Ok, this isn't a firm belief by anyone, not even me and if you need to disagree, please do so to your full extent.
I don't have any solid evidence but do you think that the anime is actually a story being told my an older Ash? Like the narrarator is Ash writing some sought of auto-biography. He could be telling the story of Ash Ketchum's [the Legendary Pokemon Master!] adolecsent years?
You know how sometimes there are stills in the show that look like some sought of painting with cool lighting effects? I mean, listen to the theme songs: "I wanna be the very best" or "Kid from Pallet town with a brand new world to see. Don't know what's ahead but it won't get the best of me"

Ok, that was a pretty crappy idea but its just a thought. I have also made a connection between Pokemon and ancient Asian legends:
An arrogant young man/boy [Ash] takes on the Great Journey* [Indigo League] to earn power. But as he takes on this great journey he travels, makes friends and learns along the way. After he has learned everything and completed the journey, he has learned true purpose. in Pokemon's case, its that fact that a true Pokemon master isn't someone who has caught every breed of Pokemon or finished all the leagues, its someone who can truly learn from Pokemon.

*Great Journey is referred to the pathway to Enlightenment* in Buddism.
*Enlightenment is to become the Buddha and realise that you do not need anything.

the anime is actually a story being told my an older Ash

Me and my sister joked about this being the case early on.

It might be.

The narrator's voice is far from what I imagine Ash's voice to have when he grows up. So I don't think it's Ash narrating his life.

Nah.
TV-theme songs may often use the words "I" and "Me", that doesn't mean the story is being told in first-person.

Besides if Ash was narrating, why would he say "Ash and his friends"?

The narrator is Ookido-hakase (Oak) in the Japanese version, isn't he?

^ The songs mentioned are dub songs, so they wouldn't have evidence of Ash narrating in the Japanese version. Ash could have a really different voice in the future (Timmy did in The Fairly OddParents in "Channel Chasers.")

In either version, there'd have to be an explanation of why the narrator's speaking in third person. (Unless that's to throw us off from thinking that the narrator is Ash as an adult.)

There... really isn't much to suggest that the narrator is Ash in either version. The only way we could know for sure is to wait until the last episode.

The narrator is Ookido-hakase (Oak) in the Japanese version, isn't he?

Dogasu's Backpack says it's Ueda Yuuji who does the TV narration. Ishizuka Unshou does Professor Oak's.

But now that I think about it, they do sound similar...

He could just be telling the story in a kind of "a boy I once knew" style... it's plausible IMO...

I think Prof. Oak is probably the narrator it seems to make more sense then Ash.

The narrator is nobody. He usually calls the twerps "our heroes" and such, which... does not sound like something anyone would call themselves unless their name is John Smith. Not to mention the narrator has on rare occassions been affected by Jigglypuff's singing and I think some other things.

Well, on second thought, it does kind of sound like an ongoing bedtime story a parent is telling their child or children. I suppose Ash could be giving himself a pseudonym and calling himself and his friends "our heroes" out of modesty, but that's really a stretch. And it can't be Oak; he wouldn't know the details to such an extent. Maybe it could be a group of all the main characters telling the story together... XD

But anyway! While the narrator is clearly just for the sake of the viewing audience, I could definetly see the series's finale featuring an adult Ash saying something like "and that is how I became a Pokémon Master! And saved the world a few times, and traveled through time, and helped crippled criminal organizations, and met more legendaries than anyone else on Earth, etc."

Interesting theory. I honestly never thought twice about the narrator but now...

If Ash were the narrator, he'd have mentioned that he later married Misty. Or, to be serious, there would be no interest in him from other girls because Ash wouldn't have noticed it.

Now that I think about it, there's no way the narrator can be Ash. I definitely remember moments where it seems like he knows what TR is doing, obviously when they're far far away from the twerps.

I think that's a really great idea. Having Ash tell the story of his life is so sweet. Too be honest, I never really thought about who the narrator is, or why they're so interested in Ash's life XD
