Can anyone explain to me the reason for the Dragon Trio's battle types? Especially Palkia's; what does aqua have to do with space?

Pearls come from sea.

Diamond is a very hard material.

Distortion usually equals paranormaly.

Though those are my opinions.

OK, so what do pearls have to do with space, and diamonds with time?

Palkia is the mascot of Pokémon Pearl version and also has pearls on it's arm plates and it's name is based on pearl. Dialga is the mascot of Pokémon Diamond version, has a diamond on his chest plate and it's name is based on diamond.

Diamonds are forever, so I'm told.

I like this idea

maybe they chose pearls because oysters create the precious objects from mundane grit, possibly alluding to creating matter from nothing - control of space

edit: can't really think of anything connecting platinum to anything/giratina/distortion or whatever giratina does

Space is an ocean.

Platinum... There's how it goes backwards in name theming referencing gold and silver, drawing a parallel with the backwards nature of anti-matter... but I disgress. I have no idea why is it called that, Opal would have been more related to Giratina.
