Recently, we've had a number of user using unicode characters to alter their name and make it looks like they have been banned. We've also had a few incidents of posts written using very strange characters

After consultation, the staff has decided as follow:

-Any use of non-standard character to make your name looks like you have been banned, or that you are a staff member, is banned.
-No non-standard characters may be used in thread titles or blog post titles.
-Any other use of non-standard character in your name should be approved by a staff member, so we can make sure you are not accidentally confusing people or creating a coding mess.
-Generally, long-established -names with non-standard unicode characters will be tolerated, but you should still check with us.

-Added: Japanese characters are exempt from this rule

So people with special characters in their names need approved first?

Is having a Cyrillic 'а' at the end of my username tolerable?

Edit: No, I'm being confused for someone else... Even with my signature.

I'd imagine non-standard would be anything that doesn't fall under or closely resemble the Roman alphabet. Greek characters, being close relatives of Roman characters, may be acceptable. I'm assuming Japanese is allowed as well.

@Lance, confirmation?

Japanese I'm nto sure about, will discuss with the rest of the staff.

Greek characters, etc, have to be approved. We just want to make sure no one messes things up by having an excessively untypable name.

I imagine that Chinese characters are not that bad, because it's in the same league as Korean ones and Japanese ones (there are users using them currently), compared to some ludicrous instances, like strikethrough names, sideways usernames and characters that look like a mess that take up a whole column. Still, it's just my hunch.

Thanks for reading.

Something tells me my blank username was a factor in posting this thread. That means I can't go back to that anymore? I don't really give a shit about not being mentionable, by the way.

Are symbols such as hearts (like mine, I'm changing it anyway when I'm able) and arrows allowed because they are also non-standard characters.

pls

Whatever. Many lulz were had and that's all that matters. At least I have my usertitle.

A single unicode character, used in a reasonable manner, still needs to be approved - but will be approved. (Your name is now approved).

After discussion with the rest of the staff, we've decided to allow japanese characters.

Fair change/addition to the rules in my opinion. Over three unicode characters in a persons name always looked obnoxious to me- unless the name was in full Japanese or Chinese (those looked fine, they weren't a jumbled mess).

Due to an issue that appears to have been uncovered today, this ban is also extended to usernames comprised solely of numbers. That ban probably won't be permanent, I believe it's an error in the addon we use to give you quote notifications that's actually fixed in a newer version that we can upgrade to the next time we upgrade these forums.

@Archaic
I was apparently quoted on a thread I had never viewed let alone posted in so thanks for telling us.Also I was not actually quoted as it was someone else completely with a completely different username.

I tried to change my username back to the ones with no hearts (since my current username probably may be unacceptable) but It rejects it. Is there a way to go back to my previous name?
