How come we cannot utilize previous nicknames/usernames? Rather sad really...

What are the considerations regarding an embed function for youtube? last time I asked copyright issues were noted as a hindrance, but youtube is liable for their content and sites embedding are not.

Cheers

It is possible to change our names back to the original one, but only when we've already changed our name five times after we changed it from the original one.

I think the reason vBulliten doesn't allow you to switch right back to your old name is to discourage constant flip-flopping with names. With the current limit of five, you have to change your name four more times if you want your original name back (or just ask an admin).

I personally don't like embeding. It takes too long to load and maybe I don't want to watch that video. What's so difficult about linking to the video?

Cheers for the answer to the first one. Honestly thanks for clarifying it's much appreciated :D

You could have embedding only activated on one sub-forum or similar. Linking means clicking, opening a new tab and so on. It's not a huge thing, but it just streamlines the experience and makes it better. Thus the flow isn't interrupted. Obviously it's not absolutely required, but I think it improves the site considerably.

a. If you are not able to change your username back to a previous one, ask an Admin and we'll be more than happy to help you out, as long as the name you want is not being used by another user now.

b. We have done some testing with the new vB, and it does allow for embedding youtube videos, and does so very nicely. I'm not sure if we're going to utilize this or not though, because while some people will be using this for purely legit purposes, there are also a lot of people who might think that this is a way of saying that it's okay to post to copyrighted videos that have been uploaded without permission of the license holders (i.e. episodes of Pokemon on youtube).

Hopefully we will keep the youtube linking though when we upgrade, because it IS a nice feature, but hopefully you will understand where there might be problems with such a feature.

Actually, as far as I know, it's not a limitation in vBulletin. I think it's fully customizable and the admin can specify how many days that username can't be used again. I'm not sure about five username changes thing, but I do know for a fact that you can specify the amount of days that name can't be used after it's changed. But of course as "Jessie" said, you can just PM an admin and they'll change it back for you. I don't change my name often and I know I changed it to Astronema and had Misty change it back after a while but then after so many months, I was able to take Astronema back but I didn't have to change my name four more times before it happened. So maybe both of those are factors.

So the name switch is broken then because I have not been on for ages, but I still cannot revert to a previous username. Thus I think the five switch requirement is in place at the moment.

The copyright argument is baseless and for that reason entirely untenable. Youtube is liable for all copyright and is tasked with policing their own website. They were even taken to court over this by Viacom, so that cannot be the actual reason this has not been implemented. If there are restrictions server side or something then I am fine with that. But it cannot be pending due to the legal technicalities...

I can change it in the admin control panel right now for you if you wish.

Honestly, you do make a good point. We currently don't allow linking to episodes even as links though because the majority of staff felt that it was better to be safe than sorry in a case such as this (I believe that busts such as the TV-Links one went into consideration when we made this rule). While I don't know if there will be any new considerations toward things such as youtube linking in lieu of this year's court victory that TV-Links had, I am merely echoing the current staff position.

I will probably be in touch in the next few days, but cheers for the quick response! Out of curiousity (don't feel you have to answer this) what was your previous username?

Jessie is just my name of the day's festivities. You know me as Satoshi-kun. While we've had some issues/differences/etc in the past, I would rather do my best to help and not let the past cause any problems in the present. I hope you wish to do the same.

Yeah that is absolutely fine with me. Actually I would like to take a moment to clarify that I am in no way, shape or form attacking you or any of the staff at bmgf with the previous comment and I genuinely hope it is not interpreted or understood in such a manner! Quite the contrary I merely wanted to point out that copyright considerations should not be a hindrance to the embed feature. Nonetheless I can see why a website with this kind of traffic would want to proceed with care when making fundamental changes to the forums that could in theory result in legal ramifications (though in this case it is not applicable). Fundamentally I feel that a misunderstanding in regards to the legal jargon should not hamper the development of such a high profile fansite. Anyways thank you for the insightful and speedy responses :)

I understand, and I do share these views as well. We'll just have to see how the future plays out for us when we do upgrade, and I also hope that this will not hamper our implementation of the embedded video feature, because it was really fun to experiment with when the staff was running a test of the vB4 forum software! Let's hope that the future brings us all a lot of fun!

As far as youtube goes, we cannot link at all?
Even if I'm doing a diary blog for my progress on SS?

Oh no, you just can't link to copyrighted episodes and such. Gameplay vids are not off limits. :)

I was reasonably sure this was the case because none of the others on the block list look eligible for moderating. Thanks for clarifying!

This comes across as both disingenuous and presumptuous, so originally I was not going to dignify it with an answer. Nonetheless allow me to remind you that the sole reason those hostilities occurred were because you acted like an absolute idiot and I called you out on it multiple times. I remember burning you pretty hard in this thread. Thus I sincerely hope you read it to remind yourself of your old ways and to read a spectacular set of ripostes that shredded your futile arguments :)
If you act in such an unruly, juvenile and immature way towards me, then yes I may take you on again. Although I do doubt it considering I ascribe nearly no worth to these boards anymore or the people posting here (apart from Outrage, UL and a few other sane ones). Basically I don't care that much about these boards or about the community, so I would hardly let it get in the way of anything. To claim that past differences could be an issue seems bizarre/quixotic because I have been on a hiatus for quite some time now and clearly I no longer care or consider past animosity.
Keep in mind it was the initial outrageous behaviour on your part that led to the clash and not the other way round.

So Satoshi-kun offers to make a fresh start, and you write a long post which basically amounts to "screw you". Good going Ling Ling, that's really going to endear you to people in your second tenure. Why are you so keen to keep old enemies when you are being offered new friendship?

Not at all what I said, but thanks for straw manning? Clearly you haven't read the post, so I am unsure what to say at this point because it won't be comprehended and in the worst case straw manned...

EDIT: Why are you even weighing in? Nobody asked you too, can't Kun speak for himself? Wow...
