Programing block ends 11-year run with Naruto as only anime on schedule

America's Cartoon Network has reportedly revealed at Georgia's Anime Weekend Atlanta convention this morning that it will end its Toonami programming block tonight after 11 years. The official announcement will be made during tonight's final run, with an "important message" during the 10:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. ET/PT timeslot. Naruto has been the only Japanese series in this Saturday evening block recently, but Toonami used to host a variety of Japanese-animated programs when it began as a weekday afternoon block in 1997. Among those titles were Voltron, Robotech, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, Ronin Warriors, G-Force: Guardians of Space, Blue Submarine No. 6, Tenchi Muyo!, Cardcaptors, Zoids, .hack//SIGN, Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, The Big O, Outlaw Star, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Cyborg 009, Duel Masters, Astro Boy, Gundam, Rave Master, Zatch Bell, One Piece, Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, Pokémon, MÄR, The Prince of Tennis, Megaman Star Force, Bakugan Battle Brawlers, and Blue Dragon. The Toonami Jetstream online streaming service will reportedly still continue, and Cartoon Network is working to import the Japanese-animated Demashitaa! Powerpuff Girls Z spinoff that is based on its own Powerpuff Girls series.

Two episode of Naruto are currently scheduled for tonight at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. The 2002 live-action Spider-Man film will run instead of Toonami on September 27, although most television listings have not been updated yet. Batman: Gotham Knight, this summer's Japanese-animated video tie-in to The Dark Knight film, will then run on October 4 at 8:00 p.m. After Batman: Gotham Knight, an episode of Naruto, "Powerful Helper," will run at 9:30 p.m., but there are no other episodes scheduled yet.

Toonami has been dead ever since they changed it to the Naruto Hour.

...The only bad thing about this is One Piece is homeless on TV now.

This totally sucks. I've been watching that program for as long as I can remember, and have to give all credit to that particular program for getting me into anime in the first place.

What's worst, I don't have any cable because of a stupid wind storm, and I cannot watch the final program....fing lame.

Well, that's depressing. :bawling:
I used to watch Toonami all the time. I can remember watching the Midnight Run just to catch Sailor Moon and various other good stuff. And then there was a time where they ran Beast Wars in the afternoon... All good things must come to an end, I guess.

FUCK. I can't believe I'm watching Naruto in order to keep vigil over my childhood.

EDIT: HE JUST CALLED NARUTO THE BEST ACTION SHOW AROUND! This is not the TOM I knew.

Truthfully, I never thought this day would come officially, but to me, Toonami's been dead ever since Naruto murdered it. Still, I'm still sad to see it end, especially since I remember watching it when I was young, and it started my love for animes.

NOOOOOOOO! Don't tell me what time is saying, it's bad enough I can't even watch it, now ur just teasing.j/k.

No matter what anybody thinks of Naruto, toonami is just one of those things that should stay around for a long time, longer than it has. I almost wish it could have been around long enough for my future kids to watch, but that would be too much to ask for.

A long time ago, I watched Toonami for some anime I used to know. I seem to recall a lot of the Transformers animes being there, too, but I didn't see too many of them.

And in his molten pits, Moltar is laughing. But deep down, he died a little.

See ya, space cowboy.

Aren't they moving the anime to the Adult Swim block now? (Where the young boys who only want the action and epic will be exposed to the prons and politics </3)

And I don't get the "Naruto murdered it" thing. It's a channel block. DO YOU SEE NINJITSUWHATEVERCHAKRA IN THE SPACE PROBES DON'T REMEMBER WHAT THAT TOONAMI TAKES PLACE IN: NO, IT CHANGED ON IT'S OWN ACCORD.

But yeah I shall wry and cly nao. ;-;

I had no idea it was ending tonight, but I decided to watch to pass the time while my hard drive was being formatted.

In a way, I'm glad I got to see it all come to an end. In the time when I waned in and out of cable, Toonami would be the one thing I'd make sure to never miss. (We trialed packages so sometimes we had premium channels and then we went back to basic as trials expired) I'd try to watch at a friends house to stay up to date on Zoids. Man, I could never completely finish the series, but part of the fun was trying to figure out what series I was on since they were running two side by side.

The weekday lineup stuff was the best, but again I never had the time to watch it which made it more of a treat when I could catch it. Like everyone's said, the recent stuff has been so condensed (ie: Naruto block) that I never saw Toonami as programming block anymore, so I'm not too disappointed at the loss.

Still.. Hate to see tom go, even if they Narutofied his armor.

After I saw the ending of Toonami tonight, I went on Youtube and typed in Toonami, just to watch some of the past Toms. I saw the Intruder special, and a whole lot of other vids. Man, did that bring back good memories

I had no clue about this and was caught totally off-guard when I saw the farwell bump. Sure, it's just a channel block, but it's always a bit dissapointing to see things that have been around since one's childhood die (even though I was never a big Toonami viewer).

when you look at it so many animes got so famous because of toonami and to see it go it will make me cry when ever i look at my dbz seasons 1-3 dvds but the tears wont be from sadness they will be from joy toonami is the reason im an anime fan so i say you will be remembered tom and thanks for helping me become who i am today

No, Adult Swim is scuttling its anime as well. They moved the Adult Swim anime to the early morning graveyard slot.

What the hell? :conangry:I can't believe it! They are pulling the plug on Toonami?! They are evil! I watched Toonami ever since Tom had a gut.

"I love this job."
My favorite catch-phrase...

I was never a big Toonami watcher, but it was a nice constant to remind me of when I was younger.

Sailor Moon and TOM (You gotta love Steve Blum) are what I'll remember best. As well as that Intruder special. That kicked ass.

Loved the Bebop reference. It's sad that the goodbye was the first time in years it actually felt like Toonami had its soul back.

This sucks to extreme levels of excitement. I'm just so, so, so disappointed in Cartoon Network as a whole.

;o; Aww, farewell Toonami. You shall be missed. I was a big fan of it during the 90's and then my inpiration to watch on dwindled away sometime ago. I shall miss the great shows that aired there. Tenchi Muyo, Sailor Moon, Rurouni Kenshin, etc. Toonami also shaped the anime fan I am, along with the International Channel.

-goes to re-watch the Toonami Intruder special-
