Michael Bay's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen earned more than $55 million its first day, easily breaking the opening day record for a Wednesday release at the domestic box office.

The previous record-holder was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which grossed $44.2 million in its first day.

"Revenge of the Fallen," playing in more than 4,200 theaters in the U.S., has a strong shot at surpassing the $152.4 million earned by Spider-Man 2 in its first five days. That film opened on the same Wednesday in 2004. The 5-day record is held by The Dark Knight, which made $203.8 million its first five days last July.

The opening day haul in the U.S. included $16 million in midnight runs, the best run ever for a film released on a Wednesday. And it's the third-best of all time after The Dark Knight ($18.5 million) and Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith ($16.9 million).

Wish I could say I was surprised. Should be interesting to see how close it gets to Dark Knight.

Re: Transformers Breaks Wednesday Record with $55M

When I saw it in IMAX on Thursday, the theatre was pretty darned packed. I am not surprised at all to hear this news. (And I won't be surprised when Paramount greenlights a third movie because it's probably going to happen...)

The third movie will happen, no doubt about that, but Michael Bay wants to take time off from the Transformers franchise. He has estimated the release of Transformers 3 to be at or around July of 2012:

"I said I was taking off a year from Transformers. Paramount made a mistake in dating Transformers 3 - they asked me on the phone - I said yes to July 4 - but for 2012 - whoops! Not 2011!!! That would mean I would have to start prep in September. No way. My brain needs a break from fighting robots."

Re: Transformers Breaks Wednesday Record with $55M

I can't say as I blame him for wanting time off. Goodness knows, the entire cast is probably a little burned out on giant effing robots. I just hope when number three hits Bumblebee's voice will finally be fixed for good and all. That would make me a very happy femmebot.

Re: Transformers Breaks Wednesday Record with $55M

It's now the third biggest opening ever. Second biggest five day opening. $201.2 million, falling just shy of Dark Knight's $203.8 million. Also set a record for a June opening, an IMAX opening,

Re: Transformers Breaks Wednesday Record with $55M; Makes $201.2 million opening week

Best movie I've ever seen. Period.
The Fallen looks so cool! He's like a pharoh!
And, why does Starscream have all the symbols on him in this movie?

He carved tattoos onto himself after failing to save Cybertron by building a new All Spark.

I've ordered the novelization. I don't think the movie itself is worth spending a movie ticket's price on, so I'll wait until my brother buys the DVD and steal it from him. In the meantime, the novel will make me at least somewhat spoiler-proof.

The novel actually makes a lot more sense than the movie. They left out a lot of important explanations that made it into the novel, but not the movie.

Yeah, I'd say that all but guarantees a third installment in the franchise. The funny thing is I actually told Prime that I figured it would hit $200 million on the opening weekend. Maybe I should start playing lotto...

If you look at the other movies in the *yawn* box office, this left others in the dust *yawns once again*. I woke up at five and now its late. I need some sleep.
