WARNING: EPILEPTIC TREES!!!
Ash isn't based upon Red Version's Protagonist, but Blue's Protagonist. It's something I thought about while being taken on a trip and doodling how I'd do the animé in recent times, where I recalled Pokémon Special Emerald Chapter. In it, Ruby and Sapphire were variations of their clothing, Ruby in Red and Sapphire in Blue, which then made me think if the Animé did something similar. Blue was the most recently released game when the Animé came out, so perhaps to have a more recognized colour of the series at that point, they picked a Blue scheme instead of a Red one.
Further along the life of the animé, another trainer was introduced, one who also resembles the Gen 1 Protagonist but utilizes a Green colour scheme, which suggests that the colours may show which game colour they maybe based off. Evidence includes the hat. Ash's hat resembles the Blue Protagonist's hat in the sprite, more so then the Green Variation, where the circle, possibly a badge of some form, is more prominant, something Ash's lacks but Ritchie's has.
Not to be taken seriously:
This seems allows Ash to remain in the series instead of being written out, as Blue is repeated in later generations bar 5 at the present point: Gen 1=Blue, Gen 2=Crystal, Gen 3=Sapphire and Gen 4=Diamond. If the trend of a Blue in the game trilogys continue, then perhaps Gen 5 will be Midnight (Blue).
This theory leads to an interesting fact: If Ritchie represents Green and Ash represents Blue, then where is the variation that represent Red?
