Chapter 1 :- Welcome to the world of pokémon!

Tsume was ten years old, and his whole life he had looked forward to becoming a pokémon trainer, and at last, his day had come. As his alarm clock sounded beside his bed, the excitement bubbled up inside him almost as if he had eaten a lovely warm bowl of soup, and the heat was spreading through him.

He threw the bed covers of with a flourish, and jumped to the floor, where the smack of his bare feet echoed as they hit the wooden floorboards. He glanced around his room, thinking that this was the final time he would be staying here. The room was a roughly rectangular, with a small window opposite his low slung bed. The rest of the room was more or less bare, and two doors were placed on the wall to his left, both coloured a soft cream colour, and decorated with various plants. The softly coloured wooden walls gave the room a lovely piney smell in the summer, and the high ceiling made the room seem bigger than it was.

Tsume went through the left door first where he entered a small bathroom, which contained little more than a sink, a toilet and a large mirror that stood at head height. Snatching his toothbrush from the holder, he brushed his teeth so quickly it hurt, leaned over and gave himself a quick wash and dryed him self with a plain white cotton towel. Looking up, he got a clear look at his reflection.

His light brown hair ended just before it got past his ears, and all around the back of his head it stuck up in different directions, and refused to lie flat, like a stubborn hedgehog. His fringe came just above his same coloured eye-brows, obscuring his forehead behind a brunette veil. Down each side of his head lay a grey streak, which was the closest thing to a birth mark he had, and was his one unique feature. He looked at his face, and saw the same excited expression, the same piercing blue eyes gazing back at him that he expected to find.

“right then you” he said to himself, “who's gonna start their quest to become a pokémon master in just a few hours?” he took upon a mock quizzical pose for a moment, and stroked an imaginary beard “that's right! You are! Now lets go get 'um!!”

With his self prep talk over, he rushed back into his bedroom, where he threw on his clothes like they would disappear if he left them loose. His clothing was simple, plain blue jeans topped with a brown leather belt and deep blue t-shirt. Over the top of his shirt he pulled on a dark red jacket, with pockets on both the sides and on the chest, and with a large pokéball symbol emblazoned on the back.

“Right then, lets go!”

He tore out of the right hand door and into the main living space of his single story home. The room was dominated by a large painting of the legendary pokémon Entei, which hung just behind a TV, and the layout of the furniture meant the painting could not be ignore from any place within the room. The same hardwood floorboards stretched across the room, where they disappeared underneath the far walls. Only two windows were in the room, each on either side of a hardwood front door which led outside.

Grabbing a quick breakfast of porridge, he grabbed his green backpack, made sure he had the card he had been given and stepped out of the front door to greet the morning.

A fresh summer breeze greeted him as he stepped out onto the path. The tarmac felt hard underneath his feet, and was a welcome change to the wood in his house. It was midday, yet the city appeared to be in a state of twilight due to the high rising trees that rose on each side of the street. Along his street lay identical house to his, with a light brownish wood making up the walls, and a grey slate making up the roof, each of which was sloped at different angles, all of which help to keep the cities traditional feeling.
In fact the only building that stood out from this was the one directly opposite his house, the cities pokémon gym. The gym stood tall, a giant wooden dome pushing its way through the tree line, with the outer walls being coloured a gentle purple. Outside the gym, two teens were having a heated argument.

“Please!” the teen on the left exclaimed, this teen was tall, but broad, his whole appearance was that of a person who took extreme pride in their body, from the sleeveless shirt that exposed bulging biceps to the knee length shorts that showed equally well formed leg muscles. “Hitmonchan will beast this gym so much they'll wanna make me the gym leader!”

The other trainer raised a green gloved hand to his shaking head, “how stupid do you get?” everyone knows that fighting types do nothing to ghost types, so Morty is going to wipe the floor with you!”

Leaving the two bickering trainers behind, Tsume walked down the street towards the research centre that had recently come to the city. Even from where he was walking, the research centre stood out like a sore thumb, as it was at completely at odds with the rest of the cities traditional aesthetic. Rather than even trying to blend in with the rest of the wooden walls and natural look, the centre was roughly rectangular shape, with pure white walls and harsh straight lines that only a new build could achieve. Large windows made of mirrored glass reflected the beams of light the punctured through the natural ceiling provided by the lines of trees.

Even through the line of trees the remnants of a tower could be seen. The tower looked more like a temple than anything else, except at the third story the building ended abruptly, and the wood had taken on a harsh, sooty black that made it appear as though burned. It was this that gave the tower its name. Burned Tower.

Tsume ran down the street towards the research lab, all he could feel was the thud of his feet as they landed on the tarmac, a vibration that reverberated throughout his whole body, but did nothing two dampen his excitement and eagerness. This was it, he was going to become a trainer. He skidded to a stop just before the automatic glass doors that signalled the entrance to the lab. The doors opened silently, and Tsume stepped inside.

Inside, Tsume has to shield his eyes from the blinding light that hit him. The building was brighter than the outside city, mainly due two three parallel fluorescent tubes that illuminated the room from the low ceiling above, giving the room a cramped feeling. To his right a set of light blue stairs led to the upstairs of the building. Tsume looked around the single room that he was in, which showed more pure white walls and clinical angles, the whole place reminded him of a hospital. To the far side, several computer screens showed pictures, diagrams and equations that Tsume didn't understand, and notes lay in a neat pile, the top most showing a drawing of the Burned tower. However, all Tsume's attention was directed at what lay on the table in the centre of the room.

The table was pure glass, the only exception being the artistically curved metal legs that gave the table its height, coming just up to waist level. On this table sat three spheres, the bottom half being snow white, the top half being a deep red. Tsume slowly approached the table, knowing what these were. “pokéballs” he murmured.

“Ah ha!” a deep voice came from behind Tsume, making him jump about a foot in the air. “You must be Tsume!!” Tsume turned around to see a man walking down the stairs. The man was thin and tall, giving him the look of someone who had been stretched a bit too much. He wore a plain squeaky clean lab-coat, underneath which was an equally clean white shirt. The man's whole appearance spoke of cleanliness. Atop his head sat no hair, but he made up for it with a tremendous black handlebar moustache. “I'm Doctor Maple” he stated, “and I'm in charge here at this research station”

“your only a doctor?” Tsume blurted out before he could help himself, and he blushed with embarrassment at asking such a rude question.

The doctor however simply laughed, seemingly unoffended “yes yes I'm not a professor yet” he smiled, showing a gleaming set of pearly white teeth, which seemed to shine next to the contrast of his black moustache. “ This is my final assessment before I can declare myself a pokémon professor, which is to investigate any signs of legendary pokémon at the burned tower”

“have you found anything” Tsume asked

“well I have some evidence” the doctor smiled again, “but this isn't about me, this is about you! Today is the day you get your first pokémon!” Doctor Maple strolled past Tsume so he was standing opposite him on the other side of the table. “now, before you pick your pokémon, I must inform you that being a pokémon trainer is not an easy life. You will be constantly travelling, often living off the land and the generosity of others, it will not be the glamorous lifestyle of strolling from town to town, having a few battles then simply progressing along until you are finally at the pokémon league!” He leaned forward, placing his hands on the table “are you sure this is the life you want?”

Tsume had one last thought, no turning back after this he knew this. “I'm ready, I want to be a pokémon trainer”

“Good good then” The doctor rubbed his hands together, as if preparing for something, and ran his right hand over the smooth dome of his head. He suddenly shot his left arm out, pointing at the the pokéball on the left side of the table, "here we have bellsprout, the grass type pokémon." He touched the button on the front of the pokéball, and with a flash of light, the bellsprout appeared, wobbling slightly, the size of its head not in proportion with the rest of its body.

“Bellllllllllsprout” the pokémon exclaimed happily. It seemed glad to be outside of its pokéball.

“now in this pokéball” he gestured with his right hand at the rightmost pokéball “we have Poliwag, the water type. Yet again, he pushed the button and with another flash of light, a poliwag appeared.

“Poli Poliiiiiii” it closed its eyes and jumped around the table, flapping its tail in excitement, it then began playing with bellsprout.

“now in the last ball” The Doctor finally indicated the ball in the centre of the table, “we have the fire type, Vulpix” With a push on the button on the final ball, and with a last flash of light, the Vulpix appeared.

“Vuulllllpix” it yawned, as if it had been woken from its sleep, it sat back on it haunches, and looked at the two humans on either side of the table it currently rested on.

“now think long and hard about this Tsume” the Doctor suddenly sounded serious, more serious than before any ways “once you make this choice, it cannot be unmade, it will affect the rest of your career, and will most likely be the pokémon you are known by.”

Tsume brought his hand up to his chin, and had a bit of a scratch as he pondered his choice. Any one of these pokémon would be a fine choice, however, through extreme difficulty, he made his choice. “I choose....... Vulpix!” he reached out towards the pokémon, and it jumped up into his arms, curled up and rubbed its head against his chest, closing its eyes in apparent comfort.
“an excellent choice” the doctor smiled again and returned the other two pokémon to there pokéballs, “now all I need to do is to give you your....” before he could finish however, Tsume heard footsteps behind him, and the doctor was frowning, looking at something behind him.

Tsume turned around, Vulpix still in his arms, and faced what was behind him. A lone female stood there, clad entirely in black clothes, even thigh high black leather boots. Upon her head, a black cap obscured her features, and lank blonde hair fell in tumbles around her shoulders. On her chest, a large red 'R' was emblazoned.

“You there” she pointed at the doctor with obvious aggression, “you are to give me all of your research on the legendary pokémon you have, by orders of the boss!” She stood up tall, with all the authority she could muster, but still did not meet the doctors lofty height.

The doctor crossed his arms across his chest, and simple frowned at the intruder, and said nothing as he took in her appearance. “if you think” he finally answered “I'm going to help a low life thieving organisation like Team Rocket, you've got another thing coming”

The woman reeled in shock, she didn't seem to be expecting any resistance. However she quickly recovered, and spread her legs to shoulder width “fine, if you want give me what I want, I'll just take it!” She pulled a pokéball from behind her back “go Muk!” A flash of light illuminated the room, and materialised itself as what only Tsume could describe as a purple lump with a face. Fear gripped him as the pokémon in front of him reared up and flexed aggressively.

“Muk MUK!!!” it roared, and awaited instructions from its trainer.

Doctor Maple didn't even flinch, he blinked, and with deliberate slowness, put his hand into the depths of his lab-coat and pulled out his own pokéball. Without a word, the pokéball snapped open and a flash of light materialised it self, and the pokémon that appeared looked like a large lavender cat, with oversized eyes and a reed gem in the centre of its forehead.

“Espeon!!” the Doctors pokémon exclaimed, and it tensed itself, preparing for the fight to come.

“ I'll give you one chance” the doctor declared clearly “leave now and I'll forget this ever happened.”

“ha, no chance!” The team rocket grunt replied angrily, “I'm not gonna let a old man like you get in the way of us! Muk go! Use sludge bomb!

“MUK!!!” the poison type reared back and spat a black ball at the Espeon. The Espeon however, easily dodged aside, and to add insult to injury, began licking its paws, as if completely unperturbed and bored by the assault.

“what!!” the team rocket grunt took a step back in shock. She then shook her fist in anger “ Muk! Keep firing sludge bombs until you hit that thing”

“Muk!” yet again the Muk reared back and fired three more sludge bombs at Espeon.

“Espeon, use teleport, dodge those attacks!” the Doctor ordered, instantly, Espeon disappeared, and reappeared on the other side of the lab. In her blind rage, the grunt ordered Muk to keep on firing, and each time Espeon simply teleported to another location in the lab. After a few minutes, the Muk was showing signs of exhaustion, Tsume was cowering underneath a desk with Vulpix cradled in his arms, and the Doctor simply stood there, barking orders at his Espeon.

“Time to finish this!” The Doctor roared “Espeon, teleport behind Muk and use Psychic!” Espeon nodded silently, and reappeared behind Muk. The gem in its forehead glowed with energy, and a giant crack echoed through the lab as the tiles underneath Espeon's feet cracked with the force of the attack.
The beam of energy struck Muk clean in its back, and the pokémon howled in pain. After ten seconds, the doctor ordered “Espeon enough”. Immediately, Espeon stopped its attack and shimmered out of existence yet again, only to reappear next to its master, where it resumed to lick its paws contently.

“NOOOOO” the team rocket grunt sunk to her knees, and withdrew Muk. She pulled herself upright, and pointed directly at the Doctors chest “this isn't over, you haven't heard the last from Team Rocket!” She then turned on the spot stumbled an ran out of the door and raced down the street outside.

“Espeon return” the doctor said, and a beam of red light from his pokéball connected with his Espeon, who glowed red for a second, before disappearing back inside its ball. “now lets have a look at the damage...” The Doctor turned around to survey his wrecked lab. “Tsume, you can come out now”
Tsume pulled himself from underneath the desk, and was shocked by the destruction that was in front of him. The entire wall behind the Doctor was covered in a thick black sludge, and all of the monitors were smashed. The doctors research notes were scattered across the ruined lab, some even stuck to the mess on the far wall. Even as Tsume took in the damage, the Doctor strolled across the room and picked up the pieces of what looked like a small red flip phone.

“this is going to be a problem” The doctor stated, scratching his head. “This was to be your pokédex, but I have no more” the doctor frowned “well you have a mission then don't you!” the doctors frown was replaced with a smile.

“I have... a mission?” Tsume was confused, what possible hope could the doctor take from this situation? “but doctor, your lab, your research, its all....ruined”
“ruined?” the Doctor looked puzzled for a second “no no I have all my research stored on hard drives upstairs, to keep its safe, a good choice I think!” the doctor laughed “and the mission you have Tsume, is to travel to New Bark town, meet Professor Elm, get a new pokédex and start your journey!”

Tsume smiled, “you got it Doc!” Tsume turned and began walking towards the door “ I won't let you down!”

Before Tsume could get through the door The doctor called “and Tsume!” Tsume turned around “Welcome to the world of pokémon”

No comments? well i waited long enough, so heres chapter 2!

Chapter 2:- A Woodland Arena

Tsume was over the moon with happiness. Despite the fear that had been embracing him in the lab during the battle, he couldn't help but feel excited, he ran down the street, with Vulpix perched on his shoulder like a pet bird. It took him half the time to get home than it did to get to the lab, and he ran so fast down the street than many people stopped and stared as a young lad streaked past them with a pokémon on his shoulder.

When he got home, Tsume's mother was just arriving home from work. Her hair tumbled all the way down her back, and was the same shade of light brown as her son's. She had a similar shaped face, but her eyes, unlike Tsume's, were a deep forest green. She wore a simple pair of jeans and a bright yellow shirt, which radiated like the sun in the twilight city.

“Ah Tsume, your home,” His mother spoke, and then caught sight of the pokémon on his shoulder “oh and you have a darling little pokémon with you” she reached an arm out and began to scratch Vulpix underneath the chin, and the small pokémon seemed to enjoy it.

“Thanks mom” Tsume smiled, “and you'll never guess what happened at the lab!” Tsume then recounted the events that happened in the lab, and the quest that Doctor Maple had given him.

“Oh dear, you have to travel all the way to New Bark Town?” his mother sounded worried. “That's a long way dear, are you sure your ready for this?”

Tsume rolled his eyes “yes mom I'm ready, I'm sure, I'll be careful blah blah blah”

She put her hands on her hips and took upon a scornful tone “Don't you mock me Tsume, it's a mothers job to be worried, especially since your father never returned...”
Before she could finish, she began to sob. It was evident that his mother was still mourning the disappearance of his father.

“Don't worry mom, I'll come back, I promise.”

“I know you will Tsume, but please, take these final gifts from me” His mother gave him a small amount of poké, fresh clothes and 5 pokéballs. “ I'm sure you'll have more use for these than me, now go, and start your epic journey!” With a sob, his mother ran back inside.

Tsume felt troubled that he was leaving his mother in such a state, but he knew that it was his time now, and he was going to prove to his mother that he could do it. “I will return mom, one day”

With this Tsume faced south, and gazed into the forest that seemed to stretch endlessly in front of him. On the side of the road read the sign: Route 37, south toward Violet City.

With Vulpix on his shoulder, and the world of pokémon ahead of him, Tsume set off into the forest.

After a day of travelling through the forest, Tsume was sick of the sight of trees. His arms and face were covered with tiny scratches. Even Vulpix seemed tetchy, as, following Tsume's idea to not put the pokémon in a pokéball, Vulpix to was bearing the assault that the forest was giving them.

Mile after mile of tree stretched before them, and more often than not the narrow dirt path was engulfed by the surrounding greenery, so Tsume found himself fighting through bushes, brambles and all manner of plants, which only served to make his mood worse.

This is exactly what the Doctor had warned him about. A pokémon journey was not glamorous, it was tough, it was difficult and most importantly it was a test of a trainers true character.

Finally, what seemed like days later (when in truth it had only been hours), Tsume came to small clearing in the trees. The grass here was long, and it shimmered slightly in the breeze, giving the area a mystical effect. The clearing was roughly rectangular, and in the centre, sat a young teen, who seemed to be meditating.

The teen wore an all in one purple robe, which reminded Tsume of the sort of clothing that monks wear. On his approach, the teen stood up and faced Tsume. His hair was a sea green, so dark it almost looked black. He seemed to be staring straight at Vulpix on Tsume's shoulder.

“ I am Greg” he spoke, in a deep slow voice. “I am a pokémon trainer, and my psychic types power are beyond measure! As a fellow trainer, you must accept my challenge!” He snatched a pokéball out from the sleeve of his robe and took on a pose that signalled he was prepared for battle.

A flash of light illuminated the forest clearing as the challenging trainer opened up his pokéball. The flash landed in the centre of the emerald green field on which the two trainers stood.

In anticipation, Vulpix jumped down from Tsume's shoulder, spreads its feet wide, bracing itself in preparation from the struggle to come.

Meanwhile, the flash of light had started to materialize, and Tsume took in it's appearance. Its bottom half, including short, stubby legs was a dark brown, and the top half, with equal stubby arms was a yellow, the two colours being separated by a wavy line. A small trunk was positioned above its mouth, and the look in its eyes gave it the appearance of someone who had not slept in weeks.

“DROOOWWWWZEEEE” the pokémon declared, and got ready for the instructions from its trainer to initiate the fight.

Tsume gulped, the Drowzee was much bigger than his Vulpix and the only experience he had of battling was what he had seen from underneath a desk in the doctors lab. This is it, Tsume thought. My first battle.

“All right Vulpix, lets kick off our first victory! Use ember!” Tsume pointed authoritatively at the Drowzee, and watched as his Vulpix began to carry out its attack.

Vulpix took in a deep breath, and then bellowed out a small shards of fire at the opponent. Tsume was entranced by the beauty of the attack, as each small bead of fire was a small inferno of raging yellow, red and orange. The attack streaked across the field, and although the Drowzee attempted to get out of the way, it was too slow, and the strength of the attack knocked the much larger pokémon off its feet.

“Drowzee get back up!” instantly, the Drowzee jumped to its feet, and its sleepy eyes narrowed, as it now knew it was not dealing with as weak a pokémon as it originally thought. “now, use pound!”

“Drowzee!!” the pokémon began running across the stretch between it and Vulpix, pulling back its right hand in anticipation of its attack. The large pokémon moved quicker than Tsume thought it could move, it landed a full palm slap to the side of Vulpix, and the much smaller pokémon was lifted off its feet and flung about 3 meters across the field.

“Vulpix nooo!!” Tsume screamed, He thought that was it, he was the worst trainer ever.

“Vuuuuulpix” came a small sound. Tsume looked across, and saw his pokémon pulling itself to its feet slowly. Although it had taken a direct hit, it was still able to battle. It pulled it self back into its battle pose, and its eyes were focused solely on the Drowzee. Hope came flooding back in to Tsume like a crashing wave, this battle was not over yet. His relief however, was short lived.

“Drowzee, use confusion, finish it off!”

The Drowzee's eyes glowed purple, and a shocked Vulpix was lifted off the ground. Its legs flailed around as it desperately tried to find purchase on the non-existent ground, and panic began to show in the small fox pokémon's eyes.

“Vulpix quickly, land an ember attack before it can throw you!”

Even in its distressed state, Vulpix managed to get off another scorching fire attack, and this one hit the Drowzee directly in the stomach. The wind was blown out of the Drowzee, and Vulpix fell the short distance to the floor.

“Now before it can recover, use quick attack!” Tsume said quickly, as he knew he had to take every advantage he could get against this much stronger pokémon.

A white light surrounded Vulpix's body, and it flew across the distance between it and Drowzee, landing another direct hit.

“Drowzee counter with another pound” fear was setting in to the trainers voice now, as he began to consider that he might actually lose this battle.

“Vulpix, use quick attack through the Drowzee legs! Avoid that attack!”

As the Drowzee swung its arm to land its attack, a small brown/red blur flew between it legs, and next thing Vulpix was behind it. The speed of Vulpix caught the Drowzee unaware, and it chased after the much smaller pokémon, swinging both arms now, one after another, trying to land an attack.

Vulpix however, was much too fast, each time Drowzee came close, it simply flitted away, either with its own natural speed or by using quick attack. Tsume took a close look at the Drowzee. The much larger pokémon's attacks were getting slower, and its breath becoming laboured. It couldn't keep this up much longer.

“Vulpix, use quick attack, then follow up with an ember!”

Once more, Vulpix flew at Drowzee like it had been fired out of a cannon, and as the psychic type was still reeling from the first attack, Vulpix fired its ember directly at it from point blank range. It couldn't miss.

After the inferno had finished Drowzee dropped to its knees first, swayed from side to side, then fell face first to the floor like a collapsing tree, kicking up small puffs of dust around the edge of its body.

“YEEEEAAAAHHH” Tsume shouted “We did it Vulpix!” He outstretched his arms and Vulpix jumped up and began lo lick his face, and Tsume continued his victory celebrations, jumping around like a madman.

The trainer slumped down to his knees and half-heartedly raised his pokéball, “Drowzee, return” he murmured, defeat now apparent in the once confident trainers voice. After his pokémon had returned to him, he pulled himself up, and began to walk away, shoulders slumped, head down, acting like he had just lost the pokémon league.

“Hey Greg!” Tsume shouted, and ran across the gap between them. Greg had turned around, and was looking at Tsume with shock on his face. “That was a great battle” Tsume said as he caught up to him. “your Drowzee is really strong, I can see you put a lot of time and effort training him”

Greg continued to look shocked, but then an smile swept across his face. “Thanks! That means a lot coming from an experienced trainer like yourself”

Tsume flushed, “I'm not an experienced trainer” he murmured, embarrassment creeping through him. “I only just started my pokémon journey yesterday.”
“Your not” Greg sounded shocked “but the way you handle yourself on the battlefield, you act like you have been doing this for years!”

“Really? Thanks a lot” Tsume's embarrassment was replaced with joy. It turned out he might just be an all right trainer anyway! “if you don't mind me asking how long have you been a trainer?”

“well” Greg replied “I graduated from trainer school about 3 weeks ago, and since then me and Drowzee have been travelling since then”

“Trainer school” Tsume asked , he had never heard of a trainer school “What trainer school?”

“The trainer school in Violet City of course! Haven't you heard of it?”

“Well no, but I've got to pass through Violet City anyway, so I might pay it a visit” Tsume thought about it, this school certainly could give him experience, which he desperately needed.

With his mind set up, Tsume said goodbye to Greg, and continued the long trek, back into the forest and towards Violet City.

Re: Tribulations of a Trainer

Chapter 3 :- A Shocking Reunion

Eventually Tsume left the forest behind him, and an open world spanned for miles around, flat in every direction. He felt like he stood at the coast of the ocean, as the emerald plains seemed to ripple like waves as the wind travelled unobstructed across them.

The dirt path cut straight across the fields like a knife, and ran straight past the first building Tsume has seen since home, and it looked like a farm.

A small, waist high wooden fence surrounded a large rectangular section of the plains, and would have comfortably held most of Tsume's street inside of it. At the back of the compound was the only building, which looked like a large barn. The walls were stone, and the roof was made out of a thatched long grass that seemed to be abundant in the area, making it look like the roof was shining yellow to compete with the sunshine. Inside the compound, it looked like little balls of fluff were bouncing around. With nothing else in sight, Tsume angled himself toward the building for a closer look.

It took Tsume longer than he expected to reach the farm, as the flatness of the plains and no surrounding landmarks made it difficult to judge distance accurately. During the journey, Vulpix had jumped down off his shoulder, and clearly expressing its joy to be out of the forest, was running around Tsume's legs, having fun.

As they reached the farm fence, the apparent balls of wool that Tsume had spotted miles away turned out to be pokémon.

The closest of these pokémon was about 2 meters away from the fence at which Tsume stood, and had its head down eating some grass. Its head was a light blue with eyes a deep black. Its body was covered with a thick yellow wool, which culminated in a curl upon its head. Two ears stuck out like cones from the side of its head, coloured black with a single yellow stripe down the middle, and at the end of its identically coloured tail sat a orange sphere, and although it was difficult to tell in the midday sunshine, it looked like it was glowing.

Around 30 of these pokémon were spread around the enclosed field, most of which were eating grass. Looking around the field, Tsume noticed that some patches around the field were blackened, as if burnt by something.

Before Tsume could find out what had caused the strange marks across the field, a rough voice came from behind him “Hey, you get back from there!” Tsume turned to see a disgruntled looking man hobbling toward him.

The man wore blue denim coveralls that were worn from being used. Thick black leather working boots covered the man's feet, and on his head was a simple straw hat. He also looked quite old.

“Oh I'm sorry sir” Tsume spoke quietly “I've just come out of the forest and was wondering what these pokémon were” Tsume gestured at the field.

“Oh these?” The farmer took on a more friendly tone “these are my Mareep! And judging from that Vulpix on your shoulder, I'd say you a pokémon trainer, am I right?”

Tsume was taken aback, it was not often that unknown people were so friendly to him, but then again he had heard that pokémon trainers were generally accepted anywhere with open arms.

“Errrrm, yes I'm a pokémon trainer, I'm on my way to New Bark Town to meet Professor Elm.” Tsume replied “I'm quite a new trainer and Vulpix here” Almost on queue Vulpix strolled up to the farmer with an inquisitive look in it eye “is my only pokémon”

“Well then, would you like a nice hot meal?” The farmer asked. Tsume belly rumbled. After two days of travelling through the woods and only eating the little he could prepare himself, he realised how hungry he was.

“yes please, I'm famished.” Tsume smiled.

“Good then” The farmer threw a set of rubber gloves to Tsume “you can help me shear the Mareep” Tsume looked at the rubber gloves in confusion, and before he could ask about it he heard an electrical crackle from behind him

He spun round on the spot an saw two of the Mareep rub past each other, and as they did, a small, but extremely bright, spark blossomed between them and rocketed towards the earth, leaving only the smell of burning behind.

“You and your Vulpix can round up the Mareep” the farmer said, smiling now “Don't worry, they're passive pokémon, unless provoked. I'll be waiting for you by the pen over there” The farmer raised his hand and pointed to a small metal enclosure on the far side of the field. “You didn't think I was just going to give you a meal did you?”

Tsume pulled the gloves on, getting ready. How hard could it be? He jumped over the fence while Vulpix jumped trough a gap between the panels, and landed softly on the grass. He eyed up the nearest Mareep, taking in its form and thinking of a way to get it over to the pen, which lay about 15 meters away.

“Watch this Vulpix” Tsume told his pokémon, who sat down and did just that as Tsume snook round behind the Mareep.

Tsume stalked up to the pokémon, and quickly grabbed it and lifted it up.

“Baaaaaaaaaaaa” Went the Mareep as it was shocked to find itself disturbed from its time eating grass. Tsume thought he heard the farmer shout something from the pen, but as he couldn't hear it, took no heed of it. As he took the first step towards the pen, the Mareep's wool rubbed up against his shirt, and although his hands were protected, his chest was not, so a small charge of electricity coursed threw his body.

Small as though the charge was, for that split second, Tsume felt like his body was on fire. All his muscles clenched and the Mareep fell to the floor, and, acting as though nothing had happened, bounced off towards a fresh patch of grass and began grazing again.

Tsume pulled himself up to a sitting position. On the front of his shirt a small hole had been burned where the spark had come into contact with him. From the other side of the field, Tsume could hear the farmer laughing.

“You can't just pick them up” he shouted over to Tsume. “you have to heard them without coming into contact with them!”

Tsume thought long and hard about how to get the passive Mareep to move. He even strolled up to one and sat next to it to see if it would move if it saw him coming, but all that happened was he ended up getting another shock and another hole in his shirt. Vulpix came and sat next to him and when it did, the nearest Mareep bleated in panic and ran away from it.

That's it! Tsume pulled himself to his feet, “Okay Vulpix lets go!”

Over the next hour an a half Tsume directed Vulpix around the field, and managed to successfully herd the Mareep to the farmer, who simply sheared of their wool, them sent them back out into the field, where they bounced around as it was a normal occurrence to be chased around by a Vulpix.

“And that's the last one” the farmer said at last, “now come lets go inside and get a good hearty meal inside of you before you pass out!”

Tsume didn't even have the energy to answer, he simply followed the farmer wordlessly inside his house, with an equally tired Vulpix at his heels.

The farmers house consisted of one large room that came together as a living space and kitchen as one. The kitchen area was distinguishable from the rest of the building as it had a section of stoned floor, unlike the rest of the room which was wooden, and cupboards and a lone simple stove were lined up against the wall. The walls were of a simple design, being bare except for a few windows and 3 doors, one being the front door which Tsume had come in from. The other doors led off to which Tsume guessed were the farmer's bedroom and work area.

In the corner two identical pokémon were sleeping, not even glancing up as the new arrivals entered.

Each pokémon was covered in a thick grey fur, with traces of black around the face and paws. When Vulpix entered the room, both pokémon raised their heads to show a red nose, with yellow and red eyes. They both looked like feral canines, but Vulpix seemed completely at ease, and when Tsume sat down at the simple wooden table, it sat on his lap.

“Don't worry about those two” the farmer said as he saw Tsume looking a the two pokémon, “they're my Poochyena, and are pretty much harmless.” the farmer then grabbed some pokémon food out of one of the kitchen cupboards, put it into 3 bowls and placed them on the floor. “Here let your Vulpix have some of this, it will help to restore her energy”

Tsume complied, and carried Vulpix over to the bowls where the two Poochyena were already noisily tucking into there meal. As he sat back down, Tsume asked “How do you know my Vulpix is female?

Before he answered the farmer brought over to bowls full of a thick soup, and sat down opposite Tsume. “Well its quite simple” said the farmer in reply “most Vulpix's are female and I can tell simply by the way she acts. Well, don't just sit around, tuck in!”

On queue, Tsume tucked into the soup, which was delicious. It was thick, yet warm and tasty at the same time, and helped to ease the aching in his limbs. No words were exchanged between the two of them as they ate, and it was a while before any noise broke the silence.

A loud rap on the door echoed, and both of the Poochyena began growling. The farmer stood up from the table and went to answer the door.

Tsume went back to eating his meal, and as Vulpix was finished, it, no she, Tsume mentally corrected himself came over and sat down near Tsume's feet. He heard a conversation from the door, but paid no attention to it, and proceeded to scratch Vulpix behind her ears. The two Poochyena were still growling, and were on their feet now.

Suddenly, the voices became more raised from over the door, and Tsume turned around on his chair to see what was going on.

He could see that the farmer was having an argument with someone, someone dressed all in black, a uniform that looked strangely familiar.....

“Team Rocket!” Tsume spoke aloud, the farmer turned around and he exposed who was standing at the door. The woman from the doctors lab back home.

“You!!!” she hissed “your the little brat from the doctors lab!”
“What are you doing here!” Tsume replied, fear striking him. He didn't think he could take a Team Rocket member, he just didn't have the experience.

Before she could answer however, the farmer intervened “She is trying to get me to move off my land, as her company is trying to build some great big shopping centre in the area, and my farm is the only piece of land they don't own and happens to sit smack bang in the middle of their proposed area.” He turned to the Team Rocket grunt. “Now as I told you and your people before, I ain't selling and I ain't moving!”

“Fine then” the woman's eyes narrowed, “we have other methods” with that, she turned around and walked outside.

“Wait what do you mean you have....” Before the farmer could finish, a huge ball of sludge had flew through the door and struck him in the chest flinging him across the room like a rag doll. He hit the floor with a audible thud, and was rendered unconscious.

“MUK!” came the shout from the door. Another sludge bomb came flying threw the door, and Tsume threw himself sideways, and the table he was sitting at only moments before was reduced to dust as it was impacted by the attack.

“Vulpix go” Tsume shouted as he pulled himself up “Use ember!” Vulpix let loose the flame attack, and in split second the much larger poison pokémon had been lifted up and flung back outside. From the outside, more commotion could be heard. Tsume ran to the door, and was shocked at what he saw.

A lone helicopter was hovering overhead, and the grass underneath it was being flattened like someone had pressed a giant hand down upon the field. The helicopter was a jet black with a red R emblazoned on the side, a much larger version of the emblem on the uniform. Out of the helicopters, 5 more grunts had dropped down, each of them wearing the same black uniform with the red R on the chest, and all of them summoned their own pokémon. Their pokémon were a smaller version of the Muk in front if him, and the Muk was pulling itself upright, with its kindred gathering around it.

Fear gripped Tsume, whilst he may have had a sliver of hope against the one Rocket, he stood no chance against that many. Not with just Vulpix. “Vulpix, stand down, we can't fight that” defeat resonated in his voice, and upon hearing this, the Rockets smiled.

“Smart boy,” the female said, “we wouldn't want to hurt you or your precious pokémon, now would we?” She laughed, and the other rockets joined in, there victory in hand.

Suddenly, two crackling purple balls of energy streaked from behind Tsume and hit two of the Rockets pokémon. Looking behind him, he saw the farmer standing in the doorway, his two Poochyena standing by his feet.

“Good, now again, use Dark Pulse!” on cue, the Poochyena opened their mouths and another ball of dark purple energy gathered, then propelled it self like a missile towards the Rockets pokémon again.

Tsume ran back and stood next to the farmer, and his Vulpix placed itself next to the Poochyena. “Vulpix, help out, use ember!”

“What are you waiting for fools!” The female Rocket screamed, “attack back! Muk use sludge bomb!”

“erm yeah!” One of the rockets responded, “Grimer you use sludge bomb too!” following his lead, the other rockets commanded their own Grimers to attack, and suddenly the peaceful farm was turned into a battleground. Attacks sped back and forth, Dark energy and fire vs poisonous sludge, occasionally one of the sludge attacks would find there targets, but most times they just streaked off in odd directions, hitting the walls of the farmers house, smashing windows and leaving an awful mess (not to mention the stink).

The longer the battle went on, the stronger Vulpix and the two Poochyena seemed to get. Through careful instructions from their trainers (and certain ineptness from the Rockets), they brought down several of the Grimers through concentrated attacks, until only one Grimer and the looming Muk remained.

“ah enough of this” the female Rocket shouted above the commotion as the final Grimer went down to direct hits from both dark and fire attacks, “Muk get up close! Take out those pretentious mutts!” On command, the Muk moved with incredible speed and engulfed one of the Poochyena underneath its huge body, and managed to corner the remaining on against the wall.

Showing incredible bravery, the small dog pokémon stayed defiant till the end, firing off Dark Pulses till the last second, where it too was swallowed up by the vast Muk.
“Poochyena nooo” the farmer shouted “please respond!”

The Muk 'laughed', or it did something what Tsume guessed was a laugh, and then spat out the farmers two loyal pokémon, both unconscious, both unable to battle. Tsume new he couldn't fight against a pokémon that strong, and he knew he had to get it away from the farmer.

“Vulpix, lets go, stay with me!” Tsume then turned and jumped over the fence into the Mareep field. Tsume ran over to where the Mareep had gathered, where they had watched, emotionless, as the battle had played out in front of them, simply chewing grass.

“Muk, get that little rat!” The pokémon smashed through the fence and fired two huge sludge bombs at Tsume and Vulpix. However, as it fired, one of the Mareeps decided to break off from the flock in search of some fresh grass, and took the both of the impacts directly on the flank.

“BBAAAAAAA” the Mareep was lifted off the ground and landed smack at Tsume's feet. He could see its eyes flickering, and it writhed in pain as the poison attack got stuck in its woollen fleece.

Suddenly, all of the Mareep behind Tsume had stopped chewing. Acting as a collective, almost as if they were one huge pokémon, they spat out the grass in one smooth movement. They then proceeded and grouped up in one huge formation, with Tsume just at the side of it.

Not paying much attention, Tsume took off his jacket and began removing the sludge from the fleece of the Mareep at his feet. Please be okay, he thought, your strong, you can take this. The Mareep, had stopped writhing in pain, and lay still as Tsume removed the traces of the poisonous substance from its fleece.

Meanwhile, all of the other Mareep began rubbing up against each other, and cracks of electricity began to spark out from the group, like beams of twisting light blasting out from an angry sun. The grass underneath the groups feet burnt and crisped as the incredible heat radiated out, leaving a large black mark where it once been emerald green. Suddenly, all of the stored static charge began to gather around the formation, and glowed like the surface of a star, so bright Tsume had to shield his eyes.

A huge crack echoed out, and the huge stored amount of static released itself as the most powerful electric attack Tsume had ever seen. The bolt of energy raced straight toward the Muk, and when it came it to contact with it, threw the pokémon more than 50 meters across the field, where it landed with a sickening splat on one of the Team Rocket Helicopters, and proceeded to slide down off the side of the chopper and fell to the floor.

“Forget that!” one of the Rocket Grunts shouted in panic, “I'm getting out of here!” He promptly turned and ran back towards the helicopter, and in a split second, the other rockets were following him. In less than ten seconds, the choppers were taking off and fleeing, leaving only the smell of burnt sewage behind.

Over the next hour, Tsume helped the farmer clean up his house and replace a few of the windows, and the Mareep went back to mindlessly milling about the field, searching for fresh grass to chew on.

The farmers Poochyena were fine, but as Tsume worked, one of the Mareep was following him round, no matter where he went. Eventually, he asked the farmer about it.

“Whys he following you?” the farmer asked? “Isn't it obvious?” Tsume shook his head, confused, “that's the Mareep you cared for during the attack, and it wants to repay the favour, it wants to join you!”

“Really?” Tsume asked, shocked “can I just take him?”

“I'll let you take him on one condition” the farmer smiled, “If you can beat him in a battle”

Tsume stood with Vulpix in front of him in the centre of the enclosed section. Around the edge of the fence, the other Mareep stood and gazed on mindlessly, chewing on fresh grass.

Directly opposite Tsume stood the Mareep. It didn't look so docile now, as small sparks of electricity gathered around it as it prepared for battle.

“OK Vulpix, lets get this on the roll, Ember attack!” As it had done before, Vulpix shot out the inferno, headed straight toward the Mareep. Showing shocking speed and agility, the Mareep dropped down and rolled out of the way, and returned the attack with a thundershock of its own, which just scraped past Vulpix's left flank.

“Vulpix, concentrate, land a strike this time!” Again, Vulpix fired an ember, and again the Mareep managed to dodge. This was repeated again and again, until eventually, Vulpix stopped shooting out the small beads of flame and took a deep breath.

“Vulpix what are you doing?” Tsume said “You can hit it don't worry just keep at it, now attack!”

Across the field, the Mareep was charging up in preparation for another thundershock, but Vulpix was quicker. However, instead of an ember attack, a huge pillar of flame erupted from Vulpix, and created a direct link of fire between Vulpix and Mareep. After the inferno was finished, the Mareep lay passed out on the ground.

“Okay lets try this” Tsume reached for one of the pokéballs on his belt, and depressing the button, the red and white sphere expanded outwards to fill his hand. Taking a stance like he was pitching a baseball, Tsume threw the ball at the downed Mareep, where it impacted, opened, and pulled the Mareep inside. The ball vibrated for a few seconds, but eventually it came to a rest and joy spread throughout Tsume.

“I did it! I caught my first pokémon!”

Re: Tribulations of a Trainer

I should have the next chapter up some point this week, so before i do has anyone got any feedback? I'm kinda just churning these chapters out without any recommendations from anyone, so mistakes will be repeated, hence harder to change the further this goes on etc etc, anyone got anything?

Re: Tribulations of a Trainer

You should check your grammar, you're forgetting (or don't know) to put commas and periods at the end of speech sentences where they would normally go.

For example:

“I'll let you take him on one condition” the farmer smiled, “If you can beat him in a battle”

This should be:

“I'll let you take him on one condition,” the farmer said with a smile. “If you can beat him in a battle.

Your dialogue punctuation seems to be the only problem, though. Besides that, the story's good! Especially the battles. You describe them well.

Re: Tribulations of a Trainer

A few places you have grammar issues and forget to capitalize to begin a quote, but these are minor things that don't necessarily take away from the story itself. I like your use of words and description especially, easy to follow and get into :)

I like Tsume. Keep up the good work!

Chapter 4 :- Showdown in Violet City!

After what seemed like a lifetime from leaving home, a city stretched out in front of Tsume. Skyscrapers stretched up in what seemed to be the centre, and the rest of the buildings radiated out for there like spokes upon a wheel. The further away from the centre the buildings were, the smaller they got, giving the city a stepped effect.

Whilst the skyscrapers in the centre were great monuments of glass, around the edge buildings were made of simple wood, and the hubbub of city life could be heard from the hill on which Tsume stood. Joy crept up inside him, as much as he like travelling, you just couldn't beat the feeling of being in a city.

“At last,” he shouted aloud “Civilisation!” And with Vulpix by his feet, they raced towards Violet City.

By the time Tsume had reached the city centre, he was panting trying to regain his breath, and Vulpix looked equally exhausted from the run.

“Maybe we should try and find somewhere interesting while we're here.” Tsume said to Vulpix, who simply cocked its head as if to say 'you choose'.

Tsume looked around, and the skyscrapers stretched above him like glass highways to the heavens, giving no glimpse of what lay inside. Tsume kept on walking until he reached a gap in the buildings.

A large plaza stretched out in front of him, and was dominated by a large fountain that threw arcs of water straight up like a geyser. Benches circled around the fountain, and many residents sat around enjoying the weather. On the side of the plaza furthest away from Tsume, a building looked out of place.

In the mass of glass that surrounded him, this building stood out because it reminded Tsume of, well, home. It had the same traditional design, with the hardwood walls, small windows and black slate roof, that put it in competition with giants around it. Feeling interested, Tsume decided to go for a closer look.

A glass revolving door stood at the entrance, and Tsume walked in to find himself in a corridor that raced off in both directions, with doors on one side. The walls were made of the same dark wood, but a certain amount of graffiti was etched into the walls, and on closer inspection, Tsume saw that all of it read the same format:

Dave vs Brian : Dave wins
Gina vs Mike : Mike wins

What could this all mean? Feeling confused, he placed Vulpix on his shoulder so she wouldn't go strolling off, and went for a look around. At each of the doors (there numbered about four each spaced about ten metres apart) a glass pane allowed outsiders a peak in.

Looking through the first door, the room reminded Tsume of an empty classroom. Small desks lay evenly spread apart, all facing a blackboard at the far end of the room.

The next two rooms were of a similar lay out, but devoid of any people to take up the seats. Tsume came to the final room, to find it was full.

If he had to guess, Tsume would say the students were about his age, although maybe a little younger. A female teacher stood with her back to Tsume, so all he could pick out of her was the black pencil skirt and crisp white shirt. Blonde hair fell down her back in tumbles, and Tsume thought he glimpsed the arm of a pair of glasses.

One of the students pointed toward him, and the class all looked with him. The teacher also turned around, and for some reason, she looked strangely familiar...

However, before Tsume could think where he knew her from, she strolled over to the door and opened it.

“Hi there, can I help you?” She asked Tsume with a sweet, caring tone.

“Erm, no thanks, I'm just looking around.”

The teacher then noticed Vulpix on Tsume's shoulder. “Ah, your a pokémon trainer! Please come in!”

Tsume hesitated for a moment, unsure, but decided it couldn't hurt and walked in to the classroom. As he stood at the front, all of the students were paying rapt attention to him, waiting for him to say something.

“Ummm, hi, I'm Tsume.” Tsume spoke nervously

“Hi Tsume.” the class chanted back as one.

Tsume blinked, and tried to think of something clever to say, but nothing came to mind, so before he could begin speaking a young boy stood up on his chair.

“Is that a Vulpix?” The boy asked, pointing towards Tsume's pokémon.

Taken aback by the bluntness of the question, it took Tsume to answer “Well, yes, Vulpix here is my first pokémon.”

“Well then.” A girl with thick glasses and pigtails stood up, “Vulpix, as a fire type, is weak to water, rock and ground.” she spoke matter of factly, as if reading the facts out of a textbook.

“Ummm, thanks?” Tsume said, still unsure on how he should be acting.

Before he could gather himself, another student asked “Is that the only pokémon you've got? That's not very impressive is it” the student spoke smugly, and his class mates smiled.

Before Tsume could answer, another question was thrown at him, then another, and another 'where are you from?' 'how old are you?' 'are you doing the pokémon league challenge?'. These were just a fragment of the questions being thrown at him. He was overwhelmed by the sudden wave, and found he couldn't answer.

“Now now students back to your seats.” The teacher spoke, “Its time to continue the lesson.”

The students all sat back down in their seats, pulled out pens, pencils and paper and all gazed straight forward, ready to learn.

“Tsume, you are welcome to join us if you please.”

Tsume considered it, and glanced at Vulpix on his shoulder. The small pokémon paid little attention, and began to clean its paws. “Yeah, okay, I'll stay for a while.” Tsume circled around the desks and sat at the back of the classroom, and listened as the teacher began her lesson.

The lesson went on, and the teacher explained some of the basics of pokémon, and began to teach type advantages and disadvantages. This was a long list, and Tsume knew there was no way he would remember it all, so he simply began to scratch Vulpix underneath the chin, which she seemed to like.

After about 15 minutes, a bell rang. The class began to pack away their things, and filed out of the class.

“It's break time Tsume” the teacher told him, “But I'm sure that the students will be interested to see your pokémon.”

“Okay, I'll go out and mingle shall I?”

With that Tsume followed the students, and the turned back out into the large plaza where the pupils split off into friendship groups and began to chat amongst themselves.

A young girl separated herself from her friends and came over to Tsume. The girl was about the same age as him, yet she walked with a confidence above her years. Her hair was short cut, and coloured a soft blue. Her eyes were a light green, and she wore a simple jeans and red shirt combo, giving her quite a plain appearance.

“Can I see your other pokémon?” She asked, without even pausing to introduce herself.

“Yeah sure, why not” Tsume saw no harm in it, so he pulled out his pokéball and released Mareep. Upon materialising, the sheep like pokémon sat next to Vulpix, looking around its new surroundings.

“Oh wow a Mareep!” The girl went and stroked the pokémon on the head, and it baaed contently, but continued to look around the plaza, “Why is it looking around like that?”

“It's probably looking for some grass to munch on.” Tsume answered, so he pulled some poké food out of his back pack and split it between his two pokémon, and they began to tuck in to there meal.

“I'm Jane” the girl said, “you wanna sit down?” she indicated a bench off near the side of the school.

“Yeah sure, why not, I've been doing nothing but travelling since I left home”, Together, they walked over to the bench, and sat down. The bench was hard, and not very comfortable, yet compared to walking for endless miles, it could have been a king size luxury bed.

“Just out of curiosity, where is home” Jane asked

“I'm from Ecruteak” Tsume replied, “I'm on my way to New Bark town”

“Oh, to see Professor Elm?”

This answer confused Tsume, how could she possibly no that?

She laughed, evidently the confusion had shown on his face, “Well there's nothing else in New Bark Town!” Tsume began to laugh with her, and whilst they were enjoying themselves, Tsume's pokémon came back, and Vulpix sat on his lap whilst Mareep lay down at their feet. “Your pokémon are great.” and she went to stroke Mareep.

“No wait!” Tsume reached out for her arm, but it was to late, she ran her hand through the pokémon's thick wool as Tsume's hand came into contact with hers, so the static shock coursed through both their bodies.

“Ouch!” She exclaimed, “Why didn't that happen before?”

“I think” Tsume answered, “It's because you ran you hand through its back, where the wool is, and therefore where most of the static is generated and stored”

“Wow,” Jane replied, sounding impressed, “Your like a walking talking pokédex aren't ya!”

They both began to chuckle again, getting on well. The conversation continued, and Jane revealed she had been enrolled in the pokémon school by her parents, who didn't want her wandering off into the wide world all by herself.

“I'm not a bad trainer though!” She snapped quickly after revealing this information, “I've even got my own pokémon, look!” and with that, she pulled out a pokéball and released her pokémon.

The pokémon appeared with its back to Tsume and Jane, so all they could see was its thick, scaly back which was coloured like sand. The pokémon then turned around and jumped into Jane's arms. “Shrew!” it exclaimed happily.

“A Sandshrew?” getting a better view of it, Tsume could see that it looked like a small mouse, with a thick hide. It had sharp looking claws that glinted in the sun.
“Yep” Jane replied happily, “Was the first pokémon I caught, well, the only pokémon I ever caught.” Sandshrew jumped of Jane's lap and curled up into a ball, roughly the size of a basketball. Jane sighed, “All he ever seems to do is sleep though.”

The pair continued to chat about pokémon, with no real direction to the conversation, and they were interrupted by the teacher coming outside. She looked over at the pair, and suddenly Tsume recognised her.

“You!” Tsume exclaimed, “Your a rocket!”

Jane laughed, “How can someone be a rocket Tsume?”

“No, she's a member of Team Rocket!”

The Teacher smiled, “I thought you would never figure it out, god you must be stupid.”

“I challenge you to a battle!” Tsume shouted, “Lets go Mareep!” Tsume took up a proud pose, but his pokémon did not appear. The 'Teacher' laughed again, and Tsume turned around to see his Mareep had found a tuft of grass, and was happily grazing. Tsume had never felt so embarrassed, evidently, this Mareep needed some training.

“MAREEP” Tsume shouted, and the pokémon gave one last chew of the grass, before ambling over to where Tsume stood. “Now, lets battle!”

“Why?” the rocket said bluntly, “What have I got to gain, and beside, my boss is here now.” she smirked knowingly, and strolled over to the of the plaza.

Suddenly, impacts could be heard, along with the roars of a pokémon, followed by the screaming of people. From the far side of the plaza, a huge orange blur leapt across the distance with ease, and landed behind the female rocket.

The pokémon was much bigger than Tsume, easily reaching 7 feet from paw to head. It stood on all fours, and was standing proud and regal. It resembled a cross between a dog and a lion, and whilst most of its body was orange, with a few black stripes, a large cream mane stretched from its face to its back, forming a large tail.

“An Arcanine!” Jane said in wonder, “I never thought I'd see one!”

A human jumped down from the back of the pokémon, and was garbed in a black shawl. As he dismounted from the Arcanine, a large red R was emblazoned on his back, signifying that he was a member of Team Rocket. All of his features were hidden by a black hood, meaning that he could not be identified.

Upon his arrival, the Rocket who had been posing as a Teacher saluted “Executive Neutron!, I'm ready for orders!” It may have been Tsume's imagination, but it sounded like fear was present in her voice.

The executive looked over to her, “Prepare to leave, I have what I need” his voice was cold, and showed no emotion, or no remorse.

“Oh no you don't!” Tsume ran forward, “I'm not gonna just let you leave!” Sirens could now be heard, and were getting louder by the second.

“Don't kid yourself boy,” Neutron replied, “I don't want to hurt your pokémon”

“Ha, they can look after themselves!” Tsume was shaking in anger now, this rocket didn't even consider him a threat, well he'd prove him wrong, “Go Mareep! Thundershock!”

The small pokémon ran forward, leapt into the air, and released a bolt of electricity straight at the Arcanine. The large pokémon didn't even move, it just simply stood there. The bolt of electricity therefore hit it straight on, but after the shock, the pokémon didn't even seem affected.

“Fine then” Neutron spoke, “If you won't listen to reason, Arcanine go! Use Fire Fang!” The Arcanine leapt forward, and its gaping mouth was filled with fire. In less than a second, it landed a terrible bite to the back of Mareep, picked up the much smaller pokémon, and threw it over to Tsume's feet. Mareep was knocked out.

“No way!” Tsume was scared, that Arcanine was clearly strong, but he had to stop them from leaving so the police could get them. He knelt down beside Vulpix, “Look buddy, I doubt you can take that pokémon, but you might be able to hold it off just long enough for the police to get here, okay?”

Vulpix gazed into Tsume's eyes, then slowly nodded. Vulpix then stepped forward, and as the Arcanine stepped away, she barked a challenge in its direction.

“Oh, you still want to battle boy?” Neutron laughed now, “Haven't learnt your lesson? Very well Arcanine, use Flamethrower!”

“Vulpix, Flamethrower!”

The two fire attacks streaked towards each other at breakneck speed, and impacted dead on directly between the two fire types. A huge explosion echoed throughout the plaza, and fire leapt out in all directions, forcing people to hide behind anything possible as fire fell from the sky.

“ Vulpix, keep it up!” The small Fox pokémon was trying its hardest, but the Arcanine was just too strong, after little more than ten seconds, Vulpix could no longer keep it up, and the inferno bellowing from her mouth ended, and the without the energy left to move, the attack struck her dead on, flinging her like a rag doll across the plaza toward Tsume.

Tsume ran forward and caught his pokémon.

“Vuuuulpiix?” A questionable tone was in the pokémon's voice, as if it asked 'did I do good?'

“Rest now Vulpix” Tsume said, hating to see his pokémon in this state, “You did great.” Tsume glared over at Neutron, who stood next to his Arcanine.

“Well boy, you certainly have guts” He said to Tsume, “We could use someone like you in our organisation.”

“Never!” Tsume replied, “and it looks like your days in the organisation are over!”

Police cars pulled up all around the plaza, and Officers with their Growlithes were racing over and surrounded the Rockets.

“Recall your pokémon, and put your hands up!” One of the officers shouted.

“I don't think so” Neutron replied, “Arcanine, deal with these mutts.”

The Arcanine growled, and the Growlithes quaked in fear, they were too scared to listen as the officers ordered them to attack. Neutrons pokémon inhaled, and began bellowing out great streams of fire with such force that the Growlithes never stood a chance. In less than ten seconds, all of the officers pokémon had been knocked out.

“Now, we will take our leave” Neutron said.

Suddenly, a great bird call echoed throughout the plaza, and a blur raced down along the skyscrapers and landed on the roof of the school. The bird was huge, its plumage stretched from the back of its head to way beyond the base of its feet. Keen eyes surveyed the scene below it, and its sharp talons looked like they could punch through the thickest of metal with minimal effort.

On the new arrivals back sat its trainer. Windswept hair covered half his face, leaving only a lone blue eye exposed. He wore a simple robe, coloured a light blue with a cream cloth belt knotted across his waist. He wore traditional shoes, and he had the appearance, like his pokémon, of a bird of prey surveying its next meal.

“It's Falkner!” The female rocket exclaimed, “Boss shall we take him?”

Neutron seemed to consider it for a second, but finally he answered.

“No.”

The female Rockets face fell into shock

“But boss we could take him he's only a …....”

“I said no!” anger crept into his voice “We are leaving, now.” And with a final swish of his cape, both of the rockets leapt upon the back of the Arcanine, “We will continue our search for Entei elsewhere!” And with a final bark of warning to the stunned onlookers, Arcanine raced out of the plaza at breakneck pace, and without resistance.

So? whats the verdict? Rate, review, critise whatever!

Re: Tribulations of a Trainer

Right it's been a while, but here goes

Chapter 5
New Bark Town!

It had taken a week since setting off from home, but finally, Tsume had reached his destination. New Bark Town. From the hilltop from where he stood, he could see the entirety of the sleepy village. He sat down on the grassy knoll, and Vulpix curled up on his lap. Since the defeat by Neutrons Arcanine, she had been in quite a sulk, obviously annoyed that she had been defeated for the first time.

“Don't worry about it Vulpix”, Tsume reassured his pokémon, “You did the best you could, I can't expect you to defeat such as powerful pokémon.” This seemed to cheer the fox pokémon up a bit, and Tsume proceeded to scratch underneath her chin as he looked forward.

Tsume had heard that New Bark town was small, but he didn't quite imagine it would be this small. 7 small houses lay spread out evenly in a forest clearing, and were all identical, except for the fact that some had blue slated roofs, whereas other had green. The town was dominated by a larger building at the top of a hill, which Tsume guessed was the Professors lab, as nothing else stood out to him.

There were no concrete paths between the buildings, just simple mud tracks, not to different to paths that cut there way across the countryside. The whole town had an appearance of fitting in with nature, as plants grew freely around the buildings, with most gardens being full of flowers and other shrubbery, and the sound of children's laughter could faintly be heard.

“Okay then Vulpix” Tsume spoke to his pokémon as he pulled himself to his feet, “Lets go get this pokédex, race ya!” And on that challenge, pokémon and trainer raced down the path towards New Bark Town.

Vulpix ended up having to be carried some of the way, so she took up a perch on Tsume's shoulder, an after a further twenty minutes of walking, Tsume reached the town. A dirt track lay ahead of him, leading all the way to the largest building.

“I suppose that's the lab Vulpix, shall we go straight there or have a look around first?”

As Tsume paused to take a breath and wandered where to go from here, a small pokémon raced out of some bushes and onto the path. It paused in front of Tsume and stared up at him and Vulpix.

The pokémon resembled a small mouse, and was roughly spherical in shape. Its underside was white, and its large round ears stuck up like satellite dishes from the top of its head. A spiky tail rose up from its back with a blue bubble at the end.

“Marill?” went the pokémon, “Marill MARILL” the pokémon sounded happy, and it went bounding off down the street towards the building Tsume had presumed was the lab.

Before Tsume could even process what had just happened, a small girl came tearing onto the path from the same bushes that the Marill had appeared from. The girl appeared very flustered, her knees were grazed and her arms were covered with scratches and bruises. She spun around on the spot, evidently looking for something, and her thick brown hair was plastered to her head by sweat. After a few moments, she noticed Tsume standing there.

“You” she said quickly, taking Tsume aback, “Have you seen my Marill?”

“Erm, it ran off down there” Tsume gestured towards the large building at the end of the road.

“Nooooo!” the girl replied, “If the Professor catches Marill in there again I'll be for it!” and without another word, the girl bounded down the street, presumably after her pokémon.

Supposing he might as well head to the lab, Tsume strolled down the street after the girl, though at a much more leisurely pace. During the stroll, Vulpix had jumped down from his shoulder and was walking along side him.

As Tsume entered the lab, he was take aback from the sheer amount of papers that lay everywhere. From where he stood at the front door, he could count at least 30 different papers on pokémon, most seemed to be focused on eggs and breeding.

Large white cabinets stood horizontally across the room, full of books and research papers, but also making an impromptu wall across the room, blocking the other side of the lab from view. To his right, a man was studying the cabinets, evidently in deep thought.

The man was evidently a scientist, as his white lab coat and large glasses spoke louder than words, and a mess of black hair stood upon his head, sticking up like the back of a sandslash. As the door closed shut behind Tsume, the man looked around.

“Can I help you?” He enquired.

“Ummm,” Tsume replied, “I'm looking for a Professor Elm, is he around?”

“Ah yes of course he is” the scientist replied happily, “He's just in the back, go on through.” and upon saying this, he gestured to a gap in the cabinets, and proceeded to restudy the cabinets, continuing his search.

As Tsume walked through, he heard voices coming from ahead.

“I don't know how many times I have to tell you Lyra!” Came a stern sounding voice, “If you can't keep a rein on your pokémon how can you expect to be a pokémon trainer?”

“I did keep a rein on him!” replied a girls voice, “We we're playing chase and Marill was running away! It's not my fault he got away! And besides, you could consider it to be, ummmmmmm, speed training.”

“MARILL!”

“I'm not buying that Lyra” came a new voice, “ I think your losing control of the pokémon I gave you.”

“Shut up bro!” Lyra replied angrily, “I wasn't asking you to get involved!”

Hearing enough, Tsume and Vulpix rounded the corner to see this for themselves. The girl from the street stood there, defiant, chest puffed forward with a furious look on her face, a look which her Marill was trying to impersonate. She stood facing to men, well, a teenager and a man.

The man could only be the Professor. He looked quite scrawny and large glasses dominated his face. He wore a typical white lab coat over a blue shirt and green trousers. His light brown hair had a spiky tuft at the top, and he had his arms crossed with a frown on his face, looking none to impressed. However, Tsume's attention was pulled to the other occupant of the lab.

He wore thigh high red leather boots, simple dark jeans, and a jacket the same shade of red as his footwear. His thick brown hair was the same tone as Lyra's, but was pulled into an elegant spike above his forehead. Upon his waist sat 6 pokéballs.

A true trainer, Tsume thought, and he stood in awe. The argument would have continued, but the trainer noticed Tsume standing there.

“You got company Professor” he said casually, and nodded in Tsume's direction. All eyes turned to Tsume, and he felt himself blush, he was so embarrassed, yet he didn't know why. He hated being the centre of attention.

“Can I help you young man?” Elm asked, yet before Tsume could reply, Lyra jumped into the conversation.

“Hey, ain't you the boy I met on the road earlier? You told me where Marill was right? Of course you did, oh and look you have a Vulpix! How cute, personally I don't like fire types but she is just adorable, where did you get her....” Lyra continued to babble on, and seemed to not even pause for breath, until the teen Tsume guessed was her brother stepped forward and gave her a firm slap to the back of the head.

Lyra recoiled forward, “What did you do that for? You know your not supposed to hit me mom said so!”

“Well mom's not here is she?”

“Oh yeah, well I'll stop you myself” Lyra pulled herself up to her full height and pointed with all the authority she could muster “Marill use hydro pump!” she stayed in the same pose, evidently waiting for her pokémon to attack. “What the?” she spun around, only to see her Marill looking confused.

Her brother sighed, “You've done absolutely no training, yet you expect him to know hydro pump? You are stupid!” He then began laughing.

“Am not! Shut up!”

Tsume stood there, feeling bemused as the events unfolded in front of him. Elm looked equally bemused, but he beckoned Tsume over with a finger. Tsume and Vulpix strolled over.

“Sorry about those two” the Professor said. “Daniel has just returned from the Sinnoh region you see, yet the rivalry between siblings hasn't died down, so we could be waiting hours for those two to stop arguing.”

“Right” Tsume replied, still not quite sure what was happening.

“How can I help you then?”

Tsume explained his situation to the Professor, about what happened at home, why he was here for a pokédex, and the whole while the pair kept arguing in the background, paying no attention to neither Elm or Tsume.

“Ah, your the trainer from Ecruteak!” Elm exclaimed, sounding happy. “Yes I have your pokédex right here” he turned around and picked up a small red device, which almost looked like a flip style phone. He took Tsume's trainer card, and scanned it through the pokédex.

“There all done, this pokédex is ready to go” The Professor informed Tsume, and handed over the device. “Why don't you give it a whirl?”

Before Tsume could answer, a whoosh filled the lab, accompanied by a blinding white light. Tsume stood around to see a new resident in the lab. It looked like a more beefier version of Marill, and it was evidently well trained. It had the same blue shade body as a Marill, except for the bottom half was snow white, almost as white as a pokéball. It ears were larger, as was its tail and the accompanying bobble.

“Azumarill, show my baby sister a real Hydro Pump!”

“Azumarill” obeyed Daniel's pokémon, and fired a high pressure jet of water at Lyra's Marill. Luckily, the Marill managed to dodge aside from the stream, and lay on the floor cowering. Lyra shouted out, grief stricken, and picked up her pokémon, shielding it from further harm. The siblings then proceeded to continue arguing, this time with the cries of their pokémon involved in the racket.

“Aren't you going to try and stop them?” Tsume asked Elm. “That Azumarill looks like it could really do some damage to your lab”

“Yes I suppose so,” Elm replied, “Okay you two, if your going to continue arguing, go home, I won't have my lab flooded again. Daniel, here is your pokédex, thank you for the information on Sinnoh evolutionary chains, that will be all.”

“Cheers Prof” Daniel replied, “See ya later! Come on sis lets go home.”

Tsume watched astounded as at an instant the brother and sister stopped arguing and walked out the lab like best friends, even their pokémon getting along, with Marill riding on Azumarill's shoulders.

“What just happened?” Asked a confused Tsume, Vulpix also cocked her head, looking equally confused. But Elm just laughed.

“Those two have been fighting since the day I gave them both those eggs.” He finally stated, still chuckling. “The two eggs hatched into Azurill, and from that day, they have been trying to outdo each other. Daniel left to become a trainer and took on the league challenge, whereas Lyra, being younger, was left behind. I think she's jealous, but she starts her own journey soon, she's of age in a few weeks, which I think has refuelled the rivalry.”

“Wow” Tsume replied, now understanding a bit more.

“Now from here, I recommend you go to Violet city” The professor said. “There you will find the first gym on the route to the pokémon league. Defeat the gym leader, earn your badge, become the best trainer you can be!”

“I will Professor!” Tsume said, now filled with eagerness. He had everything he needed. The pokédex, the pokémon, and the determination to be the best!

Not quite the same as the other chapters, but still necessary i believe. Its been a while so was difficult for me to get back into the flow of writing, especially as my original notes and drafts have disapeared lol.

so whateva, rate, review, critise. I'm open to suggestions and will start work on the next chapter in the next few days!

Re: Tribulations of a Trainer

Chapter 6: An Old Foe!

Tsume was over the moon. He had his pokédex, and in the two days from leaving New Bark Town, he and his pokémon had been in training. In the open plains between New Bark Town and Cherrygrove, he had found shade underneath a tree, where he and Vulpix were having a well deserved rest.

“Today Vulpix, I want to have a look over there.” Tsume told his pokémon, gesturing in the direction of some cliffs to the north. “What do ya say? Shall we have a look around for some new training areas?”
“Pix!” His pokémon replied eagerly, and it began running toward the mountain range. This kept Tsume's spirits high, as he was glad to know that his pokémon were as willing as he was to train and explore.

It took little more than half an hour for the two to run the distance, and when he had set off from home, the run would have left him on the floor, panting for breath, whereas now it only slightly fatigued him. The same could be said for Vulpix, when they had started off, she was like a pampered pooch, whereas now she was leaner, fitter, and her coat had a healthy sheen to it. Even though they were improving, the pair still stopped when the reached the cliff face.

“Wow, Vulpix, I wasn't expecting this....”

The Cliff face rose straight up into the sky, a sheer granite wall shielding an unknown world behind, blocking even the sun. To both the left and the right, it stretched seemingly endlessly in both directions.

“Well, your choice Vulpix, whichever way you wanna go.”

Vulpix made her choice, and walked parallel to the cliff face, engulfed in its shadow. Tsume kept close, but eventually the ledge above hung over them, putting them in total darkness.

This is ridiculous, Tsume thought, “Vulpix, hang on a sec, I can't see a thing.” Groping around in the dark, Tsume found what he was looking for, “This should put a light on the situation,
go Mareep!”

The small sheep like pokémon appeared, and as Tsume had been counting on, the light on its tail illuminated the area, and the shadows were chased away giving Tsume a clear look at his surroundings again. The harsh walls were no longer smooth, they were jagged and cracked, casting crooked shadows onto the rock face. The grass as Tsume feet had been replaced by a rough shale type substance, with little in the way of plant life in any direction.

“Good job Mareep” Tsume told his pokémon, “Now go ahead and follow Vulpix.”

Mareep baaaed contently, and bounced forward to join Vulpix, a few metres ahead of Tsume. Tsume lent down and picked up a pebble at his feet. It looked strange, blackened, yet smooth. What kind of stone was this?

With a new found light source, the party headed forward, until Vulpix stopped. “Vulpix vul!”

“What have you found Vulpix?” Tsume came forward to find his pokémon at a cave entrance, both of them staring in intently. As Tsume neared the cave, a wave of heat hit him.

The inexplicable heat seemed to radiate from the cave, a heat with no visible source. Before Tsume had time to contemplate this however, Vulpix ran into the cave, leaving him behind.

“Vulpix wait!” Tsume called, but to no avail. “Come on Mareep” and the pair ran into the cave after Vulpix.

The further Tsume got into the cave, the warmer it began. Soon, a red glow baked the walls from up ahead, and his clothes began to stick to his body from sweat. His hair clung to his head like a helmet, and Mareeps breath became laboured.

“Mareep, return” Tsume panted, recalling his pokémon, “Its too hot for you in here.”

Pushing Forward, Tsume came to a large opening in the cave, and found the source of the heat.

A molten river of lave meandered its way through what appeared to be a large opening in the cave system. The lave was a deep red, and was constantly flowing, and was only broken up by the odd piece of rock floating along with the current.

In the middle of the lava river sat an outcrop of rock, linked to where Tsume stood by what appeared to be stepping stones. The 'island' barely rose a few feet above the surface of the lava flow, and was made up of a collection of smaller stones which seemed to be being deposited by the flow every so often. On the island sat Vulpix, and a collection of other smaller pokémon, each identical.

Each of the pokémon was covered in a thick brown fur, and had a long thick mane covering their necks. Plates that looked like a grey metal protruded from their backs, which surrounded a grey billowing 'cape', which gave it the look smoke issuing out of a crater. A Stripe of cream fur came down the centre of their chests, and their white paws were separated from the rest of the body by thick black bands on the leg. The face was red, in the shape of a star, with a yellow three pointed crest on its forehead., with a metal plate that looked like a handlebar moustache. The pokémon were like a large dog, or a small lion....

“Wait a minute,” Tsume said, “those look like....” Shock filled Tsume's system, how had he, a small boy from Ecruteak found not only one legendary, but about 5? Before he could think about what to do in this situation, he heard footsteps from behind him.

“What!” came a wizened old voice from behind him, “Who are you? How did you get in here?”

Tsume turned around to face the new arrival, and if he was shocked at the pokémon, nothing prepared him for this.

An old woman, stood in front of him, hunched over so much she barely came up to Tsume chest in height. She wore a hooded, blood red robe with no ornament, except for a lone flame on the chest. She had a walking stick, well, it was more like a staff as it stood taller than she did, in her hands, and she clung onto it for dear life. Her face was deeply wrinkled, and shoots of grey hair could be seen underneath the hood.

“Who are....” Before Tsume could finish, the old woman moved with an unnatural speed, knocked him off his feet with the staff, and pinned him to the floor with the butt of it.

“I don't know who you are” The old woman croaked at Tsume, “Or how you got here, but you need to leave. Now.”

Tsume gulped, he had never been so scared in his life, “Please maam,” Tsume managed to reply, “I'm only in here because of my pokémon, look.” and on this, Tsume gestured over the lave toward where his Vulpix was playing with the other pokémon.

“Your a pokémon trainer?” The woman asked, bringing her face right next to Tsume's, “And that's your Vulpix?” Tsume just nodded, too scared to speak. “Hmph” and on that, the old woman removed the staff and held it horizontal. Tsume just stared at it blankly, “Do you want me to help you up or not? You can stay on the floor as long as you like!”

Tsume clicked, and he took to offered help and pulled himself to his feet.

“Now, introductions are in order.” The woman said, “You first” and she prodded Tsume in the chest with her staff.

“Oh right,” Tsume answered, and rubbed his hands together, “I'm Tsume, from Ecruteak, and that Vulpix over there,” he gestured over to the island, “Is my starter pokémon, and my friend.”

The old woman huffed again, “Right, then, I am Eleanor, and for my whole life I have been the guardian of this cave, well, me and my friend that is...”

“Your friend....?” before Tsume could finish, the old woman put her left hand up her right sleeve, and pulled out an ancient looking pokéball.

“Come on out my friend!”

A new arrival entered the cave, and brought with it a fresh heat source. The pokémon stood in what could only be described as a human style stance, yet it had the face of a duck. The body was read with a pattern of a yellow flame around it, and its yellow tail had a flame on the end of it. Its arms were covered in red rigid scales and ended in five red fingers. It had a further two flames atop its forehead, and a yellow beak.

“What is that?” Tsume mumbled under his breath, and whipped out his pokédex.

Pointing the pokédex at the pokémon, a computerised voice read out: Magmar, the Spitfire Pokémon. Its body is like a furnace, making Magmar a living inferno. It has been discovered only near active volcanoes.

“A Magmar huh,” and seeing how his pokédex worked on this pokémon, he pointed it at the pokémon Vulpix was with.

Pokédex entry not found

“Huh that's weird”

Eleanor on the other hand, simply laughed, “Your pokédex won't have information on legendary pokémon, now will it?”

“I guess not....”

“Well, I'll put your out of your misery shall I,” Eleanor told Tsume, “Those are Entei”, upon hearing this Tsume gasped, “But not just any Entei” She continued, “New born Entei.”

“New born Entei? How? I thought that...” Tsume blabbered off, in truth he didn't know what he thought.

“What, that they just appeared from somewhere? That Arceus or Ho-oh created them all? Grow up boy.” Eleanor laughed again, and Tsume blushed at his foolishness, “Only one Entei can lay the eggs, and that is the original Entei, the one create by Ho-oh. This Entei is much stronger and wiser than the rest of its kind. Only once an age, does it lay the eggs, eggs that must be laid in a lava flow. I, am the guardian of this cave, as was my mother before me, and her mother before her, and so on and so on.”

It was a lot for Tsume to grasp, in fact it shook the very fabric of his understanding. Before he could ask any more questions, a strange sound punctuated the silence of the cave.

“What is that?” Tsume asked.

“Shush” Eleanor replied, “Just listen.”

Above the sounds of the playing pokémon, the sound got louder and louder, a strange high pitched whirring sound, a sound that sounded almost like a......

“Its a drill!” Eleanor said, “Someone is trying to break into the cave!”

Both of them looked around intently, looking for the source of the noise. Over the far side of the cave, bits of rubble began to fall, cracking the surface of the rock. Both Eleanor and Tsume ran to it, Tsume calling Vulpix over on the way. Eleanor ordered her Magmar out in front of her, and the Entei watched intently from the island.

All of a sudden the drilling stopped. Nothing could be heard but a slight tapping noise. This then stopped, silence filled the cave, only the soft bubbling of the lave could be heard.

All of a sudden, a huge explosion ripped through the cave, flinging Tsume, Eleanor and their pokémon across the lava, where they landed on the island inhabited by the Entei.

Pulling himself to his feet, Tsume looked over to where they had been standing, but where there was a wall there was now a gaping whole, filled by a huge pokémon cast in shadow. The pokémon stepped forward, and resembled a huge rock with legs and a drill horn. Thick orange plates covered its hide, and it had a thick, club like tale.

“Good job Rhyperior.” came a voice, a very familiar voice...

“Neutron!” Tsume gasped, “What are you doing here?”

Neutron climbed up the back of Rhyperior, so he was at a point where Tsume had to look up to see him clearly. “Well, I'm here for those beautiful pokémon behind you.” Tsume glanced behind him, to see the 5 Entei all sitting there, looking on at the scene of carnage in front of them. “And unless you have got massively stronger since we last met, you aren't going to be able to stop me!” Neutron laughed menacingly, “Now Rhyperior forward! Get those Entei for me!” Neutron dismounted his pokémon, and stood back, where it also turned out his Arcanine was standing.

“I don't think so!” came Eleanor 's voice, Tsume spun around to see the old woman pulling herself to her feet, “Go Magmar!”

Eleanor pokémon leapt out from the lava flow, and had a furious look on its face. It stood between the much larger Rhyperior and the baby Entei.

“You think you can stop me crone?” Neutron laughed again, “Rhyperior, use Megahorn!”

“Magmar, Fire Blast!”

The Rhyperior levelled its head and began to charge at Magmar, running through the lava flow unperturbed, rushing straight toward Magmar. Magmar stood its ground, and bellowed out a huge X of fire toward the charging pokémon, an attack which nearly blinded Tsume in its ferocity. Even though Magmar was at a type disadvantage, its attack lifted the colossal Rock type of its feet and flung it across the cave until it landed back in the breach it had created.

“What!” Neutron roared, “That's not possible! Rhyperior, get back up you weakling!”

The huge pokémon pulled itself to its feet, albeit slowly. It was clearly hurt, yet it followed its masters commands.

“Now, use Rock throw!”

The Rhyperior roared, and ripped a huge rock out of the debris from the breach, and flung the rock at Magmar.

“Magmar, avoid that attack, jump into the lava!”
Magmar jumped sideways and dived in to the lava like a diver into a pool. The rock throw missed, and Rhyperior was glaring at the lava, waiting for its prey to surface.

“Now, Fire Punch!”

Magmar leapt out of the lava like a salmon, zooming toward the rock type. Rhyperior, steadied itself, pushing is feet out wide. Magmar's attack landed with a such a force that Tsume felt the shock-waves, and chucked up a cloud of dust that obscured the pokémon form view.

After around 20 seconds (though it felt like a lifetime), the dust cleared, to show both pokémon still standing, grappling in hand to hand combat. Without instruction, the two pokémon had taken it upon themselves to duke it out. Whilst Magmar had the advantage in speed, Rhyperior could take the smaller pokémon's hits, and when it landed a blow, deal massive damage.

“Enough of this!” Neutron bellowed, “Use Horn Drill!”

Rhyperior's drill horn on its forehead began to spin at breakneck speed, becoming just a blur. Levelling its head again, it gored Magmar and flung it across the cave. The attack was devastating, there was no way Magmar could take a blow like that and recover.

Eleanor cried out, and ran across to her battered pokémon, sobbing.

Tsume stood there, panicking. He knew he was no match for Neutron, yet he couldn't just let him take the Entei.

“Vulpix, Flamethrower!”

Tsume's pokémon ran forward and put its full strength into its attack. The inferno blasted the Rhyperior right in the chest, yet after the attack, it was clear it had no effect Neutron's pokémon.

“Is that all you got kid?” Neutron laughed again, “Now step aside before you get hurt again.”

“You know I can't do that Neutron” Tsume replied defiantly, “ I can't let you take the Entei.”

“Let me?” Neutrons voice was full of rage, “You can't stop be boy! No one can!”

Neutron pulled out a rope and threw it to Rhyperior.

“Tie them up, then grab the Entei.”

As much as Tsume tried to resist, it was pointless. The pokémon tied him to Vulpix, and tied that pair to Eleanor and Magmar (who was still unconscious).

The Entei were then tied together, and Neutron put them on the back of his Arcanine. He then recalled his Rhyperior. “Well kid it was nice meeting you again, see ya!” and with that, he jumped onto Arcanine, and raced out of the cave.

“I will stop you Neutron” Tsume told himself. “No matter what, I'll stop you.”

Re: Tribulations of a Trainer

Ok, one thing...I believe in Chapter One his mission is t go to Prof. Elm. However, in Chapter 3, it says
“Errrrm, yes I'm a pokémon trainer, I'm on my way to New Bark Town to meet Professor Birch.” Tsume replied “I'm quite a new trainer and Vulpix here” Almost on queue Vulpix strolled up to the farmer with an inquisitive look in it eye “is my only pokémon”
Also, as a review. I find that your Chapter length is quite good. There are a few grammar errors, but nothing too major (in other words, nothing I notice on the first go). The overall plot line is quite refreshing, and I think that this story could go far.
I like the continuity with the names. Also, I'm thankful that you didn't have him start with Bellsprout...oh Arceus, that would have been nasty.
It's good that you're portraying your characters as pretty strong for their level, but totally outclassed in some ways. However, you may want to tone down Rhyperior's strength a bit, or it won't make sense if he's ever beaten.
Overall, I give it an 8.5/10 so far! Keep in mind that I'm being quite harsh when I say that :).
In other words, great job! I'm gonna follow this fic from now on.

Re: Tribulations of a Trainer

I have to say that this fanfic is great. I agree with Magnus Prime about the character strength and that is definitely good. Some grammar mistakes can be found but what I'm going to say about them will be simply reiterating the point made by others: they take nothing from the story. Keep writing!

Re: Tribulations of a Trainer

ooops cheers about the points of the professor lol
probs because im constantly gettin the two mixed up so cheers for the spot Magnus
As for Ryperior it was needed for him to appear so strong, trust me its all taken into account, but thanks for the point anyway
I prefer pokemon to hit above there level as it allows me to give more creative ways of winning, rather than
vulpix used flamethrower, foe fainted, battle over yay
:)
next chapter should be up next week at some point i hope
