It bothers me how the number of legendary pokemon in each generation keeps increasing. What bothers me even more is the increased number of Nintendo event exclusive pokemon that come with this growing number...

ITG = introduced the generation (in % of new pokemon)
PLT = legendaries Cumulative at the time (in % of total pokemon)

Gen I had only 5: 3 legendary birds, Mewtwo and Mew. Mew, when pokemon was first released in Japan, was mostly unknown to even exist in the game's programing (according to bulbapedia)
* 5, 3.33% ITG, 3.33% PLT

Gen II: 3 Beasts, 2 new birds, and Celebi. Celibi is Insanely hard to get outta Japan without cheating, obtaining starts to get rediculus...
* 6, 6.00% ITG, 4.38% PLT

Gen III: 3 Regis, 3 Weather, 2 Eon(?), Jirachi (possible only for a limited time only) and Deoxys (Nintendo event...).
*10 (Two trios? really?), 7.41% ITG, 5.44% PLT

Gen IV: 3 Lake, 3 Dragon, 2 "lunar", Manaphy, Phione, Regigigas, Heatran, Shaymin, Arceus
*15 (C'mon...), 14.01% ITG, 7.30% PLT

Crunching the numbers it seems rediculus that for every 7 new pokemon in Gen IV there is 1 legendary... If trends follow anything like this we will have so many "legendaries" we won't know what to do with.

Legendaries are even starting to get redundant... Mew was supposed to be the descendant of all Pokemon now they have to ret-con it so arceus is the maker of all. How are they gonna try and top legendaries next? how can they?

"Gotta catch 'em all" gets exceedingly difficult with the abundance of event exclusive Pokemon that are hardly obtainable by all...

Anyways thats my rant...

The way I see it, it's not the number of legendaries that's the issue. It's more to do with the way they butcher their treatment in the anime films, by putting lots of them in the same film at the same time. For instance, cramming five or so legendaries into Movie 12 was just DO NOT WANT. Heatran should've been just left to a lesser role in the main anime or something, as should have Regigigas in Movie 11. And to think, neither Groudon nor Kyogre got a good film look-in...

Also, that infernal tagline hasn't been used in that capacity since Generation II/very early Generation III, so I don't see how it's particularly relevant.

I think there's too many. They should at least come up with more epic legendaries that are clearly more powerful and on a different level...such as Arceus.

I completely agree that there are too many legendaries. We get more and more every generation; pretty soon we'll have so many that it will defeat the purpose of them being "legendary." I think 3-5 is enough per generation.

Considering there are hundreds of myths including gods, mythical creatures, etc. in the real world, I don't see it as being too much Legendary Pokemon

Gen V should have 4-6 leg. And OVER 200! new normal mons. A trio, Pair set, and Some event one. 3rd ver would use former event.

as long as they have a cool story attached to it, I'm ok with it. And trio's should ahve different types (unlike the lake trio >:-| grrr )

I don't mind that we get legendaries in every generation but I don't wanna see tons of them introduced in the same generation. Heatran, Regigigas and perhaps Cresselia could have been saved for the next generation. It's not just fun to hunt for so many legendaries in one game.

I don't think there are enough legendaries. There should be at least twice as many.

Too many legendaries is right. I think they kind of lose their cool status when theres all these other ones to catch/compare to.

You should make this a poll, with too many legendaries, just enough, or not enough as the options.

I agree that there are too many legendaries. Gen III started off the adding in too many legendaries pattern, but Gen IV made that even worse. All of the new trios (Regis, Lake) and the mini legendaries (Latis, land Shaymin) kind of weakened the idea of what a legendary is.

At the current rate, there will be 22 or 23 legendaries next generation. I assume it will slow down, however.

I agree there are too many. Way too many. It robs the existing legendaries of their importance, it creates conflicting lore, and frankly, most of their designs suck. They need to focus on making only a handful of legendaries, make them look cool, and give them interesting stories and a feel of power to them. Really they only need a trio, a superpower, a super rare event Pokémon, and a unique wildcard or two.

No way, the original regi's , without regigias, were the essence of a legendary if you ask me. Except for like two people in pacifidolog (and they do it very riddle like), no one ever talks about them. They are very well hidden. Even when you come to the secret place left from pacifidolog (I only found out about it because a friend of mine got it), you have to decode the braille, which sucks if you;ve thrown out the booklet. You need two hard to get pokémon before you can get them, and after you did all that, you still have to find them, solve the (Easy[exept regice]) puzzles in their chamber and battle them. If all legendaries were like them, and thus really "legendary", they can make 20 more for my part!

Ok but consider the thousands of religions, people and nationalities the number of gods is still relitivly small...

possibly sensitive and maybe wrong example so i'll put it in a spoiler box. It may seem silly to some but DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE NOT SURE IF THIS WILL BOTHER YOU

Ok so there are tons of nationalities that practice say Presbiterianism (sp?) but the only figures that are considered "Gods" are God himself and to a lesser extent Jesus, Other religions think of them as the same entity, others believe Mary is fairly Holy-god like and there are others like Ancient Greek that too have many "Gods" (Hercules, Zeus, Hera, etc.) but there are still thousands of normal people/notable figures that are NOT Gods/mythical/legendary

can't be too careful...

I don't think so. In Gen. I there was a perfect amount, we had the trio and Mew and Mewtwo, and Arcanine... (kidding).

In Generation III there started to be a bit much, breaking the chain with the trio's (Not having standard typings), and having 4 other legends.

Then there was Generation IV. Best Generation for Uber Battlers. They went completely overboard with the legends.

So in a way yeah, there are way to many legendaries now. But it does all work out in the tiers.

I understand that, but in terms of gameplay, you could consider it being that there are too many legendaries. I don't mind, but it's hard collecting when you get them being spread out over several games.

On the plus side, more legendaries means online battles will have more variety. When people fight with only top-tiered Pokémon, maybe now there will be 20-25 of them instead of 15! Yay!
