I had this idea today, did it on paper during me lunch break. I've no idea of how well it might work or if it has a gaaaping weakness, nor does my current game actually have all the pokémon in question, but just for a general 'gaming team with a theme' how well might this idea work?

Empoleon (Water/Steel)
Gastrodon (Water/Ground)
Dewgong (Water/Ice)
Gyarados (Water/Flying)
Lombre (Water/Grass)
Lanturn (Water/Electric)
with a Wailord (Water) as a 'sideboard', for those of you who know Magic terminology.

Nice Idea, but I am not 100% sure on makin good teams, but:

I'd remove one and add kingdra... part dragon that won't be KO'd by an ice attack. I like wailord myself, if it has a high enough speed, lot of HP, it can do quite a bit of damamge with water spout if used right. For water/ice, maybe replace dewgong with lapras.

I have most of the pokemon there, minus lanturn and if your Emploeon has substatute, grass knot and holding leftovers, with right stats it can be quite good. Mine knows: Substatute, Blizzard, Grass Knot and Surf and if it can't get substatute first, the only real problem I have is with infernape using close combat. I based it off a smogon one with ice beam, but I replaced it with blizzard as its more powerful and it hits more often than not.

Natures and movesets would really help people who are trying to rate this -- what moves are these pokemon going to have? What roles will they serve? Here's what I'm noticing right off the bat:
-- Gyarados = physical sweeper
-- Gastrodon, Empoleon, Ludicolo (if you plan on evolving, which I highly recommend) Wailord (if you plan on using it), and Lanturn all function as pretty bulky. Dewgong can as well, with Hydration, something setting up Rain Dance, and Rest. I'd really suggest using Empoleon as a bulky special sweeper.
-- You've got a pretty good coverage of types balancing out the weakness to Grass, but the Electric weakness that Empoleon, Dewgong, and especially Gyarados have is definitely going to be an issue you'll want to address.

I've put in some pure Water-types in case you're okay with straying from the original format of your team.

This kind of single-type team is actually quite doable seeing as there is such a wide variety of Water-types out there. They also only have two weaknesses (Electric and Grass) so it's easy to cover them. Now, is this team for OU or UU? If it's for UU, you're pretty safe... just need to make a few changes. Empoleon and Gyarados have to go in that case. Feraligatr can do a good job of replacing Gyarados, but Empoleon's a bit harder... Slowbro or Slowking could be fun. Milotic is a good choice for some bulk. Mantine or Pelipper can at least replace Gyarados as far as typing goes; the choice depends on whether you want SpD or Def, respectively. Blastoise is available for a reliable Rapid Spinner. Dewgong's good, but it works better with Rain support. If you're not using Rain, you can use Cloyster for a good physical tank and Rapid Spinner. If you're going OU, you'll have to make more changes. Gastrodon obviously would switch to Swampert. Seeing as Swampert and Empoleon will cover your two weaknesses, you can have a little wiggle room with the rest. Gyarados is a good choice; even though it has a 4x Electric weakness, it is neutral to Grass and is a solid choice. Kingdra has seen increasing popularity, but that's for physical sets; a special set would add an element of surprise. Tentacruel is available for Rapid Spin. Starmie's a good special sweeper. Vaporeon's available for some good bulk and is a very solid Pokémon. It can even provide the team with Wish support.

Gyarados, Swampert, Empoleon, Tentacruel, Vaporeon, and Kingdra/Starmie would be great for OU. Gastrodon, Ludicolo, Feraligatr, Slowbro, Dewgong (with Rain; if not, use something else, like Pelipper or Mantine), and Blastoise/Cloyster (I suggest that you only use this if you aren't using Dewgong) would be pretty good for UU.

I would use kingdra instead of dewgong , heres the moveset my kingdra has
Kingdra@damp rock
modest
swift swim
252hp/252SpAtk/6def

surf
ice beam
dragon pulse
rain dance

this is obviously for setting up rain and for me has swept entire teams in the rain.

Heh, water is the only mono-type team I do because of this... and well, water Pokemon are my favorite. Wiil has a lot of great suggestions, and I do HIGHLY recommend using rain on an all-water team. I know this is a "team with a theme" as you said but you may want to consider an Electivire. A lot of times I end up putting him on my "all water" team anyway (and come to think of it, I should specialize him a bit more for that use). And if you use rain, you can also run a Lonely nature with Thunder on the set. Of course, you can still switch Swampert in when you predict a likely thunderbolt. I like to choice band mine too to help get rid of any nuisances, and rain support once again makes the job even easier, if you think you can get away with Waterfall.

Wiil has pretty much said anything useful that I could say, but I hope it helps.

I've no idea what I'd ever use this team for, it is literally all up in the air. I don't even have all the pokémon in question. I was just wondering whether such a team would be feasible to perform, and I'm happy to find out it is with some modification so I will keep it in mind!!

You should put a Kingdra in there.
It sounds pretty rockin' though.
