So the new trailer introduced a new type of creature: Ultra Beasts. What are they exactly? A new branch of Legendary Pokemon (like Mythicals)? A new kind of Pokemon altogether? Are they even Pokemon? And what role will they play in Sun & Moon's plot?

What we know so far:

In the Alola region, rumors are flying about mysterious creatures known as Ultra Beasts. Ultra Beasts possess mighty powers and could pose a threat to humans and Pokémon, so they are feared.

It appears that the Aether Foundation is also conducting research on these Ultra Beasts.

According to rumor, multiple Ultra Beasts exist, each of them called by a code name.

UB-01

UB-01’s body is composed of a glass-like substance. However, it’s constantly changing shapes, never settling on one.

While evidence of something like a survival instinct can be observed in UB-01, no one knows whether it has a will of its own or any emotions. It’s said that, for some reason, its movements resemble those of a young girl.

They're the D-Reaper. :p

Neither Pokémon nor human, pose a threat to the region, could be linked to a young girl, use LETTER-NUMBER codenames, vaguely Lovecraftian appearance... it's great. This is something I was always really curious to see in the Pokémon world; I can't believe it's actually happening...

Under the speculation that UB-01 is Lillie, what if the other Ultra Beasts also disguise themselves as people or pokémon. And we'll meet other mysterious people and they'll clue us in on the Ultra Beasts and then towards the end of the game they'll be like SURPRISE we're the Ultra Beasts.

I'm thinking alien, also. Like, whatever planet they come from, they're that place's version of humans- the dominant species. And Deoxys are the slave race.

I don't know if they have a connecting with Deoxys, for all we know that they both are from very different places.

Yeah, I know. I wasn't being entirely serious, either, I just find the idea of Deoxys being some kind of weaklings where they're from to be hilarious.

Deoxys escaped the Ultra Beast homeworld, hitched onto a meteor, and sailed off to a place where Pokémon are treated as allies instead of slaves, I'll bet...

I don't know guys, this is really... Strange. We've seen in the past that other "aliens" have been classed as Pokémon (most notably Deoxys), but whatever these things are aren't? o_O That's curious, to say the least.

Willing to bet Lillie is UB-01 posing as a human and in her bag is a device that's keeping her human form alive with her true form locked away
Remember the chameleon arch and pocket watch in Doctor Who? Yeah, that.

While I can see aliens, and it probably is the more likey option, I also see artificial Pokemon, kind of like Mewtwo, but not clones. With their names it makes them feel sort of man-made. Also if you watch the Japansee trailer, there's a bit at the end with UB-01 and the head of the Aether Foundation, along with the protagonist and rival. The Aether Foundation might have made the Ultra Beasts

Interestingly, the Japanese site doesn't list this Mega Jellicent... nah not really... thing in the list of Pokemon.
It was put on the Story page, not the Pokemon page.

Still, I think it's artificial. Maybe an escaped specimen of Aether's research.

remember the weird things in gen V? the robots? maybe aliens? or maybe new pokemon? a new type? time will show.

That could be to keep us in suspense. Even if artificial, it would still count as a Pokemon. Mewtwo and the Porygon line are. And even the Golurk line are said to have been created.

Am I the only one that thought of The Thing? If it truly is related to Lillie somehow than what a revelation it would be if the real Lillie had been gone for a long time and the UB-01 took her place. :cautious:

Oooh, are they finally canonizing Missingno. as a lovecraftian eldritch abomination of sorts?
I really like this idea. Like they're canonized glitches and are a completely separate entity from normal pokemon.

Maybe it will use a refined, ridiculously shortened, ♀ cry?
