Issued by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) at 5PM EDT :

...TROPICAL STORM BARRY FORMS IN THE GULF OF MEXICO...

AT 5 PM EDT...2100 UTC... A TROPICAL STORM WARNING HAS BEEN ISSUED
FOR THE WEST COAST OF FLORIDA FROM BONITA BEACH NORTHWARD TO KEATON
BEACH...AND A TROPICAL STORM WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FROM NORTH OF
KEATON BEACH TO ST. MARKS.

Impressive. Much Impressive.

The season isn't even 24 hours old, and we've already used up the first two names of the list, both of them threatening landfall (not that THREATENING is really an appropriate term here, but...) in the United States too.

For the record, Barry is the third-earliest second storm of the year in recorded history. Tropical Storm 2 of 1887 (formed May 17) and Hurricane Two of 1908 (formed May 24) are the first and second, respectively.

At present it "threatens" to make landfall over Florida (Not that the Floridans are feeling threatened. In fact, if anything those i've seen posting around seems positively ecstasic at the thought of an incoming rainstorm. They're that desperate over the ongoing drought).

Maybe this will put those wildfires out. It'll be the happiest tropical storm on record.

It looks like it'll wash out the smoke too.

Barring Wilma like strengthening it looks like we will not have Hurricane Barry so the main impact should be rain.

It's nice to see a tropical system doing more good than harm. Andrea actually caused more grief because it fanned and flames and brought little rain. However, we have a long season ahead of us.

Since the first and second earliest tropical storms came before named Barry is the earliest "B" storm in the Atlantic.

Since I'm in the reinsurance industry, :roots for damage: :D

It gives us something to do in between screwing up elections and complaining about the heat.

When I drove to the west coast this past weekend, the smoke from the fires in the Everglades partially obscured the interstate.

I'd never thought I'd see the day when so many people were ecstatic over the arrival of a tropical storm, including myself. I know it has not been as bone dry around here as most parts of Florida, but we still need the rain just as bad. I can't wait for those remnants.

Yeah, a little rain would be nice to have down here in Florida. If it becomes a hurricane though, then we might have problems.

It has begun....once again

hopefully we won't have another Katrina, thats what we need, the Bush dynasty screwing up again

Hey, now, no pessimism.

Sure, we've had a lot of storms to date, but they're small fry all of them. :).

Luis, you're a fucking idiot. And Damian, pessimism is awesome and profitable :D

Yeah, but optimism annoys you :p
