Using Frisk In The DS Games

I have been trying to figure something out with the moves Frisk and Snatch and its just not happening. I am wondering how to do this if its even possible.

My Banette in..ah, heck one of the Pokemon games for DS - there are only like 3000 of them now...does that thing where he frisks his opponent in wild Pokemon encounters. He finds items like oh I dunno, grip claws usually. I figure that when a Pokemon is in the wild, there must be a way for us to keep that item?? But I haven't had any luck.
Using Banette again as an example: he's got frisk and snatch. Doesn't really seem to do anything except say "waits for target to make a move" and then... usually nothing really seems to happen.

Snatch doesn't steal a held item, it steals the effect of an opponent's status move. If you want to steal the opponent's held item, use the move Thief or give a Pokemon a held item you don't need like an Iron Ball or Lagging Tail and use Trick or Switcheroo in a wild battle.
