It all started back in 1998. I was almost done with the 2nd grade and was excited to see what new adventures awaited me in the 3rd grade. i already knew that the a few of the teachers would be different and that the schoolwork might be a little harder but one thing i didnt expect is that pokemon would totally take over my friends and my life way back then. The first glimpse of pokemon came courtsey of nintendo power with a mini magazine known as pokemon power. it covered the the original red and blue games and also talked about how the cartoon was coming soon. it even featured a comic which was based on the animated series. i didnt really care much until september 1998 when i got my first glimpse of the pokemon cartoon on tv. afterthat nothing was ever the same. acouple weeks later i got the red version of the video game. i loved it and so did my friends. we would spend hours battling collecting and trading. at this time pokemon was just starting to pick up in popularity merchandise was very rare so my aunt made us pokemon shirts by ironing on graphics which were found on the internet and then putting our name and pokemon master after it. she also knitted us pokemon toys i remember i had a pikachu and i cant remember what else but it was pretty cool. then the official toys started arriving such as those pokemon figures with the toy gameboy that shot the red ball with the string and those clear and purple pokeballs that also came with the early figures. i also had clear super balls with pokemon such as pikachu or charmander in them and who can forget the early talking pokemon like pikachu and meowth which walked when you put them in your palm. funny thing about meowth is that he wasnt translated and spoke japanese which at the time was somewhat scary and funny to us. anyways later on like in october 1998 kfc had a promotion when you buy
4 different pokemon plush which included zubat, volpex, dratini and seal kind of random espically since those pokemon were kind of obscure compared to pikachu etc. soon enough i had more pokemon toys and plush and by this time shirts and videos vere made available needless to say i got them. eventually pokemon was on everything starting in early 1999 food, toys, videos, games, clothes and cards whatever you could think of pokemon was on and i had it all i literally ate slept and breathed pokemon. i collected all the promotional goodies on lunchables i joined the pokemon club at on cue i saw the movies and even was going to go as ash at halloween but unfortuantely i got the flu so i never got to. then in 2000 gold and silver hit i of couse got gold and just like before we traded and battled untils our hears were content. but then in 2001 after seeing the 3rd movie in theaters and getting stadium 2 i could feel my pokemon fetish leaving me in favor of dragon ball z which kind of took over in 2000 but not enough for me to toallly abandon pikachu and pals. my final pokeism was crystal which by this time wasnt that great. sadly pokemon was over to my friends and me and we were on to the next thing. but nothing has ever captured the magical feeling of poening a new pack of pokemon cards owhich i never learned to actually play but still had thousands with many of them being rare. or watching the cartoon every weekday at 3pm. pokemon is my top 7 childhood memoroies and just like teenage mutant ninja turtles is to tose in the 80's pokemon is nastalgic to me. thankfully pokemon is still around eventhough i dont watch it anymore i will occasionally check it out but it has changed too much for me. but even though it will never be as big as it one was it will still hold a special part in my heart. ps i also kind of had a crush on officer jenny and ash's mom call me weird but i was a kid at the time. so i guess it was ok
