HDR 2009: Trafficking can be most effectively combated through better opportunities and awareness at home—the ability to say ‘no’

Norway is officially the best place to live (i.e. the most developed), while Niger is the worst.

Hm, Myanmar is at a much higher place than I expected.

Given that only one country in the top 5 is actually in Continental Europe, probably not that good of an idea...:p

(Ireland, Iceland are islands off Europe. Australia and Canada, of course, are nowhere near Europe)

Well, I heard some criticism against this survey, because there's not much that separates the highest ranking countries from one another.
Oh well, can't complain here, top of the list.

Canada is so close. No need to move far. @3@ XD

Still being unlucky number 13 isn't all bad no? XP

Wow my home country is 105, I guess the US isn't that crazy after all. XP

I see Haiti has moved up quite a bit within the last few years. Anyone want to theorize why Niger is at the bottom? =O

My favourite UN Survey says that my country is the 6th most racist country in Europe and we have the 6th best Education system in TEH WORLD!

I still don't think I could live somewhere other than at the foot of the Rocky Mountains... Granted I do want to travel all over!

Don't constrain yourself! :D

^ Thank you for the advise, and I don't my wife and I spend most of our spare money to travel... Its what we want to do... but nothing beats the first time I get to see my Rockie Mountains after a trip!

It has no access to oceans and it's in Africa. There's nothing more that needs to be said.

Does oceans have anything to say? Switzerland is after all number nine...

Countries that are along rivers and oceans tend to have more trade opportunities than those that are completly land-locked. In the case of Niger, a lot of corruption I believe plays a role along with limited resources (aside from uranium and other mineral deposits.) It also doesn't help that most of the country is near-desert.

In Niger's case, the Sahara is probably one of the biggest factors, especially when 80% of Niger is covered by desert.

But that Switzerland is number nine and Austria number 14 means it not strictly necessary to have access to the sea, although the vast majorities of the top countries have that (and most countries in the world too).

Environment has a large role to play in a nation's development, though it's usually 2nd to human roles. Switzerland and Austria have a stable government, aren't swamped by any refugees from across the border (It can lead to problems....), and have enough regulation/laws to help prevent corruption and make government accountable to the people.

And also funbit: There's only two double-landlocked countries in the world. ;D

Many countries in Europe (especially the smaller, landlocked countries) focus their economies on business rather than industry.

That I'm aware of, but it tends to lead to problems when any country focus too much on one section of the economy (Like Iceland and it's banking disaster). Small countries are sometimes more vulnerable to outside pressures (Monanco or Macao and it's tourism), while others appear unaffected overall (San Marino in Italy).
