Alright, this has been a thread I've wanted to start for a while, but I was really scared off when the moratorium was issued in the Pokemon Anime category.
This thread is designed for those interested in/devoted to/or who are actually amateur voice actors. This thread is designed for discussing different aspects of it, or discussing specific voice actors and what you thought were their strongest performances. This doesn't have to be limited to Pokemon VAs, but I figure that will be the majority.
Now here's where it gets tricky. This is NOT a place to just throw out negative 'they suck' or 'omg I luv them 4ever!!!' comments. If you say something, back it up. I'm really interested in VAs (and especially the Pokemon ones past and present) and hope to carry on a civil discussion about a wonderful profession.
And don't flame other members for their opinion. We're all entitled to one, not just you.
I hope we're able to have a nice discussion without being complete fools. And sorry for being so lengthy in setting this up, I just know that people can get immature REAL fast on this topic and I want to avoid it.
And I will start.
I've really been interested in VAs ever since developing my first crush (which was James. Haha!). The first site I found was one devoted to VAs (which sadly doesn't exist anymore
) and it began my insane interest. I can't watch Pokemon without analyzing it all and trying to figure out who voiced EVERYBODY. Since I had limited internet access, I would watch every episode and log who I guessed was each character (nerd much?) then when I was at my grandparents or the library I would try to confirm each guess. By the end of Kanto I had an AMAZING track record.
Once I learned the inner workings of 4Kids, I watched almost every 4Kids show on WB religiously, so I could learn even more VAs (which came in handy when they would guest star on my beloved Pokemon). In 1999 and 2000 I could name an insane amount of VAs that worked with 4Kids and all their roles. It was probably scary.
Slowly, my attention turned to other cartoons I watched and I developed a similar obsession, it wasn't as fun to me as knowing 4Kids because I couldn't name short term characters really, but I still enjoyed it.
Once I started high school, I worked in speech myself and wanted desperately to do Humorous Interps and such to work out my own voices. After working with several people, I realized I really didn't have the required talent (I have a few REALLY solid voices, but I can't do variety other than 4 or 5) and I moved on to speaking. I was a great Foreign Extemporaneous speaker though, as very few of those incorporate voices and humor into a speech about Foriegn affairs
I've been in college for two years and have jumped full heartedly back into my VA craziness. I find myself once again watching shows just to see if I can pick out the VAs. *Was unsuspectingly sucked into Dinosaur King just because of VAs*
As far as who my favorites are, I'll always have a special place in my heart for Eric Stuart, for voicing a character that created a rabid fangirl of the profession. I love TONS of VAs (and the Pokemon ones go unspoken for) but my two absolute favorites as far as characters and talent are Rob Paulsen and Tress Macneille. Both (for me) are easily top acts and able of so many different voices that it blows my mind.
Your thoughts?
