It is my understanding that what we call "dark" types are called "evil" types in Japan. Do you think this represents their true natures, are their hearts black?

Far from it. Most dark Pokemon are just regular Pokemon with regular emotions.

"Evil" probably comes from their move sets (they tend to be the dangerous sort or the trickster/playing dirty sort), their abilities and their appearances.

I don't think Dark-type Pokemon are all evil. Pokemon have their own perosnalities. And in most of the games, Pokemon don't do bad things on their own. Trainers are the ones who tell Pokemon to do bad things.

Oh boy, this topic again.

Dark, or evil, is named such for the dark, evil, or devious methods such pokemon use, like Faint Attack, Sucker Punch, Thief, Snatch, Fling, even Dark Pulse, which is a dark aura of negative thoughts or something. The pokemon themselves aren't evil, it's just that their methods aren't very honest. I mean, Honchcrow is based off a mob boss. This also explains why fighting is super effective, because like with Batman, martial arts and training and discipline are far stronger than cheap techniques of decite.

Also, several dark types are nocturnal.

People give the types their name. They would have been called "evil" because that was the perception most people had, even though it may or may not be true.

No, they're not. Even in the games, it says that the trainers are the ones that make the Pokemon evil - not the Pokemon itself. They're just normal Pokemon. Dark types are the same as Normal types, Fire types, ect.

That's... what he said.
