Now with XY being not far into it's first season, I can't help but wish they would just put more effort in with developing characters and keep them as Ash's permanent traveling companions instead of constantly switching them. In my perfect scenario they would have kept Misty/May/Dawn, but I already quite like Serena and Clemont.

Would you prefer for Ash to keep changing travelling companions or should he just stick with the same companions and the writers put more effort into their development?

I'd like Serena to stick around for her and Ash's relationship to grow & deepen over time...

Unfortunately, the creative staff does not know how/is not allowed to have an actual romance, so little if anything will come of it :bawl:

Though I'm definitely okay with Clemet and Bonnie leaving at the end of the saga. I don't want what happened with Brock to happen to them and they'll probably have outlived their welcome like Iris & Cilan SO did by then.

That would be interesting. For the first time, just Ash and the female companion traveling to a new region.

I think it would be great for her to stick around. It seems like such a waste for them to give her a backstory of knowing Ash just to get rid of her when Kalos is done. She's also grown on me faster than the other female characters (apart from Misty of course).

I'd also prefer Brock over Clemont since Bonnie is annoying, but I don't see the writers bringing him back since that would take effort lol.

As if said before on this forum, characters can stay interesting over long periods of time if they're made interesting. Many people hate fillers so if you have the spotlight on 3 characters journos instead of just one, the episodes can be more meaningful and won't need boring fillers (Pokemon wanders off and gets lost, rest of the episode is spent finding them).

I prefur them to change since they get stale once in a while on a show like this. I'm pretty used to it by now.

I would prefer if we had stable cast where characters dont get constantly discarded into oblivion, continuing to explore new regions with Ash.

That moral values, adventure aspect and strong friendship this show promotes wont just stay on empty words with maintaining connection between friends acknowledging impact and importance they played in each other lives with lifepaths crossroading each other at times remembering on their past adventures and building on friendship,. Along with their dreams and personal desires being explored and focused upon acknowledging their existence, having them come back or stay and play prominent role helping to advance current plot and advance their own stories through it.

There is difference between innovating things in narration to keep things fresh and going overboard with it to the point of some formula turning into nightmare becoming predictable, stale and overused. Which is kinda true with constant cast replacing while burying previous creations like they never mattered.

It first happened with Misty being disappointing to see her leave and fade in abyss when there was left room to be done much more with her story. Like water master goal breaking new grounds from Whirl Cup introducing tournaments and new concept of battling for water trainers like underwater matches advancing it forward, try to become E4 member living up to idol Lorelei, learn how to bond on closer level with pokemon she specialize in to understand their hearts and weaknesses(manga did that pretty well with Suicune and Misty choosing her as partner), . Find out more about her past(like parents, why she fears bugs, learn how to utilize pokemon effectively like her Psyduck or growing to appreciate all pokemon regardless of their look, like Surskit which could likely cause turmoils and struggle inside character etc).

Potential which still exists ending with unresolved story with gym being used as plotline to remove her from cast filling in for sisters. With undefined future and no further progress ever happening. Missing vibrant dynamic and humor her funny outbursts, flirty nature and brash, feisty escapades brought to group.

Same thing happened with May being saddening to see her forever abandoned when there existed so many loose ends which could be focused on continuing to enjoy in her presence and interesting dynamic. Like open feuds she had with her rivals, quest of becoming top coordinator, to see her developing her own contest style and techniques becoming more skilled and creative coordinator. Try out new activities like pokeringer picking up ideas from there and utilizing it in her performance staying fresh and fun to follow thanks to new directions through which things could had been taken.

Dawn, Brock, Iris etc followed this pattern.

And now same thing could likely happen to Clemont, Bonnie and Serena leaving without ever getting chance to be more fleshed out, learn new things about them, see their effort and hard work paying of following them on screen coming closer toward their destination. And continuing to enjoy in their antics and enjoyable interactions they are capable of producing.

Which im not supportive of in slightest much rather wanting to see Kalos cast or "blonde brigade" as some like to call them not falling down in oblivion never to be seen again.
I mean why constantly go through all that work and trouble of introducing new companions when writers could just do continuation of current character stories?

At first i welcomed such idea with May quest as coordinator feeling like interesting and refreshing take on series and Dawn was acceptable too, but as time went on with character cycling being continued on this started to feel imo exaggerated losing original appeal it used to had. We constantly see characters come in,start getting developed with people just starting to like them and after some time ditched like trash, for what?

To end up with ton of previous companions being left to rot in past forgotten like they never existed.

I would much rather prefer if pokemon could change its already warn out concep and start doing more with those it had, giving them more depth and substance. I for once would welcome current XY cast for a change being kept or writers deciding to bring new life in previous companion bringing them back for continuation of their stories picking up from where they stopped(preferably Misty, but i would be open to any older companion) allowing us to see them developed to more significant degree gaining more depth and mystery, to see their backstories and personalities be explored to deeper level along with characters, their pokemon and plots which form story being taken to new directions being treated as continuation. Following more mature, en riched with new traits and experiences companion going on more demanding challenges.

Im sure most of us would want development of characters and pokemon coming of in more believable way, making anime more continuity based filled with stable cast and solid story? To follow unique characterization and characters which stand out on their own going through more substantial growth, explore on different facets of characterization, learn new things and develop forward in more complex way experiencing build up on his/her story by doing continuation of what has been established before.

But its kinda hard to expect seeing this show move forward instead of having messed up plot lacking continuity, inconsistent development and "status quo", when every time opportunity to do build up on already existing friendship Ash established with current companions and already developed story which could be carried over to next region taking things forward gets flushed down the toilet once characters gets replaced taking away from thrill of journey and opportunity to follow build up on already formed story?

When i take a look at other anime like One Piece,Naruto, DBZ back in day, Sailor Moon etc,etc which dont replace their main characters at all with writers gradually improving them opening new subplots when one part of story is over making them connected between themselves forming one large picture(bigger quest they need to accomplish).

I ask myself why pokemon doesn't follow their example doing balanced mix of old and new. Continuing to promote new games, but not forgeting about its roots and history. Keeping Ash travel companions people grew to like and cherish to see through sequels advancement of their current story, enjoy in their antics and dynamic personalities. See new things being done. I mean sure there are long running show which replace cast too like Bakugan or Inazuma Eleven go but not so excessively like pokemon does(far from it) and older ones are brought back to help push future storylines and get more development themselves not ending abandoned.

Its kinda depressing to think how by now already 8 travel companions ended replaced and that number will probably increase. Decreasing chances that we ever see them in person again, especially older ones like Misty(forgotten since 2005), May( since 2008), soon enough Dawn, Iris, Cilan and each and every wonderful character we grew to like, which has unanswered things and potential to be taken through bigger, more challenging steps and his quirks and fun personalities they have about themselves.

With anyone new who joins Ash on his journey(currently Bonnie, Clemont and Serena) from the looks of it being doomed to follow that same faith unfortunately. Unless writers change formula deciding to invest more in their already established and introduced in anime creations which i earnestly would like and want to happen , because current tactic is bad approach imo for many reasons.

I guessed you would feel the same as me since we both seem to always have the same opinion on the anime!

For me I see so much potential in Pokemon as a series but I feel like they are quite lazy when to comes to the anime and the games in some ways (Ni No Kuni leaves a lot to be desired).

As you said, Misty had her goal to become a water type master then just stopped to be a gym leader. Realistically I could see her staying at the gym for maybe one season while her sisters travelled, like Brock staying and being replaced by Tracy for a short time. But after that she should have joined up again.

I remember in an interview they stated that they reset Ash each region since new fans come along and old ones leave. If for example the people who are watching this season stop watching next season, it could actually benefit the series since new people may be compelled to watch old seasons if they find the characters interesting and more deep. If the new fans stop watching after a short period it obviously won't matter to them and the old fans will be happy since we get more engaging and deep character stories!

One thing about Serena that makes me wonder is if they will use her to bring back contests.Sshe has said she doesn't know what is for her since she hasn't done any gym battles yet, doesn't seem interested in Rhyhorn racing and hasn't done much else, I can't help but wonder if she will do contests.

I agree that Serena and Clemont will share the same fate but since they have been a bit more creative with the recent games, hopefully they will try something different with the anime as well.

Pretty much laziness and lack of incentive in breaking out mold and try different approach in pokemon anime would be reasoning behind current formula imo.

For example cases of laziness in writers rather resorting to replacing characters instead of putting more effort in their development and going deeper in introspection of his own motives, past and dreams can be noticed in quickly coming up with classic concept of "change of heart" with someone in last minute changing his dream. Like Brock deciding to become doctor near end of Sinnoh, Gary researcher etc.

Or just dump of character not finishing up what they started without any real closure. Like Max rotting at gym never getting chance to focus on his start of journey or by now unreasonable to expect promised battle v s Ash(which i would happily welcome).

Or Misty who was abruptly replaced going back to gym against her will making it seem like departure was temporary like you said. Sure in hosos she got some great growth but writers pretty much either forgot or purposely left main plots which formed story hanging in air(since she didn't changed her dreams of becoming water master taking over gym out of necessity/sisters incompetence expressing frustration) never clearing up if she will stay or leave at some point continuing to pursue dreams of becoming top water trainer(catch 22 situation). Still viable in sense of following footsteps of other leaders(like Wallace, Koga, Cilan etc) to become stronger ,reach new levels as expert passing further tasks on road of becoming master catching up to idol Prima(Lorelei).
Leaving her story untied.

Shame to see them dump every character after another, when arguably if writers kept traveling companions following Ash in new regions they could bring in longer run more benefit to marketing and promotion of pokemon name on global scale. What i mean with that is how that way aside from Ash viewers will follow other familiar faces with who they could identify pokemon franchise and series, stable group of companions which creates brand around themselves,. Someone to who they could relate and grow attached along with new generations of kids viewing them as representatives of regions they travel through showcasing new pokemon and game innovations by captures building on their teams, having older pookemon evolve or upgrade in newer ones(like mega evolution), try out new competitions and find way through which participation can help push dreams they follow etc.

Imo idea which is sustainable and could revitalize series by adding new unexpected twist and fresh angle to story would be in investing long term more in Ash and one stable set of companions, even bringing back previous popular and successful companions(Misty, May, Cilan etc come to mind)joining ash on various sections of his journey getting follow ups and deeper, more groundbreaking character growth. Instead of scrapping everything altogether starting from zero all over again with new generation and blank sheets.

I know i would be interested in some of them coming back for extended period of time serving as nice change of pace having already background behind them to gain more substantial changes to their story. Something we can't really expect from new characters who just began journey.

Which is where true beauty behind stable cast of characters which together explore world lies. Because with already established group of travelers which have some history and experience behind themselves there is set groundwork to do something new and exciting which you could never do with someone who goes from scratch. Actual build up being took through more requiring challenges , evolution of friendship taking their relationship to more profound level, exploration of his personality and various sides of which we may not been aware of since situation never called for that "other sides" of them being revealed until than(like facing again with fear and trauma they repressed like it was kinda case with redhead fear of Gyarados or seeing something which interests them not encountering it before bringing more complexity to character). Along with their careers and story being upgraded entering next stage of their development since basics and introduction points were already covered by than..

I still have hope that production staff will take in account benefit and potential behind more stable cast keeping Ash traveling companions for change investing further in their plots, interests and personalities. If possible starting with current group not abandoning all started work, character development and expansion of their characterization with Serena, Clemont and Bonnie being granted acces for contnuing past 6th generation gfaking them through more complex, meaningful growth expanding on what staff establish about them in Kalos. And not just stop on that , but create gateway to see characters from past we grew to like coming back with new life added to them through new outfits, change of style being updated, new pokemon, and new twists and plots to their storyline being taken in new/fresh directions , increasing anime continuity, reward older fans loyalty making them happy and give new kids chance to better understand past and get to know their characters sparking interest to stay tuned in for another generation.

By putting more effort in companions which showed to have requirements to bring necessary appeal and charisma to hook viewers on building on show continuity, more glued/cohesive storyline and better storytelling predispositions are set to create formula which could become appealing toward wider group of people(both new and older fans gaining their loyalty).
Long term speaking more viewers means more customers which watch show and buy merchandize products, which leads to increase of ratings and more money.Which is road to bigger, more lasting success imo.

Many things have changed by now, lot of past patterns were broken and direction in which pokemon anime is taken is slowly but surely inroducing different elewments in way how wilkl characters, plots and journey unfold out, So maybe current policy about Ash traveling companions and paying more respect to history and previous unfinished companions would change eventually too(because such fresh outpurs would imo increase people thril and interest for this show). Though im staying precacious with this statement.;-)

p.s. Good point about Serena, didn't thought about it before but in case Ruby, Sapphire remakes take place in 6th generation contests could likely get revisited with her chsracter being used for its promotion partially. Although i wouldn't mind if she gets different type of career to pursue, something which would set her apart from other girls giving us different unsight in someone journey and way of going forward. All part of soul searching and trying to find something she enjoys to do ensuring viable template for longher stay in next 7th gen with purpose of building up on by than started plots having way to see fruits of her labour done in here paying of in future.

If you look at it from a developmental point of view, May, Max and Dawn had a great deal of potential as characters. Contests were just as interesting as Ash's gym battles, if not more interesting due to the creativity like with moves such as "ice aqua jet". They could have kept contests interesting by adding new twists such as a certain league only allowing teams which would allow new character introductions. The contests also made May/Dawn feel like more than just a side character that takes the back seat compared to Ash, it made them seem just as important.

If they had kept May and Max, they could have waited several seasons then start to develop Max's relationship with Pokemon further and see him get his first Pokemon. There's also so many characters that have been introduced which could have travelled with Ash like Sakura or Ritchie instead of always introducing new characters.

I would happily see Serena do contests but from what I read in another thread she may be involved with Pokevision whatever that is. I feel like TPCI has been trying new things and putting more effort in with XY anime as well as the games. I hope it all doesn't go to waste.

The way they have it set up if for rotating cast. I don't mind that but sence they have so many characters why not rotate them. Well I miss Misty and May as much as next person honestly if Ash and Misty hadn't taken break from one another we either would have missed out on contestshipping or handymanshipping maybe even both if May was traveling with Drew. And we wouldn't have reason to peak into Kanto if Misty hadn't been their. And as much as loving Kalos I don't think it makes sence for the 3 to travel with Ash outside of Kalos esp sence Clemont is a gym leader. Could Serena possibly idk. Nor does it matter writers will do what they want anyway personally I don't want a new character. However i would enjoy it if they rotated in some of our old friends with the newer ones. I see no reason not to rotate the existing cast. I hope I made sense.

I would happily see Serena do contests but from what I read in another thread she may be involved with Pokevision whatever that is. I feel like TPCI has been trying new things and putting more effort in with XY anime as well as the games. I hope it all doesn't go to waste.

True, lot of this past characters imo had lot of viable potential and room to go forward with them in case they continued to accompany Ash.

To shorten things up;
Contest were definitely enjoyable addition to anime giving us look into someone growing and evolving as trainer from different point of view. Like mentioned earlier in case of May or Dawn being kept as traveling companions with certain tweaks such as contests following different set of rules(like new rating system and innovations to battle rounds). Exploring on whole contest master title Wallace was introduced with and what does it entail(since it seems to be higher posuition than top coordinator)etc.

In case May was for example kept past Hoenn i could seen her developing her own contest strategy and battle style, along with having to adapt to different environment, rules and tactics coordinators from DP use.
Being invaluable experience for May development since contests in DP are focused more on appeal rounds and how to execute techniques in most captivating, elegant manner. Like dressing ups, ribbons, ball capsules etc. Which was one of her flaws starting to realize this in Hoenn when relying too much on overpoweruing opponent pokemon through sheer strength rather than making performance to combine creativity and beauty with attack power which was especially important for Sinnoh contests.

Max in case of being kept could continue to grow under Ash wing as trainer learning how to become more creative trainer and establish close relationship with various pokemon starting to collect them and send home until he is able to use them for battles(he was especially good with psychic types). With Ash experience and maturity allowing to serve as mentor on his own journey when he grows up enough to become legal trainer.

Admittedly Misty unexplored goals offered even more fresh alternative to see someone grow forward and influence storyline in case writers kept her joining Ash in future regions too. Not just expansion from Whirl Cup introducing underwater battling, races, battles on dry land where you have to innovate etc testing your skills in utilizing water pokemon productively learning how to adjust to current situation and terrain using it to your advantage. But possibly creating arc in form of tests, mini tournaments and intensive training battling evaluators in vain of becoming E4 member apprentice getting noticed by them for her abilities which would arguably help push Ash story too(since E4 are one of steps he needs to beat to become master), learn secrets and origins of water pokemo(ie villains like Team Aqua/Magma in Hoenn created potential for her to play prominent role invoking rage and effort of stopping them in harnessing water pokemon for evil, in newer saga mega evolution concept offers room in realizing how to pull true power of water types on surface like Gyarados and learn to master their use through E4 Siebold presence partaking in tournaments organized by him to forge skills and make name for herself but eh).

With lot of them there existed/still exists lot of interesting ways and reasons which would justify further investment exploring more on their personality, past and unsolved flaws.

Making it all that more frustrating imo to see Ash constantly changing companions when there exist material to keep them growing forward. See them evolve as persons more, with interaction changing and going to different level developing new traits, skills and outlooks on things working toward their dreams by making more notable steps . Which would be more interesting and refreshing to see for a change, since with new characters there doesn't exist background, established relationships and groundwork to expand upon and inject more groundbreaking changes to their story.

As far as current Kalos cast goes they may not be my favorite traveling group, but i do enjoy in them. Especially Clemont and Bonnie presence being interested to see them continue onto 7th generation as inseparable duo which provides good humor and lively energy in cast. While with Serena it would be kinda cool to see her trying out various activities through Kalos series like racing, baking in trying to perfect herself as cook, become famous pokevision idol, coordinator etc.
Toward end of saga realizing what fulfills her as person the most with her working toiward that dream serving as substance warranting further stay past Kalos series starting to develop her dreams from there and onwards.

I would definitely like that pokemon anime finally has stable on going cast. Exploring world in Ash company as close group of friends which fulfill each other, help themselves out and pursue their own dreams in company with main story and plots connecting their life paths(such as pokemon mysteries, villains, various competitons)pushing main plot forward while their own interests benefiting from it. While preserving connection to past having occasionally previous friends bumping in Ash and co(entering same tournament they enter, being involved in regional villain or legendary pokemon arc) remembering their good times, showcasing newly acquired skills, forming new relationships and going on bigger, more challenging steps showing what they have been up to advancing careers.

Rather than adding one character after another increasing number of abandoned protagonists with unfnished stories decreasing continuity and strength of storyline due to no ties to history and events which molded story over the years.

I would really love to see Serena stay in the cast even after XY is over. If the theory of Serena getting a goal in the later half of XY saga (probably when some new side-quest comes out in the new games) is true, then the writers won't have much time to develop her goal in this saga. Plus, they haven't really developed Ash and Serena's relationship that much (if they intend to, that is).
So in that case, she and her newly founded goal would still be fresh and under-developed and they would have a reason to keep her in the cast for the next region.
The only problem would be if they want to bring a girl from the Gen-VII games to replace her, and if they decided to go back to a group of three then there would be no place for her.
As for why the travelling companions are replaced every saga, I think the simple answer is 'marketing strategy'. The show is just an advertisement for the games. The writers don't exactly care about the feelings of older fans like us, they just want to keep on bringing new characters so that the 'target audience' gets excited and rushes of to buy games containing those characters.
Though it would be really great if they make a filler season of some kind, where Ash travels with each of his previous travelling companions for a few episodes.

Personally, I prefer that traveling companions change with every series. It provides a fresh start for each series, allows the writers to try out different ideas with different characters and it would honestly be boring to me if Ash was still traveling with the same companions for multiple series. Each Pokemon series last for a few years, so they do have enough time on their hands to give them development. Granted, it might not always work out that way due changes that could be forced onto the series for marketing reasons and the writing's quality in general could make it problematic, but they do at least potentially have enough time to make it work.

Besides that, it makes a lot more sense to change the cast from a marketing perspective as well. They can include more characters from the new games to promote them while still keeping Ash and Pikachu around. As for Serena, I really can't see her sticking around after XY. While that would be an interesting development, I couldn't see them bringing over a sixth generation character to the next generation's region. They'd rather use that slot in the cast for a character from the seventh generation games instead.

I agree to have a stable cast, then just discarding ash's travel companions like an old shoe. They should have Dawn return as Ash's companion in X and Y. They should also bring back Brock, Misty, May and Max as well.

I'd like Serena to stick around for another generation or 2, however I prefer character replacing for every generation and I would have preferred if the anime replaced all the main characters including Ash and Team Rocket starting with Johto.

There's only so much development that can go into a character in a show where the reset button is hit every few seasons. Ash hasn't had much permanent development over how many seasons? Sixteen? Apart from some dabbling in him being a mentor of sorts to May and Dawn he's still pretty much the same Ash. Keeping any of his travel companions is really just an exercise in pleasing fans who have favourites

To be fair though only character who had been reset was arguably Ash in Unova(which for whatever reason was designed as completely new start, pseudo reboot to anime and franchise if big revamp games at that time went through was something to go by). Until than it seemed like he was progressing forward not just as trainer making with each saga better ranking in league, but also as character. In becoming more mature, open minded and strategic as person not being so much rash, irrational and stubborn like he used to be in early days taking more of guardian, mentored type role to others passing his knowledge. Which applied to his companions as well like Brock Misty or May when coming back for visits etc feeling like their journery, and various things happening in their lives left effect on characters growing up as result of that.

About keeping companion with Ash for more than one generation or reusing older ones by doing sequel to their story both havs way i see it pros and cons.
Bringing new characters and getting rid of older ones can ensure temporary hype and excitement they might bring with themselves, but how this lack of stable cast reflects on pokemon anime in longer run? When looking at full picture in here?
In my opinion not that well.

Because it basically amounts to bad continuity which has no strong following and connections to history, previous sagas or characters which left influence on it . All those social values, strong friendship and unity established between Ash and his traveling companions not meaning anything in end due to forever fading in oblivion once they leave cast with no contact or acknowledgment of their existence, strong bond and impact the left on each other lives ever happening. Like they never existed, had their own stories and plots which deserve to be continued on, explored and come closer toward achievement of dreams(rather than unfinished being treated like one trick pony).

Leading to Ash whenever starting journey in new region with entire new cast making everything look out of place, like we are following revamped pokemon anime hurting its credibility, storyline and desire to invest into anyone other than Ash or TR since whatever started storyline going for each and every travel friend ends discarded in trash bin -.Due to having no background, ties with important aspects in past which left influence on their growth or story hurting Ash and main story growth because of no hinsight in past experiences and characters which molded him to become what he is now taking away from cogency.

Along with having ton of abandoned characters with unfinished stories(see May, Misty, Dawn, Brock etc, etc), unexplored potential and prospect on building on already started plots and development they received using past experiences, gain of new skills and interest as template through which you can do follow up making them go through deeeper, more meaningful growth. Sending out message how Ash traveling companions are just pawns to fill up time before new gen comes out with story started about them, any impact and influence they left on pokemon past and story, and any help they provided to Ash growth being irrelevant treating it like they never existed or influenced anime at all defeating purpose of adding them in first place.

Current strategy writers are taking of just forgetting past and constantly adding more and mow new characters to mix which end up forever forgotten and never explored to full potential as well, prevents pokemon from becoming more consistently and better written.

Because like i said before in my humble opinion only with stable cast of companions which stand by Ash side and accompany him on journey progressing their own dreams and story, lot of ties and flashbacks to past ventures and moments which molded protagonists and main plots which move things forward you can set out foundation for continuity based story which pays attention to its history since you already have characters with groundwork/history behind them allowing to take cast in new, undiscovered directions doing actual sequel.

Which cannot really happen if storyline , build friendship and brand group creates around itself is constantly destroyed and cut starting from zero art start of every new region.

The only issue I have with not changing companions is that new characters wouldn't get to be added to the cast, and new characters almost always provide something new and interesting. Especially since they're a great way viewers can relate to the new games and generation. Heck, not just relate to the games, but relate to themselves. I'm sure most people see themselves in one of the characters, even if it may be just a little.

Yeah, it would be nice to see a group of friends work towards their long-term goals together, but I don't see it working out. It's possible to have characters stay in the story for a long period of time and not get boring, but I don't think the writers can pull that off. They have 3~4 years to work on each character and develop them to their very best, yet so much potential leaves the show every saga untapped.

Which cannot really happen if storyline , build friendship and brand group creates around itself is constantly destroyed and cut starting from zero art start of every new region.

I feel that another view of the whole friendship thing is that even though you're not always with said person, you'll always have the connection and memories that you share. I don't think they're necessarily destroying everything, just creating something new.

While there are some characters I would like to see stay with Ash for multiple generations, like Misty, Brock, Clemont, and Bonnie, in the long run, the show is mainly to advertise the games and, from that standpoint, it really doesn't make sense to keep characters after their generation ends as opposed to introducing new ones from that new generation.

I mean, we may grow to like their characters, but what would really be the point in Dawn going to Unova just to stand around? Or May advertising Sinnoh Contests as opposed to Dawn, the character of Sinnoh's games? It just really ends up going back to the games.

I feel that another view of the whole friendship thing is that even though you're not always with said person, you'll always have the connection and memories that you share. I don't think they're necessarily destroying everything, just creating something new.

That would have made sense if friendship bonds and older character influence left on Ash character and pokemon anime remain acknowledged though. But once older character leaves main cast and gets one obligatory follow up(next region appearance) he/she forever gets forgotten and abandoned never to be heard from or seen again. There are no any sign of Ash maintaning contact with them, legacy this characters leave on show, their own unfinished dreams and stories which are left in dust. Along with "apparently strong chemistry and close friendship created between them, their helping in building pokemon history and any contribution provided to man story" being runned down in to the ground.

Like it never existed or happened before hurting pokemon anime continuity a lot or whole story as whole, considering any ties to them are breaked never playing any kind of role in pokemon anime again(flashbacks and random appearance in openings dont count since they never lead toward anything ). Or remaining relevant in any shape or form.ncreasing continuity, bringing more meat to story and insight to previous sagas and events adding for more consistent story which builds on itself and unexpected fresh twist through her role she could play in future. Discoraging you as viewer from investing into any character ecept Ash and TR since you know what will become of them once new generation starts, never getting chance to enjoy in their lively quirks and enjoyable traits bringing dynamic into cast, their dreams, unique pokemon and impact they left on anime being taken forward ever again.

To add on what you said about new characters:

Writers could for a change do something untried before like adding new characters from time to time, but also reusing older ones giving them sequel, update and build up on previous started growth made with them having healthy mixture of new and older which becomes fresh thanks to new subplots and changes going for them.

There are many other long running shows like Naruto, Baccano, One Piece, Fairy tail, to extent Inazuma Eleven, even Bakugan(in sense of actually reusing its replaced characters from time to time joining main cast and receiving continuation strengthening connections to past and previous plots).
They keep same characters with no one being replaced and abandoned. They introduce new fresh plots going for each character, bring up new isues not told before exploring on each person past and motives, while working on having them come closer toward their dreams. Comparatively adding new faces to already established, familiar faces enlarging on main cast or doing some sort of rotation between older and new characters. Increasing loyalty and excitement among older fanbase and new ones with people not being bored with same characters. Because even when older ones start to stagnate writers fix things up reinventing them and making enjoyable through new twists finding ways to stay relevant.

But with Pokemon writers only rely on adding new characters, while leaving older ones erased and forgotten because "new is always better" apparently.

Answer is its not because in order to have fresh, fun anime you don't need to exchange characters. If anything this should serve as indication to people how writers are just being lazy not wanting to write more creatively and have continuity based, consistent story where we see characters develop over long period dealing with various challenges coming closer toward their dreams, build on their relationship and experience various new cultures, pokemon and places broadening horizons. Making you as viewer being able to relate yourselves better with character you grew to care, feel sorry for and wanting to see how will his story played out, feeling like their own growth and passing through various stages of life in coming closer toward its destination is representing your own aging, maturity and going in new directions life had set in front of you.

Because with strategy this show is taking currently, might as well not introduce any story about character at all if your going to discard and leave everything unfinished, forget about created friendships, impacts companions left on each other lives and importance they played in pokemon anime defeating point behind adding them in first place. Because at end of the day it will be forgotten like it never really mattered anyway.

Pokemon anime has growing problem with this approach making formula extremely stale and predictable by now at very least to me.
