trading from fire red

ok , iv currently completed the elite 4 and island task on fire red , so now im able to trade to ruby sapphire, only thing is when i go to trade i have to use the data cable from my gba "sein astho it doesn't fit in my ds" to my game cube, and nothing happens it just says please wait press b to cancel :S

any ideas why? do i have to complete sapphire before i can trade ?

i was hoping to be able to trade near enough straight away then i could start with my lv 20 larvitar

or could it be the cable?, does it have to be the wireless adapter?
