Transparency in GIMP?

Ummm....
I recently downloaded GIMP on my PC, but I can't figure out how to add transparency to the background(for my sprites). Please help.
 
dude its easy just go to layer>transparency>Add Alpha channel.

the usin the wand tool click on ur sprite. it will then become fuzzy.
chose the eraser tool and erase everythin. hovever if done right ur sprite will be there and ur back ground will be a black and checkerboard (transparent) then just save it.
