I'll add a poll later.

In every Pokemon Game, we can't skip tutorials - especially the capture tutorial (with a few exceptions). We've had different people teach us - the coffee man (kanto), a neighboring kid (gen2), friends (Lucas/Dawn, Bianca, Serena/Calem), and profs (Oak and Juniper)

In Hoenn's case, we are the ones tutoring Wally. It's pretty refreshing since the game recognizes our player character as experienced already.

So if we can't avoid tutorials anyways, would you prefer being teached or being the teacher?

It probably doesn't make a big difference, but hey, it feels rather nice being the teacher for a change.

Agreed. It feels like a recognition for the experienced fans. And gives your character some in- game self-confidence. It´s not like you are a newbie in pokemon...no. You are the son of a a Gym Leader, so it´s only logical you know the basics already.

an other extra point for Hoenn ;)

In any case of getting teached when you're a rookie, that's fine and normal. However, the problem for the veterans is usually depicted as an unnecessary act. Despite of this, GF still using this age old tactic to show what the trainers must do when you find a Pokemon that you've fancied over.

From my perspective, I agree why Gen 3 was a refreshing sense when Wally learns to obtain Pokemon instead of yourself and as a side fact, YOU are the son of a gym leader, Norman and YOU have just moved from Johto into Hoenn to experience the new region so Pokemon wasn't an unfamiliar faces among your memory.

So basically I'm saying yes to the "Teaching" act of getting your first catched Pokemon but also is not a big deal when you're having teached. It's not going to hurt you a lot from getting tutorials from friends/strangers/professors who simply just want to show you a classic method. Besides, it's not a waste timer which kills your fun over by doing it and also refreshes your mind when it comes to obtaining a Pokemon

The 1~2 minutes on tutorial is not a lot, I can always spare that time to waste, so it is really not such a big deal, even for me as a veteran player.

But, rather than the wasted time on the tutorial, I'm more concern about the mentality of GF treating every single player as newcomer, needed to be taught on how to play the game for every new title, even that is a remake of old games.

This game series is not like many other game series where gameplay system received a major renovation such that method of playing is different for every title. Even for Tales of series where the basic battle mechanism is still the combative A-RPG style through out the entire franchise, but in every title many changes are done such that battle system is overhaul for every time. You know the basic control if you had played just one of its game, but you need to relearn other battle details for every time. Yet, Tales of series doesn't include tutorial (nor battle help messages) for every single game, it only has tutorial or help messages if the new game system is too complex and differs significantly from any of its predecessors. Moreover, they are skippable if player feels tedious to watch.

The gameplay system of Pokemon series in fact didn't change much since GenI era. Now one would definitely wanted to argue with me about the splitting of Sp.Atk and Sp.Def, abilities and nature, EV/IV, weather conditions, double/triple/horde battles, new types and new evolution methods, formes and now Mega Evolutions, etc. But every new gen's battle system are merely toppings added onto the basis of previous game system, the controls are still remain exactly the same as GenI era. If you had played GenI, then even if you skipped all your way to current GenVI and never played anything in between, you won't find yourself difficult to adapt to the new game.

Besides, the tutorial we are getting for every gen -- The catching of wild Pokemon, this is something never ever changed since GenI era, why do we need to be taught every single time? I can understand the necessity of tutorial on Mega Evolution because that is a complete new mechanics never done before, I can also understand necessity of other battle tutorials on new mechanics such as utilization of weather and abilities (If there is any of these. IIRC, there never exist such tutorials...), I can also understand necessity of tutorials on other non-battling facilities such as Contest and Pokestar Studios. But just not catching of wild Pokemon because its method remains exactly the same since GenI era. This is no more a matter of being taught like newbie or teaching the newbie, this is more about the matter of GF treating players as complete newborn baby that doesn't know the basic control, and out of all the things needed to be taught, they chose the easiest general knowledge (even in terms of in-universe) that doesn't require tutorial again and again in the very first place.

Small thing, but it's bugging me. The word is 'taught'.

クリスタル has a good point, maybe a tutorial would be better served as an in-depth process for all the new mechanics, but a simple sentence or two for the usual basics would suffice - even for n00bs.

Just a curiosity out of the whim. Why GF never utilize things like help message or battle memo in the main series? It did tried a "Help" in FrLg, but it was not finely done IMO as contains too much useless info and redundant basic tips on how to play a RPG game, the wordings and paragraphs was also not nicely written for being a "Help" page, it feels like GF underestimate the intelligence of players thinking we are feeble-minded babies having complete zero experience in RPG games, probably even thinking we have zero experience in any sort of video game. Additionally it also wasted the L and R button. Even Pokemon Ranger games had glossary that explained all the things you need in the game, yet it didn't overdone with basic RPG playing tips, nor underdone such that only gameplay control but nothing else of in-universe was never explained. Why can't GF done something similar like that?
