I don't know if many people have noticed this, but the fandom seems to exhibit a 'Rotating Nostalgia' of sorts.

I am unsure of nostalgia for Gen 1 when 2 was current, but when Generation 3 rolled around, everyone wanted 1 and 2 back. Granted, RS could not trade with the first two sets of games, but it was the first yearning for older areas.

When FRLG rolled around, people wanted GS back too. RS was still the cause of many broken bases, being it monster design or Hoenn itself.

During Generation 4's Shinnoh run, the nostalgia for G2 was still there, same with the dislike of Generation 3. There is an article on Bulbapedia about the dislike of Hoenn and how it's 'unjustified' or something to that degree, not that that is correct, Hoenn itself, imho, is a very 'take it or leave it area'

When HGSS was looming ever closer, the fandom suddenly got a group of people who really had it in for Johto. Granted, Johto has issues, but it was the fandom's most beloved area thanks to it being released in 'Pokemon's Golden Era' of the late ninties.

What is even more astounding is that with the sudden G2 hate, Generation 3 apologists and appreciators came. The series of games that were considered the low point of the franchise, and created so many breaks within the fandom, was now the new baby. The one with the 'boring area covered in artificial obsticals and too.much.water', the one with the 'ugly' pokemon, the one with the 'ineffectual villains'.

What is even stranger, is that not only did HGSS bring G2 hatred and G3 love, there is also a sudden wave of G4 hatred, including Platinum, the game considered 'perfect, as of yet'

Are people really going through 'OMG I WANT IT REMADE! Now this region blows. I WANT THIS OLDER ONE REMADE! Now that blows. REMAKE THIS AGAIN!' or is there just a vocal minority or something? It's quite strange. I've heard of vindication through history, but then there's this.

I think Nintendo spoiled a lot of people, but it works out for them because if they do come out with remakes of Gen 3 they will make a lot of money because a lot of people will buy it because of whatever features or etc etc. Plus by then the generation that first picked up and started with Gen 3 will probably be slightly older and Nintendo may want to hook them again.

With me I always liked Gen 1 and Gen 2, but had mixed reactions about Gens 3 and 4. I wouldn't mind if they continued to remake games, as long as there is a balance to it.

Ahhh, I actually remember when there was GS hate. A lot of people got angry and furious how so many notable parts of Kanto were chopped away due to the memory capacity of the game cartridges.

Although Gen 3 is "considered" hated by many others, it actually had many brand new features (which are now staples to Pokemon games and battle mechanisms). Many of these new features, though were less recognizable or observable by players - so loved. Additionally, the expected "Region to be linked to the rest of previous regions" that was produced in hype from GS was no longer available which produced much dissapointment(even though Hoenn was actually much larger than Kanto or Johto).

It's interesting you would note on this cycle, I've witnessed it when so many mainstream Pokemon games+Remakes come out.

I think it's kind of part-due to the over-speculation, like for example - some of the threads in BMG's B/W board.

I agree with the first post, I remember everyone saying "Johto is my favorite region", and after everyone got Johto, now everyone's favorite region has changed to Hoenn.
Though I personally don't want a remake of Ruby and Sapphire, unless there are big, I mean BIG changes in the story And maps.

But anyway, I'm sure Nintendo will make money with remakes of older games, because there's children who play Pokemon but never actually played the older games like Red, Gold, and now even Ruby and Sapphire.

I've been playing the games since Gen 1. I have never officially owned a 3rd gen game but what I've played of it, I have to say that it is better then Gen 2.

And like what they did with Gen 1 and Gen 2, I'm sure Gen 3 will have remakes after gen 3 becomes 10 years old which will happen 2012-2013.

Either way the games do get slightly better and slight worse depending on what you look at.

Gen 2 had the more awesome Poketech thingy, Gen 1 started the whole thing, gen 3 it was finally in color and had a rather interesting storyline, gen 4 had more expansive places to explore, gen 5 so far has the most interesting graphics.

Johto is still my favorite region... and Hoenn is my least favorite. R/S and D/P just got away from what Pokemon was in the first place, IMHO. I don't know if it's just that Kanto is gone in them, or ifit's the lack of Team Rocket in them, or what, but they're just... different.

It's the circle of Life,
and it moves us all...

It happens. Give it five years and people will be hating on everything Gen IV and V.

Well, I got to agree with the "rotation" thing, mainly because Emerald was my first game, and when DP came out it all seemed weird to me, same happened to the people who started playing GS.

Hating on things is overrated. Loving things is better. So, I think HGSS is nearly perfect, with the only serious flaw being lack of good training areas in higher levels. But I don't understand why Gen III is the one whose Pokemon get the hate when Gen IV had SO MANY FUCKING EVOLVED FORMS, BABIES, AND LEGENDARIES. Uuuuuuugh. Gen III's Pokemon are sorely underrated, for some reason.

I think this is mainly because there are now newer fans who started playing Pokemon with R/S, and to them this is their first gen.

Likewise when Gen III was, "current," everyone used to talk about how crappy the Johto region was in the games and how small it was.

I wouldn't be surprised if R/S remakes happen.

I've been around for all the games and I still find generation III hate a little puzzling and the people who jump back and forth between supporting certain generations confuse me even more.

I have always liked the Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn regions. Being small when Kanto and Johto premiered caused me to easily like them. So all the Pokemon from those two generations are rather nostalgic for me. The Hoenn region debuted when I was a little bit older and although I found the vast amounts of water annoying I still enjoyed the Pokemon. Sinnoh was a huge disappointment though. I remember only playing Diamond version for about three days and finding myself extremely bored. The Pokemon and characters were just unmemorable for me.

One thing I have noticed is that there are a lot of newer fans. When I say that I mean fans who started playing the Pokemon games when the third generation came out. So because they didn't grow up with the first and second generation Pokemon they don't feel the same nostalgia to them. As for GS hate I don't know much about it. I haven't really met anyone who played GS and ended up hating it.

RSE > RBY/FRLG > DPPt > GSC/HGSS

I started with RBY in Summer 2000. RBY are classics and I feel they are strong games, if a bit unrefined and basic. GSC were great when they were out, but playing HGSS made me remember what I disliked about them. RSE are my favourites, because of the region and the Pokemon. I didn't really like DPPt until Platinum.

Nostalgia does rotate, and RSE got a lot of hate during the 4th generation, while GSC received a lot of praise. That's changing now, though, as there are more people standing up for RSE these days.

I loved my Red version, but for some reason I never got Gold or Silver. When I got back in to Pokemon, it was with Sapphire. Emerald is still one of my favorite games of all time. DPPt are ok, some of the Pokemon are good, some of the areas are cool... and then some of the Pokemon are REALLY stupid IMO *cough* new evos *cough*, and some of the areas are ust kind of boring or unoriginal...

The way I see it, Kanto is classic, you can't hate on Kanto. I like it a lot, the region layout is pretty cool, and there's some pretty unique stuff in Gen 1.

HGSS was ok, the first thing that hit me about the Johto story though was the whole "Here take a Pokemon!" thing in the beginning. Sure, Kanto did that, but it seemed unoriginal after seeing Hoenn's and Sinnoh's opening. Johto is a nice place, but it's not that big, and it's just the temperate climate all over like in Kanto. I understand why that is, but it seemed empty to me.

Hoenn was a beautiful region. A volcano, a desert, a dense forest, and all that ocean. I loved it. And there are great Pokemon in Hoenn. I don't see why people don't like Hoenn's Pokemon.

Sinnoh was ok. They ditched all the good battle frontier facilities though. And all those evos...

Isshu looks good from here, but only time will tell if it brings enough variety and enough good Pokemon for me to love it like Hoenn.

Don't tempt fate. XP

I don't really hate Kanto, but I do find it to be the weakest of all Regions. Before FRLG, all characters in the game were pretty bland and one-dimensional. At least for me, it felt as if they had a generic personality, and there were very few exceptions. The scenery is even worse. Meadows, trees, caves, cities... that's all you see. The only kinda different places are the Pokémon Mansion and the Bridge of Silence, and I guess you can count water areas. 2nd Gen wasn't all that better, but at least gave Johto different trees, more divergent cities and more interesting places. HGSS finally polished this as well, though Kanto is still largely generic. It is much better than what it used to be, at least. Besides Giovanni. All this is just me, though. :p

Anyway, I've noticed this trend as well. I remember I was one of very few people that loved Gen 3 and disliked Gen 2 back when Ruby/Sapphire were new. Now at least there's more that can appreciate Hoenn. I've been playing since the 1st Generation, though, so I dunno. I'm not the nostalgic kind of person, either. Like, not at all. I move on very quickly, and I can always play my old 3rd Gen games if I feel like it. Plus, after HGSS, I'd rather not have an Emerald Remake if they're not going to fix the few flaws it had, seeing how HGSS did very little to make the old experience better, if at all. I'd always welcome a new adventure in Hoenn, though, as I loved the Region and the 3rd Generation remains as my top favorite.

My interest in Pokémon tends to falter with even Generations, but odd Generations usually renew it. This is happening once again, as I found the 4th Generation to be overall awful, though I'll blame the weakest pair Versions in the history of the series for such classification. Platinum is awesome in every way. Then there's HGSS... meh. The Spin-offs kinda helped, but not that much. At least 5th Generation is looking as exciting as the 3rd one did, so I'll gladly stay around playing all games and enjoying each of them, at least when they're enjoyable.

But yeah, I guess the main reason is that Pokémon fans are rotated out every so often.

Kanto is also my least favorite region, on HGSS the last time I visited Kanto was to finish up the main storyline. The only interesting parts for me in Kanto was The Pokemon Mansion and the tower in Lavender Town, but both were removed in Gen II.

I think I escaped this fact due to my very strange circumstances of having actually experienced GSC after RSE. (It's a long story...)

Its interesting really. I think that the fans have always existed its just they have become more vocal in expressing their love for a certain generation.
