TINA's Nuzlocke Series

Fuchsia City seems to have fallen on hard times. The world-famous zoo is no more, and the Safari Zone has also closed its doors. So i just fish up Water Onix the Gyarados in the warden's pond and head straight to the gym. This is a poison gym, so no one will have to sit this one out. The puzzle here revolves around those same invisible walls we know and love, but the gym trainers have also all dressed up as Janine to make it hard to find the real gym leader. I do eventually manage to find her, so i challenge her to a fight. She leads with Crobat and i lead with Pip. A single Thunderpunch takes out the bat, and next is Weezing so i switch to Johan and kill it with Confusion. Then comes Ariados, and i give this job to Babatte. Two wing attacks kill the spider as he just scary-faces me, and for the weezing that comes out thereafter, i send Johan back in and kill it with confusion. Last is Venomoth, which is a job for Meppel. Janine opts to use a Dire Hit on the guy, but whatever that does, it doesn't stop Fly from getting the OHKO.

With that badge in hand, it's time to explore further. The route to Cinnabar is blocked by rubble from a recent eruption, so i set my course due west. I catch a Grimer there and name it Blubber, then i head on to the cycling road. I really prefer to walk, but if the law here mandates i hop on my bike, i guess i'll do that. As i'm cycling up the path and beating up all the trainers here, Underminer finally evolves into Dugtrio. I also catch a Fearow here; must be nice being able to fly over this route and not have to sit on a bike. Anyway, the guy will be named Gabon. On the northern end, i can finally get off this bike again, so i catch a wild Grimer out of sheer joy. This one shall bear the name Slimy.

When i finally arrive in Celadon, i decide to go for a swim in the pond, but it turns out it's infested with Grimer. I catch one and name it Viezerik, but i think it's wisdom to stay out of the water here. Instead, i head to this city's main tourist attraction: the department store. I buy a bunch of potions and souvenirs and stuff, but i can't spend all day shopping. I'm not that kind of girl. Of course, i'm not gonna visit the city's other main attraction: the game corner. No way i'm gambling my life savings away. So i head to the one place left that's worth visiting: the gym. This is a grass gym, but i decide to just take everyone anyway. There's no puzzle here, so i just beat up the trainers and head straight for Erika. She leads with her Tangela and i lead with Babatte. My wing attacks don't do a whole lot, but i 4x resist her moves so even though i'm put to sleep for what feels like 5 centuries, i eventually take the Tangela out. Next is Bellossom and i opt to keep Babatte in. She sets up the sun, which seems like a really stupid thing for a grass gym leader to do, but i have no fire types to abuse the sun. I just have Wing Attack to spam. However, while i was asleep Tangela did so much damage to me that one of Bellossom's Solarbeams brings me into crit range, so after Erika heals up i decide to switch to Meppel. Meppel immediately falls into crit range though; i've no choice now but to heal up. The sun runs out the next turn, so i can safely drill peck my foe into oblivion. Drill Peck then one-shots Jumpluff, but leaves Victreebel with a sliver. He just sets up the sun again though, so i'm free to kill him. Three kanto badges in hand.

There's nothing else to do in Celadon, so i head east and catch a Spearow on the small bit of land between Celadon and Saffron, naming it Tunisia. I've already explored the sights of Saffron, so rather than lingering, i take the route north. This is a fairly short route with no trainers, so i just catch a Pidgey here, name it Joris and head into Cerulean. When i head into the gym though, i find that it's still empty. Guess i should go looking for Misty so i can fight her. I first look on the route to the west, but other than a Rattata i nickname Brat. So i set my course north of Cerulean, catching Bella the Weepinbell in the grass next to Nugget Bridge. Glad to see Team Rocket's no longer openly recruiting here, though i have little confidence that what i did in Kansai actually put an end to the organization; they always spring back up. On my way over to the cerulean cape, i catch another new friend: a Pidgey i nickname Piggy. At the cape, i finally find Misty out on a date. Somehow my presence scares the guy away though; i'm sorry to intrude on Misty's love life like this, but at least she agrees to head back to the gym to take me on.

Don't think i'm heading back right away though; instead i'm gonna enjoy this awesome view for a bit. If i ever get myself a girl, i'm definitely bringing her to this spot for a romantic evening. And with that, it's time to call it a day; will head back to Cerulean next time.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My current team:

Meppel (Dodrio) lv 39
Johan (Slowbro) lv 48
Pip (Ampharos) lv 48
Babatte (Golbat) lv 39
DK (Mankey) lv 15
Underminer (Dugtrio) lv 32

Time to take on Misty's gym. This is a water gym, but Underminer needs the experience so no one is sitting this one out. No puzzle here; i just beat up the gym trainers and walk straight over to Misty. She leads with Golduck and i lead with Pip. One Thunderpunch kills the duck, and next is Quagsire. I switch out to Johan for this one and kill it in two surfs; all my foe does is Amnesia. Misty's Starmie and Lapras then fell to my Thunderpunches, getting me my fourth badge.

The road west is blocked, so there's little else to do than head south, back to Vermillion. I feel like Underminer is strong enough now to take on Surge's gym, so i head there. This is an electric gym, so Babatte and Meppel are sitting this one out, though i am taking Johan with me. Instead of these two, i'll be joined by Piggy and Joris the Pidgeys, as death fodder. Fortunately, Surge has disabled his disgusting gym puzzle, so after beating up his trainers, we can just walk up and challenge him. He leads with Raichu and i lead with Underminer. His Quick Attacks do far more than i thought they would though, and by the time my Digs kill him, i'm at only 8 HP due to a crit. Next up is Electrode, for whom i switch in Johan. He sets up a Double Team, but my Surf brings him to a sliver regardless. He then explodes, dealing about a third of my health. Magneton is third and i have to switch Underminer back in. To avoid any risk, i heal up so that i can tank a Swift, then i kill my foe with Dig. Then comes the second Electrode, and i again send out Johan. I bring him to a sliver as he sets up Double Team, then this one also explodes, which i tank easily. My final foe is Surge's Electabuzz, for whom Underminer comes back out. A crit Quick Attack brings me to th red though, and my Dig doesn't kill. I switch Joris in to try and get a free switch, but Surge uses this time to Hyper Potion his Electabuzz. Joris goes down te next turn, and Pip comes in. Pip's only non-resisted move is Tackle, but Electabuzz insists on spamming Thunder so i outdamage him anyway and get the kill.

Underminer didn't perform as well as i thought he would, but i still think this is the moment to take away his EXP Share and give it to DK. There's only one way to go now though: both the northern and the southern paths to western Kanto are blocked, so i'll have to head there through Diglett's Cave. The Diglett seem less hostile now though, now that one of their brothers is on my side. When i reach Pewter City though, i find that the fascinating Museum of Science that used to be here has closed its doors for renovations. Guess i'll just head over to the gym then. This is a rock gym, but i see little reason to leave anyone behind. Brock's still not a fan of gym puzzles, so i just beat up his gym trainer and then challenge him. He leads with his Graveler and i with Johan. This opponent is so slow even Johan outspeeds, and a single Surf does the job. Brock then goes for Omastar and i switch to Pip, who takes it out with just one Thunderpunch. For the Rhyhorn that comes next, Johan comes back and Surfs it to death. Pip comes back to kill Kabutops, and finally, Johan comes back to kill Onix. Six badges in hand.

Since there's nothing to do here, i opt to head east to view the magnificent Mt. Moon. Along the way, i run into a wild Rattata, so i catch the bugger and name him Bugger. Once i reach Mt. Moom though, i unexpectedly run into that dipshit ???. It's been a while though, and he has done some reflecting on what would make him a better trainer. He asks for a battle so he can show me, which i accept. He leads with his Sneasel and i lead with Meppel. Drill Peck brings him to the red as he misses a Screech, then my next move kills him. Next up is Magneton, and since Underminer did well against Surge's one, i deploy him here too. Dig takes him out, so ??? goes for his ace, Meganium. This is clearly a job for Babatte. My foe unfortunately gets a Light Screen off,and Wing Attack does less than half so i also have to tank a Body Slam before i take him down. My next opponent is Alakazam, for whom i decide Johan is the best answer. Johan's Headbutts easily outdamage Recover and Zam can barely hurt me with his Psychics, so i win with ease. For the enemy Golbat, i opt not to go for a mirror match, but instead i send out Pip and kill it with a Thunderpunch. Last is Gengar who cannot hurt Meppel except through Curse, and since Drill Peck does over half, that means victory is assured. After he suffers this defeat though, ??? shows that he truly has learned, stating that he will win next time because of the pokemon supporting him.

I continue exploring the caves and meet a wee Geodude, whom i shall nickname Stoner. After only a short while, i reach the Mt. Moon Square, one of the prettiest sights in all of Kanto. They say that on monday nights, the Clefairy come out and dance in the open here. Unfortunately though, this is a Thursday morning, so no Clefairy show for me. I head through these fascinating caves to the other side and beat up a few trainers there, but i have no desire to return to Cerulean, so i just head back through Mt. Moon to Pewter, where i decide to call it a day.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My current team:

Underminer (Dugtrio) lv 38
Johan (Slowbro) lv 49
Pip (Ampharos) lv 48
DK (Mankey) lv 27
Babatte (Golbat) lv 39
Meppel (Dodrio) lv 40

The only direction left to explore is south, so i head down and catch a wild Pidgey that i nickname Birdyman. I proceed through this tree maze; could have sworn Viridian Forest was on this route. Not important though, cause at the end of the route, i find myself in Viridian City. I immediately head over to the gym of course, but the gym leader is away. Why does that always happen when i visit this town? There's little else to do here in town except go for a swim in the pond, so i head in. As i'm frolicking in the water, i get approached by a wild Poliwhirl who seems to want to join my team, so i catch him and name him Swirly.

I decide to head further south, and catch a Rattata along the way. It shall bear the nickname Rioolrat. As i'm beating up the trainers here, we also get an evolution: DK is now a Primeape, though he's still not ready to fight for himself. I proceed into Pallet Town, the home of Professor Oak's lab. I'm happy to see that the old man hasn't wandered off, so i stay for a bit and chat with him. He actually remembers me this time, and tells me that once i've beaten all the gyms in Kanto, he'll have a gift for me. We'll see whether he remembers that once i actually do beat all the gyms. Anyway, there's little else to do in this town, so i fish up Sheldon the Shellder and then hop on Johan's back as we explore the seas.

During this exploration, we find a small patch of land containing a wild Tangela, but it flees before i get the chance to catch it. We swim on, and eventually we reach the island that used to house the town of Cinnabar. All this loss of life due to the volcano is really awful, but i do wonder why people keep settling in this place since this keeps happening. In this town, i actually come across my old rival Ben, who is lamenting on the complete devastation we see here. We catch up a bit, and he tells me he has once again taken control of the Viridian Gym. He invites me to come challenge him there, but i don't feel like my team has what it takes to beat him yet. So i fish up a Tentacruel, name it Squidward and sail east to go looking for Blaine. Along the way, i catch Tentacruel's pre-evo Tentacool and name him Octo.

Eventually i find Blaine in a small cave on the Seafoam Islands and challenge him to a fight for the badge. He leads with his Magcargo and i lead with Johan. Surf kills him in one go, so Blaine sends out Magmar. Magmar unfortunately gets the sun up, so my Surf does not one-shot. He then fires off a Confuse Ray, but that does not stop my Surf from connecting and killing. Last is his Rapidash, so Johan again stays in. Rapidash misses a fire blast and i deal over half with Surf despite the sun, then the turn thereafter Fire Blast connects to do next to nothing, and i finish the fight. Seven badges in hand.

I'm not ready to face Ben yet, so i explore the rest of the seas and catch a wild Tentacool, naming him Tentz. Then it's time for training. I train for a bit, then i call it a day.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My current team:

Meppel (Dodrio) lv 40
Johan (Slowbro) lv 50
Pip (Ampharos) lv 49
DK (Primeape) lv 35
Babatte (Golbat) lv 40
Underminer (Dugtrio) lv 41

Since i've trained up quite a bit, i think it's time to head to Viridian and take on Ben. He leads with his Pidgeot, so i send out Pip. He hits a weak Quick Attack as my Thunderpunch crits and takes him out in one go. Next is Rhydon so i switch Johan in; he sets up a Sandstorm as i kill him with Surf. For the Exeggutor that comes out next, i decide to go for Babatte. I get seeded, and my foe opts to deploy a Full Restore as the leech seed and the sandstorm batter away at me, so i end up switching to Meppel. Meppel is taken to the yellow by an egg bomb combined with the sandstorm, but he manages to finish the palm tree off with a Drill Peck. It's now time to face Alakazam, for whom i send Johan back out. Two surfs take him out as the sandstorm subsides; helps that my foe missed Disable. Second last is Gyarados, which is a job for Pip. All the big water snake gets to do is set up Rain Dance; Thunderpunch was obviously an OHKO. Last but not least is Ben's Arcanine, another job for Johan. It only takes one Surf to kill the big dog and grab the win.

And with that, i've collected all eight badges of Kanto once again. I think this is a good moment to call it a day.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My current team:

Pip (Ampharos) lv 51
Johan (Slowbro) lv 51
DK (Primeape) lv 50
Meppel (Dodrio) lv 50
Babatte (Golbat) lv 50
Underminer (Dugtrio) lv 50

Now that i have all the badges, i head back to Professor Oak for his gift. He tells me that he will pull some strings to grant me access to Mt. Silver, the best place to train up my guys further and be the very best, like no one ever was. So i head back to Viridian and set course due west, catching Epona the Ponyta along the way. I proceed past the pokemon league entrance gate, and then west towards the tallest mountain in Kansai. Along the way though, i accidentally KO a Tangela i was trying to catch. Once i finally reach the mountain though, i run into another Tangela, which i do manage to catch. It shall be named FSM. I train here for a bit, then i call it a day.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My current team:

DK (Primeape) lv 51
Johan (Slowbro) lv 51
Babatte (Golbat) lv 51
Underminer (Dugtrio) lv 51
Meppel (Dodrio) lv 51
Pip (Ampharos) lv 51

I also went around the region and collected all rare candies i was missing, but i didn't feel like writing this into the story

As i'm training my guys up on the slopes of Mt. Silver, Babatte finally reaches her final stage and becomes a Crobat. I keep on training, then i call it a day.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My current team:

Johan (Slowbro) lv 54
Meppel (Dodrio) lv 54
Pip (Ampharos) lv 54
DK (Primeape) lv 54
Babatte (Crobat) lv 55
Underminer (Dugtrio) lv 55

Isn't this just the single most fun part of any pokemon game? Gold and Silver are really the greatest pokemon games of all time, with this amazing level curve.

A lot of training later, i decide i should try and ascend to the peak of the mountain. It's been so long since i sustained that head injury that i'm sure the height will be fine. So i climb one of the most impressive mountains i've ever had the pleasure of scaling, but at the top i find something truly strange. It seems like a rift in the fabric of space-time itself. I head closer to get a better look, but before i realise that this is in fact an Ultra Wormhole, i get sucked in with no ay back.

Now adrift in ultra space, i see many portals to many different worlds, when out of them falls what looks like another version of me. She seems disoriented and attacks me, sending out a Pikachu. I'll have to defend myself, so i send out Underminer. Underminer fells the electric mouse in a single Earthquake, so other me sends out her Venusaur. I switch to Babatte to fight this foe and hit a Fly while he sets up the sun and hits a 4x resisted Solarbeam. Another Fly takes him to a sliver, and i finish things off with a Wing Attack. Other me responds to this by sending out her Espeon, and my heart skips a beat; I'd recognize that cute smile anywhere. This is Buikun. Still, i have a duty to my current team, so it is with a heavy heart that i send out Meppel. My foe outspeeds though and sets up a Reflect to weaken my Drill Peck. A single Psychic then takes me all the way to the red as i go for Fly to waste time. I've no choice but to switch, so Johan comes in on another psychic that crits and does over half. I have to heal here, so i use a Hyper Potion to tank another Psychic. Reflect fades, and fortunately Buikun does not immediately set up another. My surf doesn't kill though, so after tanking another Psychic i'm forced to heal up again. The turn thereafter though, i hit another Surf and the foe's Buikun goes down. Snorlax is next, so i send out DK and hit a Cross Chop for well over half, but my foe hits a Body Slam for well over half. I decide to risk it and hit another Cross Chop, which gets the kill. We're next facing Charizard, so i send out Pip. I get trapped in a Fire Spin as Thunderpunch does over half, then his Flamethrower brings me to the yellow as i get the kill. Only Blastoise is left, but everyone on my squad is heavily damaged. I switch to Babatte to get some Flies in, but that move does far less than i thought it would. Babatte dodges all 5 of Blastoise's Blizzards though; 3 of them because she was in the air. Surf brings her to the red, so i heal up, but i find that Surf does over half so heal-stalling is pointless. So it is with a heavy heart that i allow this Blastoise to kill Babatte so that i can heal Johan up. I bring Johan in after Babatte goes down, and a few Psychics later, the big turtle dies.

I won that tough fight, but i'm still adrift here in Ultra Space. As i drift aimlessly with no hope of ever returning to my world, i take some time to commemorate all those who gave their lives so that i could become the champion of Kanto and Kansai once again.

Dylan the Totodile. You were my starter, and you were supposed to be there for the whole journey, but unfortunately you lost your life in the Azalea Gym Massacre. RIP.

Burundi the Spearow. You did great work against Elder Li, bot you ended up losing your life in the Azalea Gym Massacre. RIP.

CO-two the Gastly. It was your missed Hypnosis that cost us the match against Bugsy, but you still didn't deserve to lose your life in that massacre. RIP

Rocky the Geodude. You soloed Falkner, and did good work against Bugsy. Too bad you missed that last Rock Throw, otherwise that whole team would still be alive. You didn't deserve to die though. RIP

Jinglebell the Bellsprout. You joined us just before Bugsy, where you died in the Azalea Gym Massacre. RIP.

Hardin the Butterfree. You joined us after the Azalea Gym Massacre, and your poisonpowder was key in allowing us to get our vengeance on Bugsy. You also did good work taking out ???'s Bayleef, but then you lost your life to an exploding Pineco. RIP

Vladimir the Zubat. You came in after the Azalea Gym Massacre, but then you died to a random Magmar. RIP

Skeever the Rattata. Your story is much the same as that of Vladimir; that damn Magmar got you too. RIP

Blargh the Caterpie. You weren't going to amount to much, but we still appreciate your sacrifice against the Magmar. RIP

Konaan the Nidoking. You joined after the Magmar, and though you did nothing against Whitney's stupid cow, you partook in many battles thereafter until a random Geodude blew up and killed you. RIP

Louise the Rattata. We appreciate your valiant sacrifice that let us beat Chuck. RIP

Sandy the Sandslash. You came in after the Azalea Gym Massacre and helped take revenge on Bugsy, and your digs also proved pivotal in stopping Whitney's cow from just rolling out all over our team. You also proved your worth against Jasmine's Magnemites; you were truly the powerhouse of the team until that Rocket's Weezing blew up on you. RIP

Angie the Lanturn. We needed a Surfer, and you did that job well, joining us after Morty. You were essential in beating Pryce and Jasmine, as well as the various fights with ???. You also were a great help in stopping Team Rocket's revival. You almost singlehandedly took out Clair's Kingdra too. Unfortunately Lance proved too strong. RIP

Killer the Scyther. You were the one to deal the final blow on Whitney's cow even though you had just joined the team. You were also great vs Chuck, but Lance was too difficult. RIP

Tava the Pidgeot. You joined us after the Azalea Gym Massacre and were with us all throughout our journeys through Kansai. Your immunity to ghosts proved valuable against Morty, and fought in many more battles. The battle with Lance proved too tough though. RIP

Remy the Raticate. You joined us after the Magmar, but you did nothing in the Whitney fight. You were great vs Morty though, as well as against Pryce and the rockets. Shame you were unable to use your strength to take out Lance. RIP

Starlight the Togetic. You served two stints on the team; you joined us once your egg hatched as we were training up for the Bugsy rematch, and while you failed to Sweet Kiss Whitney's cow, you were essential in beating Morty. Unfortunately, you then had to leave the squad as we needed someone who could Surf. You almost immediately rejoined though; after Konaan's death, a spot opened up and you immediately took it. You did great work against Team Rocket and ???, as well as against Will. You also fought valiantly against Lance, but unfortunately he proved too tough. RIP

Arbre the Sudowoodo. You joined the squad after Sandy passed away, and though you did great against Koga, you were less great at taking down Lance. RIP

Red the Gyarados. You were on the squad for the second attempt at the League, and lost your life to Lance due to a missplay of mine. RIP

Hitmon the Hitmonlee. You joined us for our second league attempt, but Bruno proved too tough. RIP

Tunnel Rat the Raticate. You did good work against the Elite Four, but Lance proved too tough and one-shot you. RIP

Soapy the Piloswine. You did an amazing job in the rematch fight against Lance, but unfortunately you did not live to see the hall of fame. RIP

Joris the Pidgey. Your sacrifice let us beat Surge. RIP

Babatte the Crobat. You came in after we beat the league, and almost singlehandedly beat Erika. You didn't evolve until just before the final battle, where unfortunately you lot your life. RIP

All those sacrifices are now in vain though. I will never return to my own world, and i will probably die here in Ultra Space.

Chapter 20: Japanese Blue will start in not too long

Chapter 20: Japanese Blue

Rules for this game will be as follows:
  1. The challenge is complete upon defeating the Pokemon League
  2. I will not make use of the Game Corner
  3. Pokemon encountered while my box is full do not count as my encounter for that location. If this happens, i have to immediately head back to the pokemon center and change box.
Never played this game before, but from what i've heard it's just Red/Blue with better encounter tables.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Who am i? Where am i? All i remember is falling from some weird hole in the sky. Good thing some lady took me in and nursed me back to health; says she is my mother. I've no reason to doubt it. Anyway, i think i'll go explore town a bit. When i step in the grass though, an old guy yells at me that you can't do that if you have no pokemon with you. He takes me to his lab here in town, where there's three poke balls lying on the table. Guy's grandson is also here; apparently he's always been my rival or something. The old man offers both of us one of the pokemon lying here; my choice is the cutie Bulbasaur, which i name Fushi.

As i head off, Ben challenges me to a fight. It's strange; i feel like i've been through this whole song and dance before. Fushi ends up losing, but this was jut a friendly scuffle anyway; Ben does not finish Fushi off. With that though, we both head off on our journeys. I head north to a place called Viridian City, but when i head into the mart to buy some poke balls, the clerk asks me to bring a package to the professor in Pallet Town. I thing the old guy was a professor; i'll go bring it to him. When i deliver it, the professor says he has another gift for me and Ben; he has two pokedexes that he would like filled out. I'll do the best i can, but i won't be focusing on that i think.

I head back north to Viridian and buy some poke balls so i can start my journey proper. With these new balls, i catch Poppy the Pidgey on route 1, Mushi the Caterpie on Route 2, Blargh the other Caterpie in Viridian Forest and Konaan the male Nidoran on Route 22. I don't think i have the power right now to make it through Viridian Forest to the other side, so i decide to train Fushi, Konaan, Poppy and Blargh up.

After Blargh evolves into Metapod, i decide to go and explore Route 22. Here, i run into Ben, who tells me that this is the road to the pokemon league, which i can't enter until i have at least 8 badges. He then challenges me to a fight; he leads with Pidgey and i lead with Fushi. A sand-attack leads to me missing two leech seeds in a row as my foe crits a Gust. I'm in crit range now, so i use a potion to get out of it, then i finally hit my leech seed. I then opt to switch Blargh in, but Blargh's tackles keep missing due to sand-attack. I end up sacrificing Mushi to get Konaan in safely, and he hits two leers before he starts Tackling. He falls into crit range too though, so i make a hard switch to Poppy on a missed sand-attack. Poppy tanks a crit and brings his foe to te red, then i switch back to Blargh as Leech Seed kills the Pidgey. Ben also has a Charmander though, for whom i switch Fushi back in. I hit a Leech Seed, then i accidentally go for another one as he scratches me to low health. Everyone has low health now though; this is getting dangerous. I see no choice but to sacrifice another mon. Blargh comes back out and tanks one Scratch, but the next one kills him. I send out Poppy next and hit two sand-attacks, causing Charmander to miss a bunch as i Gust it to death. I've won, but at great cost. I think i'll just call it a day now.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My current team:

Fushi (Bulbasaur) lv 8
Poppy (Pidgey) lv 8
Konaan (Nidoran-Male) lv 7

Apparently Metapod doesn't learn harden upon evolving in gen 1. My strategy relied on that, but i only noticed in the battle itself that i did not have the move.

This pokemon league place sounds like an interesting place to visit, so i decide to dedicate my journey to the collection of these gym badges. The gym here in Viridian is closed for some reason, so i decide to trek north through the Viridian Forest. On the other side, i reach the city of Pewter, but someone tells me the gym leader, a fellow named Brock, is really strong, so i decide to do some training first.

After Fushi learns the move Vine Whip, i head into the gym. This is a rock gym, but i only have 3 pokemon so no one is sitting this one out. No puzzle here; i just beat up the trainer and then challenge Brock himself. He leads with Geodude and i lead with Fushi. A single Vine Whip kills the Geodude, and the same fate befalls the Onix that comes after. One badge in hand. Since i'm here in Pewter anyway, i decide i might as well visit the Museum of Science. Place has some fascinating displays on ancient fossils as well as space travel, though it is curious to have both natural history and space exploration in the same museum.

I guess i should head on with my journey though. I head east towards Mt. Moon and catch myself a Pidgey along the way, naming it Tori. At the base of this great mountain, i rest a bit in the pokemon center, where i meet a guy selling a rare pokemon for 500 yen, so of course i do it and name the magikarp i've acquired Sakanasama. I then proceed into the caves under this magnificent mountain, where i catch a wild Zubat and name it Batman. Don't think i'll train up any of these new catches though. Rather, i'll just proceed through the mountain.

Inside the mountain, i fight a ton of trainers, including the Yakuza itself. I have a feeling i'm supposed to know these "Team Rocket" guys from something, but no particular memories come up. As i'm fighting them though, Konaan evolves into Nidorino and Fushi evolves into Ivysaur. I also find a Moon Stone here in the depths, allowing Konaan to reach his final stage, the mighty Nidoking. Things don't all go well though; against a Rocket grunt and his Raticate, i'm forced to sacrifice Tori to get Konaan in safely; everyone was badly damaged. Following this loss, i decide to use an Escape Rope to get out of the caves, then i call it a day.

My current team:

Fushi (Ivysaur) lv 17
Konaan (Nidoking) lv 17

Time to make my way through Mt. Moon, for real this time. At the end, i find two fossils, but i agree to share with another fossil hunter. I take Lord Helix, he takes the Dome Fossil. After this, i head out of te caves on the Cerulean side, catch a Rattata i name Nezumi and head into Cerulean. The gym here seems tough, so i think i'll first go and explore the route up north. When i head there though, Ben suddenly comes up to me and challenges me to a fight, to show off how much stronger he's been getting. He leads with his Pidgeotto and i lead with Konaan. He hits me with two Quick Attacks before going down to my Horn Attacks. I then have Poppy take out Ben's Abra, after which Fushi comes out against Rattata. Two Vine Whips take out the rat, meaning Ben is down to his last mon, his Charmander. I switch Konaan back in, and he manages to two-shot while taking barely any damage.

After i beat him, Ben tells me about a guy named Bill who lives north of here, who might be worth visiting. So i decide to beat up the 5 trainers on Nugget Bridge; while i'm doing so, Poppy evolves, meaning i now have a Pidgeotto of my own. By beating all 5, i win myself a Nugget, as well as a chance to join Team Rocket, to which i'm gonna have to say no. I beat up the recruiter, then i head on to the north side of the bridge and then west into a grass patch. I find a Metapod there, but i run out of poke balls trying to catch it. So i quickly head back to Cerulean and buy some more balls, then i head back across the bridge and proceed eastward. There, i catch myself an Oddish and name it Weed. Not adding it to the squad though; still only have 3 party members i actually use.

At the end of the route, i reach the Cerulean Cape, a beautiful scenery where many people from Cerulean go on dates. I wish i had someone special to share this view with, maybe i do but i just don't remember it, but alas. Bill lives here though; i wish i had a house in this pretty a locale. Anyway, i enter his home, but i see only a Clefairy there. It can talk though; it tells me that it is in fact Bill, after a science experiment gone wrong. I help him reverse the experiment and return to human form, and as a reward he gives me a ticket to attend a party aboard the SS Anne in Vermillion. I've some vague recollection of attending these parties in the past, but i can't put my finger on when or in what circumstances. Anyway, i should probably leave Bill in peace now and head back to Cerulean.

I'm now up for the task of challenging the gym. This is a water gym, but i only have 3 active team members so no one's sitting this one out. No puzzle here; i just need to be careful not to accidentally fall into the water. So i just beat up the trainers and make my way over to Misty. She leads with her Staryu and i with Fushi. Fushi's Vine Whips destroy both her Staryu and her Starmie with ease, meaning i've got my second badge. I then decide to do some exploring around town, and i find that a Team Rocket grunt has broken into a house and stolen their Dig TM. I track the grunt and beat him up, retrieving the TM. As a reward, the owner allows me to keep the TM; what matters is that the culprit was caught.

Time to head down south. Along the way, i catch myself a wild Pidgey and bestow upon it the nickname Kyne. I also find a daycare that's willing to look after my pokemon for me, but i see no reason to not look after them myself. Anyway, the road to Tokyo - sorry, "Saffron City" - is closed, so i have to take the underground path beneath the city. In this path though, i encounter another trainer looking to make a trade. I decide to trade Nezumi for her Poliwag, named Romotan. I think Romotan will make a nice addition to my squad; i'll be switch-training him until he's ready to take part in real battles. On the other end of the tunnel, i catch myself an Oddish and name it Naza. I proceed onward to Vermillion City, where i decide to call it a day.

My current team:

Romotan (Poliwag) lv 16
Poppy (Pidgeotto) lv 21
Fushi (Ivysaur) lv 23
Konaan (Nidoking) lv 22
Batman (Zubat) lv 10
Sakanasama (Magikarp) lv 5

Before i head to the party, i go and explore the route to the east; i'm sure i have time for that. There, i catch Niger the Spearow. At the end of the route, i find that my path is blocked by a sleeping Snorlax; since i have no poke flute on me, i think i'll just go back and attend the boat party now. Unfortunately, i'm late; the boat is gonna leave soon. Guess that's on me; should have just headed there immediately. There's still some trainers to beat up though, and while i am doing so, Romotan evolves into Poliwhirl. As i head toward the captains cabin to compliment him on the parties he throws, i run into Ben, who informs me the captain isn't feeling well and challenges me to a fight. He also informs me he's registered over 40 mons in his dex already, but i don't care about the dex so i just send out Konaan as he sends out Pidgeotto. I take minor damage from Quick Attack, then i Thrash him apart. For the incoming Raticate, i switch to Fushi, who takes only 13 damage from a crit Quick Attack and proceeds to two-shot with Vine Whip. Kadabra's next, so i swap to Poppy and almost OHKO him with Quick Attack. Ben then uses a potion, but that doesn't stop my next quick attack from killing. Last is Charmeleon, which is Romotan's job. Two Bubblebeams later, victory is mine.

I head into the captain's cabin, where i find the guy throwing up. I give him a good rub on the back, which clears up his seasickness, and he gives me HM01 Cut as thanks. Really not sure why a sea captain would get seasick; isn't he supposed to be out at sea most of his days? Anyway, he tells me the ship is about to depart and that i should probably get off, so i do just that. I wave the ship goodbye as it sails off into the sunset, then i go around town to see what else i can do in Vermillion. The chairman of the pokemon fan club rambles at me for a bit, then he gives me a bike voucher to reward me for my listening skills. The only thing else to do here in town is the gym. This is an electric gym, but i already have two pieces of fodder on my team so i see no reason for Poppy or Romotan to sit this one out. Surge's puzzle is complete bullshit; i have to search the trash for two hidden switches, and there isn't even an opportunity to wash my hands after i've finally found both. So yeah, i walk up to surge to give him a piece of my mind and beat up his pokemon. He leads with Voltorb and i with Konaan. Two thrashes and he's dead. For Pikachu though, i switch to Fushi, who two-shots it with Vine Whip. I switch back to Konaan for Raichu; all Raichu can do is Growl as i Thrash it down. Three badges in hand, but i think it's time to call it a day.

There's only one place left to explore in this vicinity, so i decide to head into the nearby cave, where i'm immediately assaulted by a wild Dugtrio. I manage to catch the guy, so i bestow upon him the nickname Dagusan. On the other side, i find myself near Pewter City. I head south a bit, where i run into Professor Oak's aide who gives me HM05 Flash because of all the progress i've made with the dex. There's little else here though, so i head back up north to Pewter. With my newfound ability to cut down bushes, i can visit a secret section of the museum not available to most visitors. There, one of the scientists asks me to do him a favour: he wants me to deliver his Old Amber to the lab in Cinnabar so they can try and resurrect the pokemon from the fossil. Idk how i feel about necromancy, but i'll just do it. Once i get there, that is.

Little else to do here, so i guess i'll head back to Cerulean to cash in on my Bike Voucher. So i trek back through Diglett's Cave and then north, and i head to the bike shop to exchange the voucher for a bike. Eh, i prefer to walk. I decide to go and explore east of here, where i catch Ratacco the Rattata among the rocky outcroppings. Further on, near the entrance to the Rock Tunnel, i catch a Spearow, which i nickname Malawi. I decide to go and explore the cave itself, but it's pitch-black in there and i have no pokemon that can learn Flash. I can't find the way back in this darkness; guess i'm gonna die in here. I do catch a wild Geodude and name him Takeshi; not that that still matters.

I don't know how long i was stuck in that stupid cave. Maybe it was hours, maybe days, maybe weeks. But after wandering around exhausted, starving and dehydrated for ages in the pitch-black darkness, i finally saw a ray of light: the exit! I make my way out and find myself in Lavender Town. I take some time to recover, eat and drink a bit, then i decide to go and pay my respects at this town's famous pokemon graveyard. I run into Ben here, who's mourning the loss of his trusted Raticate. He challenges me to a fight though; seems a bit disrespectful in a place like this, but his Pidgeotto is already out so i'll send out Konaan. Thrash takes the bird out, and next is Exeggcute. I decide this is Poppy's job, and she takes out the eggs with a few Quick Attacks. Ben's Gyarados is up next, a job i will bestow upon Fushi. I bombard him with Vine Whips, but after he hits a Dragon Rage i'm forced to switch. Poppy comes in on a Leer and finishes him with Quick Attack, meaning we're now facing Kadabra. I keep Poppy in and one-shot the thing, so Ben is now down to just his Charmeleon. I obviously let Romotan handle that; two Bubblebeams later, victory is mine.

The upper floors are haunted by angry ghosts; i flee the premises and decide to take a look down south. I beat up all the trainers on the piers, but then i run into the same sleeping snorlax that blocked my way when i tried to enter this route from Vermillion. Guess this is a good time to call it a day.

My current team:

Konaan (Nidoking) lv 29
Fushi (Ivysaur) lv 30
Poppy (Pidgeotto) lv 29
Romotan (Poliwhirl) lv 29
Batman (Zubat) lv 10
Nazo (Oddish) lv 13

Nazo is here instead of Sakanasama because i was trying out whether various of the mons in my box could learn Flash; none of them could. Also, i skipped all the channelers for now because Romotan is the only one who can hit them for neutral damage and i don't want him to outlevel the others too much. I'm not sure if you're supposed to fight them now or after getting the silph scope, so i don't count it as skipping them.

Since the road south is blocked, i decide to head west. On the road there, i encounter a wild Meowth, which i catch and name Rocket. Rocket will be joining us, and i'll be switch-training him against random trainers for the coming while. Tokyo's still closed, so i take the underground path beneath the city to the small stretch of land between Tokyo and Celadon, where i catch a second Meowth. This one i will name J'Zargo. When i arrive in celadon, i find the city overrun by Team Rocket, so i do some exploring to see if i can find their base. I don't find it, but i do find a poke ball with an Eevee just lying around, so i snag it and bestow upon it the nickname Buizari.

Since i can't find the rocket base, i decide to go do some shopping. I buy a Thunderstone for Buizari and a Water Stone for Romotan, though while i evolve Buizari to Jolteon immediately, i hold off on evolving Romotan for now. On the rooftop of the department store, i find a little girl who is very thirsty, so i give her some drinks from the vending machine and she gives me a bunch of TMs as a reward. I also buy myself a lemonade for later, when i feel thirsty. I also obtain HM02 Fly nearby, though how i got it is a secret so i won't relay that information here.

I decide to resume my search for the crooks, so on a hunch, i head into the casino. Only crooks would profit off of people gambling their life away, after all. I find one of the crooks guarding a poster, so i beat him up and examine the poster, which contains a secret switch. I turn the switch, and a stairway opens up. This must be their base. I charge in because i have no sense of self-preservation, and i beat up dozens of rocket grunts. Initially i can't use the elevator, but eventually one of the grunts i beat up gives me the lift key, allowing me full access to the base. I thus make my way to the boss's office; guy's name is Giovanni. I challenge him to a fight, so he leads with Onix as i send out Rocket. I immediately switch to Fushi and take him out with Razor Leaf. For the Rhyhorn that comes after, i switch back to Rocket and then immediately back to Fushi, and i kill it with another razor leaf. Last is his Kangaskhan, for whom i send out Konaan. I Thrash him down to the red, but then i get confused while i'm in kill range for Comet Punch. So i switch Poppy in on a Bite and finish the fight with Quick Attack.

Giovanni leaves the area along with his grunts, so i just pick up the Silph Scope he left behind and head out. I think it's about time to call it a day though.

My current team:

Rocket (Meowth) lv 25
Fushi (Ivysaur) lv 31
Konaan (Nidoking) lv 31
Romotan (Poliwhirl) lv 31
Poppy (Pidgeotto) lv 31
Buizeri (Jolteon) lv 25

My guys are so overleveled, i've actually run afoul of the obedience mechanic

Time to take on the gym. This is a grass gym, so Romotan will be sitting this one out; he's on a disobedient streak anyway. Instead, we will be joined by Malawi the Spearow, as death fodder. There's no puzzle here, i just need to cut down some trees to get to Erika. She leads with her Victreebel and i lead with Rocket. I immediately switch to Fushi and start executing death by a thousand Cuts while she spams ineffective Poisonpowders. For the Tangela that follows, i send out Poppy, who brings it to the red with Fly but is then Wrapped for a billion turns. When the wrap finally ends, i take the kill with quick attack. For Erika's final mon, Vileplume, i send Rocket back out, then i switch to Fushi for another death by a thousand Cuts as he just tries to poison me. Victory is mine! To celebrate, Fushi decides to evolve into its final stage, the mighty Venusaur!

With this fourth badge in hand, i decide to head back to Lavender and brave the top floors of the pokemon tower. With my new Silph Scope, i can identify the ghosts haunting the place; one of them is a Gastly, so i catch it and name it Gassy. Towards the top floor though, i encounter an actual ghost; the spirit of the Cubone mother. I'd heard that she had been killed by Team Rocket; those evil bastards. Now it's up to me to put her spirit to rest. I defeat her in battle and she departs for the afterlife, allowing me to progress to the top floor. There, i find a bunch of Team Rocket grunts holding Mr. Fuji hostage, so i beat the shit out of them. As i'm doing so, Rocket evolves into Persian to show that he's better than these goons. I still don't think i'm actually gonna use him though.

After i beat up all the grunts, Mr. Fuji tells me he was actually here of his own free will, to lecture Team Rocket about their evil ways. We head back to his house, and he gives me a nice Poke Flute as thanks for beating up the goons. This can be used to wake up sleeping Snorlax, so i fly to Celadon to try it on the snorlax west of there. It actually works; the big guy will be nicknamed Kabisha. I proceed to head into the gatehouse to Cycling Road, but you need to ride a bike to proceed. I really prefer to walk, so i think i'll just call it a day here.

My current team:

Buizari (Jolteon) lv 29
Fushi (Venusaur) lv 32
Konaan (Nidoking) lv 32
Poppy (Pidgeotto) lv 32
Rocket (Persian) lv 28
Romotan (Poliwhirl) lv 31

Guess there's no other way to proceed, so i just hop on my bike and proceed down the road. Along the way, i catch myself a wild Raticate, which i nickname Rodent. Further down the path, Romotan finally learns the move Body Slam, so i decide he's ready. I give him the Water Stone i've been holding and he promptly evolves into his final stage, Poliwrath. On the other side of the path, in the gatehouse, i run into a guy who's looking to trade his Tauros for a Persian. He guarantees me he can take good care of Rocket, so i have no problem leaving my partner in his care. In return, i get Gyuuta the Tauros, who will be joining our team. Anyway, i'm glad i can finally get off my bike and walk on my own two feet, so i step outside, feel the grass under my shoes, and promptly run into a wild Doduo. I catch it of course, and bestow upon it the nickname Ni-Atama.

A little further, i find myself in Fuchsia City, famed for its Safari Zone. I of course immediately decide to check that place out. I run into a Scyther there, but sadly it immediately gets away and i never get a chance at catching something else. I do find two things of note in this wildlife reserve though: first, i stunble upon a set of gold teeth someone has lost. Second, i find the secret house within the zone and receive HM03 Surf as a reward. When i get back to town, i decide to be a good girl and look for the owner of these golden teeth. I stumble upon a fisherman who has not lost a set of teeth, but gives me a Good Rod anyway to reward me for my kindness. I try it out in his pond and fish up a Poliwag, which i proceed to catch and name Tajiri. I continue my search, and find that the teeth belong to the Safari Zome Warden, who as thanks for returning them hands me HM04 Strength.

I don't think i'm strong enough yet to take on this town's gym, so instead i decide to explore to the east, catching an Oddish along the way which i name Kusa. A bit further, i catch Wuppie the Venonat, but once i reach the fence maze i decide to call it a day.

My current team:

Poppy (Pidgeotto) lv 34
Fushi (Venusaur) lv 34
Buizari (Jolteon) lv 34
Gyuuta (Tauros) lv 35
Romotan (Poliwrath) lv 36
Konaan (Nidoking) lv 35

I of course get hopelessly lost in the fence maze. Why's this here anyway? Why would anyone build this random maze of feces in the middle of nowhere? Anyway, i do happen to stumble upon a patch of grass, where i catch a Pidgey and nickname it Vlieger. I walk around aimlessly a while more until i finally manage to find an exit onto the piers of Route 12. This is a nice seaside locale perfect for fishing, and a guy even hands me his Super Rod. I fail to catch anything though, so i just beat up all the trainers here and proceed north. I once again stumble into the sleeping Snorlax here, but this time i do have a flute to wake him up. I catch the guy in a single Great Ball, and bestow upon him the nickname Hugo.

Since i've got nothing more to explore in this region, i opt to fly around a bit and try out my new Super Rod in various places. I manage to net Nyoro the Poliwag in my hometown of Pallet, Hentai the Tentacool in Viridian, Oyster the Shellder in Vermillion and Soema the Slowpoke in Celadon. I think i'll now check whether the road to Tokyo is finally open. It's not, but the guard notices the lemonade in my backpack, so i use it to bribe him and gain access to the city. Place is overrun by Team Rocket; i should probably do something about that. First though, i decide to check out the town's gym, but i find that there are two gym buildings here. One of them is blocked off by Team Rocket, so i head into the other. Turns out this gym is no longer official; it's the other one i'll need to beat to get the badge. I still beat up every trainer here though; while i'm doing so, Poppy evolves into Pidgeot, meaning my entire squad is now in their final form. After i've beaten them all to a pulp, they reward me with one of two pokemon: Hitmonchan or Hitmonlee. I choose the lee, and name him Samu.

Now it's time to take on Team Rocket though. I learn from people around town that they've taken over the Silph Co building, as they always do. Wait, do they always do that? anyway, i head in there and beat up some grunts until i find the card key that allows me full access to the building. I drive the rockets out of the lower floors, but then i decide to call it a day.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My current team:

Fushi (Venusaur) lv 37
Buizari (Jolteon) lv 37
Konaan (Nidoking) lv 37
Romotan (Poliwrath) lv 38
Poppy (Pidgeot) lv 38
Gyuuta (Tauros) lv 38

As i make my way through the building and drive Team Rocket from the upper floors, i run into that dungbeetle Ben. Guy doesn't even lift a finger to help fight these bastards, but he decides instead to waste my time with a battle. Whatever, i send out Buizari and he sends out Pidgeot. One Thunderbolt gets the kill, and next is Exeggcute. I swap to Poppy for this one and hit a Fly that misses out on the OHKO, but Ben just uses a Super Potion for some reason so my following Wing Attack finishes it. For the Gyarados that comes after, Buizari comes back and a single Thunderbolt does it in. It's now Alakazam time; that job goes to Gyuuta. Strength gets the crit and the OHKO, meaning Ben only has his Charizard left. I send out Romotan to finish things, and two Surfs later, victory is mine.

After Ben fucks off, an onlooker decides to show his gratitude for my Team Rocket takedown and hands me his Lapras, which i nickname Fune. I press on a little further, when i once again come face to face with the big bad: Giovanni. When i tell him to fuck off and leave these poor salarymen alone, he decides to fight me and sends out his Nidorino. I one-up him and send out my Nidoking, and a single Earthquake destroys the lesser Nido. Kangaskhan is next and i decide to give Gyuuta this experience; two Strengths later and this mother and child are in the ground. after this, Giovanni sends out his Rhyhorn and i send out Fushi and clear it up with one Razor Leaf. (i actually miss two first, but Giovanni just goes for Guard Spec and misses a Tail Whip.) Last is Nidoqueen, so i send out the king to face the queen. Two quakes later, victory is mine. As thanks for savng his company, the president of Silph hands me the greatest prize of all: a Master Ball.

That concludes my business in Silph, so i guess i'll go and challenge this city's official gym now. This is a psychic gym and i have 3 mons that are weak to that type, so Fushi, Romotan and Konaan will be sitting this one out. Instead, i'm taking Hentai the Tentacool, Niger the Spearow an Kyne the Pidgey, as death fodder. The gym puzzle here revolves around using teleporter pads akin to the ones in Silph Co to make your way to the leader. It takes a while, but eventually i navigate this maze and make my way to Sabrina to challenge her to a fight. She leads with her Kadabra and i with Gyuuta. A single Strength kills my foe, and next is Mr. Mime. I decide to give this job to Buizari, whose Thunderbolts two-shot while he tanks a weak Doubleslap. We're now up against Venomoth, which is not a psychic type, but whatever. I send out Poppy for this job and OHKO with Fly, so now Sabrina is down to her ace, Alakazam. Gyuuta comes back out, but Zam manages to get a Reflect up, which means Strength is just a three-shot. He decides to immediately Recover, but Gyuuta crits right through the Reflect and gets the OHKO. What an absolute beast.

5 badges in hand, but that's about to become even more. I think i'm now strong enough to take on the gym in Fuchsia too, so i fly over and challenge it. This is a poison gym, so no one will have to sit this one out. The puzzle here revolves around navigating around invisible walls, which is a challenge considering how i tend to get lost everywhere, but eventually i manage to make my way to Koga. He leads with his Koffing and i with Konaan. Konaan's earthquakes proceed to one-shot both of his Koffings and his Muk, but Weezing survives and explodes on me. That only brings me to the yellow though, so victory is mine; Konaan truly is the MVP of this journey.

With 6 badges in hand, i can now use Surf outside of battle, but instead i decide to call it a day.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My current team:

Buizari (Jolteon) lv 40
Fushi (Venusaur) lv 40
Poppy (Pidgeot) lv 40
Gyuuta (Tauros) lv 41
Romotan (Poliwrath) lv 40
Konaan (Nidoking) lv 41

Time to explore the seas using my newfound ability to Surf outside of battle. I first surf east of Rock Tunnel, where i stumble upon an abandoned power plant. I of course want to see what's inside, so i head in and catch myself a Pikachu, which i nickname Arme Nana. I press on through the ruins, but all i find is an ugly electric chicken, so i head back out. I decide to fly to Fuchsia, fish up a Horsea in the seas down south, name it Umi no Uma and set sail. It takes a while before i reach anything of note, but eventually i stumble upon some small islands, so i land and throw out my rod once more. This time i net a Staryu, which i name Kasumi. I then decide to go and explore the caves on these islands, which was probably a bad idea; i of course end up hopelessly lost. I do get something out of it though: a Seel, which i nickname Zeeziggy. I also find a big frozen chicken, but it's ugly so i ignore it.

Eventually, after what feels like days, i reach the other end of the cave system and sail onward to the west. Not much to report here before i reach Cinnabar Island, where i once again throw out my rod, catching a Shellder this time. I'll name it George. This is the town where the guy from the museum said i can revive my fossils, so i bring my old amber and helix fossil to the lab, where they ret revived into Kaisama the Omanyte and Furuitori the Aerodactyl. That concludes my business in the lab, and the town's gym is closed so i guess i'll go and explore the seas between here and Pallet now. On the way, i find an island with a patch of grass, but all i find there is a Rattata, which i catch and nickname Skeever. Once i reach Pallet Town, i head home and call it a day.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My current team:

Romotan (Poliwrath) lv 42
Poppy (Pidgeot) lv 42
Gyuuta (Tauros) lv 42
Konaan (Nidoking) lv 42
Buizari (Jolteon) lv 43
Fushi (Venusaur) lv 43

Think i'll fly back to Cinnabar now to see if the gym's open. Nope, still closed. There's an interesting-looking ruined building there to explore though; i head inside and catch Beton the Grimer. There's a bunch of ancient journals here too, but i don't really have any interest in what they say. What is interesting though is the key i find on the lower floor. I have some vague recollection of finding the key to the Cinnabar gym in a burnt-out mansion, so i head out and try the key on he gym, and it actually works. Turns out these guys were just locked in here for some reason. Time to challenge this gym, i guess. This is a fire-type gym, so Fushi will be sitting this one out. Instead, we will be joined by Skeever the Rattata, as death fodder. There's no puzzle here, i just need to beat up all the gym trainers. There's weird machines in the corners with questions on them, but i don't trust them and just fight the trainers. After i massacre them all, i find myself face to face with the gym leader, Blaine. He leads with his Growlithe and i with Romotan. Romotan surfs down the Growlithe and the Ponyta that follows, but after that Blaine's Rapidash survives a hit in the red. This means i get hit with a Growl before it goes down. I opt not to switch out against the Arcanine despite him lowering the offensive stat i don't use, and Blaine uses a super potion at full health while i surf him to the yellow. The next turn, Take Down does a pretty pathetic amount of damage as one final surf ends things and gets me my seventh badge.

That means i only have to collect one more badge before they let me challenge the elite four, but i've nowhere left to explore. So i just head to the abandoned gym building in Viridian to see if that's in business again, and i find they're actually taking challengers. This is a ground gym, so Buizari will be sitting this one out. Instead, we will again be joined by Skeever, as death fodder. The puzzle here revolves around the same spinning floor tiles as i saw in Team Rocket's hideout in Celadon; a bit suspicious to see that same tech being used. When i make my way to the gym leader, those suspicions are confirmed: this gym is actually being led by Giovanni. He tells me he's hiding out here while rebuilding Team Rocket, so i guess there's now two reasons to beat the shit out of him. I send out Romotan and he responds by sending out his Rhyhorn. Romotan proceeds to one-shot Giovanni's Rhyhorn, Dugtrio, Nidoking and Rhydon with Surf, though the kill on Nidoking was a crit. Nidoqueen did manage to survive and get a Body Slam off, but i tanked that easily and killed it.

After this humiliating defeat, Giovanni gives me the badge and vows to disband Team Rocket forever. I have a feeling i'm still gonna see them again, but it's good that they have been dealt with for now. I think it's thus time to call it a day.

As i make my way up route 22 towards the pokemon league, i run into that asshat Ben again. Guy's apparently also collected 8 badges, an now he wants to see which of us is strongest. He sends out his Pidgeot and i lead with Buizari. One Thunderbolt clears things up, and next is Rhyhorn, who dies to Fushi's Razor Leaf. Against Ben's Exeggcute, i bring Poppy in; Fly doesn't get the one-shot, but i just kill him the next turn. We're now up against Gyarados, so Buizari comes back and blasts it with Thunderbolt. Now it's Alakazam time, so it's Gyuuta time. Psybeam does over half to me though, and my Strength doesn't one-shot, so i have to switch. I bring Poppy in on a Reflect, but said reflect causes my wing attack not to kill as Zam hits a strong Psychic. I have to switch again, to Buizari. Zam uses Recover to bring himself out of the red, but it only takes two Thunderbolts to kill him as he goes for another reflect. Last is Charizard, so i send out Romotan and two-shot it with Surf.

That was close, but we made it. I make my way past the badge check gates, catching Breeder the Ditto along the way. I proceed into victory road, the final challenge before the league. I immediately get assaulted by a wild Machop though, so i defend myself by flinging my Master Ball its way. It shall be nicknamed Ricky. I eventually reach the other end and lay my eyes on the Indigo Plateau, but i don't feel that my team is currently adequate to take on this challenge. So instead i do some training. After a while, i decide to call it a day.
