Hi folks! It's possible you were following chatter in the Art Gallery thread or maybe you saw our anniversary event from February, but if not, we (WW and AG) are excited to be running another teamup event this summer! This time, we'll be running a minibang, which is basically a fun collaborative event where an author and an artist will be paired together for an exciting multimedia teamup.

Due to the timing of Art Fight for artists and Workshop's Fall Writing Contest, we're planning on having a traditional bang--which is to say, writers will be in the hotseat first, and draft out a short story. Then, while they finalize things, an artist will be paired with that story and will make some sickass art for it! Wins all around.

There's a lot of community interest in this, and it looks like a lot of folks on the AG side have participated in bangs before and are excited to jump in. That being said, I wanted to poll the audience real quick on some nuances:
  • [All] What theme suggestion would you like for this year's minibang?! Bear in mind that we will be asking all participants to focus their work on the Pokemon fandom. Similar to the Shipping Contest, you may submit one theme in this thread, and then we'll vote on submitted themes and pick the most popular one for this year's event!
    • Please keep themes flexible/general.
    • Please submit your theme in bold text with something like "this is my theme suggestion" so I know to add it to the poll ^^'
  • [All] What should this event be called? Bulbabang? WWAG? :lapras: please save me
  • [Writers] For the writing portion, we are considering a recommended wordcount of 1k-4k, to give artists something to work off of, without giving them tooooo much to read. This range is set somewhat arbitrarily, so if you have a pressing desire for higher or lower, please discuss!
  • [Writers] I am considering making this a Roundtable as well, so writers can read up on each other's work while artists are off doing their thing. Is that something you would be interested in participating in? (Minibang participation would not require Roundtable participation; it'd be a fun extra)

My theme suggestion would be everyday life with Pokemon. I always liked depictions of people working regular jobs (ie, not revolving around Pokemon) with Pokemon aiding them, though it can be interpreted in any broader way too (for example, could imagine how life would be in our world if Pokemon were real).
 
Theme: I also like 'everyday life with Pokemon' :skiploom:
BulbaBang is such a fun name, I'm all for it!
I'm Words Georg, so while I would like a bit of an upper range, I think it might be a fun challenge to keep things shorter; besides, it's easier on our hardworking artists that way, right!?
A Roundtable would be fun, IMHO. A nice way to make this a bit more interactive; who doesn't love sharing work with others, right? :yay:

Don't have much of an idea for any theme unfortunately, i do like the name of BulbaBang much like everyone else though! but i did wanna jump in and say i am very excited for this event though! and cannot wait to participate in it (most likely as an artist) im really excited to see what everyone creates both on the writer and artist sides!
 
I, too, love BulbaBang!

My theme suggestion: Legendary. Whether it be a Legendary Pokémon (because there are lots of those) or a legendary trainer like Red or a Champion in their full legendary glory, up to you to interpret as the creator :-)
 
Thank you for the linked explanation. I saw the chatter in the WW chat, but I had never heard of a bang before in my life and context clues can only do so much. :confused:
Theme idea: Lost
Could be used for characters getting literally lost while traveling a la anime episode, characters being metaphorically lost, a place that's been lost/forgotten, etc.

RE: wordcount - That seems like a reasonable amount to me.
RE: roundtable - Yes, would very much like an optional roundtable!

I also have a couple questions!
-Could someone sign up as both an artist and a writer, or do we need to pick one?
-Can artists put in general requests for assignments? Mainly I'm thinking "not M-rated" and "not romance" might be good options? Neither this forum nor me is ready for the train wreck that would result from me trying to draw people kissing.
 
i don't have any theme ideas off the top of my head, but seconding the "friendship" suggestion, especially with this being a collab event.
my one question is, what happens if the number of artists and writers who sign up don't match? e.g. if there end up being more writers than artists, will some artists have to make multiple artworks?

This sounds very fun! Could you give me like a 3-5 word version of this theme? I want to make sure I'm representing your idea correctly on the poll.

You can definitely do both! You won't be assigned to yourself ofc but no restrictions otherwise.

Yes, we're still working on the pair assignment details, but artists can definitely have vetos. Loosely, I think it'll actually go something like
  • artists give all their vetos (no romance, no mechas, whatever) in private
  • writers provide a short blurb of their story + indicate if any of their stories match the pool of vetos
  • artists are given 2-3 blurbs (that do not contain their vetos) and may choose their story based off of that!

I think that would be the case. If it ends up being waaaaay mismatched, we may ask which authors are interested in going in a round 2. My read of this was that it seemed a little restrictive to have capped signups (i.e. 10 authors and 10 artists sign up; no one else can sign up once capped; if anyone drops, rip), since we're rather small and won't run this as often, so folks who miss out will be out for a while. Hopefully this doesn't end up too crazy but I believe in us!! (open to any concerns you might have with this process tho)

That's also a good point! Admittedly some fics might manage to be entirely romance, or the romance author was reaaaally hoping for some shipping art, or maybe someone is vetoing reading heavy depictions of depression for personal reasons--we do want to make sure artists are as comfortable as possible with their pair, so we're hoping to matchmake around vetos just in case.

I hadn't thought about it in terms of writing moments for artists. (speaking of romance and mechas, my ongoing fic has two of the pilots briefly dance inside a hangar)

That's...basically the two types of potential situations I was concerned about, yeah. (sweats) Sorry for whining, but thank you for understanding. I'd want to do the best I can with whatever story I'd be assigned, and cherry-picking around the obvious story focus because it's something I can't do didn't seem like it would be fair to the author, especially if there are other artists available who would enjoy it and do it well.

True, I do think that artists providing lists of things they are uncomfortable with is a good idea, but also, both the fic and the drawing would have to fit the theme. And I know that romance and mecha can be written into anything but, for example, if the theme is "friendship", a purely romance fic/illustration wouldn't really fit it to begin with.
