This is sort of a SciTech thing, but I think it goes here.

What's the policy on free download websites such as Brothersoft?

Are the cops going to come busting through my door? Lol, I'm such a noob in real life too.

While it's technically illegal, the police have better things to do with their time. Like arresting real criminals. No one ever gets prosecuted for downloading stuff.

The worst thing that will happen to you is that your computer will get a crippling virus (which btw is very possible so be careful what you download)

Norton's been running full system scans every day. =)

Which edition of Norton? I bought the 2009 version just this year.

All versions of Norton. Norton is also very resource-hungry which will slow your computer down (you may not notice it but if you got another Anti-Virus you would have a faster computer).

Try using AVG Free Edition or something. They always come up with something that Norton might've missed.

Norton came pre-installed on my laptop and I gave it a shot but it made my laptop hella slow and never found nothing. AVG is alright but it also lacks. Avast so far is the best one I've had.

It is illegal, but the cops can't just come and arrest you out of the blue. You have to get sued by the company that owns the stuff you are downloading for copyright infringement. You should be safe as long as you're just downloading and not letting other people download from you.

Oh btw the cops don't get involved for you illegally downloading content off the internet. If you do you're breaking the federal law, meaning the feds will show up at your door..you're pretty much fucked if you get caught is what I'm saying.

Dude, don't tell me I'm leading a life of sin here. I wanted answers on this.

I downloaded an old version of Microsoft Photo Editor, because stupid HP didn't have it pre-installed.

So the FBI is coming for me?

You're saying the feds are after ME, as opposed to the owner of the website with hundreds of free downloads? I fail to see any logic in that at all.

No dude you didn't understand. There are millions upon millions of people downloading and sharing things illegally all over the world as we speak. I've downloaded over 3,000 songs, 5 photoshops, and etc and haven't been caught. The only way I think you can be caught is if you exceed your ISP's bandwith, if you ISP reports you OR you are downloading off a bad server and the FBI is tracking it. This is what I know but there can be other ways. Don't worry about downloading some photo editor, most sites should have that thing as a free download anyways. If you're in need of things check out filehippo or warez-bb (i'm not going to give you full url links as i dont want to be banned so figure it out yourself). Also there are a lot of ways to bypass the whole illegal thing if you're smart enough and sometimes it comes down to luck really.

Basically you shouldn't worry about downloading some crappy microsoft image editor, just watch out from where you download and what you download. Sometimes downloading something with a virus can be worse then getting caught.

This is just my experience and I could be wrong about some things but don't worry~

Edit:

The feds aren't after you, but if you're caught breaking the federal law they will be. Why would they be after you if you are breaking the law by downloading software illegally? Because you were the one being caught, surely they will go after the site and it's owner but if you're caught you will still pay for your crime.

Many sites like ThePirateBay have already been busted a few times by officials, but they're still up and running smooth as ever.

Move to Canada! ^_^
We download what we want here!
And for viruses, lol... I have a Mac!

Oh Canada... Where the gigabytes flow free and the Windows 98s are cast into the fire...

I can't believe their going to try to make that site legal, I think it will fail horribly.

Meh, if I was charged $100 for every single thing I've illegally downloaded.

I'd probably owe like $10000.

Most of which would go to Nintendo and Game Freak.

Ah, fuck it. Charge me!

Heheheh ... I've downloaded so little it's not worth it to come after me. :p

Downloading the content isn't their biggest concern, it's the file sharing.

Free downloads is one thing, torrents is another. Those places are filled with viruses.

But you know, you don't have to be worried. No one is gonna come to your door and tell you to stop downloading. They might shut down the site, but they won't do anything to you. I mean look at all the ROM sites. Those are completely illegal, and yet. Millions of people are still downloading from them.

Yeah, so in brief, your completely fine.
