User groups?

There are Social Groups where you can join and talk to others about the certian subject, like Pikachu or something. These are different then permission groups.
If you click Social Groups in the menu then you can make a group, also in the menu.

To join, just click "Join" on the usergroups page. It'd likely be best to send one of the group leaders (displayed under the group name) a private message or visitor message, because if I am correct they don't receive a notification for a join request. 'Course, you'd likely still be let in, it would just be faster if you messaged them.
To my knowledge there isn't quite the "advantage" to joining one - it just shows some text above your Recent Visitors showing what permission groups you're in. And, I'm not personally positive about making a permission group. That you'd have to ask an admin about most likely, because I'm not sure if new ones are accepted (the list hasn't changed much at all since I joined, back in 2010, so I don't think they are).
