I am blown away, but at the same time thoroughly unsurprised. a lot of file formats do way more than most people know about. (example: MNG is usually called 'animated PNG', but you can use it for things like image rollovers with absolutely zero rollover code in the browser.)

of course this is still extremely impractical and renders pretty slowly for me, and is by no means any reason to use GIF over PNG, but apparently it can be done.
 
I remember that picture. Maybe the animation could be sped up a bit - it seems artificial to delay it.
 
I'm not entirely sure what's going on there; I know Firefox doesn't insert minimum delays into GIF frames (as I've had several people complain that their anigifs go "too fast" in Firefox because whatever idiot made them had delays of like 10ms), and I'm not even entirely sure if a GIF with several image blocks can have delays between them. that wouldn't make a ton of sense. I guess the guy who made the image could have done it, but why would he? we can see it's a GIF...
