what are your top 5 favourite battles in the history of the anime?

Mine:

1. Ash Vs Brandon III
2. Ash s Paul (Sinnoh League)
3. Ash vs Gary (Johto League)
4. Ash vs Drake (Orange Islands)
5. Ash vs Spencer
 
Here are my top 5 favourite battles.

Ash vs. Paul (Sinnoh League)
Ash vs. Tobias (Do I need to explain why?)
Ash vs. Gary (Johto League)
Ash vs. Tyson/Harrison(Hoenn/Johto League)
Ash vs. Iris (2nd battle)
Ash vs. Brandon (Final Battle)
 
I'm going to assume Contest battles count. :p
1. Ash vs Paul (Sinnoh League)
2. Ash vs Tobias (yes, I actually anjoyed this battle)
3. May vs Drew (Kanto GF)
4. Dawn vs Ursula (Playing the Performance Encore!)
5. Ash vs Volkner

Ash Vs. Maylene
Ash Vs. Katie (Hoenn league)
Ash Vs Paul (Sinnoh league)

Three great battles for Ash where strategy and skill are involved, well animated battles too.

May:

May Vs. Drew (Kanto GF)
May Vs. Grace (Beautifly Vs. Medicham)
May Vs. Harley (first time)

Probably the 3 most memorable May contest battles.

Dawn:

Dawn Vs. Zoey (Sinnoh GF)
Dawn Vs. May
Dawn Vs. Ursula Pt. II

Again, the Zoey match was amazing, the Ursula second match was the best, and Dawn Vs. May was pretty good

Misty:

Misty Vs. Ash Cerulean
Misty Vs. Ash for Totodile
Uh....Psyduck Vs. everyone?

Not much to say for Misty, most of her matches were just short comedy-esque matches. I guess I liked those 3.

Brock:

Brock/Ash Vs. TR Pewter Gym
Brock/Holly in Tag battle tournament
Brock vs. Molly Movie 3

Yeah, again since Brock hardly battles not much to say. But those are the 3 most notable.

This is going to be hard for me to decide for some of them.

1. Ash vs. Paul -the best rivalry ends with the most epic battle the anime has ever seen.
2. Ash vs. Gary -the long awaited final battle between these two was an event for the ages. It shall be long remembered as being legendary.
3. Ash vs. Tobias -a lot of people seem to hate this guy for taking Ash's victory from him, but I see a deeper purpose. This was the battle that truly showed Ash's potential, that he has what it takes to win a tournament, and also, for the first time, Ash's pokemon beat not one, but two legends. (Well, the second is technically a tie, but to me it still counts)
4. Ash vs. Brandon, third try -the final Frontier Brain was one of Ash's most difficult challenges, having been defeated twice before, although one of those times really shouldn't count, as it technically was not him trying to fight Brandon. This one gains extra points for the reunion of what remains of Ash's original crew. Again, this really shows Ash's potential as a high class trainer, but not as much as the previous one.
5. Ash vs. Noland -the battle that changed the stakes forever. True, Noland didn't own Articuno, but now that legends were fair game, a whole new level of challenge was opened, one that Ash faced head on and succeeded. This cemented Ash's position as a great trainer to me.

Yeah, both of the most prevalent rivals of Ash, and every time he managed to defeat a legend. As for the order, that is just how I feel it should go. There are other significant battles, but since I was limited to five, this is what I went with. I will agree Contests should have their own list, but separate from the other battles. I feel it isn't fair to compare them since they're trying to be something different. They have their own appeal. If I must include Contests, then....

1. Zoey vs. Nando -I will agree with a lot of people that this particular battle was just awesome to watch. The clashing attacks, the combinations, the fury. This may not have been the climax of the Grand Festival, but it was just done better.
2. May vs. Drew (Kanto GF)- Yet again, a great rivalry ends with a great battle.
3. Dawn vs. Zoey (Sinnoh GF) -Same reason, but I didn't like this rivalry as much as the previous one. Admittedly, though, these two Contest battles scored fairly equally to me.
4. May vs. Harley (the first one) -I was about to just say any of their contest battles, since they're all interesting, but I decided, I should pick the one that is the best, and to me, it is the first, simply because this set the tone for which all of their subsequent encounters would take. This is perhaps the most interesting rival the Contests ever produced, and every time he pops up, it'll sure to be a good time.
5. Dawn vs. Ursula (the second one) -Again, another interesting rival, just as manipulative as Harley. This particular one that showed just how manipulative she is, using Dawn's own personal fears against her. (Harley started out this way, so he scored higher)
 
1) Ash vs. Paul in the Sinnoh league - best battle EVER by a long stretch.
2) Ash vs. Conway in the Sinnoh league. What can I say? I love Conway!
3) Paul and Ash vs. Team Rocket. Ash and Brock really battle well together. I loved this battle.
4) Ash vs. Brock, in the first gym battle. Well, it was Ash's first gym battle. It means something.
5) Ash vs. Tobias. Hax battle, but really was good. I loved seeing Ash's old pokemon, especially Sceptile - and he defeated two legendaries!

Honouable mention goes to Forrest vs Nurse Joy
 
Remember the episode where Misty battled that Poliwrath trainer, i think it was called Hook, line and stinker. That was a good one. Plus the whirl cup battles.

Anyway, i made a mistake. I should have explained it better, i meant to say your 5 favourite Ash battles ever.

These are the main one's I thought were just awesome! Really, I loved all of Ash's gym battle's/league battle's, so it is hard to choose between any of them in the top five.
