I saw It there. What It was, I do not know. What I do know is that It was big, bulky, and kind of slimy. What this Thing did, though, was something else altogether. When It walked, It stomped. When It stomped, It jiggled. When It jiggled, a little bit of slime splattered onto the ground. It didn’t seem all that friendly; It always bumped into things and knocked them over if they were in the way. I kept my distance as I silently observed Its parade around the forest.

I saw It walking. Where It was walking, I do not know. I followed It along the beaten path as It continued to stomp along and trample the lush spring foliage. It continued walking for about an hour, when It stopped without warning. It proceeded to look left, then right, then left again. In fear that It would see me, I hid behind a tree. After a few minutes, I heard the sound of It stomping along again. Assuming it was safe, I went back to my stalking.

It eventually ceased to walk. Instead, it ran. What It was running from or why It was running was beyond me. Since my curiosity had become so invested in this Thing I just had to run in pursuit. Its speed gradually increased. As such, I had to increase my speed as well. As disgusting slime splattered into my face, we both continued to gain speed. Eventually, I had to slow down. The odd thing is, though, as I slowed down, so did the Thing. Testing my newly formulated theory, I slowed down to a stop. To my utter surprise, so did the Thing!

Suddenly, It didn’t seem so scary. Yes, It was big, but so are trees. Trees don’t hurt people, so why should the Thing? I slowly tiptoed across the beaten-down dirt to make an attempt at communicating with It. I only got within twenty feet of it when I heard it grunt. It was a loud grunt, one which sends vibrations through your very bones. I stepped back, and was hoping that I was out of Its sight. Okay, so maybe It isn’t friendly.

Hours went by. Or was it minutes? Seconds? Time seemed to be at a standstill as I stood against an extra-large tree. Suddenly, I heard it grunt again. This time, it spoke in broken English. “Why you follow me?” It said in an almost childlike voice. It was at this moment that I realized that this Thing was no monster; It was a person! It was a gigantic, slimy, smelly person, but a person nonetheless! Yes, It was scary. Yes, It bumped into things as It walked, but wouldn’t I if I had been so big that I had a hard time fitting through the door? I suddenly felt a deep compassion for this Thing.

“Oh. I umm, you see, I was walking and found you here, and umm, y’know, maybe we could be friends?” I stuttered. The Thing just stared. For what again felt like hours, I stood there, with no idea what to say. Those two eyes, they were staring at me so hard I felt like it was looking right into the deep fabric of my soul at that very moment. In this very moment, I felt like I needed to love something, to feel such deep compassion that it creates a bond that can never be shattered, no matter the situation or trial. I quickly decided that this creature, this Thing, was what I would dedicate my entire life to loving and caring for.

It continued to stare. After a minute, It charged at me. Well, here it all ends. It’s going to plow me over and crush me against a tree. No. It wrapped Its large, muscular arms around my body and squeezed in such a strong embrace I thought my eyeballs would pop out. “Yes! Yes! Love is good! Love is good!” was all It said as it kept me in its big, slimy bear hug. Quick note to self: give this Thing a bath when you get home.
