why do you lock threads when you can delete them and not make the forums slower? just curious.

Exactly. They're deleted. Not all threads that are locked should be deleted. Many can stay around, some have reasons for staying around even in their perma-locked state. And the load they put on our server is minimal at best...and with the new server, load is no issue anyway.
