As of current, Legends Z-A and its DLC has officially added a collective 44 new Mega Evolutions (putting us at 92 Megas total ). With that in mind, I wanted to start a discussion highlighting which new ones where unexpected for you, whether it be selection, execution, the lack of a mega for a mon, or whatever.

To name a few from me:

  • Starmie. Pretty obvious one, but yeah. I too was completely blindsided by it's design (and I love it)
  • Feraligatr was to be expected in regard to getting a mega being the starter, but it's execution bring a Totodile mimic was definitely unexpected for me.
  • Barbarcle was one of the more forgotten pokemon in general, so it getting a mega was not on my radar. In retrospect it definitely makes sense irt GF maybe wanting to make a more forgotten Pokemon more popular and I think that was a great call, but I'd be lying if i said it didn't catch me off guard at the time.
  • Gen 6 in general also had a pretty funky selection but Dragalge stands out. It's not really a Kalos mon that's been on my radar much in the first place, and the fact it got a mega when its counterpart Clawitzer didn't is funny to think about (though it's definitely not the first time version counterpart mon branched out to getting equal)
  • On that note, many of the pretty popular or heavily utilized Kalos mon in general not receiving megas (Talonflame, Noivern, Pangoro, Trevenant etc.). Not to say all the popular faces simultaneously could've realistically received a mega, but I was expecting at least one or two more out of this pool. Honestly though, looking at the Kalos set we got, they didn't go for a lot of the heavily utilized mon, aside from the starters and maybe Pyroar and Hawlucha, and I think that makes total reasonable sense irt to spreading out focus to lesser popular ones. But at the same time as Megas are the key gimmick of the region, you'd think they take the opportunity to shower more on the popular faces.
  • Golisopod's execution in general was unexpected to me with it's more robotic design and additional steel typing
  • Magearna getting a mega in general was already wild to think about, but it becoming essential a magical girl superhero was not on my radar.
  • The Gen 9 megas in general were surprising with how soon they got them and the selection going to ones that wouldn't be my first guess (honorable mention upfront to Scovillain), but Tatsugiri is definitely the poster child. They took what had its super specific niche as a tag team partner with Dondozo and gave it a mega on top of that. I honestly really like Mega Tatsugiri and its concept, but if you gave me 50 guesses on what Pokémon would get a mega in this game, Tatsugiri would not have been one.
