Hello Bulbaforum users, I'm Trouble, and this is not your average journey fic. It's an epic story, a battle of good vs. evil, full of tortuous plot twists, and tormenting emotions. A young boy plagued by his own actions, consequences, and a source of evil always following him.
He has few friends, his Pokemon included, and is on a path to complete corruption. He may be, in fact, halfway there. The question is: does he dare go any closer?

Chapter I: Humble beginnings

The ceiling popcorn fascinated the young man laying on his bed as he made out different shapes by connecting the pieces in his mind. Bringing smaller things together to see a bigger picture, fascinating how the mind worked. The young man sat up slowly. His alarm had just gone off for the morning, someone had made an appointment with him to give him a gift. The one bequeathing this gift, a well-known professor, had to leave town early, and this was the only available time to give the gift.

The young man stepped out of bed and stretched his legs, looking at the pile of clothes on his floor, searching for what to wear. First looking for what he would like to wear, then distinguishing the clean clothes from the dirty ones (as he kept both in the same spot on his floor). He picked out a clean-smelling ensemble for the day and headed out of his room and into the hallway that led to the dining room. He didn't feel hungry enough for breakfast, though perhaps it was too early for breakfast. 5:00 AM. He could wait until later, perhaps his mom would be awake when he got home from the appointment. With a few minutes to spare before he had to leave, he turned on the television.
In his tired state, the television was just flashing colors and booming voices, but it all seemed to relax him. This early in the morning, he would often find himself nervous for some reason. He shook his head and looked at the digital clock under the television. 5:20 AM, time to head out.

It took only five minutes to get to the library to meet the professor. The young man searched the library, but no sign of the professor yet. He decided to sit down and wait. His eyes were heavy. Sleep. Darkness...

"Jeremy, hello!"

The young man jumped, startled by the noise and mention of his name.

"Jeremy, it's me, Professor Hans. It's good to finally meet you, Jeremy. I've heard many good things about you."

The young man, Jeremy, now completely awake, stood to shake hands with the professor as he spoke.

"Now, Jeremy," said the professor, "it's because of these good reports on your character that I'd like to give you
something that many people covet. It will challenge you as a person, but it will grow you in so many ways. Before I give you this gift, Jeremy, I want to know if you are up for a challenge."

Jeremy nodded, an eager look in his eyes.

"Very well, Jeremy, I'd like you to meet someone special... your 'gift.' Here is your very own Pokemon, a friend, and a partner that should suit you quite well. Say hello to Aron."

As the professor spoke, he pulled an orb from his pocket, a Pokeball, and let it open on the ground next to the table Jeremy had sat.

Out came the most precious creature Jeremy had ever seen. With a silver sheen, and beautiful blue eyes, Jeremy was captivated.

The professor saw exactly what Jeremy was experiencing.

"Jeremy, would you like to name your Aron? You seem like you will get along quite well with your new friend."

Jeremy looked at the Pokemon for a few seconds longer, then turned to the professor and said, "Yes, Professor Hans. I'll call him Aub."

The professor seemed confused about the odd name of choice, but carried on. "Very well then. I hope you and Aub learn to fully appreciate the bond that you will form. Take good care of Aub, Jeremy. Everyone is expecting great things from you.

Jeremy knelt next to his new friend and whispered, "today, nothing can go wrong."

Re: The tales of Jonah: Quest for Power

Eh, there's not much in the first chapter. It's just a person getting his first Pokemon. While this is a major event, you don't seem to flesh it out much.

Doesn't matter, though. We wait eagerly for the second chapter, which will have some actual story in it.

Re: The tales of Jonah: Quest for Power

Ah! A prompt response! Thanks for the feedback!
And you're right on both counts, not much in chapter 1, but I'm hoping that the fact that this "Jonah" character hasn't shown up in his own tale yet will hook some readers into the real story coming up.

Re: The tales of Jonah: Quest for Power

Some more notes about this narrative:
Along with some original story about Jeremy, whom you've already met, and later, Jonah, this story is also about a lot of actions I've taken in games that I've played, but with a completely original twist on it. Along with that, some characters are based on people I've known in real life, with their names changed, but personalities in tact. Perhaps, later in the story, some of you may catch on to what I did in the games, and the way I portray it in the story. It should be fun for everyone, and I hope you all enjoy!

Chapter II: What do you Expect?

Jeremy looked around the library, now a bit unsure why the professor had chosen to meet here. Was this really an appropriate place to let Pokemon run around outside their Pokeballs? Jeremy shrugged, "Oh well" he thought. "I'd best head home. Mom should be excited about this too!" Jeremy looked at his Aron... Aub. The professor seemed confused about the name choice, but Jeremy knew exactly what it meant. It was short for the human name "Aubrey," a regal name, literally meaning "Elvin King," to Jeremy, it had the feel of a warrior, and that's what his Aron reminded him of.

He looked again at Aub, who was just staring back, perhaps anticipating something. Aub deserved affection. Jeremy bent over and made an attempt to pick up the small Pokemon. Something cracked as he made the effort. Jeremy's back cracked! Aub was incredibly heavy for his small size, perhaps something Jeremy should have seen coming considering all that Aub seemed to be made of: hardened metal. Jeremy hunched over, hurt, and gave a playfully angry look to Aub.

"Wow," he whispered, "you're one incredible creature." Jeremy tried to straighten out his back. More cracking noises. "Okay, buddy, you can relax in the Pokeball, yeah?" Jeremy picked up the Pokeball the professor left on the table and aimed it at Aub. With a great show of light, Aub was in the Pokeball. Jeremy smiled from ear to ear. He already loved his new buddy. Time to go home.

Jeremy made his way home, eager to show his mother what the professor gave him. His mom was awake, cooking eggs and preparing toast covered in strawberry jelly. Jeremy hardly noticed how hungry he was, his anticipation to tell the world about his new friend growing more and more.

"Mom!" he shouted, "Professor Hans is a genius!"

Jeremy's mother, startled slightly by the shouting, let out a small "eep!" sound. Jeremy laughed.

"Sorry, mom, didn't mean to startle you."

Jeremy's mom settled down and let out a chuckle. "Oh, Jeremy, it's you! What did Professor Hans have for you? Was it worth waking up so early?"

Jeremy eagerly took the Pokeball out of his pocket and released his Aron. "It was absolutely worth it!" Jeremy said with a grin.

The Pokemon standing in the middle of the kitchen floor let out a little grunt, then after smelling the iron skillet cooking the eggs, his eyes lit up. Aub walked up to the oven and grunted again.

"Isn't he amazing?" Jeremy said.

"This was your gift from Professor Hans? It's adorable!"

Jeremy was so excited his mother liked it. "I'm going to raise him right, mom. The professor said it would be a challenge, and I'm up for it, whatever the cost."

Jeremy's mom turned from the stove and looked at Jeremy, "You know anything about what this Pokemon eats?"

Jeremy looked down. "I suppose that would take some research, maybe some trial and error, I guess."

A loud crunching noise made both Jeremy and his mom look towards the stove, only to find that the iron skillet was missing. Then to the floor next to the stove, where Aub sat, half of the skillet on the floor, bite marks in it. Next to the half skillet were the eggs, left completely alone by Aub. The other half of the skillet was being chewed on.

Jeremy's mom gasped, but Jeremy couldn't help but laugh.

"I think I know what he likes to eat!" Jeremy said.

His mom was not so concerned about Aub's eating habits anymore. "My favorite iron skillet!" she shouted.

Aub quickly downed the other half, leaving the eggs on the floor. He then walked up to Jeremy and sat by his feet.

"Jeremy," said his mom, "do you have any idea how much aluminum costs?"

Jeremy shrugged, "No, why?"

"Because, Jeremy, that's what your adorable little beast is going to be eating from now on, not my prized cooking utensils. And you, Jeremy, will be paying for it."

"But mom, I don't have any income."

"You'll get it. Don't Pokemon trainers give away money as prizes if you beat them in a battle?"

Jeremy nodded, "that's what I've heard, yeah."

"Well then, get your Pokemon ready-"

"Aub, that's what I named him."

"Okay, well get Aub ready, you two are going on a little adventure for some big money."

Jeremy liked the idea, a journey with his new best friend. "Okay, mom. I'll do it."

"Go as soon as possible. There's no gym in this town, but if you go to the Hoenn region nearby, you can find many skilled trainers. Perhaps someone on the road to Hoenn will help you on your way."

"I'll get packing, mom. I'm sure Aub can't wait to get going too!"

"Jeremy, you're a strong young man. I expect great things from you now."

* * *

"Thief! Somebody help! I've been robbed! Help! There he goes, he's getting away!"

The automatic doors to the Pokemart in Petalburg city swung wide to anyone who approached them, even the most unwelcome thieves, collecting other people's goods without permission. This thief reasoned with himself as he left.

"It's only a few Pokeballs, just enough to get me started. Once I beat enough trainers, I'll have enough money to pay the market back for these. No harm, no foul. It's all well-intended."

The thief ran into Petalburg Woods, panting. He found a climbing tree and scaled to the top, dodging the Wurmple and other bug Pokemon in the branches. This thief didn't want bug Pokemon. He wanted something more, something bigger, something powerful. Nothing else would do. The police wouldn't find him up here for quite some time, and by the time they could get their Poochyena on the search, he will have moved on. This was a good place to rest though, so he caught his breath up in the tree.

"I wont need this life much longer. Soon I'll be powerful enough, I'll have all that I need, and people will look up to me. No one should expect any less."

Chapter III: Sweet&Sour Dreams

The thief waited another couple of minutes, made sure no one had tracked him to the woods, then left just before he imagined they'd have the Poochyena out. Petalburg woods wasn't so bad. A few Pokemon popped up, but nothing he couldn't outrun. Trainers along the way eyed him suspiciously, but he just walked on by. It's not like they knew what he was up to, right? They couldn't possibly know he was a thief, that he had Pokeballs, that he was simply set out to make a name for himself. So many trainers before him had. Was not everyone destined for greatness if they simply applied themselves? Could even this thief on the streets be able to rise to the top?

But what would that take? A Pokemon gained from stolen Pokeballs? Will this amount of dishonesty and thievery gain him the things he needed to make it to the top? A few more passing stares from trainers on the road made the thief pick up his pace. His time of self-reflection ended in a wave of self-consciousness. He had to get away from people, he had to get out of this forest, this forest of guilt. Even the trees gave him guilty stares. The Pokemon climbing on the branches glared at him, hissing, accusing him.

But no, they weren't accusing him... they were accusing the thief within him. Who was he really? He was Jonah, son of the southern region of Anadrill, a region unknown to many, but a proud one. His family, a family of nobles, had kicked him out of his home for the stupid things he had done. What had Jonah done? More dishonesty, more lies, more treacherous deeds than stealing Pokeballs. But were these actions all that Jonah was made of? The good in him had perhaps all but faded. Where was the nobility he was born into? Where was the kindness he was shown since birth? Where had he gone wrong? Or was he born evil?

Jonah saw a plain field. He had made it to the end of the forest. With a sigh of relief, he stepped past the last tree in the forest. He should never again set foot in there. Never again.

* * *

Jeremy had packed all that he would need for his long journey through Hoenn. He was slightly familiar with the layout of the region, living so close to it, but he had a map borrowed from the library just in case. He took one last look at the map before putting it in his bag. He stopped by the mart, and with his mother's credit card, purchased ten Pokeballs. Just enough to get him started. After all, though he believed in Aub as his friend, he wasn't sure that his friend could carry him through Hoenn all alone.

Jeremy was more excited than he had ever been. He had heard tales of great trainers in Hoenn. He loved to hear of those who challenged the Elite Four, and the Pokemon League Champions. These were all stories. Maybe, on his journey for income, he would instead shoot for fame! He could reach the top, become the greatest, and no one could stop him and his Aub. They would charge with full force. Unstoppable!

Jeremy halted his train of thought. This was something he should run by his mother, perhaps. After all, a journey to become the greatest Pokemon trainer in Hoenn, let alone in the world, is far different from battling for cash.

Jeremy stepped out of his room and addressed his mom with this new idea. She sighed wearily.

"Jeremy, a quest to challenge the Elite Four is life-consuming. You have to trust your Pokemon greatly, and even trust people at times that may let you down. There will come a time that you fail, and you need to learn what to do after you fail, Jeremy. But look at you, always eager for a challenge, taking it head-on. Perhaps you are more ready than I like to admit. You're growing up faster than I can keep track of. Jeremy, you can go, but I don't have the means to help you. You and your Pokemon are on your own. I sure hope you're ready to handle that."

Jeremy nodded. "You know me, mom. I'll do my best. I'll come back, promise."

Jeremy's mother's eyes began to tear up. "Jeremy, be careful. Trust your instincts, and be aware of your surroundings. You're every bit as much responsible for taking care of Aub as he is for you. Don't you let him go, sweetie. You two have quite a journey ahead of you."

"I understand, mom."

Jeremy and his mother hugged, Jeremy grabbed his bag, and he was headed to a small ferry to take him across the water to a small port just south of Rustboro City.

* * *

Jeremy stepped into the ferry and looked at a white-bearded old man with a youthful twinkle in his eyes. The journey was already looking auspicious for Jeremy. He reached his hand out to the elderly man and introduced himself.

"Hi, my name is Jeremy." he said stepping into the cabin. "Thanks for providing this wonderful ferry service to Hoenn."

The old man grabbed Jeremy's hand with a strong grip, and replied, "Hello, Jeremy, I'm Mr. Briney. Say, you're here a little early. I don't normally start moving for another twenty minutes. But, you're my first passenger of my second trip to this small town today, so I'll give you a prize for that! Jeremy kept smiling. Nice old men, and prizes for being early. This was fantastic.

The old man started shouting, "Peeko! Come meet our first passenger!"

A Wingull flew in through the door Jonah had entered the cabin from.

"This is your prize! You get to see my friend, Peeko!"

Jeremy's smile was slightly dulled by this disappointing "prize," but nonetheless, he remained cheery.

"Well, that's a wonderful Pokemon." Jeremy said. "I have one of my own. He's the one who's inspired me to come to Hoenn."

Mr. Briney smiled. "May I see your Pokemon?"

Jeremy thought of what his dense Pokemon might do to the floor of this ship, then he thought this sturdy ship would be holding even more weight eventually, so he grabbed his Pokeball from his pocket, and placed it on the floor as he called, "Aub, come on out!"

Out from the Pokeball popped his Aron, all full of joy. Mr. Briney smiled and patted the Pokemon on the head. "He looks awfully nice," he said, "but you're going to have to put him away before he eats the ship!"

Jeremy nodded. He would soon have to train Aub not to eat metals that have been put to use like skillets and boat hulls. He took his Pokeball back out and commanded Aub to return. So he did. Time seemed to fly by, and more passengers slowly took up room in the cabin. It hadn't filled much when Mr. Briney announced they were heading for the port on Route 104 in Hoenn, but he wouldn't start until he got his dues from all the passengers.

He skipped right over Jeremy while collecting the dues. Jeremy wondered if he should say that he did not pay, but he let it slide. He had no money anyway. Perhaps he was lucky. The small ferry left the port, and headed for the great Hoenn region. The time on the sea would not be long.

* * *

Jonah, the Pokeball thief, banished noble from Anadrill, entered Rustboro, the largest city in Hoenn. It was an exciting atmosphere. Though the streets were not crowded, there was a present energy that seemed to suggest a lot went on here. It nearly erased Jonah's guilt. Just north of here, perhaps he could catch a strong Pokemon. Perhaps, however, he should rest and clear his conscience. Sleep always helped that didn't it?

He looked around the city. Of course, where could he sleep here? On the streets of this beautiful city? The city deserved better than the peasant that was Jonah. No, he would sleep just south of the gates. A place he more deserved, to be just outside this energetic city. He exited the gates and laid down facing the forest he had exited not too long ago. He turned the other way to avoid looking at it.

"I'll never go back. Not there, not ever."

His thoughts were not pleasant. Could his dreams be?

Chapter IV: Fateful Encounter

Jeremy stood somewhat unsteadily after a half hour on the water. He was just getting his sea legs, and now he was headed back to shore. He looked at Mr. Briney, and addressed him before he got off the boat.

"Mr. Briney, I should have told you sooner. When you were collecting the fees for the trip, you skipped me. I didn't speak up, so I didn't pay for the trip at all. I'm sorry, I have no money right now, but when I decide to come back home, I'll come back with twice the money for both trips."

Mr. Briney chuckled. "Jeremy, don't sweat it. The trip here for free was your prize. Heh, but I had you fooled thinking that all you would get was a view of my lovely Peeko! Make sure to tell everyone you meet about my ferry service, young man!"

Jeremy smiled, his conscience clear. "Thank you, Mr. Briney! I'll make sure everyone knows about your ferry service, count on it!"

Jeremy left the small vessel, head held high. His next trip would be through Petalburg Woods, past which he heard the first gym leader he would face resided. There were some trainers along the way that he could battle to make his Aron strong enough, and maybe even some good Pokemon he could befriend.

Jeremy released Aub from his Pokeball. "You ready, buddy? We're about to have quite an adventure, you and me! Great things are expected of us! Let's make our friends and family proud!"

Aub grunted softly and let Jeremy lead the way.

* * *

"Hello, Jonah. Halfway to madness, are you?"

Jonah's eyes opened, at least he felt them open, but he saw nothing.

"Your inner struggle, your quest for power... you're halfway there."

Another voice, "Wake up, Jonah! LOOK HERE!"

Jonah could see now, and a terrifying image presented itself before him. With a face like a fox's, a bi-pedal creature grinned menacingly.

"I can help you get the rest of the way there, Jonah. Follow my lead. You won't be disappointed in the results. You're half way there."

Jonah couldn't seem to respond, he was petrified.

"Jonah, are you listening? SPEAK!"

Jonah opened his mouth. "Who... who are you?"

"I can be anything you like, and right now, you need a servant, a guide as well. Now I am both, I plan to serve you by guiding you to your source of power. You're already half way there, Jonah."

Jonah shook his head, "But... I don't deserve-"

"STOP! You are, indeed, deserving of this. My services are the least you deserve, Jonah, my dearest. Don't be afraid to accept my offer."

"Where am I?"

"All you need to know now is that you're with me. You're safe, and so are your dreams."

Jonah nodded. "Yes... safe. Thank you, my servant, my guide."

* * *

Jeremy entered the woods with Aub, and with high hopes. This place was slightly eerie, but he didn't let that unnerve him. It was also a peaceful place.

"Okay, Aub, let's go! We're on our way to a lot of victories, and a lot of fun!"

Aub looked up at Jeremy and seemed to smile.

Jeremy set off northward bound, a grin stretching his lips as far as they could go. He looked in the distance and saw another trainer. Perfect! His first Pokemon battle! He ran through the grass to get to him, when suddenly Aub stopped. He was staring down a slightly smaller, worm-like Pokemon! Jeremy thought about catching this Pokemon, but defeating it alone may make Aub considerably stronger.

Jeremy started to command Aub, "Use your claws!" He shouted. Aub stood on his hind legs and used his metal claws to slice the other Pokemon. The enemy Pokemon recoiled, but poised for an attack of its own. With the stinger on its head, it struck Aub, but it didn't seem to affect the Pokemon at all. Aub tackled his opponent to the ground. It lay there without moving.

"We did it!" Jeremy shouted. With Aub now by his side, Jeremy ran towards the trainer. His eyes made contact with the trainer's eyes. "Hello," said Jeremy, "I'm a new trainer, I just arrived here in Hoenn. I've never battled another trainer before, but I'd like to challenge you."

The trainer smiled. "I'm new to Pokemon battles too! I'd love a challenge!"

The opposing trainer lifted a Pokeball and sent out his Pokemon. It was one quite similar to the one Aub had just tackled. After the results of that battle, Jeremy was sure he had the upper hand in this one.

"Ready, Aub? Go for it!"

The other trainer shouted a command, "Use poison sting, Wurmy!"

"Use your metal claws!" Shouted Jeremy. The trainers Wurmy's attack again didn't affect Aub in the slightest. Was Jeremy's Pokemon invincible? His Aron again sliced his opponent with his metal claws.

"Use your string shot!" Shouted the other trainer.

A thin string wrapped around Aub's legs, then the opponent's Wurmy pulled the string tight, keeping Aub from moving. The foe's Pokemon charged Aub with a full-force tackle, causing Aub to recoil a little. Was Aub in danger of losing? No!

Jeremy shouted again, "Use your metal claws!" With one more strike, the opponent's Pokemon fell over, fainted. "Yeah! We did it again!"

The opposing trainer bowed in defeat. "Your Pokemon is quite strong. I guess I owe you something for winning." He handed Jeremy 60 Pokedollars, which he accepted graciously.

"Well," said Jeremy, "that was a great battle! I was even worried I would lose when my Pokemon slowed down so much. What kind of Pokemon is that? I've seen it twice now."

"Oh, he's my Wurmple! I love him so much!"

Jeremy smiled and nodded. "Well, thanks so much for the battle. What's the quickest way to Rustboro? It's where I'd like to officially start operating for my journey, kind of like my go-to place when I'm not sure what to do."

"Just follow the path north. It's a simple route, really."

"Thanks so much. Good luck on your journey."

"Same to you."

* * *

Jonah kept looking around, the only thought is his head, "It's safe, I'm safe... my servant, my guide." He had lost track of his so-called servant. Where had everything in his dream gone? Where was he? Where was his dream? Was it still safe?
Jonah...
It's time to wake up.
Hello?
"Hey!, you okay? What are you doing sleeping outside the city? Hello?"

Jonah jolted up, but relaxed seeing a human face in front of him. Should he relax, or was this a worker from the Petalburg mart? Nevertheless, he was relaxed to see this face. It seemed inviting.

"You should stand up, you can't be comfortable sleeping like this. Besides, it's rather late in the day to still be asleep. What's your name?"

Jonah hesitated. No one here knew his name anyway, no harm in using his real name. "My name is Jonah. And yours?"

"I'm Jeremy. Are you a trainer?"

Jonah shook his head. "I hope to be someday."

"Well, maybe I can give the next Pokemon I catch to you, we'll be good trainers and travel together, and challenge each other to make our Pokemon stronger."

Jonah suddenly liked that idea. A partnership... a friend? At long last, a friend. "Yeah, okay Jeremy. Is that your Pokemon behind you?"

"Yeah! This is my Aron, Aub."

Aub cautiously approached Jonah, then smiled. Jonah knelt beside the Pokemon.

"Hello, Aub, nice to meet you." Jonah rose. "Thanks for waking me, Jeremy. Where are you headed next?"

Wow...that's an interesting way of making them meet. I really enjoyed this chapter, especially since it was his first battle. Keep up the great work!

Hm? Okay, I did read the rules. My last entry was 3:00 AM, so I'm still in the clear as far as that goes. Thanks everyone for your feedback!

Chapter V: A Good Deed

The sun was bright as Jeremy and Jonah walked through the city of Rustboro together. Jonah looked at Jeremy, almost in a dreamy state with his Aron. He was so... cheery. But there was something more to this new companion. He seemed strong, quite strong indeed. His strong personality at least ran circles around the bleak atmosphere that Jonah gave off. Jonah was quite excited yesterday, but after that guilt, then that dream. It seems that he changed over night. Jeremy broke the silence.

"Hey, Jonah, this is where the Devon Corporation is. I hear they have some useful technology for trainers. Ever hear of the Poketch?"

Jonah shrugged. "No, it must be new."

"Hardly, but they keep updating it, so it's never obsolete."

"Sounds like a good investment then."

"Yeah, but it's probably more expensive than the little 60 Pokebucks I got. Don't suppose you have any money on you?"

Jonah paused. "No, no money. But I do have some Pokeballs. We could sell them maybe for enough money to buy a Poketech."

"That's not a bad idea. If you need Pokeballs for other Pokemon, you can use mine. I have ten total, and we'll get more when we have the money."

"Let's go to the mart, we'll trade in my Pokeballs."

For the seven Pokeballs Jonah had, they got 700 Pokedollars. Not a whole lot, but hopefully at least enough for one Poketch watch. They made their way to the Devon Corporation and looked at the large doors. The building was quite a spectacle, perhaps the greatest building in the city. As they entered, the air conditioning sent a blast of cool relief on their faces. Neither of them had realized how hot it was outside until they experienced this perfectly cool breeze. Jeremy smiled, as he often did, and Jonah even let a smirk creep onto his face. It felt good, the comfortable luxuries of the city.

Jeremy ran to where he saw the Poketch watches on display. "Here they are! They're beautiful!"

Jonah took a look around. Odd that there was no one else around on this floor. What, no salesmen to discuss the price of the various technologies here? No one? This was a strange sight. A call echoed from the stories above. At least someone was in the building. Jonah took some comfort in knowing that. Perhaps he was just paranoid. Odd though that someone would be calling out so loudly in a place of business such as this. The sounds were unclear.

Jeremy turned his head away from the watches and looked at Jonah. "Do you hear that? It almost sounds like someone is in trouble."

Jonah paid even more attention to the calls. Was someone really calling out in distress? His first instinct was to run. This situation had trouble written all over it. Jeremy's presence may have been the thing that prevented that. Or maybe he just had to force himself to man up and stop being such a coward. "Let's go upstairs, Jeremy. We may be the only ones who can help whoever's up there. Hopefully that's not the case, hopefully nothing is wrong and we just misunderstood the calls."

Jeremy nodded, "Let's go."

The pair bolted up the stairs after Jeremy put Aub in his Pokeball. This was a tense situation. Anything could await them up here.

They reached the second floor... every bit as vacant as the first. The call sounded again. It was another floor up. They ran up the next flight of stairs. They found the source of the calling. Someone was tied to a chair in the middle of the third floor lobby. Jeremy ran over to help him.

"No!" the man shouted, "It's not safe, leave here!"

Jeremy remained calm. "Don't worry, my Pokemon can cut these ropes with his claws. Go, Aub!" Aub popped out of his Pokeball, ready to take orders from Jeremy. Jeremy leaned over to him and said, "You need to help this man, cut him loose from the chair." Aub nodded and began to work.

Jonah watched for anyone else. He looked up at the ceiling. What on earth was--
A bluish form detached itself from the ceiling and aimed straight for Jeremy. Jonah was too far away to help, or possibly just too paralyzed in fear. The blue form covered Jeremy with its wings and hissed. Aub stepped away from the ropes and lunged at the form. It detached itself from Jeremy and landed on the ground with a thud. It was a Pokemon. It screeched as it bared its vicious fangs. Aub leaped again and with all the force it could muster, sent the Pokemon to the ground, again a thud resounded through the room. The Pokemon stayed down.

A voice came from the stairs to the fourth floor, "Golbat, that wasn't good enough!" The Pokemon was zapped as a bolt of energy all the way to a female trainer that was just emerging from the stairs. She was clad in a red, hooded outfit with two protruding attachments that looked like ears. A design on the chest of the uniform looked like a small mountain range in the shape of an "M."

Jeremy still lay on the ground, his Aub staying close by, protecting him. Jonah knew what he had to do. He had to try to command Jeremy's Pokemon, This trainer undoubtedly had more Pokemon, and Jonah was going to fight his first battle with a Pokemon that was not his own. Jonah looked Aub in the eyes. Aub could tell that Jonah was nervous.

"Aub," said Jonah, "Jeremy and I need you to listen. You need to use your claws and that thick body of yours to combat whatever this trainer has. We're counting on you."

Aub's eyes seemed to glow with excitement and worry both. He stepped away from Jeremy and poised himself to battle whatever this trainer sent out.

"Go, Mightyena!" Shouted the trainer. Out came a vile-looking dog-like Pokemon, with black skin and vicious teeth, already bared to strike. Aron even seemed intimidated by this beast, but its daunting presence was not more powerful than Aubs need to protect his trainer. Aub moved first, taking his challenger head-on. Another full-force blow from Aub sent this opponent of his reeling backwards. The Mightyena recovered, then sent out a dark wave from the ground, pulsing once. Aron was hardly affected, but Jonah saw something more in there. He covered his eyes as thoughts filled his mind.

Worthless, thieving scum! You've betrayed so many. You can't help anyone now. Not without me. I am your servant, your guide. You're sa-

The trance suddenly ended. Someone was speaking to him.

"You little runt, I'm all out of Pokemon! But this Pokemon did all the work for you. You didn't command it at all. He'd be better off without you somewhere in the wild! Scum, you are, I ought to take care of you myself, but I can't compete with your Pokemon. This place has so much we can use to our advantage. I wish you hadn't got in the way, boy. Anyway, tend to your friend. He may be poisoned."

A Pokemon poisoning a person? Did that happen often? As the strangely dressed villain left, Jonah ran up to Jeremy. He was hurting bad, the veins in his neck were purple. The man tied to the chair spoke.

"He may not last much longer. Golbat's Poison Fang is a powerful move. You need to get him some help."

Aub finished freeing the man from his chair, Jonah picked up Jeremy, and the man started off towards the stairs back down to the lower floors.

"Come with me, young man, we may be able to save him."

Aub and Jonah followed as the man led them out of Devon Corporation building, and a little ways through the town until they reached a small house. The man opened the door without knocking.

"Elyssa, someone needs help! We have a Golbat poisoning! Ready the bed, and get some water!"

A teenage girl came from a room down the hallway and ran into another room. She came out of the room and headed to the kitchen, then came out of the kitchen with some water. "The bed is ready," she said, "and I have the water. How long does he have?"

"I'm not sure, but some rest will do him good. He has a chance, I'm sure. Young man, what's your name?" He was talking to Jonah as he picked up Jeremy from Jonah and brought him into the bedroom

"I'm Jonah," he responded, following the man into the room, "I'm new to these parts. I just met this person here. We were going to travel together. He was going to share his Pokemon with me." Jonah was obviously shaken up.

"Jonah, you were brave back there." He put Jeremy down on the bed and put the covers over him as he spoke, "You instilled a will to fight in this small Pokemon by telling him the critical conditions of the situation. My name is Devon, I own Devon Corporation. The woman you battled was a Team Magma grunt. They've been after various goods and Pokemon. I'm in debt to you for driving them out. I owe you something in return. You said this young one was going to share his Pokemon with you. Do you not have any of your own?"

Jonah sighed, "No, I don't."

Devon reached into his back pocket. "Young man, take this. I got it from the Sliph Company in Kanto. It will catch you any Pokemon that you like. These are rare, and not sold in Pokemon Marts. Choose wisely which Pokemon you want. This can only be used once."

Devon handed a different-looking Pokeball to Jonah.

"It's called the Master Ball."

Jonah stared at it as he held it in his hand. Any Pokemon he wanted, any one he could find. Fantastic!

A weak voice started to speak, "Jonah, are you there?"

Jonah looked to the bed where Jeremy lay. "I'm right here, yeah."

Jeremy coughed. "I can't make it. I'm not sure what happened. Look, I told my mom I would come back home. Please, if I can't make it there on my own power... if I pass on... send me home. I can't break my promise to her... they all expected so much of me."

Jonah's heart broke at the thought of losing his first friend. "Jeremy, wait, it's not your fault. You couldn't help this. Please hang on, we're friends, remember? We're gonna travel Hoenn together. You can't leave."

"So you expected a lot from me too then." Even now, Jeremy managed to smile. "I won't die forever. Not if you take my expectations with you. You can finish our quest for the both of us."

Jonah held back tears. This was not a time to show weakness. There was never a time to show weakness. Devon left the room to give the two a moment, however short it may be.

* * *

Jonah left the room, face red, Aub following close behind him. Devon stared, not sure what to say.

"It's not over," Jonah said, "Not even close to over. Those Magma folk, they've got something coming. Jeremy won't be gone, not as long as I'm here. I'll finish our journey. I'll become more powerful, the world will see. Team Magma will see, the universe will see! This is my legacy, MY story. And I'll make things right."

Jonah turned and left the house, Devon was speechless.

End of Chapter V

Re: The tales of Jonah: Quest for Power (Chapter V now up)

Bonus to anyone who can guess what moves were used in the battle in Chapter V.

I don't know what the bonus is, but... I'll say "bonus to (x person)" and you may feel better about yourself.

Re: The tales of Jonah: Quest for Power (Chapter V now up)

Poison Fang, Iron Head, and Dark Pulse.
Also, great job!!! I really liked your description of the battle and how Aub was feeling.
However, the way the Team Magma Grunt spoke was...odd. Why would she be concerned for Jeremy. Either way, great job!
Oh, and it's Pokétch, not Pokétech.
