Marvel Comics is gearing up for a big Ultimate Universe winter with the release of the Ultimate Marvel Free Sampler. Solicited in the December Marvel catalog, the special is a sneak peek for comic book readers and retailers of upcoming titles, including December's Ultimates 3 #1 and January's Ultimate Iron Man II #1 and Ultimate Human #1. But it's what these titles are leading up to (at least according to Diamond) that might be of new interest to Marvel followers.

The original catalog solicitation promises "the Ultimate Universe will never be the same", and since this summer readers have known about Jeph Loeb's mysterious upcoming Ultimatum crossover. While the writer hasn't revealed much in the way of specific information about that storyline, he has gone so far as to use the word "end" in relation to its effect on the Marvel Ultimate Universe.

"Expect the Unexpected. And the End is Near...Nearer...," he told us in July.

Diamond, however, got a little more specific Tuesday in their solicitation for the sampler on its retailer website.

"Boasting an all-new David Finch cover," reads the solicitation, "this special issue previews Ultimates 3 #1, Ultimate Iron Man II #1, Ultimate Human #1 and other upcoming books leading up to next year’s cataclysmic destruction of the Ultimate Universe!"

The sampler is scheduled to arrive in comic shops on November 21st.

Fun stuff. Wonder if this is all just some big tease, or if they actually have an end-point in mind. Then they can launch the second Ultimate universe, with twice the delays, and thrice the Bendis.

Well, they really don't need it anymore if they're going to magically make Peter Parker 15 years old again in 616. : p

Is that what they're doing with One More Day (haven't picked up a Spider-Man book (aside from the Civil War issue where May got shot, and the one with Lectronn) since...like...1998)?

Yeah. Aunt May got shot so Dr. Strange uses his magic mojo to reset Spider-Man's section of the universe back to high school. It's Quesada' way of undoing the marriage. *rolleyes* It's going to be so convoluted.

I knew they were resetting his history (because God forbid we actually allow Spider-Man to fucking change beyond his whiny-ass self. Just turn him back to Dusk and complete the emo-transformation), but I wasn't aware of the extent. Don't think I'll ever pick up another Spider-Man comic with Quesada at the head.

At least he's not as bad as Dan "The Flash needs to have his family killed. You can't have a real hero without a dead family member" Didio.

Eh. 6 of 1, really. DiDio believes a Flash has to die in every Crisis (and, apparently, we need a Crisis every year), whereas Quesada believes that Spider-Man should never go beyond the idea of the character he grew up with as a kid (despite being responsible for one of the biggest changes himself), yet has no problem screwing Speedball (because he "doesn't sell", despite not having a solo series since the early-90s, never mind Nova being on his FOURTH, the last two of which failed to last longer than a dozen issues), the New Warriors in general, most mutants (aside from the "popular" ones, and a few others), the Avengers and, for some reason, the Beyonder.

I'm a bit odd; I've said I've loved comics for about fifteen years now but I never read any until last year. Except for a few random issues it was mostly the cartoons, movies, and Wizard that connected me to the series.

So I'm a bit behind. And I wouldn't doubt the Ultimate Universe ending because I always seem to get into something when it's finishing. I only have Ultimate Spider-Man volume one and Ultimate X-Men volumes one through three.

As for the Flash, I only really know two Flashes. Wally because of the JL(U) cartoon and Bart because I read the current TT series. So I've known Wally since the cartoon came out but Bart only since last year. So of course the one I just start to know becomes one of my fave chars just in time for him to die.

Yeah, that's what got me started. Though Wizard's becoming a bit of a drag now, thanks to their constant staff shifts and the up-to-the-minute-ness of the internet.

I never was a fan of the Ultimate stuff. I read the first issue of X-Men, and just...didn't like it. I saw what they were trying to do, but it just...didn't work for me.

Same thing happened with me and Green Lantern. I get into it, Hal dies.

Great Wally info.
Barry's entry.
Jay Garrick, just for fun.

The only comic I'm into right now is Blue Beetle, because it's basically Green Lantern + Spider-Man + Venture Bros only without the angst. Which works really well for me, in my opinion.

I'm probably mostly alone in my love of the Ultimate Universe really, but this makes me a sad panda at even the thought of it.

:/

The world without a Sam. L. Jackson Nick Fury would be a very saddening one indeed...

Frankly, I just don't see why people hold the Ultimate universe in such high regard. Aside from Ultimates (parts, at any rate. Though, all told, it reminds me a hell of a lot of the Heroes Reborn Avengers), and the latest X-Men stuff, it's basically just the shorthand mainstream Marvel Universe (with the exception of Gah Lak Tus, which is an oddly drawn-out version of the mainstream).

The Blue Beetle series did look good, but I'm still mildly ticked off over the last Blue Beetle being killed (I happen to have been a fan of both him and Booster Gold).

I haven't read Wizard in a few years. I used to read them because my dad subscribed but I haven't lived with him in awhile.

The reason I read Ultimate is because it's difficult for me to find comics. Only book store around here is thirty minutes away and only has current comics.

I'd read the regular universe if I could find the comics from the beginning since I prefer not to start a series already in progress. Eh, maybe one day I'll steal my dad's comics, LOL.

And speedster links, yay! Thanks. :p

I can't blame you. Several comics I've been tempted to get into, but haven't because I want to start at the beginning (if not for random packs of comics, who knows how limited my interests would be. Though whether or not that's a good thing is another matter entirely).

Possible update to this story.

Next year, as part of the big upheaval in the Ultimate Universe, I'm told Jeph Loeb will write six issues of "Ultimate Fantastic Four" and six issues of "Ultimate X-Men." I'm told that's all the issues of each title that will ship in that period. But the belief is that each book will sell more than twice what it does now.

And "Ultimate Spider-Man" will keep on doing what it does best. Other books may not, however.

Maybe "death" of the universe was a bit extreme. Seems like it might just be going through a Crisis.

Seeing as how Ultimate Spidey is the only good series out of all of them, I wouldn't be particularly displeased to see it remain while the other titles are killed off.

So how many issues do Ultimate Spider-Man and X-Men currently have? I know I'm way behind but I'd like to see how much.

And I don't want a crisis, I'm confused enough already from the recent DC one. @.@

It's nice to be able to pick up a comic series (and even Universe), start from the very start and understand every single thing that's going on as well as enjoying the individual stories.

When it comes to main 616 Marvel, I have a basic understanding of it (enough to know the main events and roughly who was involved) but I pick up an issue and about half of it is referencing stuff I have no clue about because I either haven't been following it for months, recent years or even for the past 50 odd years.

I enjoy the writing and art of the Ultimate X-men, Spider-man and Ultimates (the ones I buy and read the most, though I have an Ultimate Fantastic 4 paperback and the complete Ultimate Crossover collection) and the storylines told in them - and it helps immensely in enjoying it that I've been there from the beginning in all of them, understand everything they mention and also understand the cross-referencing among it.

I never got into actually buying comics until the Ultimate Universe came along. I can get how it can seem a bit like the annoying kid cousin to people that have been buying the mainstream 616 comics since they can remember but I'm not one of those people. To me, the Ultimate Universe is my Marvel Universe. I understand it as fully as people that have been reading the main comics since they can remember do and love it the same way.

I may not be the "new to comics" archetype that the universe was built for in the face of the rebirth of the medium but I'm certainly 100% the right person to enjoy and love what they've done with it.

Ultimate Spider-Man will hit 116 this month. Ultimate X-Men hit 87 last month.

Ironically, the Crisis events are meant to REDUCE confusion. Well...the first one was. Now I think they just do it because they think it's fun.

Thanks for the info. I'm actually not as far behind as I thought, LOL.

It's confusing cause I only read TT and it mentions stuff from the crisis so I have no idea what some of the events they're referencing are.

Oak, you posted for yourself but you summed me up as well, LOL.
