Unfortunate Name?

I don't see what the problem is. S&M is short for Sun and Moon so unless it is a reference to something then I see nothing wrong with it.

It's also a common abbreviation for sadism and masochism, as in the latter half of BDSM.

I hate to be crass, but this wasn't a problem with "Pokémon DP" so I doubt it will be much of a problem here.

Besides what kid even uses ampersands instead of just typing "pokemon sun and moon" (assuming they aren't just typing only one of the names, which they probably are, because I doubt that very many of the younger players buy both games - so they will likely only look for either "sun" or "moon").

This is honestly the dumbest thing ever. No one has ever abbreviated the games with an ampersand before so why start now? Pokemon RB would have also made a pretty good pun with R&B, yet I've seen no one even mention the naming coincidence there.

People are just looking for things to be awful about.

I hate to be crass, but this wasn't a problem with "Pokémon DP" so I doubt it will be much of a problem here.
And DP doesn't even need an ampersand to make it an "unfortunate name"

Doesn't make it any less unfortunate.
And its also nowhere near as big a problem as the fandom makes it so there's that.

Why the hell would little kids look up S&M?

Just typing Pokemon + Sun/Moon/SM seems way more likely to occur.

... Why would kids look up "Pokemon S&M"?

If anything, they'd look up Pokemon + Sun/Moon. Maybe SM, but I dunno. It should be noted that abbreviations can mean many things.
