Is there a way for us to turn this 'feature' off? Please? It causes more problems than it's worth.
There've been many times I've wanted to amend a post shortly after submitting it. No big deal, the forum displays the inline editor box on that post. Except that the editor suddenly disappears halfway through my edit -- so I have to click the "edit" button again, this time taking me to the full editor on a separate page (again no big deal, aside from having to repeat the whole edit in question).
There've also been many times where I hit the Quote button on a post and it brings up the Quick Reply form, then when I hit submit, I get a standard browser prompt asking whether I want to leave the page with unsaved form changes. One, this prompt shouldn't even be happening. Two, if I hit 'yes' this results in a double post. Apparently the post was already submitted but ...something... happened while the page was waiting for a server response. If I want to avoid double posting in this case, I have to manually reload the page (which involves another browser prompt) and manually check whether my post was actually processed. Oh, and I have to copy the text I was posting before I reload because when I do reload the thread, the Quick Reply form is blanked out.
I believe both of these are caused by the "thread automatically updated every 30 seconds" timer. Either one of these cases always happen between 10 and 20 seconds after starting one of the above actions on a freshly viewed thread; neither of them occur if the thread in question has been opened for some time (about 3-5 minutes, or enough for the forum to declare it "idle" and stop auto-refreshing).
And, in my experience, when I view forum threads 99% of the time there are no new posts arriving within the next 30 seconds. Maybe I'm just not on very active portions of the forum, but either way, vast majority of the time this feature doesn't even DO anything at all. It just messes up attempts to edit or quick-reply to posts.
