Ok, so my friend stumbled upon this nugget of happy today:

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2457332

I can't believe this exists. I mean, it has an ISBN number and everything! Maybe I found it extra funny because I worked in the kid's department of Barnes and Noble for a few years and man there are a lot of interesting books out there, let me tell you, but this was published in 1991! What the hell :O

During the ninties, drugs were the focus of a huge, largely overblown moral panic. Ever heard of "Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue"?

That's one thing about my childhood I didn't want to remember.

Oh you don't, do you? :-D

As far as the insane horse book. Did anyone else just about lose it at the bottom of page 9? Also, on page 22, is Father horse showing Latawnya the body? WTF???
Great find!

ADDENDUM: Sold out? Darn the luck. DARN! (The reviews are made of gold though.)

Of course the "friend who ODd" story only comes out *after* the kid does drugs. The parents never tell the kids as a precautionary tale, only after the event, which leads me to belive that said friend never existed.

And how exactly does a horse get a light or open a bottle?

The horses are talking and you're asking about THAT?

Also, reading the author's bio and realizing the mother horse's name is the same as the author's, I'm convinced that this is a very bad way of the author saying "My daughter is a druggie and I DO NOT APPROVE D:<"

Eh. I vaguely remember going to a DARE program in the school cafeteria (which doubled as an audotorium) when I was around 7. I didn't mind because it got me out of doing schoolwork and all I had to do was look at the stage and listen to the lame jokes. I remember that at one point, they said that dragons became extinct because they smoked so much. No, I didn't have that high of an attention span at all. However, they also mentioned a convention of some kind that gave away wallets that contained various sums of money. They also demonstrated that they were going to have a one of those things that resembles a closed-in phone booth where money blew all over the place. The catch was that although the party/convention was free the activities weren't.

That's about all I remember.

Dear God, help us all. That is the single most STUPID thing I've ever heard!!! And people wonder why their kids grow up emo?!?! O_O;

Well I didn't exactly turn out emo but I snapped slightly not long after that entire thing. Fortunately, I got better after a year. Sadly I still don't take what older adults say without at least somewhat of a grain of salt though... :dodgy:

we werent talking about YOU being emo...

have you checked that bookstore that sells "abused/used/previously unloved" books? you know, the one that sells a copy of "Snow White" with pages missing and the pictures and half the words covered in purple crayon for $100? imagine what they charge for a book of the same stature of lataywana!

I KNOW they weren't talking about me... I was just saying that while it didn't make me become emo, which MangaBottle theorized might have happened in some cases, that load of crap almost ruined my childhood, but at the same time gave me the skepticism that I needed for this world.

As for that bookstore that you say sells beat up books for insane prices...I'm gonna need some proof.
