Just something I've been thinking of for a bit and I wanted to hear everyone else opinion on, do you think their will be Trial Captains in the Sun and Moon anime?

I'm very doubtful about that. Ilima's absence and the other four being repurposed implies that the Trial Captains won't be part of the anime.

At most I could see them appearing as cameo/game tributes, but with other roles altogether.

…Unless the writers secretly trolled us and will later reveal that the foursome of non-Captains are actually Trial Captains in disguise, who pretended to be schoolmates just to study Ash and determine his potential. Fascinating idea, but too complex for this kind of show.

If not, then it's kind of weird that they left the trial captain amulets to the characters.

I mean...yeah...there already are. Lana, Sophocles, Kiawe, and Mallow are there. Now will they ever act as Trial Captains and actually lead their Trials like they are supposed to? Idk. But that doesn't change the fact that there are Trial Captains in the anime already.

Let's see:

- The first four to be revealed were made into Ash and Lillie's classmates.
- This includes all three of Akala's, and one of Ula'Ula's two. And they're not even just on Melemele for school, they live their with their families, with the exception of Kiawe, who still lives on Akala.
- Ilima was nowhere to be found for the Normal trial, Hala oversaw everything.
- Kiawe said he earned his Z-Ring and Firium Z from Olivia and he has no other Z-Crstals.

The logical conclusion is no. Trial Captains aren't a thing in the anime, just Totem Pokemon and Kahunas.

In the Anime they are not Trial Captains, they are just some normal kids in Alola which goes to the same school and same class as Ash.
It is their game counterparts are Trial Captains.

My Theory:

The anime introduces special tests to become trial captains. The main cast minus Lillie (since she' too afraid to touch Pokemon and by extension become a captain) gives the exams, and the trial captains pass in their respective types/subjects while Ash fails.

This allows the trial captains to get back to their roles and Ash is left to challenge them.

Ash's classmates are as much Trial Captains as Iris is a Gym Leader. In other words… no, they aren't.

I wouldn't have a problem if they were attending school to learn how to become Trial Captains, though. This topic has not been touched in the anime as yet, but it would be a good nod toward their game counterparts if it was at least hinted at some point.

That, though, would raise the question of what Ash and Lillie are doing in the same class as them. If they were aiming to become Trial Captains, Ash and Lillie would be the oddballs of the class.

No one said that there aren't other professions lol.

I can easily see Ash failing the exams and opting to do the island challenge instead, and Lillie could pass each and every subject with flying colours, and seeing her inability to touch Pokemon, instead of trial captainship, she could try to travel with Ash to resolve her fear and train to be a researcher.
