Under water episodes

In many of the older episodes they used this weird pinkish/redish thing to help them breath under water.
What were those things? I know they don't use them any more but I'm curious. Did it hold oxygen or did it filter oxygen from the water the person was in?

I dunno, but in the new ones they have some Jedi-like breathing apparatus to breath.

I heard once that they were actually based on some sort of Japanese device used for diving but beyond that, I've heard nothing. I think Yamato-san said that.

I believe they're called rebreathers, and they really do exist in real life. They carry only a small oxygen supply, though, so the anime exaggerates the length of their effectiveness a fair amount.

They had something like miniaqualungs or something in for Ranger 2

It's like a different version of those things you use in scuba diving if you ask me...
