You were talking about how government is corrupt. I gave two examples how a corrupt government was voted out of office by the voters because they stopped listening to the least common denominators and actually looked at what was happening. Voters aren't stupid enough to let corruption and mismanagement go on for very long (well twelve years is pretty long but still). Eventually it will occur to people that the government is not doing their job so they bring in people who will.

We don't have this kind of control over private business. Especially mega corporations like Wal*Mart or General Motors. Though at the least the Union negotiates with GM so the employees have some control of their destiny.

Okay, Wal*Mart. No one can tell Wal*Mart what to do. They're the biggest retain chain in the world and they can do whatever they want unless a town/state/nation government comes in but we're getting rid of them. I don't want my fire fighters and police officers answering to Wal*Mart because I can't do squat to Wal*Mart because I don't have a say in what they do.

...you *do* understand the principle of outsourcing, don't you? If the government is outsourcing fire and police services, then they are the ultimate employer here, and can tell the private business running the service to fuck off and replace them with someone else should they prove to be corrupt, or unacceptable in any other way.

I guess they could. It all comes down to the situation I guess. Whatever *Goes off to ponder*

Buy stock in the company and go to shareholder meetings. Likewise, lobby for the city council to block Wal-Mart from getting land.

Wal*Mart sucks and should be banned.

:ponders starting a new Wal*Mart centered thread:

This is true but only if the government itself isn't corruptible. Government officials can and will be bribed if it serves the purpose of the private enterprise getting the contract.

Agreed. As far as I can tell, the purpose of Wal*Mart is to sell cheap plastic crap.

You couldn't tell I was amazingly sarcastic?

On the 'should be banned' part, I assumed you were sarcastic. Why, are you one of their best customers, Mozz?

The only thing that I don't like about Wal-Mart is that it's packed with annoying poor people.

And that it's driving smaller specialty stores who have a wider selection of products of a certain kind out of business - Wal*Mart is contributing to the closing down of toy stores like KB Toys and Toys R Us. This makes more obscure toys harder to find, and since Wal*Mart's toy section is so small, it also means that toys generally stay in stock for a shorter ammount of time than any other store.

That's my only real beef with them.

The internet. If you can't find what you want there, then it doesn't exist.

Wal*Mart
Kills Unions
Destroys small town economies
Promtes Sweat Shops
Panders to the Great American Cheapskate

Whatever happened to the FAIR market where people actually gave a damn quality and morals?

Wal*Mart
Provides Employment
Utilizes Economies of Scale
Promotes from Within
Panders to Smart Consumers

Saying Wal*Mart isn't "fair"... I don't have a witty comeback...

So I'm an idiot for shopping at KMart and Meijer?
