I noticed no one created a thread to discuss the State of the Union Address. So here it goes.

It wasn't all that moving (though Bush couldn't move me with a steam shovel). It actually proved Bush has decided the rest of America is of little consquence. All he was doing was pandering to his base. There was no attempt to reach out to the moderates or Democrats. Though, he got what he wanted out of us.

Cindy Sheehan was arrested for wearing a T-shirt with the number of American soldiers have died in Iraq. The authorities said she was arrested because she was thinking of causing a disturbance. That's right people, a person was arrested for a thought crime. The only thing Orewell got wrong was the date people. The charges were dropped btw.

Onto the actual address. We have found the answer to our fuel problem. It's switch grass, not be confused with saw grass. I was thinking hybrid cars but I guess I was wrong.

On the subject of hybrids, the strangest line in the whole speech came towards the end. Bush said he'd ban the creation of human/animal hybrids. Where did he came up with that one? I mean, is there a secret lab making shark people we should know about? Whatever, this is Bush we're talking about.

My favorite part of the address was Bush complaining about how Congress failed to act on his social security reform. The Democrats errupted into applause and cheers. It was awe inspiring for Democrats to actually celebrate the fact they are obstructionists and that obsructionism is a good thing.

Anyway, discuss.

Maybe he was watching that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-esque show that really had shark-people.
Poor guy... I guess someone changed the channel while he was watching the news or something and thought that was real.

Mrs. Young was only escorted out of the building. Sheehan was actually arrested and was charged for creating a disturbance which would have put her in jail for up to a year. However, the outcry over this forced them to drop the charges. Sheehan also said she would have changed her shirt or covered it if so asked.

EDIT: It has amazed many that Bush said very little about what would happen during his administration. Most of his speech was about things long after 2008.

On further check - it appears both expulsings were misinterpretation of the law (neither should have been expelled).

As for why one got arrested, and the other, not :

-According to the police, Sheehan *refused* to remove/cover her shirt, and did not go quietly. She claims otherwise, of course. Mrs Young, OTOH, allowed herself to be led out of the room, where she then protested.

-Sheehan was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor (protesting without a permit) last september. Has she been cleared of those charges since then? If not, the fact that she's still facing charges may have played a role. If she was condemned, her being a repeat offender (from the agent's original perspective) may also pose a problem.

Both of these are FAR more likely than the notion that Bush had ordered the police to stiffle enemy thought.

Given that protests generally involves blocking streets, etc, it's only reasonable that cities would want to regulate when or where protests take place. Has to do with protecting the rights of the OTHER citizens to live their life even if someone wants to cry foul about Iraq.

And, as with anything else that governments (federal, state, city, whatever) do, disregarding rules tends to get you arrested and charged.

There's nothing unreasonable in there.

You're too late on the thought crime bit. We already have thought crimes, or at least as you describe them. It's called "conspiracy to commit a crime", and it's been around for a while.

You seem to forget what he said about alternative fuels, and ending our dependence on the Middle East. That's Democratic rhetoric through and through. Granted, he's been saying the EXACT SAME THING about it for the past 2 years (maybe longer), but he HAS been saying it.

That's right people, a person was arrested for a thought crime.

It wasn't a thought crime. It was a shirt crime.

They're bear-people. Bear-people. They began during the Cold War (they're perfect for kicking Commie ass).

And I'm STILL pissed at him for saying cloning was a bad thing. Evil twins, THAT'S a bad thing. Clones are all good.

Bush is anti-furry? Who knew he even was aware of them?
