MOSCOW – If you're inclined to believe Igor Panarin, and the Kremlin wouldn't mind if you did, then President Barack Obama will order martial law this year, the U.S. will split into six rump-states before 2011, and Russia and China will become the backbones of a new world order.

Panarin might be easy to ignore but for the fact that he is a dean at the Foreign Ministry's school for future diplomats and a regular on Russia's state-guided TV channels. And his predictions fit into the anti-American story line of the Kremlin leadership.

"There is a high probability that the collapse of the United States will occur by 2010," Panarin told dozens of students, professors and diplomats Tuesday at the Diplomatic Academy — a lecture the ministry pointedly invited The Associated Press and other foreign media to attend.

The prediction from Panarin, a former spokesman for Russia's Federal Space Agency and reportedly an ex-KGB analyst, meshes with the negative view of the U.S. that has been flowing from the Kremlin in recent years, in particular from Vladimir Putin.

Putin, the former president who is now prime minister, has likened the United States to Nazi Germany's Third Reich and blames Washington for the global financial crisis that has pounded the Russian economy.

Panarin didn't give many specifics on what underlies his analysis, mostly citing newspapers, magazines and other open sources.

He also noted he had been predicting the demise of the world's wealthiest country for more than a decade now.

But he said the recent economic turmoil in the U.S. and other "social and cultural phenomena" led him to nail down a specific timeframe for "The End" — when the United States will break up into six autonomous regions and Alaska will revert to Russian control.

Panarin argued that Americans are in moral decline, saying their great psychological stress is evident from school shootings, the size of the prison population and the number of gay men.

Turning to economic woes, he cited the slide in major stock indexes, the decline in U.S. gross domestic product and Washington's bailout of banking giant Citigroup as evidence that American dominance of global markets has collapsed.

"I was there recently and things are far from good," he said. "What's happened is the collapse of the American dream."

Panarin insisted he didn't wish for a U.S. collapse, but he predicted Russia and China would emerge from the economic turmoil stronger and said the two nations should work together, even to create a new currency to replace the U.S. dollar.

Asked for comment on how the Foreign Ministry views Panarin's theories, a spokesman said all questions had to be submitted in writing and no answers were likely before Wednesday.

It wasn't clear how persuasive the 20-minute lecture was. One instructor asked Panarin whether his predictions more accurately describe Russia, which is undergoing its worst economic crisis in a decade as well as a demographic collapse that has led some scholars to predict the country's demise.

Panarin dismissed that idea: "The collapse of Russia will not occur."

But Alexei Malashenko, a scholar-in-residence at the Carnegie Moscow Center who did not attend the lecture, sided with the skeptical instructor, saying Russia is the country that is on the verge of disintegration.

"I can't imagine at all how the United States could ever fall apart," Malashenko told the AP

Seems pretty ridiculous...

Yes, the gay people are responsible for this economic crisis.

Well, everything must come to an end someday. After all, don't some people say that Obama has some socialist ideas, or something. I don't really pay much attention to politics, except voting for, and supporting Sheriff Arpaio. However I doubt that Russia and China would become the backbones of a new world, or something. It would most likely be Europe, I think.

Canada has a lot of socialist ideas too, far more than the US anyways; yet we're in fairly good shape so far in this recession, all things considering. Socialist ideas don't bring ruin to the world.

Dude, that's so bogus. Everyone knows the world will end in 2012. Personally, I'm betting on a Palin-Jindal ticket being the cause.

Haha!
Snake, you beat me to it.

The other night I got way into watching this two hour 2012 special...
<.<; Seriously disturbing. And whats even worse? We're all dying on my 21st birthday!

All I know is, when december 21st rolls along, I'll be closed up in a basement cellar, with tons of booze.

BS propagandist article. The US will not collapse in 2011 and the world will not end in 2012.

Exactly. This sort of end-of-the-world/society nonsense is almost becoming an annual tradition. I'll believe it when I see it.

Well, for the record, I was kidding. Thinking the world will end in 2012 is ridiculous. So what if the Mayans thought it will. XP

Although, a Palin-Jindal ticket IS a worrying thought.

The world ending on 2012 is based alchemy and astrology being real sciences. It's not even considering what the Mayans were thinking. (It's just where their cycle restarts which they attached importance to but that world ending.)

This is based on crap. Even during the depths of the Depression, Roosevelt never declared martial law. Why would Obama?

EDIT: Palin/Jindal is a scary thought. Neither can speak and both are crazy.

Oh, I knew you were kidding. I was just commenting on how these scaremongering stories are suspiciously common.

Of course they're common. xD;
I'm sure once December 21st comes and goes, the next eight years after, there'll be something else to stir up the general population.
Even though theres loads of 'scientific explanations' for as to WHY people think the world is either going to end/ and or change in 2012, I'll believe it when I see it. Still, its pretty interesting.

Its still not going to sway me from buying tons of booze, and locking myself in a basement, though. xD;

Just in case, you know? Haha.

That's good to know. If it's alchemy and astrology, the only alchemist whose predictions I'll believe is Albus Dumbledore.:)As for astrology, I'll never believe the Divination teacher, I forget how to spell her name. Now I don't have to hurry moving to Spain.

No one's immune to getting paranoid and panicking, I guess.

I've gotten so many people annoyed at me because I start laughing when they pull the "oh noez teh wurld iz gonna ennnnnd!!!!" crap. They don't like it when I use logic to poke holes in their hysteria.

I was actually worried about Y2K, I admit- because I worried what the idiots who bought into the doomsday scenarios would pull.

This sounds like so much wishful thinking and propaganda. The guy who said this is a Putin fanboy, too.

Also the bit about Russia and China emerging victorious was lulzy. And Alaska being reclaimed to Russia (though if that does happen, at least Palin might get thrown in the gulag... hm).

I wish Russia would get over its Cold War butthurt and just realize they're kinda a laughingstock of the rest of the world with the way they run that country and give up.

this is tough talk when you're talking to the only country that hasn't disassembled its nuclear armanent. you'll find me in the fallout bunker...

Hmm. Ive read this before...somewhere....
moving on, everything has an expiration date. Although I dont expect this to happen.

did you know that in the past 2 millenia, not one country has maintained the distinction of being the most powerful empire in the world? our time is coming; we just have to wait...

...okay, maybe it's not happening anytime soon...
