Welcome. I'm Duckie.
Thank you for taking the time to read my fan fic!
It's my first one, and I'm both nervous and excited to start one. Hopefully I'll do a good job, and I'll give you an interesting story to read. Now, I have rated it PG-13, for possibility of strong language.
Please rate, comment, and give constructive criticism. I always encourage it. :]

PS, I've brought this over from a different website. It's not complete, in fact, I'm only just writing Chapter 4. Anyway...

Chapter 1: Angst

And so, it begins.

‘Tomorrow is the day, finally the day. I capture my first pokemon. My god. I’m so nervous, so excited, and so anxious.’

Rain laid in his bed, in his neatly organized room, lights off, shutting his eyes and attempting to sleep. Try as he might, he could not sleep. His mind was racing.

‘I’ve finally graduated from the academy; I finally have my trainer license, and I can now start my own journey.’

Rain is 16 years old, a little older than the common age most kids decide to start their adventure. Most kids graduate during their preteens, but certain decide to continue studying for a few more years.

‘All the hard work I’ve put into this, all the studying, the stress, and the day dreaming.’

Tomorrow is the annual “Final Test.”
All graduating pokemon academy students are lent one pokemon, and are released into a five square mile park behind the pokemon academy. All students are given 24 hours to go in, capture a pokemon, and leave the park, and return the pokemon they were lent. Their prize, graduation gift, and starter pokemon, is the one they captured during the time they spent in the park.

‘Damn, what will I even wear?’

Rain tried to imagine himself, searching for his perfect starter pokemon. He saw himself; his messy, dark hair, his gleaming green eyes, shining like two emeralds, wearing his favorite black shirt and dark teal jeans, running through the forest sporting old, dirty slip-ons, in search of his new pokemon partner.

‘I’m scared. I’ll sure miss everyone,’ he thought, as his eyes began to well up. ‘Mom and dad, mom’s Swablu and Chikorita, and dad’s Miltank and Chatot, my teachers, and Benji.

Benji Was Rain’s good friend. He was the first friend Rain made when he moved to the small, quiet, Pallet town, 6 years ago. Rain was and still is a shy, nervous boy, and Benji was nice enough to reach out to him and help him out, Rain being the new kid and all. Benji is 17, a year older than Rain, and had already had his own adventures in the world of pokemon. Though Rain was eligible to leave home at the same time that Benji did, Rain decided to continue his studies, and learn about the pokemon world through his books. Benji, on the other hand, felt he was ready to start his adventure and would learn more about the world by exploring it. As luck and skill would have it, Benji reached the Indigo Plateau and ranked #11 out of the 100 trainers that were eligible to compete in that year.

‘Damn it, I’m so nervous.’ Rain began to sob.

“Heh, no wonder they call me Rain.”

He rolled in his bed, trying to find a comfortable spot.

“Stupid metal spring beds. If I could only have one of those memory foam mattresses, Rain complained. And this pillow, always collecting so much heat.”

As he turned his pillow, Rain’s mother knocked on his wooden door.

“Rain? Are you still awake?”

“Uh, yeah, mom. I am.”

She walked in.

“Hun, I heard you talking to yourself in the other room. Are you feeling alright?”

“Uh, yes mom,” he replied, trying to wipe away any tears left in his eyes.”

“Hey, don’t cry. It’s alright. Don’t worry so much about tomorrow, you’ll do fine. I know you will.” She sat at next to him.

“I know mom, I’m alright.”

“Would you like some water? Or some lemonade? Chikorita plucked some fresh lemons from the garden, yesterday.”

“Oh, just some water, please. Sugary lemonade would probably keep me up all night.”

“Right. We wouldn’t want you tired on the day of your final.” She said, smiling and leaving the room.

Rain turned and plopped his head on his pillow. His eyes began to well up again, and not wanting to worry his mother, he pretended to be asleep when she walked back in with his water. Noticing that he was “asleep” she put the water on the table next to his bed, sat down next to him, and did what mothers do. Tucked him in, and kissed him on the cheek.

“Good night, honey.”

She left the room and slowly shut the door.

‘Oh, mom. Thank you.’

Oh, crap! Almost six pages long! Aha, oh, wow.
Anyway, read and rate, comment and be a helpful critic! :]

Chapter 2: Spectacular Water

A rude awakening.

Rain did not fall asleep till 2:00am.

Though his mom calmed his nerves, he became overly excited, thinking about what pokemon to search for and possibly capture.

Eventually, he did slowly slumber away, and dreamed about himself walking through a forest, around bushes and stepping over large roots. The trees were dry and dead, riddled with holes but large and ominous and rising to the sky with branches like arms. The soil was dark, and he finds a rustling in a nearby bush, and approaches it with caution. The rustling becomes more violent with each step, and his heart beats faster, and suddenly, the bush catches fire. He stands, stricken with fear, as the flare surrounds the foliage around him.

A dark, faceless figure rises from behind the shrub.

“Hahaha! Kid, you might as well give up your dreams. You’ll never reach Benji’s level.” Said the dark figure. His voice was dark, and deep.

“Ah? No, no! Please! Help me! Help me, please!”

“Hahaha! Shut up!”

He withdrew into the shadows of the trees.

Rain could not move, and even if he wanted to, there was no opening.

“Uh…hh..ahh.uh…”

The fire drew closer…

*RINGCLANGCLANGRING*

“Wha?!”

His alarm startled him up… Rather, startled him out… Out of his bed, onto the floor, knocking the water off the table, which landed all over his face.

“Damn it!”

Rain’s parents, Chatot, and Swablu, rushed into his room.

“Em. Son? What happened?” Rain’s father asked.

“Ahaha, so much for a warm shower.” His mother said, with a chuckle.

“So much for a warm shower, So much for a warm shower!” Mocked Chatot.

“Oh, shut up Chatot.” Grumbled Rain.

Rain pulled himself up, still dazed from his sudden awakening, and picked up his alarm clock. It was almost 6:00am.

“What!? 6:00am! My final is in an hour!”

His family parted from his bedroom door, still giggling, as he ran to the large bathroom, down the hall. He took a look at himself in the mirror. His hair had absolutely no form from rolling around all night and he had bags under his eyes from lack of sleep. He closed and locked the door, undressed and took the warm shower he’d originally wanted…

As he lathered up, he recalled the events in his dream. This was not the first time he had had that same one; in fact, he’s had it over and over again for the last 2 months. Rain had mentioned it to his parents, and they all figured he was only nervous about school and his inhibitions.

Rain finished up his shower, dried up while brushing his teeth and applying whatever he could to make himself look and feel good for his final. He walked to his room in his blue robe and pulled out the exact clothing he imaged himself wearing last night; his favorite black t-shirt, dark teal pants, and his old, dirty slip-on shoes. He also wore a red band on each wrist; he’d feel naked without them. He got dressed quickly.

By now, it was 6:30am. Just enough time to eat breakfast with his family, and have a pleasant walk to the academy.

Rain walk out of the room, and into the hallway. His nose was filled with the aroma of cooking eggs, biscuits, and melting cheese. He walked downstairs to see his family, all in the dining room, seeming waiting for him.

“Mornin’ Rain, Mornin’ Rain! Breakfast is ready!” Chatot cheerfully called.

“Chiko-Chika! Chika chika!” Chikorita seemed happy as well.

Swablu and Miltank hummed in unison, Swablu in his beautiful soprano voice, and Miltank in her own, deep moos. Rain’s parents smiled at their son, passing him his egg and cheese sandwich, and his bowl of fresh oran berries, compliments of Chikorita herself, and a glass of Moo Moo Milk, from none other than Miltank. Rain was suddenly feeling much better, and happy enough to cry, though, he didn’t.

“Thank you all so much.”

And everyone happily, but hurriedly ate. As soon as everyone finished their meals, Rain’s parents waited at the door while he went upstairs to grab his trainer license. It had a picture of himself, with a dull face, his birth date and name of the school, Pallet Pokemon Academy, and a bar code.

“Are the pokemon coming too?” Rain asked, heading for the door.

“No, they are staying to watch the house. We’ll all be here as soon as you come home to see your new pokemon, and see you off on your journey.” Replied Rain’s father.

“Right.”

The group of three walked out of their yard, and down the road. The Pokemon Academy was not far away, in fact, it was a short, five-minute walk. The air was cold, but in a relaxing manner. The still-rising sun placed an orange cast to the eastern sky, and the plants and trees danced calmly with the rise and fall of the wind. The academy could be seen at the end of the road, in front of the very large park, Pallet Park, where Rain and hundreds of other young graduates would be capturing their first pokemon.

As they got closer and closer to the school, Rain could see more and more people flocking in front of the gate to Pallet Park behind the school.

Rain and his parents picked up their pace and arrived shortly. The building was large, red, and surrounded by lots of green, lush vegetation. The principal was on a podium with a microphone.

“Welcome all Pallet Pokemon Academy graduates! If you’re just arriving, please sign in with your teachers, gather your gear, and wait in front of the gate. Thank you!”

Rain scanned the school’s yard and spotted his teacher and several of his classmates in front of a large table. On the tables were different colored backpacks.

“Hello Ms. Fujibayashi.” Called Rain.

“Ah, Good morning Rain! I’ll just check your name off the list… There we go… And here is your new backpack. Inside is a sleeping bag, 6 pokeballs, a map of Pallet Park, and a pokedex."

Ms. Fujibayashi handed Rain a teal backpack.

“And here is the pokemon we will lend you. Go on, call him out the way we taught you.” Ms. Fujibayashi took a random pokeball from a box.

Rain took the small, white and red-lined pokeball. It was a premier ball, probably to avoid mixing the pokemon he was lent, and the one he will capture. He pressed the button on the middle of it, it became the size of his palm…

“Uh… Right… Pokemon, I call on you!”
Rain tossed the ball into the air; the ball opened, and a white, radiant light bore a small, cute, brown bear. A Teddiursa. It held a note, and handed it to Rain.

The group stared at the small bear in awe. Rain took the note, and read it. It had a list of the attacks and techniques it knew.

Teddiursa:
Faint Attack
Sweet Scent
Fake Tears
Cut

“Okay Teddiursa, return.” Rain shot the red beam from the pokeball and the Pokemon disappeared into the ball.

“Rain, It’s almost time to gather at the gate; we are waiting for Professor Gary Oak, and his son. Part from your parents, and good luck. I'll sure miss you too. You were one of my best students. Try not to be so nervous, okay? Good.” Ms. Fujibayashi said. She embraced him with a good bye hug.

“Right. Thank you for being such a great teacher.”

Rain headed back with his parents, who were in a conversation of their own.

“Honey, Erik, doesn’t this place remind you of the Safari Zone in Fuchsia City?” Rain’s mother asked.

“Why, yes it does. The place where we had our first date! Remember how badly that started out?” Replied Rain’s father.

"Oh, yes. You told me to meet you inside the park!"

"Oh, no Sara! Don’t start with that again! I told you twice to meet me outside, in the zoo!"

“AHEM.” Rain loudly cleared his voice to get the attention of his parents.

“I’ve got to go. It’s almost time for the Final to start.”

Rain’s father took a step towards his son and put his hand on his shoulder.

“Oh, all right. We’ll see you at home.”

“Bye Hun.” Cooed his mom, as she gave him a hug and kiss.

Rain smiled, turned around, and headed toward the gate. Just as he passed his teacher, he notices a limousine pull up, and hears a loud horn, in the tune of “La Cucaracha, a silly, Spanish folk song.”

It was the Professor Gary Oak, his three assistants, and his son. The crowd of students cheered as they all crawled out. Oak’s son, Avery said a few words to his father, and promptly walked toward his teacher to gather his gear.

Rain never really liked Avery. Avery had always been so rude and so mean to him. He had such an arrogant personality.

Oak stood at the podium, and took hold of the microphone.

“It’s a great pleasure to be here today, in front of this aspiring group of youngsters! I’m happy that we should host such a great group of graduates, and future pokemon superstars!”

The group of students cheered. Some jumped and screamed crazily, as though they were at a rock concert. Rain grew closer to the gate, and saw his three of his good friends. Iris, Lloyd, and Blithe.

“Hey, Rain! Come here!” Iris called. “Stick with the three of us, yes?”

“Uh…” Rain still felt shy around his friends, even after being friends for years.”

“Come on, at least for a while. And then we can go our separate ways.”

“Oh, alright.” Rain replied happily.

“So, any idea of what pokemon you’ll try to capture?” asked Lloyd.

“Ah… No, not really, I just-“

“Hold up! Gary Oak is speaking!” interrupted Blithe.

Oak stood up straight, put on a serious face, and began to speak.

“I bid good luck to all the Pallet Pokemon Academy graduates!” Oak pulls out a pokeball, enlarges it, and tosses it into the air.

“Let’s go, Blastoise!”

A large, plump turtle emerges from the pokeball.

“As soon as my Blastoise shoots his hydro pump, you may enter the park.”

Rain looked at the large group of fellow students. They all had their eyes fixated on Professor Gary Oak and his Blastoise.

“And now, you may begin!”

Gary Oak looked sharply at his Blastoise, who then shot a spectacular pump of water into the air.

Rain stood, staring in awe at the body of water in the air. Students pushed and shoved him around to get past him.

“Rain! Grab my hand!” Iris called.

Rain grabbed her hand, who grabbed Lloyd’s hand, who grabbed Blithe’s hand. The group then ran into the park, together.

I love this! It's very good! *excited that Gary makes an appearance* Really, I was surprised to read something this good after you said it was your first fic.

Keep up the good work. :D

Ah! Yay!
You guys don't know how happy you've made me. :]!
;o! You actually recognized the cameos I made? ;D!

Okay, I finished this chapter last night.
I'll be starting the next chapter like, right now.

Chapter 3: Reckless Behavior

There are better ways to handle these things, y'know.

The group of four, tightly holding hands, ran into Pallet Park for their Final. They each had the task of finding and capturing a pokemon partner to accompany them on their first pokemon journey.

As soon as the stampede of academy graduates spread out and ended, the group of four, Rain, Iris, Lloyd, and Blithe, finally calmed down and began to walk. They stared in fascination at the environment around them. In front of them, was a dirt path, leading into a large forest with an assortment of many different trees, some with spines, others with large leaves, and some with flowers and some with ripe berries.

Most students, rather than taking the dirt path, ran directly into the mass of trees and plants. Loud shrills and cries could be heard from startled pokemon, probably being chased by overjoyed youngsters.

To the left and right of them, were some grassy fields and rolling hills with flowering plants. A few kids could be seen wandering around in them.

“Into the forest?” asked Lloyd.

“Eh, why not? There isn’t much around here anyway,” replied Iris.

The group walked into the forest.

“So, Rain, you were going to say what kind of pokemon you were searching for?” asked Blithe.

“Oh, right. Well. I’m not sure, actually. I spent all night wondering about it, and now I don’t even know what I want… Em. What about you guys?”

“Ah, I don’t really know either. I was thinking of maybe a fire type. Or grass type,” said Iris.

“Some kind of grass type for me. Or maybe a ground type! Like a Trapinch,” said Lloyd.

“I want a Pikachu. I’ve always wanted one,” said Blithe.

“As if we didn’t already know,” said Iris, with a chuckle.

Rain began to lag a bit behind the group. He looked at the trees in amazement; at how tall and great they looked. He scanned the trees for pokemon, but when he didn’t see any, he figured they had been scared away by all the people walking though.

He then looked at his friends.

Iris had her hair loose and wavy, like always. It is a light brown color. She is also a bit taller and a year older than him. She has dark eyes, and a beautiful, perfect smile. She always wore either red or black, and in fact, she wore both colors today; a scarlet shirt and faded black/gray jeans. Iris has a basically nice and friendly personality. She can be very outspoken when needed, especially when sticking up for another person. She defends her views and refuses to be put down. She’s a wise and intelligent person, and Rain always found himself going to her for advice, especially when Benji wasn’t around. Though, her sarcasm can get the best of her, and those around her.

Lloyd has black hair. It is short, and always in a simple faux hawk style, or just basically gelled in the front, with the tips up. He has a light tan complexion, with soft facial features, and blue-gray eyes. He’s attractive and popular with girls, though; he’s never had a girlfriend… Lloyd often wears earthy colors. He wore a mossy green t-shirt, and torn blue denim jeans. As for his personality, well. It was basically opposite of Rain’s. He’s an emotional person, but in a happy sense. While Rain has few friends, Lloyd has connections with most of the school, which means he’s very outgoing. Though, sometimes he can be a bit narcissistic. But that doesn’t mean he’d leave Rain behind in the dust.

Blithe’s love for electric pokemon reflected her appearance and personality. She had a golden waterfall of hair, which frayed at the ends, a pale complexion with sapphire eyes, and sharp, but attractive facial features. She’s a very active girl, optimistic, and very outgoing as well, though; she can be a bit passive aggressive and unwillingly rude and even a bit reckless. But in all, she is a good girl and a faithful friend.

He then, stopped walking. He stared into a clear puddle of water that reflected the light sky. He saw his emerald eyes, welled up, and thought of Benji. He fell into a trance…

Benji took Rain’s hand without waiting for him to reach. He could tell that Rain was a troubled, depressed child, and really, just need a friend. And he was right, and took Rain in when no other person would. Benji is taller than Rain, and is also a year older. His hair is dark and shaggy, somewhat long. His eyes were two light brown rays, and he had a unique, but angelic smile.

“Hey… Where’s Rain?” asked Lloyd.

”Ah, you’re right. He’s gone,” replied Blithe.

“I’ll go get him,” said Iris.

Iris ran back a few steps, and found Rain staring at a small puddle.

“Ah? Rain? Are you alright?”

Rain came back to reality. He turned around and faced the sky, to hide his face and his eyes.

“Oh, yeah. Eh, sorry Iris.”

“Rain, Is something bothering you?”

“Eh, no. It’s nothing.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, don’t worry. I’m just starting to realize that I won’t be returning home for a while, after I leave.”

“Oh, I see. But Rain, you shouldn’t let that get to you. You’ll come back, and you’ll have many stories to tell everyone. You should be happy… Benji would want that.”

“Yes. Alright… Thanks Iris.”

“It’s not a problem,” she said, grabbing his arm and pulling him in for a hug.

“Let’s go, Rain, Blithe and Lloyd are probably tired of waiting for us.”

“Alright.”

The two headed back up the path, and saw their two friends, who had puzzled looks on their faces, but not at Rain and Iris, but at something else.

“Eh, guys? What’s going on?” Iris asked.

“Oh, I don’t know. Those kids up the path seem to be having some trouble,” replied Blithe.

The group walked ahead, and found three young trainers kicking a tree.

“Ah… Is something wrong?” asked Lloyd.

The tallest of the three trainers turned around.

“Yeah. We heard some rustling up the tree, and we are trying to figure out what it is. Could you help us shake the tree?”

Blithe and Lloyd glanced at each other, nodded, and simultaneously rammed the tree with their bodies. But with the pain pulsating in their sides, they collapsed to the ground. Rain and Iris stood in shock, while the younger trainers exploded with laughter.

“You guys are dumbasses. Of course that wasn’t going to work,” exclaimed Iris.

“Shut the hell up,” said Lloyd.

Rain didn’t say a word. But suddenly, it seemed that his friends’ effort didn’t go to waste. A mass of insect pokemon tumbled onto the ground. A Caterpie, a green caterpillar with pink antenae, a Wurmple, a red wormlike pokemon sporting poisonous barbs on its body, and a Weedle, a brown, hairy larvae with a large stinger at the top of it's head and a red nose. They all stood up quickly and didn’t look happy.

“Well then, I guess I was wrong,” said Iris, backing away from the angry pokemon.

“Alright! One for each of us!” yelled one of the young trainers.

But instead of attacking the trainers, the bug pokemon began a barge of poison sting and sting shot attacks aimed at Rain and his friends.

Lloyd stood up, dodging the poisonous barbs shooting at him.

“I think we should run!” yelled Lloyd.

“Right!” replied Iris.

He then pulled out his luxury pokeball, threw it into the air, and a flash of light revealed his borrowed pokemon; a small, floating, golden bell that calmly levitated in the air.

“Chingling! Protect us with a light screen!”

The golden bell pokemon then created a wondrous wall of light that nullified the angry insects’ attacks by simply absorbing them in mid-air. This then intimidated the insects, and allowed the younger trainers a chance to battle them.

Without a word, Rain rushed over to Blithe, pulled her up, and lead her back to the dirt path, which ran down a hill.

“Hurry up you two!” exclaimed Lloyd, tugging them by the arms and running down the hill, away from the excited trainers and toward Iris.

“Chingling, return!” The small pokemon then disappeared into the pokeball. He was the last to reach his group of friends.

“Is everyone alright?” asked Iris.

“Oh yeah, I’m fine. Just a little dazed, but I’m good,” replied Blithe.

“Yes. I’m just fine,” said Rain.

They then continued on their stroll through the forest. Lloyd noted that Iris wasn’t speaking, and that she had a peculiar look on her face.

“Iris? Are you alright? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

”…How many times do I have to tell you two to think before you act? Not only did you hurt yourselves, but you put us all in danger!”

“…Well. What can I say, other than sorry? I mean,we were honestly trying to help those kids back there…”

The group remained quiet for a few more minutes. Finally, it had seemed that Blithe had had enough of the silence.

“So, anyway, speaking about ghosts, have you guys heard about the one that supposedly haunts that old laboratory up on Mason Hill? It’s only a mile from here,” she said.

“That’s only an urban legend. Besides, it’s probably just some Gastly trying to get attention,” replied Iris.

The three battered on, and Rain began to lose interest as their path paved itself around a lake. This lake had the clearest water Rain had ever seen. He could even see some medium sized fish pokemon, named Goldeen, colored with a mixture of pearl and orange and Magikarp, large, red fish with yellow fins and whiskers, swimming around. Many trainers had gathered at the edges in search of a water Pokemon partner. The group continued down for another half-mile…

“Guys. The road splits apart into two paths,” said Lloyd in a low voice.

Indeed it did. Rain pulled out his map of Pallet Park, and scanned for their location.

“It says here that the Electric Mill and the Desert Land are reached by going up the right path. The Fire Caverns and Crystal Falls are to the left,” explained Rain.

“Well… I’ll have a better chance at finding a Pikachu at the Electric Mill,” said Blithe.

”And I should go to the Desert Land if I want to find a ground type,” said Lloyd.

“Then I’ll go to the left for my fire pokemon… Rain, where are you going to go?” asked Iris.

Rain didn’t want to leave Iris alone, and besides, he wasn’t sure about what pokemon to search for anyway.

“I’ll take the left path,” replied Rain.

“Then… This is where we part,” announced Iris.

No one said a word. Blithe became teary-eyed and reached over to hug Iris. Iris accepted it, just as Lloyd did the same with Rain, though, it was Rain that frowned and became emotional, again.

“Hey guys don’t worry. I’m sure we’ll see each other really soon,” announced Lloyd. “Rain, my good friend, cheer up. I promise I’ll find you. I promise we’ll meet up again.”

Rain calmed down. “Ah… Okay Lloyd. I’ll sure miss you though… Eh. Be careful,” he said, smiling. “And don’t ram into anymore trees.”

Blithe reached over to embrace Rain.

“You’ve done so much for me, Rain. I couldn’t have graduated without your help,” she said.

“Oh, Blithe, I was happy to help,” replied Rain.

Blithe then reached to her neck, and took off a necklace. She then held it out, and motioned Rain to take it.

“I got you this necklace. It’s in the shape of a raindrop, and it’s made of two layers of stone; thunderstone, to remind you of me, and waterstone, to give it the look of rainwater.”

The necklace astonished Rain. It was his favorite color, teal. He took it, and put it on.

“Thank you. It’s great,” he said, with a grin. Blithe returned the same smile.

Lloyd was embarrassed. He wanted to give Rain something too, but wasn’t prepared. He then took off his emerald “L” necklace, and handed it to Rain.

“But Lloyd, it’s your favori-“

“Not a word. I expect it back, you know. Which pretty much means that you won’t have to worry about seeing me again!” he said, with a chuckle.

Rain put it on as well, and gave him an innocent and sincere smile.

Lloyd and Blithe turned around. Lloyd gave Iris a long bear hug, and released her before she ran out of breath. She smiled, and closed her eyes. She then raised her hand, and slapped both of them. Rain and the duo looked at her in shock.

“If I ever hear you guys get hurt doing something completely reckless, I’ll kill you,” declared Iris.

They all smiled, and headed down their two separate paths.

Nice work. :D

My one gripe is that there are a few instances where you jump from past to present tense when you describe characters. Also in:
“Ah, I don’t really know either. I was thinking of maybe a fire type. Or grass type,” said Iris.

“Some kind of grass type for me. Or maybe a ground type! Like a Trapinch,” said Lloyd.

“I want a Pikachu. I’ve always wanted one,” said Blithe.

“As if we didn’t already know,” said Iris, with a chuckle.
, try to break up the chain of "said"s. I'm sure you didn't mean to, since the rest of the fic looks fine, but this part read weird.

Can't wait for more! :)

Besides the tense flipping and a couple minor grammar issues (improper use of capital letters) this is really good! I liked the reference to Sara and Erik from the Safari Zone, in particular.

Keep up the good work!

Okay, so I wrote a fifteen page chapter, and I decided to split it into two, so I won't scare the readers away. ;3 So, here's the first part, Chapter 4. Enjoy.

Chapter 4: Rumor has It.
Why not try finding out for sure?

Rain and Iris took the left path, siding the crystal-clear lake, headed towards the Fire Caverns and Crystal Falls. Lloyd and Blithe headed through the right path, on their way to the Electric Mill and the Desert Land.

It was just about 10:00am, and the lake sparkled like a vibrant gemstone.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” Iris asked.

“Absolutely. It’s marvelous,” replied Rain. “I wonder why it shines so brightly.”

“Josephine Lake… It’s very clean… And when the sun hits it just right, it will sparkle like a diamond.”

“It’s a nice habitat for Pokemon.”

“Yeah.”

The two became quiet. Neither one spoke for a few minutes, and suddenly Iris broke the silence.

“Rain. Why did you decide to come with me?” she asked.

“Well. Honestly, I just didn’t want to leave you… I didn’t want to leave you alone.”

“But you left Lloyd and Blithe.”

“Yes, but they were together. And besides… I feel more attached to you. You pay more attention to me, and you helped me calm down.”

“I see…” she said in a low voice.

Rain turned and smiled at his friend. And she smiled back, with her perfect smile, shining like Josephine Lake.

“I want to thank you, for not leaving me. And for trusting me.”

He again, smiled.

They continued down the dark dirt path. The forest trees slowly diminished as they strolled down the path, and they soon were out of site of the lake, though, now there was a river next to the path, and a series of small creeks, all headed toward the same destination, coming from seemingly the same place. And soon enough, the forest was a while behind, and it was now more of a meadow with occasional trees and bright wildflowers that painted the grass with other colors than just green. Many trainers could be seen, scouting the fields with their binoculars, or with their naked eyes, searching for a partner pokemon. Many had their borrowed pokemon to their side of them, which reminded Rain that he hadn’t seen Iris’s lent pokemon.

“Iris. I never got to see your borrowed pokemon. Would you mind showing me?”

“Oh! Sorry Rain! Yes, of course you can see him.”

“Haha, you don’t have to apologize. I haven’t shown you mine either.”

The two trainers pulled out their luxury balls, and enlarged them.

“Let’s go!” Iris tossed her pokeball into the air. The sphere opened, and a white light released a flying, purple figure. It had two claws, bat-like wings, and a tail with a stinger.

“Gligar!” it yelled, showing its fangs. And as it said, it was indeed a Gligar.

“I call on you, let’s go!” Rain tossed his pokeball into midair, and out popped his borrowed Teddiursa.

“Well then, they both look very happy and healthy,” said Iris.

They both then raised their pokeballs to return them to their rightful place, but suddenly an aurora of color and ice was shot at their feet from down the path.

“Ah?!” yelled Iris as the two stepped back.

“What was that!?” asked Rain.

A blonde haired figure approached them. His hair was spiked, and he had dark blue, arrogant eyes… He wore a red blazer on top of a white shirt, and dark pants with sneakers popping out at the bottom. He was just about the same height as Rain. It was none other than Avery, Gary Oak’s son.

“Relax kids. I’m not about to hurt you. You guys get upset over everything,” said Avery, laughing.

“What do you want now? We’re kind of busy, and we don’t need bratty idiots getting in our way,” exclaimed Iris. Iris had grown very bitter over Avery, as the years passed. And who wouldn’t, after being teased for simply trying to do well at school. Avery mainly teased her for studying too much and being “nerdy.” But that only started after she had rejected his request for a date.

“And for the record, you can’t call us kids. We’re older than you, remember?” added Rain.

“Sh...Shut up!” he yelled. “I want to battle you!”
“No.” they said, simultaneously.

“What are you? Cowards? Or are you just afraid of losing? I bet that “L” necklace stands for loser!” he said, pointing at the necklace Lloyd had let Rain borrow.

Rain and Iris chuckled at the fifteen year old’s immaturity.

“Avery, the answer is still no. For one, these are our borrowed Pokemon. And two, battling between trainers is strictly prohibited,” explained Iris.

“Whatever. I have better things to do. I’ll find you later, and we’ll settle this,” said Avery. “See you later, losers.”

He walked away in the opposite direction with his borrowed pokemon at his side. It was a small, cream-colored creature. It was shaped like a pointed cap, and had small, black legs. It was a Snorunt.

Rain and Iris recalled their Teddiursa and Gligar, and continued down the path.

“I wonder why he’s so bitter. Why does he hate me?” asked Rain.

“Does it matter?”

“Well, yes to me, a little. I’ve done nothing to him, and even from the first day I met him, he was a total ass to me.”

“Ah, some people just like being bullies. He does it to anyone he dislikes.”

“Yeah, but like I said, I hadn’t done anything. There he had no reason to dislike me; you, maybe, I mean, no offense, but you did reject him.”

“I see your point,” she said, with a hint of distress. She then thought for a moment. “Rain, do you know about Professor Samuel Oak?”

“Of course. He’s Gary Oak’s grandfather. He’s also the founder of our academy.”

“Yes, but is that all you know about him?”

“Well, I know that he passed away…”

“Ah, yes. Do you know why or how?”

“No, not…not really…”

“Well. They say he died in an accident, while working on a secret experiment. Now, I don’t know all the details, but I do know that there is a conspiracy theory that he was actually murdered; though, there is not enough evidence to prove that.”

Rain stopped in his tracks.

“Really?” his voice was solemn.

“Yes. But I was about eight years old, at the time.”

“Avery could have been close to his great grandfather, like his father was. He probably lost his trust in others…” Rain suddenly pitied his bully.

“Let’s go. We don’t have to worry about Avery. And he does have friends, not the best ones in my book, but if he ever quits being an asshole and grows out of his immaturity, I’m willing to help him out.”

“Good, me too,” he said, smiling.

The duo walked for another five minutes. And then they heard a strange rumble.

“What was that?” Iris asked. “It sounded like a pokemon.”

“Ah… No, Iris. Actually, that was my stomach,” said Rain, in an embarrassed manner.

“Haha, do you want to take a break and eat lunch?”

“Yes!”

”Rain, why didn’t you say anything earlier?”

“Oh, because I didn’t want to waste time.”

She looked at her red poketch watch. “It’s half-past twelve,” she said dully. “Don’t worry about the time, we have till tomorrow morning, and we’re almost to the fire caverns anyway.”

“Ehe, alright.”

The two found a picnic table nearby at a resting point within the park. Many trainers gathered there to rest and each lunch, Just like Rain and Iris.

“Iris. Ah… What are we going to eat?”

“Did you not bring any food?”

“No, I guess I didn’t think about it.”

She rolled her eyes. She then pulled out a brown paper bag that had been labeled as “Lunch.” She took a sandwich out. It was neatly cut diagonally, from corner to coner.

“Take half. And don’t say no. I insist. I don’t eat much anyway.”

“Alright.” He took the sandwich gleefully, and took a small bit out of the middle, not even asking what was in it. But instantly, he tasted juicy turkey, fresh lettuce and tomato, cheddar cheese, and something else he could not identify… And it was rather spicy.

Iris chuckled at his reaction to tasting the secret ingredient.

“It’s crushed tamato berry.”

He swallowed quickly, and he suddenly needed that cold lemonade his mom offered him the night before.

“Damn, what the heck! It’s spicy as hell!”

“Ahaha, take one of the water bottles from my bag.”

And he did so. As soon as his mouth stopped flaring, he actually realized that the sandwich was excellent. The two quickly finished up. Rain took out Iris’s map.

“Alright, so we are right… here, at the rest point. The fire caverns are about a little more than half a mile that way…” He pointed towards the north, at a trail going into another forest. The river still ran alongside the trail.

“Alright, let’s get going.”

They headed back to the road, away from the noisy rest point.

Rain began to notice that the environment was changing, as they got closer to the Fire Caverns. The trees became darker, they had less and less leaves, and some even looked dead and decaying. But they were all huge trees, towering as tall and reaching towards the sky. There were less and less flowering plants, and more shrubs and weeds.

And suddenly, it came to him. This place seemed so similar to the setting in his dream. He grew nervous, to the point were he was no longer talking to his friend. He needed some kind of solace.

After a few minutes of walking in silence, the road, again, came to a split.
To the left, continued the same, silent dark forest. But to the right, he could hear the cries of happy pokemon, and the rush of water.

“Iris, I-“

“You want to take the right path, I know.”

“ But… Yeah. I, uh, do. But I don’t want to leave you alone.”

Iris shook her head and put her hand on his shoulder. “Don’t worry about me. I’ll be just fine. I know that places like these make you uncomfortable. It’s alright. You should enjoy the park. And besides. I have a feeling you’ll find the perfect pokemon if you take the right path.”

Iris pulled out her luxury ball. “Gligar, will protect me.” The Gligar popped out as she tossed the pokeball into the air.

Rain frowned. He really didn’t want to leave his friend. Not because he was worried about her, but because he would simply miss her.

“I’ll miss you. I really will.”

“Me too.” She embraced Rain with a warm hug. “But don’t worry. Like Lloyd, I promise to find you. As soon as I can.”

He didn’t want to cry anymore. Not in front of his friends. He was embarrassed about all the sniffling he’d done in the past few days. He stayed strong for his friend. That way, she wouldn’t worry about him.

She then reached into her pocket. “Rain, please take this, I made it myself.”

It was a teal bracelet. It was made of five different segments. The middle one, resembled the iris of someone’s eye, though, it was made of a teal gemstone.

“I don’t know what to say. I mean, I really like it; it’s perfect. But I don’t have anything for you.”

“It’s alright.” She smiled sincerely.

“I’ll, uh. Make it up to you… and to Lloyd and Blithe. I promise.” He said, returning the smile. And she could tell that he was not lying.

“Okay. I won’t say good bye.”

“Right. Rather, let’s say…”

“See you later!” They said simultaneously, gave each other one more hug and ran in opposite paths, without looking back.

And this would have been the second part of chapter 4, but I split it appart into a different chapter.

Chapter 5: Fury
Caution yourself.

Rain ran through the forest. He could see the trees regaining their browns and green leaves. He could see that the flowers began to bloom once again, and the forest was carpeted with lush, green grass. It was not a thick forest, in fact, you could see the sun’s rays shining through and giving further radiance to the roses and tulips of the environment.

He finally slowed down, and took a breath of the clean air. To the left, was a clear river, resembling a rushing liquid crystal. To the right, was a light forest. And it was pleasant. The only sounds he could hear were the occasional soft cries of young Pokemon, or a nearby trainer on the hunt for one.

‘I think I should start looking for a pokemon now,” he thought to himself.

“Teddiursa, help me out!” he called out as he tossed the pokeball from his grasp. The pokemon popped out and appeared, just the same way he had seen him last time; with his hand to his mouth.

Rain wondered if it was true that a Teddiursa’s palms were always soaked in honey… Just then, he noticed a small purple Pokemon peaking at him from under a bush. It was a male Nidoran. It had a sharp horn on the top of his small head, he had two buck teeth sticking out of his mouth. The purple figure had large ears with an inner green tint. His body was small, and was spotted with even darker patches of purple.

Rain suddenly got excited – Too excited. He yelled at the Teddiursa to ambush the Nidoran with a slash of his claws, but before the brown bear could move, the Nidoran cried out loudly and ran into the forest.

“Oh… I guess… I scared him off,” he said to Teddiursa, who just looked back at him with a sheepish smile.

“Ah… Let’s keep going.” He started to head back up the trail, with Teddiursa leading the way, but then noticed something. During the last 6 hours, he’d only seen a handful of Pokemon within the park. And more than half of those were Pokemon that belonged to or were lent to other trainers.

“Yeah, this isn’t going to work. I figure most Pokemon steer clear of the path, since most of trainers would rather pass through the trail than head directly into the forest. And because most of the Pokemon in Pallet Park are very young and rarely ever see people, they are probably scared of us. Teddiursa, let’s head into the forest. I’m sure I’ll have better luck in there, anyway.”

Teddiursa said nothing, but instead began to slash at some shrubs, to make the walk into the forest easier for Rain.

“Ah, Teddiursa, thanks for that, I appriciate it. But I’d rather have you save your energy for a pokemon battle. I can manage, and the terrain isn’t that extreme, anyway.”
The pokemon seemed to agree and replied with a simple “Teddiursa,” and walked in between two maple trees, over the bushes he had just cut. He lead the way for Rain without being asked.

And before long, Rain noticed that he was right. He could easily see many creatures in the trees above him. There were mostly those worm-like Pokemon, Caterpie and Weedle, and the occasional Metapod and Kakuna, their pupa-like evolved forms. Metapod was a pod-like cocoon Pokemon that looked like an object mummified with green leaves. It had two large eyes and a point resembling a large nose on the middle of it’s body. Kakuna, however, is yellow and has a more ridged and bizarre appearance. It also had a head digit with two black eyes. Metapod simply sat on the branches, while Kakuna would hang from them on a single thread.

Rain only observed them for a moment, but decided that a bug-type Pokemon was not for him, at least for now. Rain motioned for Teddiursa to continue walking, though, the small bear looked ready for a battle with his arms in front of his body instead of at his face.

Rain continued to walk, and saw mostly the same bug pokemon, and some flying type pokemon, Pidgey, Tailow and Starly, all roosting in different trees, preferring to sit with their own species, rather than interact with another. Pidgey is labeled the “Tiny bird” Pokemon, and that is just what they look like, small birds. They have brown feathers on the top of their bodies and wings, and beige colored ones on their bellies and the tips of their wings. They have orange-red beaks and thick, beige eyebrows. Tailow is the “Tinyswallow” pokemon. They are royal blue, with white under their bellies and wings. They also have long, blue tails, yellow beaks, and red faces. Rain felt that Starly were the least colorful of the three birds, but felt they still had a cute charm. They had chocolate bodies with white faces, a white patch on their bellies, and three tail feathers, the middle one, also a pure white.

He kept walking, though, feeling he could not connect with these certain pokemon on a high enough level. Although he saw plenty more Nidoran, most were cowardly and ran as soon as they were approached.

And then, Rain saw someone standing in the middle of the forest. He was staring up at the sky, and looked like he was fixated on something, not even noticing Rain a few feet beside him. He is tall, taller than even Iris, and slim, with short, dark hair and sharp, but calm eyes. Rain noticed that they are a blue-green mixture of color. He wore a black t-shirt that had a bluish tint, and dark teal pants, torn at the ends of his legs. He was sporting old, red wristbands, just like Rain’s. Leaning on his leg, was a Farfetch’d sitting down, seemingly resting. It was another species of bird Pokemon. It was a brown duck, with an orange beak and a yellow-white underbelly. Rain had learned about this Pokemon in class. It would always carry a green stalk, and would guard it with its life. Rain assumed that it was the Pokemon he was lent.

Not wanting to alert the trainer, he tried to quietly walk past him. But the Farfetch’d opened his eyes and began to squawk at Rain and Teddiursa, probably thinking he’d get attacked.

The trainer turned around calmly, and looked at Rain with his unique eyes.

Rain felt embarrassed. “Ah… I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to disturb you or your Farfetch’d. I was just passing by and-“

“It’s alright. He’s a bit paranoid, anyway,” replied the trainer. He recalled the pokemon.

“What were you gazing at anyway?”

“Oh. The moon.”

It was not yet, dark, but indeed, the white, celestial sphere was in the sky. Rain, also, without noticing, began to stare at it as well.

“The moon is…”

“Mystifying,” said the trainer.

“Exactly. But, you know what? Most people don’t take the time to notice that.”

“It’s a shame.”

“Yes,” said Rain, softly.

Quite a while had passed, and Rain hadn’t noticed it. The Teddiursa had even leaned over on Rain’s leg for a nap. He did, however, realize that he was completely calm and felt pleasant, a sensation that he hadn’t experienced in a long time, even though he was standing next to a complete stranger.

“Ah, listen. I’ve got to go. I haven’t found my Pokemon partner, and I don’t even have a clue with what I want,” said Rain.

“Oh. Same with me.”

“Okay. See you later then.”

“Alright.”

Rain then began to walk, forgetting that he had a sleeping bear on his leg. The Teddiursa toppled over and woke up. He looked at Rain with an angry glare, but soon calmed down after Rain apologized. The trainer laughed.

Rain continued to walk, but then remembered that he had forgotten to ask the trainer for his name.

“Hey, uh, wait a second. I forgot to ask-“ Rain stopped his voice when he noticed that he had disappeared.

“Oh… never… mind.” He frowned.

He turned back around and followed Teddiursa further into the forest. After searching for about an hour, he grew discouraged. That perfect Pokemon he’d been longing for was nowhere to be seen. Rain continued to walk, and he then stopped at a point were there was a small cliff to his right, and a waterfall to his far left. The cliff had an eight-foot drop, and had several rose bushes lined at the bottom.

”Oh, damn. Let’s be careful not to fall down that cliff,” he said to Teddiursa.

But the waterfall was beautiful. It cascaded off another cliff, and flowed down the river that Rain had been following since he first saw Josephine Lake.

“Teddiursa. Maybe we should leave this place. As beautiful and pleasant as it is, I’m not having much luck here.”

Teddiursa looked up, and pointed at Rain’s pant’s pocket.

“Ah… What is it?” Rain reached inside, and found the note that Teddiursa had given him when he first called him out.

“The note that has a list of you moves… What about it?” He opened it up, and re-read it.”

And then, it dawned to him.

“You have the sweet scent technique! That’s perfect! It will attract Pokemon with a sweet-smelling aroma. Please, use it.”

Teddiursa smiled proudly, He then held his hands out and a pink, gaseous substance flowed out, and into the surrounding air. The smell was strong, and even Rain liked it. And after only a minute or two, a nearby bush began to shake and rumble…

Rain gasped. “Teddiursa! It worked!”

And then, out jumped a Phanpy. Phanpy is a small, elephant-like Pokemon with a long nose. It is a light blue color, with red markings. It seem curious to what the scent was, and approached Teddiursa. The Phanpy began to sniff around and examine him, but looked as though he became angry.

“Phan-Phanpy-Phan!” it shrieked.

“Ah!? Teddiursa, what is wrong with him?”

Teddiursa began to speak with the Phanpy, and after a few seconds, it became even more furious. It backed up, and looked ready to charge at Rain.

Rain had no idea what the Phanpy wanted. Teddiursa frantically pointed some berries in one tree, and applies in other.

“Uh? He wants food?”

Teddiursa nodded, but was then met with a harsh ram to the side from the Phanpy. The small bear was thrown to the side of a cliff, and cried out in pain.

“Teddiursa! No!” Rain ran over to help the small Pokemon, but was also met with a headbutt from the Phanpy. Rain flew into the same wall.

“Agh!” He coughed violently. Rain saw Teddiursa rise from the ground and rushed over to Phanpy in a fury of scratches and fists. Phanpy took a few of the blows, but then curled into a ball. When Teddiursa tried to use a slash attack, the small elephant violently rolled into him, throwing him back into a nearby bush.

The Phanpy threw a battle cry and then began its ambush on Rain using the same rollout technique it used on Teddiursa. Rain jumped up and dodged the attacking Pokemon, who rammed itself into a wall. Rain ran to the edge of the cliff. Phanpy did not seem to be hurt, not even after crashing into the dirt wall. It again, aimed itself at Rain, and began to roll into him. Rain tried, again, to dodge it, but had barely any room to move, and thus, his leg was met with the harsh blow.

“Agh!” he screamed in pain. Teddiursa was collapsed near a tree, and Rain was trapped. In front of him was an angry Pokemon, and behind him was a cliff that fell into a mass of thorny bushes.

The Pokemon shot out a war cry. Rain’s mind was racing. The Phanpy, again tried its rollout on the human in front of him, who then tried to dodge the attack, and succeeded, but lost his balance, beginning to fall backwards off the cliff.

And then, someone grabbed his arm.

“Farfetch’d! Hold me back, don’t let us fall!” he yelled.

The Farfetch’d clawed onto the person’s shoulders and kept him balanced. He then pulled the frightened Rain back to safety.

“Hey, are you alright?” It was the trainer he had met, that was staring at the moon, earlier.

“…Uh. Yes.”

The Phanpy was on the roll again, rushing towards the two trainers.

“Farfetch’d! Fury attack!

The duck flew over to the Phanpy and took hold of the stalk with both wings, and put it in a horizontal fashion. Phanpy collided with the stick, and bounced back from the rigidity of the Farfetch’d and his stick. The duck then furiously bashed the small elephant with the stick, until it reached the edge of the cliff. Farfetch’d then slashed at it. Phanpy fell back and off the cliff.

“Are you sure you’re okay? I heard you cry out pretty loudly,” said the trainer with the unique eyes, leaning down.

Rain checked his leg. It was red and would surely bruise, but other than that, he was fine.

“I’m fine. But Teddiursa…” Rain pulled himself up and ran over to the small bear. It was awake, but had several scratches and bruises.

Rain’s eyes began to well up. “Teddiursa, I’m so sorry. It’s my entire fault! I didn’t know what to do!”

The bear smiled and said its own name, in a calm, but reassuring manner.

The other trainer walked over, searching his backpack. “Use this potion, and have him eat these oran berries. He should be just fine. I don’t think he’ll need to see a doctor.”

Rain received the items from him, and gave them to Teddiursa. “Thank you, uh… I meant to ask for your name.”

“It’s Silver,” he replied.

”Silver?”

“Yeah. I know it’s different but-“

“No, It’s alright. I like it. Mine isn’t common either. It’s Rain.”

“I see. Alright Rain.” He held out his hand. Rain accepted it, and they both smiled.

“Geeze, you really saved me back there. I don’t know how I can thank you.”

“It’s alright. I heard someone yell, and I came to help.”

“I’ll repay you, some how. But for now, I’ll say thank you.”

“It’s not a problem. Anyway. I’ve got to get out of here.”

“Oh. I see. So you already caught your Pokemon?”

“Yeah. Just a while ago. Have you?”

“No, not yet. I had Teddiursa use sweet scent, and it attracted that violent Phanpy.”

“Oh, I see.”

“Yes. So, uh, Silver. I guess I’ll see you around. Hopefully.”

“Right. Take care, and good luck.”

Silver turned around, and headed for the road.

“I promise to pay you back!” yelled Rain. Silver simply waved back at him, without looking back, the Farfetch’d flying behind him.

Rain now needed to allow Teddiursa to recover. He too, needed to recover. So he laid out his sleeping bag under a tree, and put the small bear on it.

“I’m so sorry Teddiursa. I never meant for that to happen.” The Pokemon looked up at him, and with his large eyes, he gave Rain a look that seemed to express, ‘It’s okay. It’s not your fault.’

They rested for about a while, and before long, it was about 5:00pm. Teddiursa had slept soundly, and was now wide-awake, feeling one hundred percent.

“Okay, let’s go now, shall we?”

“Teddiursa,” the bear replied, happily.

The two turned around, and they began to walk toward the path, next to the waterfall. Rain saw a figure at the top of the cliff, drinking water. Rain became curious, and decided he needed a better look at the Pokemon. He looked around, and saw a rope ladder coming down from the top of the cliff. He recalled Teddiursa, so that he wouldn’t have to climb, and began to carefully climb up. The wall was smooth, which made it harder to stick to, but he did, eventually, make it up.

‘And that, is exactly why I hated physical education.’

Rain scanned the field, and found the figure was still drinking water, calmly. Rain approached it, but did not want to startle it. So rather than sneak up on it, he softly called out to it… The Pokemon was small. It was brown, and had perky ears. It had a fluffy, coffee tail, and an array of fluffy running from its neck, down to half its body.

“Hello there…”

The Pokemon’s ears suddenly tensed up. It turned around. Rain could now identify that it was an Eevee.

“I would, uh, like some water. Please don’t mind me. Continue drinking.” Rain pulled out his empty canteen, and walked to the water, trying not to upset the small Pokemon. He leaned over, and let the cold water run into the canteen, as it ran towards the waterfall. The Eevee only stared back, but in curiosity.

“You’re an Eevee. I really like Eevee.” Rain smiled at her, trying to make her comfortable around him. “Listen, uh. I’d really like to challenge you to a battle, if that’s okay.”

The Pokemon gazed at him and his Pokeballs, and seemed to understand what he was asking.

“Eevee,” It cried out, in agreement, smiling.

“Teddiursa! It’s time!” he tossed the pokeball into the air, and the bear stood out in the light, ready for battle.

“I’ll let you have the honor of starting the battle,” said Rain to the Eevee.

Eevee understood, and fixated itself on the foe in front of her. She rushed towards the small bear, and made an abrupt stop, creating a large cloud of sand to hide her.

“Teddiursa! Watch out, that’s a sand attack!”

But it was too late, and Eevee tackled him into the ground.

“Teddiursa! Fake tears!”

The bear began to cry, tricking Eevee into giving him pity, and taking her off guard. She approached him, and Teddiursa jumped forth quickly, and attacked with a barrage of swipes, all hitting Eevee directly, the last one sending her flying back.

She got back up, and had a fire in her eyes. She was upset about being tricked, and attacked quickly, virtually unseen. She then flew into a fury of claws herself, and pushed the bear back, close to the river.

“Oh, no! Teddiursa! Faint Attack!” The bear then summoned dark energy, and quickly disappeared, and the reappeared next to the Eevee, jabbing her in the side.

“Now! Cut!” Teddiursa rushed forth, held out his claws, and swung at the fox-like Pokemon in front of him. It hit, and she was pushed back into the ground.”

“Great! Okay! This is my moment…” Rain reached into his pocket, and pulled out a pokeball. He pressed the button in the center of it, and threw it at Eevee…

The pokeball opened above Eevee, detecting she was a wild pokemon, released white stars, and converted the Pokemon into a red energy.

The Pokemon rolled on the ground… once… twice… a third time… and the button in the center regained its white color, the pokeball stopped moving, and Eevee, was caught.

“I… did it? We did?!”

“Teddiursa,” said the bear, in a proud manner.

“We did it! I’ve caught my first Pokemon!” cried out Rain, running towards the small bear, hugging it tightly, tears rolling down his eyes.

Hmm, not bad, though a couple of problems. First, you mispelled Taillow (minor)

However, I'm a little concerned over the choice of Eevee as his first Pokémon. Many cookie cutter trainer fics start with Eevee, so I'm hoping you'll deviate from that path.

Somehow, I expected someone to say that.

But I know what you mean.
But Eevee is on of my favorite pokemon, and Rain is basically based around me.
But I can tell you now that it won't be as bland and generic as other stories.

Shoulda edited to add the second but, but eh.

To be brutally honest, I'm a little more worried now that you told me Rain is based on you. I know you mean well, but I've seen far too many well-meant fics turn into generic cookie cutter self-insert stories in the past...

It's pretty good so far! I kinda want to smack Rain around and tell him to stop freaking crying though XD;;;

Oh, totally.
What a crybaby, huh?

;D

Thanks for the comment.

Don't worry.
I meant that at this moment, he is based on me, because in a way I am experincing the same things he is. He is not me, this is not a self-insert fic, and besides. I'm trying to make my characters lifelike with human personalities. And people do change over time, no? :]

Very true. I'll be looking forward to reading more!

It seems like this has taken a long time to write. I mean, only a small amount of time has passed within the story. But, anyway. I enjoy this a lot.

Read, and review.

Chapter 6: I'll Return

I promise.

Rain let Teddiursa out of the bear hug he was giving him. He then cautiously approached the pokeball containing his newly captured Eevee, as though it were a wild animal. He picked it up, and looked at it in glory.

‘My first Pokemon… How, exciting!” he thought.

Teddiursa walked up to him and tugged at his pants. Rain looked down and saw that the bear was pointing towards the western sky. It was about 5:30, and the sun set a colorful cast on the sky, as it began to set.

“Do you want to stay for a bit and watch the sunset?” asked Rain.

Teddiursa nodded.

“I like sunsets too,” he added.

The two sat down on the ledge of the cliff, next to the cascading Waterfall.

‘I guess I hadn’t noticed it, but this must be Crystal Falls.’ He noted that it indeed shined like a mass of crystals, reflecting the colors of the color palette in the sky. Teddiursa, again, tugged at his pants, and pointed at the pokeball he was holding.

“Oh, right. I should let Eevee out, so that she can meet us.” He tossed the pokeball into the air, directly above him. The chocolate colored, fox-like Pokemon appeared in Rain’s lap. At first, she looked surprised, frightened even. She fumbled around in his lap, and then noticed the cliff, directly in front of her. She then, ducked in fear of falling.

“Hehe, it’s alright Eevee. I won’t let you fall,” he cooed. “My name is Rain,” he began to pet her and caress her head, to calm her down. And she quickly did. She turned around, and looked directly into his emerald eyes, reflecting the sky. And her own eyes, seemed to say ‘thank you,’ to Rain. And she smiled and licked his cheek.

“Hehe, that tickles,” He said, giggling.

Teddiursa watched Rain and Eevee, enjoying each other and bonding. He suddenly grew sad and jealous… He began to cry, though, he didn’t let Rain see it. The bear turned his head, and only let a single tear fall. Teddiursa then remembered that he would only be with Rain, temporarily, until tomorrow morning at the most. But that didn’t mean he wouldn’t develop a bond with him…

“Teddiursa. Would you like to meet Eevee?” asked Rain.

Teddiursa quickly wiped his face, and put on a fake smile. He turned around, and looked at the Eevee. She was small, and as soon as he held his arm out to allow her to hold his hand, she ducked into the solace of Rain’s legs.

“She’s kind of shy,” said Rain. “Hey, Eevee, give him a chance. He’s kind of quiet, but has quite a bit of character.”

Eevee peeped back out, and reached to Teddiursa’s palm. She then smiled sincerely, and said her name, seemingly saying something to the bear Pokemon in front of her. He also replied, saying his own species name, and gave her a smile, a real one.

“Guys, listen. It’s getting late, and I’d like to get back to my family as soon as possible.”

”Eevee,” said the brown fox, in an excited voice, however, Teddiursa didn’t say a thing, still feeling hurt, betrayed even.

“You’re both probably tired, so I’ll carry you around in your pokeballs,” he said. “Return.” He beamed them back into their respective pokeballs. He then jumped off the small cliff, picked up speed, and sped away to the dirt path he had followed here…

***

It was about 8:00pm. Rain had decided to take a “short cut” through the forest, to return to the entrance faster, but only winded up getting lost. He had now barely returned to the fork where he and Iris went their separate ways.

‘Damn. It’s gotten dark. I didn’t expect to be here this late.’

He continued to walk down the path, walking at a faster pace, even though he was very tired. Last night, he could barely sleep at all, and now, all he wanted was to get home, and fall asleep. Just for a few hours.

After about five minutes, he passed by the rest point where he and Iris had eaten lunch earlier today. He found that a few trainers had camped out her for the night. Rain considered doing the same, but decided against it. He would much rather sleep in his bed than on the floor, at least for one more night.

Rain continued to walk, and the night gradually became colder and darker. The wind whistled through the foliage, rustling the nearby trees and commanding a chorus of ambiences.

‘I need a sweater.’

He began to feel like he was being followed. Rain heard abnormal movement beside him, every few minutes or so. At one point, he even called out to see if it was another trainer, but no one (or nothing) replied…

A gust picked up, and Rain felt debris swell around his body. Pollen flew up his nose, causing him to sneeze two or three times. Suddenly, he heard someone else sneeze as well.

Rain was now sure of it, he knew that there was someone there, watching him and following him. He dug into his backpack and found a small flashlight. He shined it over at a body of trees, and found a head, with blonde, spiky hair.

“Okay, I see you now! Who are you, and why are you following me!?” cried Rain.

“Hehehe, geeze Rain. You sure are paranoid. It’s only me.” The figure walked out of from the guard of the forest. It was Avery.

“Avery, what are you doing? What do you want?”

“Come here. I want a battle.”

“Avery. No. Not here, not now,” he said, walking towards him.

“Why not? You scared of losing? Haha, you’re more of a loser than ever,” He mocked. Avery practically pushed him into the forest.

Rain began getting angry. “I’ve told you before, it’s against the rules. I’m tired and I want to get home.

“Hehehe, you’re a freakin’ failure, you know that? Just like those loser friends of yours.”

Rain hated when people put down his friends, but he could see right through the persistent teenager in front of him. He knew Avery was only trying to anger him into battle.

“I don’t have time for this, leave me alone,” he said, trying to keep his cool. He began to walk back to the dirt path.

“No! Wait! Come on! No one will find out!” he cried, getting in front of Rain.

“Avery, did you not hear me?! Step off! I will not battle you here! Leave me alone!” he yelled, forcing his way past Avery.

Avery’s temper rose. He pulled out his pokeball, and tossed it in the air, and a Pokemon Rain did not care to see, could be heard popping out and landing on the forest ground. “No one rejects me and gets away with it,” he said, with a dark tone. He expected Rain to turn around and face him, but he kept walking.

“Heheheh! Use sleep powder!” commanded Avery.

Rain froze in his steps. ‘He couldn’t be serious, could he?’ he wondered. Rain turned to see that a cloud of green spores was surrounding his body. His eyes and mouth opened wide in shock to see that Avery was in fact, not kidding around.

“Avery! What are you doing?!” he screamed, unwillingly breathing in the spores.

“Heheh! If you’re so tired, why don’t you just sleep here on the ground, where you belong?”

Rain coughed, falling to his knees with a violent fatigue overcoming his body.

“Hahah, I win, you stupid failure,” said Avery, coldly. Those were the last words he heard, before he fell into a forced sleep…

***

Rain awoke, more than seven hours later, from the same nightmare he had had the night before, with the same fire surrounding him, and the same dark figure mocking him and telling him to quit his journey. He had a headache, and was feeling drowsy.

For a while, he gazed into the sky, at the stars, searching for the moon. He then realized where he was, and remembered what had happened.

“Avery!” he yelled out in anger. “How could he?!”

Rain pulled himself up, feeling sore, and shuffled through his backpack, as he walked to the dirt trail, trying to find his pokedex. He found it, and looked at its clock, finding out that it was nearly 5:00am.

“What?! The park closes in two hours!” Rain had been told the week before his final that any trainers that did not return to the entrance of the park would have their trainer licenses confiscated, and forced to return to the academy for one month for a remedial review class.

‘Damn him, how could he do this?’ he thought to himself, as he pulled himself up and ran down the dirt trail.

And then, he noticed something else. As he ran, he could no longer feel the jangling of the necklaces his friends had given him. He checked to see why, and found in horror that they were missing. He also checked his wrist, and found that the teal bracelet Iris had given him was gone as well.

‘And he’s a thief too. What am I supposed to do now?’ Not only could he possibly fail his final, but the gifts he had been given so graciously had been stolen as well. How was he supposed to explain all this to everyone? Especially when Avery has fooled most of the school, including the staff, into believing he was an angel? Surely no one would believe him without any proof.

Rain also frantically searched for his pokeballs, hoping that Avery did not steal his Eevee and borrowed Teddiursa either. Fortunately, he didn’t take them.

Rain ran has fast as he could, clutching his pokedex in his hands, checking the time every so often. He ran past the painted meadows, into the forest, and right by Josephine Lake, taking short breaks to catch his breath, before starting up again.

The body of water was very clear, but was not shining brightly, like it had the day before. Rain had no time to stop and appreciate the lake like he had wanted to, and ran past it, stopping at the fork were he had split up with Lloyd and Blithe. He took a few deep breaths, while checking the time, only to find that it was a little past 6:00am. He only had about an hour left before the park closed, but fortunately, the exit wasn’t far from were he stood.

Before he started back up the trail, he thought he had heard someone scream nearby. He walked cautiously, looking around to see if he could find were it had come from, but apparently, no one was around. He picked up his pace, and ran up the hill, passing the tree where his friends had helped the young trainers find bug Pokemon.

Suddenly, he heard a painful scream, which scared him so much, he tumbled over a rock and fell on his face.

“Help!” a loud feminine voice yelled. “Please, someone!” The voice came from within the forest.

Though he needed to leave, he couldn’t leave someone behind to get hurt. Rain forced his way past some shrubs, and behind a few trees, and found a short, bruised and wounded, brown haired girl, with amber eyes, about Rain’s age. She was corned in front of a cliff, and some thorny bushes. She was clutching a beaten-up, fainted, sheep Pokemon. It resembled a yellow cloud, and had a tail with a yellow orb at the end of it. It had a blue head and blue paws. It was a Mareep.

“Please, help me! This Pokemon went ballistic and started attacking my Pokemon and I,” she plead.

Rain looked down, and to his horror, it was the Phanpy that had attacked him the day before.

The small elephant began to back up to roll out into the helpless trainer in front of him.

“No! Teddiursa! Help!” Rain quickly tossed the pokeball into the air, and the bear Pokemon appeared from a ray of light. He began to run up to the attacking Pokemon, but stopped cold in his tracks, unsure of what to do, not wanting to relive the pain he had felt the day before, and looked at Rain’s nervous eyes, with his own fearful eyes.

“Teddiursa, you’re going to have to trust me. We don’t have a choice!”
The Pokemon quickly regained self-control and turned around.

“Teddi!” he yelled.

The Phanpy began its rollout attack, heading rapidly toward the weakened trainer. She screamed in fear.

“Faint attack!”

Teddiursa gathered dark energy, and quickly charged toward the elephant. He clawed into the Pokemon’s side, and threw it off course, making it crash into a tree. The Phanpy pulled itself up, and focused on Teddiursa.

Phanpy jumped into action, with a barrage of swipes and attempted tackles, but Rain directed Teddiursa to counter them with his own attacks. Teddiursa clawed at each paw that was thrown at him, finally managing to swing in a brutal cut attack. The Phanpy was thrown back, into the same tree, and once again, got back up in a fit of anger. But this time…

It began to glow brightly, changing form and growing larger. It stopped glowing, and it looked to have become larger, grown two short tusks, and a shield-like surface on the top of its body. The Pokemon was no longer blue, but gray. Phanpy had evolved into a Donphan.

Rain was shocked, very scared, and wasn’t prepared for this. But he had no choice, except to continue fighting.

The Donphan screeched an ominous war cry, and ran forward to attack Teddiursa. Rain quickly noticed that the large Pokemon was not very agile, and tried to use that as a weakness.

“Teddiursa, jump!” he yelled, as the armored Pokemon got in close for an attack. The bear jumped, and landed on top of the Pokemon.

“Fury swipes!” Teddiursa swung at Donphan’s head with his small claws, but could not inflict much damage, since its armor was protecting it. Because Teddiursa’s attacks would not do much damage, Rain would need to think of another plan.

“Teddiursa, stand in front of that tree, and jump when I tell you to!” He jumped off Donphan’s back, and ran towards the tree Rain had pointed at. He then focused himself on Donphan, who was turning to bash into Teddiursa.

As soon as Donphan was within a yard in front of Teddiursa, Rain commanded him to jump. He did it with perfect timing, and Donphan collided with the tree behind Teddiursa.

Rain knew that it would take more than that to defeat that Donphan, and sure enough, the armor Pokemon pulled itself up, aiming at Teddiursa, completely ignoring the small Natu that had fallen out of the tree he had just bashed… Natu is another small bird Pokemon. It is green and round, and has an orange beak and orange wings, and a red feather on top of its head. It had red tail feathers. Natu was dazed and confused, and was ignorant to what was going on around him.

Teddiursa did not wait for Rain’s command, and went ahead and stood in front of another tree. To Rain’s surprise, Donphan, again, tried to tackle the bear Pokemon, and once again, hit a tree. While the armor Pokemon was dazed, the girl clutching a fainted Mareep took a chance and ran over to Rain and stood next to him. She was frantic and sobbing, and wasn’t sure about what to do. Rain told her to stand behind him, and to try and calm down, though; he knew that he was having trouble doing exactly what he had told her.

Teddiursa once again, ran to another tree, as Donphan rose and turned around. Donphan rushed toward Teddiursa, but this time, instead of falling for the same trap, he stopped suddenly as the bear jumped, and used his nose to slap the bear as it came back down. Now in his grasp, he juggled Teddiursa, in the air, who could only yelp and cry out in pain.

“No! Teddiursa!” he cried, as he began to reach for his other pokeball, the one containing his Eevee. Teddiursa actually noticed what Rain was doing, and gathered enough strength to slash at the brutal Donphan below him.

Teddiursa regain some control, and fled away from the Donphan, who was now the one crying out in pain.

During the whole debacle, Rain had forgotten about the amber-eyed girl that was standing behind him.

“Listen, recall your Teddiursa! I have a plan!” she exclaimed.

“But-“

“No, trust me! Please!”

“Alright,” he said, as the Donphan got a hold of himself and began an earth wreaking rollout attack. Teddiursa could only stare in fear at the mass of weight rolling toward his body.

“Teddiursa, come back!” he cried, beaming the bear back into the pokeball.

“Okay, Natu! Confuse Ray!” she yelled, as the Donphan turned around. The sinister-looking ray went directly into the armor Pokemon’s eyes, which caused him to tumble around like a drunken man.

‘Where did she get a Natu? She must have captured it while I wasn’t watching.” Rain thought.

“Now, teleport us to safety!” commanded the girl.

Natu raised its wings into the air, and summoned psychic energy. A wave of pink light swallowed the group, and they disappeared before the Donphan could regain its momentum…

The Natu transported the group to the in front entrance of Pallet Park. As soon as they appeared, Natu fainted, after having used all of its strength to teleport them all as far as possible.

A sleepy proctor noticed the group of wounded trainers and Pokemon in front of him, and quickly asked them all to follow him into the academy to seek medical treatment for themselves and their Pokemon, not yet asking what had happened.

The girl recalled her Pokemon, and followed Rain and the proctor up some stairs, and into a door, east of the main entrance of the Pokemon Academy. Rain noted that it was the nurse’s office.

Rain and the amber-eyed girl were told to sit in two chairs, right by the door. The nurse took their Pokemon for medical treatment, while the proctor asked them for information.

“Listen, before you start to question us, we need you to get someone into the park to get a hold of a wild Donphan. The one that attacked us.”

“A Donphan? How could there be a Donphan in the park?”

“Does it matter?! Please, I don’t want it to hurt anyone else!”

“Alright, alright. Calm down,” he said, getting up and walking over to a telephone.

Rain was still trying to calm himself down. The girl turned around and faced him.

“I want to thank you for helping me. I really don’t know what could have happened to me, if you hadn’t come.”

Rain didn’t know what to say.

“ My name is Amber, by the way.”

‘No kidding?” Rain thought.

“Ah… I’m Rain.”

“Rain, I don’t know how to repay you for what you did for me. I… I was so scared.” She said, sobbing and breaking down.

He began to realize about what could have happened, and he needed some kind of solace, and fast or he’d break down, just like her. He pulled Amber in for a hug, and she cried into his shoulder, as sobbed as well.

The two calmed down quickly, and the nurse walked into the room.

“Ah, children. Everything is fine now. All four Pokemon will be okay, and the proctor is getting the Donphan taken care of. If you’d like, you may see the Pokemon.”

“Oh, alright, said Amber.”

They rose from their chairs, and walked to the back room. To the left, were Amber’s borrowed Mareep and her own Natu. Mareep was lying on a bed, sleeping, and Natu was standing on another, motionless.

Rain’s Pokemon were on the right side of the room. Eevee was drinking water from a bowl, and Teddiursa sat next to her, smiling as Rain walked into the room.

Rain figured it was time to go now.

“Teddiursa. I, uh. I want to thank you for all your help. You’re an amazing Pokemon, and I’m so glad I got to meet you.”

Teddiursa began to cry. Rain could tell they were real tears, and he too, began to cry. The small bear embraced him. Eevee only stood, watching.

”I’ll miss you. I want to take you with me on my journey. But I can’t. I want to thank you for helping me capture Eevee. You saved us from that Donphan.”

Teddiursa began to calm down.

“I’ll come visit you some time. I promise,” said Rain.

He gave Teddiursa one last hug, and returned him to his pokeball, but not before Eevee gave him a lick on his bear face.

“Let’s go Eevee. I’ve got to get home.”

“Eevee,” she replied.

He recalled her into the pokeball. He turned around, and saw Ms. Fujibayashi standing at the entrance of the room.

“Ms. Fujibayashi, what are you doing here so early?”

“Oh, I always get here early. I’ve still got to teach class, you know.”

“I see. Well, did you hear about what happened?”

“Yes, yes. That’s the whole reason I came down here. The nurse filled me in, and she’s told me that they’re getting the Donphan under control. They will be taking it in for some testing, to see why it reacted in such a violent manner.”

“Alright, I-“

“Rain, I saw you talking to Teddiursa. I’m sorry that you’re going to have to leave him. It’s hard to let them go, especially for you, someone that can connect with other people so easily.”

”I’ll come back to see him, some time.”

“I know; I heard you tell him.”

“You’re such a good person. I’m going to miss you. I’m sorry the other kids gave you such a hard time, here at school.”

“It’s… Okay. I’ll be fine. I’ll uh, miss you too. You’re such a great teacher.”

“Thank you. You should get going. I’ll talk to Amber. And, congratulations on passing your final,” she said, giving him a hug.

“Thanks, again. I’ll see you later.”

He turned around, and saw Amber looking at him. He waved and smiled at her, and she mouthed a ‘thank you’ at him. He handed Ms. Fujibayashi the pokeball with Teddiursa inside, and walked out of the academy towards his house...

His journey will finally begin.
