The Storm Island region is home to the events of a fanfic I'm writing, featuring totally original (well, kinda) characters, a new region and new adventures. Here is a map of the region.

-- Political History --

Life as humans know it began on the island nearly 700 years ago, when the first settlers arrived from the Sinnoh region in search of personal peace and a warmer homeland. The first settlment on the island was known as Cristalia, a small village that was settled on the small island chain that makes up Crystal Bay. As time moved on, people branched out and clans were formed. The most numerous of all the clans, the Storm Clan, rose to power, subjugating and absorbing the others as its influence spread across the island.

No more than 100 years passed before Cristalia was lost to time, victim of a massive hurricane that swept over the southern half of Storm Island. As the Storm Clan and the remaining few struggled to survive the disaster that had struck the island, they left their shattered homes in search for a more hospitable location. Travelling far to the north, they settled in a valley just off the north western coast of the island. There, Ambrose the Bold took charge in building their new settlement. For his leadership, he was nominated as the first King of the Storm Clan, a position he gladly accepted. Under his rule, Castle Ambrose was built as the spiritual center of Storm Island. The cities of Azure Ridge, Crestfall, Silvermist and Blackwood Grove were soon established under his reign.

As the generations passed, the crown was passed down from father to son like any normal monarchy. Three hundred years after the establishment of the monarchy, two children of the royal family, twin brothers, were in line for the throne. Both unwilling to share, Lord Torvald and Lord Haynes began feuding. What started as an argument over the dinner table evolved into Lord Haynes being exiled from Castle Ambrose, along with his numerous followers. Unwilling to accept defeat and intent on overtaking the family crown, Lord Haynes took his followers and retreated to the Ambervale Foothills, up in the mountains on the east side of the island.

Three years of peace was all that Castle Ambrose experience after the exile of Lord Haynes. Shortly after, the Ambervale Clan's armies marched up to the castle gates unannounced and mounted an attack. Many people and Pokémon were injured or killed in the battle, but the Storm Clan remained steadfast. They pushed the Ambervale Clan's forces back to the eastern half of the island, engaging in a deadly stalemate that continued for years to come. The key that would end the conflict in favour of the Storm Clan was control of The Aerie, a lookout point on the top of Mount Hope, the central mountain of Storm Island. There, the Storm Clan would be able to keep an eye on Lord Haynes' kingdom and the movements of its people.

Despite constant defeat by the Ambervale Clan, King Torvald of the Storm Clan was intent on capturing the outpost. In one last ditch effort, he appeared on the front lines amongst his fellow clansmen, inspiring them. As if taken from a fantasy book, legend has it that King Torvald and his twin brother Lord Haynes engaged in battle against each other atop the mountain, fighting bitterly to the end. At the end of the battle, the Storm Clan was victorious, but the damage had been done. Lord Haynes was killed and King Torvald mortally wounded. Returning to Castle Ambrose as the kingdom's hero, Torvald was a different man. A wiser but broken man. Seeing his end coming soon, he swore Roderick, his son of six years, in as King of the Storm Clan, dying later that night in the arms of his wife.

Roderick was unfit to rule on his own, so his mother, Queen Calia, made most of the decisions. With her swift and somewhat brutal action, the civil war between the Storm and Ambervale Clans was ended shortly after the King's death. Castle Ambervale was raided; no prisoners were taken.

A Golden Age came to Storm Island as King Roderick came of age. Understanding that power corrupts the hearts of those who weild it, he officially ended the reign that the monarchy had over the peoples of Storm Island. They would be free to act as they saw fit, free to move about from town to town, marry their lovers rather than their arranged husbands and wives, and in general do as they wish. With that, he closed Castle Ambrose to the public, withdrawing the monarchy and setting the groundwork for today's society. The rule of the Storm Clan ended on a positive note.

Today, the Storm Clan's numbers are dwindling. With the recent death of Queen Calia II, the only remaining members of the Royal Family and the Court of Lords are King Matthias, grandson of King Torvald, and his son, Prince Edinbridge. In keeping with the traditions his father set, King Matthias has kept the castle closed to the general population of Storm Island, opening its gates once a year for the Dragon Festival, a lavish celebration of the demise of the Ambervale Clan. Prince Edinbridge has urged his father to open the castle up to the general public year round, encouraging a cultural rebirth of the people of Storm Island, yet little has changed.

Since the war ended, life has been relatively peaceful on Storm Island. The one anomaly from this norm was the eruption of Mount Incendia, formerly known as "Sister Hope" 12 years ago. The eruption caused many landslides and earthquakes that rattled the eastern coast of Storm Island, taking a particularly heavy toll on the town of Cinder Hill. Very few know the truth behind why the long-dormant volcano suddenly and violently exploded, destroying the town. Despite the hardship and setback, Jet Barrin, Gym Leader of Cinder Hill, has rebuilt the town from scratch, forging a new shining future for the citizens of the town.

-- Creation Legend --
The people of Storm Island are not keen on the beliefs held in other regions, scoffing at the idea of Arceus being ultimate creator and Lugia being the master of the elemental birds. Instead, they have developed their own beliefs during the early days of the Storm Clan. As time goes on, as with many other beliefs, the idea falls out of style and favor of the people who once held it with reverence. Not many people believe in the myth anymore.

The myth states that the earth was created when the Mountain King (Groudon) and the Queen of the Seas (Kyogre) worked together in harmony, filling a lifeless void with the planet we now know today. However, the planet was lifeless. The Mountain King and the Queen of the Seas enlisted the help of the elements, scorching the land with fire, freezing the land with ice and zapping the landscape with the spark of life. Despite the efforts of the elemental birds, the plan seemed to fail. With one last wish, the Mountain King and Queen of the Seas brought forth the essence of life, Shaymin, causing the chain reaction of events that would create life as we know it today.

-- Cities, Routes and Places of Interest --
Storm Island has 13 major cities, as well as a number of "fluff towns" to make the place feel more believable as a region. The route system on Storm Island follows after Sinnoh, starting with Route 301 and ending with Route 327.

Cities and Towns (Alphabetical Order)
  • Aldrysse Township (Full writeup of city history, landmarks, etc coming soon)
  • Ambervale City (Full writeup of city history, landmarks, etc coming soon)
  • Azure Ridge (blah blah you know the deal)
  • Blackwood Grove
  • Blueleaf Village
  • Castle Ambrose
  • Chestnut Lake
  • Cinder Hill
  • Crestfall
  • Silvermist City
  • Snowfall Village
  • The Aerie
  • The Crossroads

Points of Interest
  • Mount Hope: Storm Island's tallest mountain, situated right in the middle of the island. In fact, it's the only thing really tall enough to be considered a mountain.
  • Mount Incendia: A volcano that blew its top 12 years ago, destroying Cinder Hill, Mount Incendia is rumoured to be the home of Moltres.
  • Storm Island Battle Frontier: The Storm Island Battle Frontier is built on an island in the middle of the ocean, almost due east from Azure Ridge.
  • Catrianna Corporation: Storm Island's answer to Silph Co., the Catrianna Corporation is where innovation and human ingenuity coincide. Catrianna Corp's HQ is in Ambervale City.
  • Acorn Lodge: An establishment similar to the Trainer House in Viridian City (Gold/Silver, HG/SS), the Acorn Lodge is the main attraction Chestnut Lake has to offer.
  • Crystal Bay: Also known as Route 303, Crystal Bay is where humans first inhabited Storm Island. It is also home to Reginald Kerk, a bright bulb in Pokémon research.
  • Blackwood Forest: A very thick and dark forest where natural sunlight seldom reaches the forest floor. It surrounds the town of Blackwood Grove, covering a large portion of the southwestern part of the island.
  • Pacifica Sea Bridge: The Pacifica Sea Bridge is Jet Barrin's answer to a cavein that rendered travel between Slate Valley and Route 308 impossible. It stretches from Cinder Hill to the northern end of Route 308.
  • Pacifica Harbor: Another one of Jet Barrin's pet projects, Pacifica Harbor is a manmade island off the western coast of Cinder Hill, due to open soon. Regular travel between Veilstone City in Sinnoh and Vermilion City in Kanto is scheduled to begin as soon as the harbor opens.
  • Castle Ambervale: Castle Ambervale has been abandoned since the Storm Clan's armies marched in and slaughtered the inhabitants at the end of the war... Or has it? Despite centuries of no maintenance, the castle still stands firm as if it still active and is rumoured to be haunted and cursed.
  • Ambervale Anti-matter Power Plant: The Ambervale Power Plant is using experimental technology developed by the Catrianna Corporation, using anti-matter to power the entire island.
  • Monument to King Torvald: The Monument to King Torvald stands in the spot where he killed Lord Haynes atop The Aerie. It was built by King Matthias.
  • The Great Gate: A mysterious and seemingly unopenable door is set into the moutain peak at The Aerie. Inside is rumoured to be the resting place of a great treasure, but nobody really knows just what's on the other side of that door.

-- Geography and Climate --
Storm Island is just that; an island that's victim of many powerful ocean storms. While many consider the island to have only one mountain, Mount Hope, a volcano is also on the island, known as Mount Incendia. Outside of that, Storm Island is rather drab. Mountainous in the north and north-eastern parts, long stretches of sandy beaches in the southern half as well as the north-western bit. The Storm Island League and Victory Road are situated in the snowy foothills just east of The Crossroads.

The climate varies wildly depending on where you are on the island, something that has baffled scientists. The northern end is snowy, despite being much farther south than the rest of the regions. The southern end is often victim to intense heat waves, while the rest of the lower lying areas of the island are temperate. The Aerie, the highest settlement on the island, experiences year round warm temperatures. Seasons don't exist on Storm Island for the most part.

-- Finally --
More info will come in later posts as more is written. The background story of Storm Island, its cities and the characters who live here is still being written as I type. There is a lot to cover.
