(Is this in the right place??)

I'll steal the Quote from The guiness book of world records.

'In July 2008, biologists from the Osaka Bioscience Instistute in Suita, Osaka Prefecture, Japan, identified a protein that is nescessary to effectively transmit visual information to the brain. Having determined that the protein is used in kinetic vision (being able to detect fast-moving objects) they named it Pikachurin (PEE-kah-YU-rin) after Pikachu, a Pokemon creature that is also known for high speeds.

Discuss. I think it's epic.

That's cool. These Japanese people are too addicted to Pokemon. Why didn't they name this protein Deoxurin?

lol, its a bit late but i just found it out and thought to post it, as I couldn't see it anywhere else here.

OMG. This is too epic to be true. Which other video game had its name being used for a Protein!

There is a signaling protein called sonic hedgehog. Its pathway can be inhibited by Robotnikinin.

I am not making this up.

I demand links, Sleet. D:

And if they wanted to named a fast protein after a fast Pokemon, why not someone like Electrode? Marumainmin has a nice ring to it... Deoxurin is also good. Or even Bunyamin, after Purugly? While we're at it, why not "Tekkanin", as both a protein AND after Ninjask?

That darn Pikachu is too popular for it's own good. >>

It's kinda obvious that if they wanted to name a protien or whatever after a certain pop icon, they'll go for the most well-known one. It would be pointless to name it after an obscure character.

Yeah. This is the first protein to be named after a video character, might I add, so yeah. Is there really a sonic the hedgehog one? How about Marioitus, a disease that makes you want to eat nothing but mushrooms, or Princesspeachine, a protein that makes your emotions super powerful!

Yeah, they obviously chose Pikachu because he's Iconic. If I said 'Darkrai' to a person who wasn't into pokemon, they'd have no clue. if I said Pikachu however...they would know.

PEE-kah-YU-rin

Mouse pee. ;o

edit: FR, I'm jk. :p

This shows scientists can have a little fun when it comes to naming just about anything. In fact, I wouldn't mind seeing them name a protein Kirbykin or Linkin (maybe that one should be Zeldakin, so people know the reference.)

Sleet already said it, but here's a link.

Actually, I believe the real reason they called it Pikachurin is because of the electrical impulses it sends to your brain.
