus That Guy/Gal thing going.

If it's any consolation, I felt Barry was really good. Perhaps if they break the mold further they'd stumble upon something really extravagent.

Mentor's accomplish what they must to instruct their pupils. If that means intentionally losing, then so be it. All the more sweeter when he realizes you won against him completely from your own power.

Being stale comes from playing the games over and over. I'll still buy the new ones no-doubt but if there's another cookie-cutter rival I'll probably just sigh and move on.

Yes! DARKER! MUAHAHAHAHA!!! Have the main villain as your buddy!

The traveling companion: there should be one because there hasn't been one in past games. Plus, it'd be cool traveling with someone else rather than by yourself.

And like most people said, the rival stays as a jerk.

Have 2 rivals. One of each.

Choose your poison.

I would like to pick my rival's gender or the main rival to be female. (We had a female champion, so why not have a female rival?)

I don't want a traveling companion, it didn't turn out so well in Colosseum. *coughRuicough*

No, I don't want you to choose the gender of your Rival. (S)he is a NPC. You choose the protagonist's gender because it's supposed to be you, but the rival is a NPC, part of the storyline. Therefore, if we get to choose our Rival's gender, why not choose the Proffessors gender? And the villain? Oh, and let's also choose the types for our new Gym Leaders. You know what? They should give us a blank game and let us write the plot!

Instead, let's just have a female rival for a change. And for the traveling companions, I'd like a Gym Leader to travel with you for a route or two. It would be a nod/homage to the anime and since GL are supposed to be relevant to the plot, that could make them more interesting. After all, in HGSS we had trades with Leaders, so why not letting one of them to join us for a while?

I disagree, id rather choose the gender of my rival than have a female rival, dont know about you guys, but im the type of guy who imagines stomping my rivals face into the dirt after kicking their ass, especially jerks like Silver and Green (or Blue, whatever), and if the rival is a girl then that just wouldn't work for me.

(probably why i dislike having May as a rival in gen 3, gotta imagine being a good sport and stuff or else id just be a bully, same with that Wally kid, nobody wants to pick on sickly kids like him, thats no fun at all... you know, Gen 3 was just a crappy gen for rivals for me...)

I would like two rivals like in R/S/E, only that we get to see more of them. One male, one female. The character you don't play as can fulfill the role of Dawn/Lucas in D/P/P and Hibiki or Kotone/Lyra in HG/SS.

Don't be sexist, girls can be jerkasses too.

he doesn't like the idea of abusing women. Understandable, but it is still sexist, since he is absolutely fine with doing that to guys.
